A half order of spaghetti with tomato sauce ($8.50) and a meatball ($2) pleased the youngun’ in our group. For dessert, the Banana al Caramello con Gelato ($6.50), a special, was luscious—a blend of sweet caramelized banana slices with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce served over a light meringue crust. That’s my idea of heaven. Chocolate Fondant ($6), a perfect portion of warm chocolate mousse with chocolate sauce served with whipped cream, is a chocolate lover’s delight and not too heavy to boot. Tartufo ($5), chocolate and vanilla ice cream in a semi-sweet chocolate shell, pleased our little one but didn’t compare to the other two homemade desserts. A cappuccino ($4), espresso ($3) and coffee ($1.75) topped off our meal. The tab totaled $98.96 without tip. We learned later that our server both times was Vitiello’s nephew Michael. He was friendly, down to earth and obliging.
Lunch and dinner menu The menu isn’t huge at That Little Italian Restaurant. Appetizers range from $3.25 for the garlic bread, $4.95 for Pasta & Fagioli to $9.95 for Shrimp Cocktail or Mozzarella Caprese (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted peppers and basil). Besides those we sampled, Spinach and Portobello Salad with balsamic vinaigrette and gorgonzola ($9.95) figures on the menu. Any pasta—cheese ravioli, penne, linguine, angel hair, spaghetti or rigatoni—is available with tomato sauce at $12.95 with a house salad. Besides those we sampled, there is also a variety of other pastas such as Penne Caprese (penne, fresh mozzarella in pomodoro sauce with basil at $13.95), Eggplant Parmigiana and Tortellin Alfredo (both $14.95). Veal Portobello ($18.95), made with veal medallions, Portobello mushroom, sun-dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts in a brown sauce, Chicken Scarpariello ($16.95), made with chicken, hot sausage, pepperoncini, mushrooms, garlic and rosemary, and Lemon Sole ($18.95) are among the veal, chicken and seafood entrees on the menu. In addition, there are weekly specials which change every Friday—three or four appetizers and five or six entrees, a few desserts and a few wines. These include a catch of the day prepared al forno, for instance (baked with garlic, olives, plum tomatoes and served with fresh asparagus at $22.95), ravioli of the day, sometimes a special pork chop such as Pork Chop Valdostana (pan seared chop stuffed with spinach and fontina cheese served with roasted potatoes in a brown sauce with mushrooms and onions) and maybe a
Continued from page 3R chicken dish like Pollo Bolognese ($18.95), topped with prosciutto and mozzarella served in a sherry tomato cream sauce. Specialty pizzas can be had for lunch or dinner and are priced at $7.95 for a small cheese pizza to $17.95 for a large salmon and goat cheese pie. Medium pizzas range from $9.95 to $14.95. The Meridone ($13.95 for a medium pie), light and delicious, is topped with broccoli, mushrooms, onions, hot peppers, mozzarella and sauce. Desserts (mostly $5 and $6) on the regular menu are homemade and, besides those we sampled, include Crème Brulee ($5), cannoli, New York Style Cheesecake and Tiramisu. The calzones ($9.95) on the lunch menu are large but not as heavy as those I’ve had elsewhere and come in five varieties: four cheese, chicken or veal, vegetarian, peperonata (sweet peppers, onions, garlic and fresh tomatoes) and Italianino (pepperoni, sausage, pepperoncini and tomato sauce). Examples of the sandwiches made on the house bread and served with French fries (also $9.95) are Siciliano (grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and hot peppers), and Calabrese (sopressatta, marinated tomatoes, onions and mushrooms). Appetizers, salads, pasta and entrees are also available, many the same as on the dinner menu at a lower price as well as a number of other Italian specialties.
Hours, parking and such Hours at That Little Italian Restaurant are Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch, Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. for dinner. Parking is available on the street as well as in a large municipal parking at the back of the building from which patrons can enter through a back door. During the warm weather there is outdoor dining for up to 20 people on an enclosed brick patio in a quiet courtyard where tables are shaded by umbrellas.
Background Paolo Vitiello emigrated to the United States in November 1968. He was looking for work and his cousin was opening Da’Vinci’s Restaurant on Greenwich Avenue. That’s where he started out and worked from 1969-76. He ran a luncheonette and coffee shop in Larchmont for three years before opening That Little Italian Restaurant with his brother in 1980. Once married, he has three other children besides Louis. Vanessa is 27 and married, Rita is 21 and in her last year of college and Paul is 18 and in his first year of college. He also helps out at the restaurant during his school breaks.
