Restaurant review
Alba’s: Fine Italian cuisine, service haven’t wavered in 13 years
W
By Jananne Abel
idely known as the restaurant capital of Westchester, Port Chester has a wide array of dining establishments, both in terms of cuisine and character. And despite the influx of varied ethnic eateries over the years, the village is still notorious for its Italian food. One of the truly fine northern Italian eateries in Port Chester is coming up on its 13th anniversary and is still going strong. Alba’s Ristorante at 400 North Main St. is recognized for its professional service, the quality and freshness of its preparations, and consistency, which have not waned over the years. Not only that, but the warm, tasteful, well-thought-out décor, while having been designed by architect Grant Koerne of Untitled Incorporated out of New York City and constructed by FX &Y Corporation out of Manhattan, was overseen by Ray Balidemaj, the restaurant’s head chef/co-owner. It was in 1999, after five years in business, that the successful restaurant closed for five months for expansion and renovation, and Ray was the general contractor, on the job every day. “I know every nail,” he said. The interior was completely transformed and the seating capacity increased by 75—from 90 to 165. Ray moved to Rye Brook from the Bronx in 1998 to raise his children in a suburban setting. He and his wife Selvie have two sons at Blind Brook High School and a daughter in college. His sons wait on tables on the weekends. His brother, Sammy, who still lives in the Bronx, is his partner. He is the tall, trim, well-dressed maitre d’ who often meets and greets diners but also tends bar, waits on tables or serves wherever needed.
The a la carte menu at Alba’s offers a wide variety of chicken, veal, seafood, grilled meat and pasta dishes, from more common offerings like Penne alla Vodka ($17.95) to the more unusual fresh farm quail ($19.95), as well as an array of appetizers, soups and super fresh salads. Alba’s is one of the only places around where you can still get Caesar salad made to order tableside for two ($18), making it extremely popular. So are the whole branzino (filleted tableside unless you choose to do it yourself), Dover sole and other fish preparations as well as Osso Bucco in the wintertime. Swordfish, wild salmon, orata, tuna and John Dori (a delicate, mild fish from Dover) are some of the other fish featured at Alba’s. The waiter who prepared our Caesar Salad on a recent weekend said he makes 50 on a typical Saturday night. Every day there are specials: 2-3 appetizers, one of them always being cold antipasto bar, one or two salads, a soup, a pasta, 2-3 fish dishes and one meat dish. Pasta, bread sticks and all the desserts are
Head chef/co-owner Ray Balidemaj prepares a whole branzino for cooking in the kitchen at Alba’s Ristorante in Port Chester. made from scratch on the premises, adding to the all-around freshness and quality of the food. Prices are not out of line for the superb cuisine and service. Even the cost of dessert ($8-9), which I thought was high eight years ago, is now in range with that of other fine restaurants. Alba’s is a place you can take important guests and be assured to have a pleasurable dining experience and is certainly somewhere you can take your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day and not be disappointed. As has been their practice for all holidays, the regular menu will be in effect plus the usual specials of the day. All ladies will receive a rose. And, of course, reservations are a must.
Excellent culinary tradition
Brother and co-owner Sammy Balidemaj pours a glass of wine behind the fine northern Italian restaurant’s attractive bar.
Alba’s Ristorante was recognized for its fine food and service from the beginning, having been tabbed by the New York Times as one of the best restaurants in the suburban area in 1994, the year it opened (on St. Patrick’s Day), and every few years after that. Since its renovation, the New York Times has reviewed Alba’s 2-3 times and rated it “very good.” Customers have also given it high points in Zagat surveys. That’s a tribute to the Albanian-born owners, both hands-on restaurateurs. Having arrived in the United States in 1983, the brothers had previously been involved in several restaurants in the metropolitan area. Ray had owned Brunello’s in New Rochelle before the Balidemaj brothers came upon what they thought was the perfect location in Port Chester for their first joint venture. To ensure the freshest ingredients, Ray
goes to Hunt’s Point Market in New York City three times a week for produce, meat and seafood. Ray recommends the Risotto with Fresh Lobster, Porcini Mushrooms and Peas; Chicken Rollatini stuffed with spinach and wild mushrooms in a brandy sauce and Veal Chop Caprichosa, pan seared with arugula, tomato and fresh mozzarella on top, all specials. For appetizer, he suggests the stone crab when it’s in season and Nantucket bay scallops. Chicken rollatini (where the chicken is pounded and rolled) is made in a variety of combinations, Ray said, sometimes stuffed with spinach and goat cheese in a sauce of roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and artichokes (yummy!), sometimes stuffed with crabmeat, other times with broccoli and fontina.
Décor
From the outside Alba’s looks like the private home it was before having been converted into a restaurant and bar many years ago. It was enlarged from 2700 to 4700 square feet in 1999 to accommodate Alba’s growing number of patrons and painted an earthy yellow, the color of homes in the Italian countryside, according to architect Grant Koerne. The color makes the building stand out on the street but is in no way offensive. Hard wood floors, finely crafted wood paneling and doors, brick columns, a fireplace, bookcases and cream to golden shades on the walls emanate warmth and richness. The library, a small, cozy space off the main dining room, is used regularly on holidays and weekends and also for private Please turn to page 10R

Restaurant Review
Alba’s: Fine Italian cuisine, service haven’t wavered in 13 years parties. While others prefer the main dining room, I like this room better because it is quieter and more intimate. Green decorative light fixtures on the walls and ceiling as well as recessed lights provide the perfect ambiance. An ornately framed old world map, mirror, framed pictures of flowers and a rendering of Venice, a stained glass window with a curtain pulled to one side and lighted bookcases with real books decorate the room. White lace curtains hang at the window with brown and beige patterned drapes tied back on either side. The many-paned wooden doors between the rooms create a nice effect with one propped open and the other closed. Even the ceiling is interesting—recessed with individual boxes painted in the same cream to golden shade as the walls and ringed with wood. Tables are set with white cloths and napkins and surrounded by rich wooden chairs with royal blue suede cloth seats. Real flowers adorn the tables—red carnations on the nights we visited—as well as a unique glass olive oil decanter with a bunch of glass grapes tucked inside to hold the vinegar and small candles set in pewter-colored holders with star-shaped openings. Navy, green and pink floral carpeting cushions the center of the main dining room, with hard wood floors on either side and in the library. Here there is a fireplace flanked by bookcases, brick pillars, the same window treatment as in the library, more stained glass windows and a wine rack and cooler built into one wall. Classical music plays in the background. An attractive lounge is ringed with windows hung with navy and deep green draperies tied back. Wooden stools with royal blue suede cloth seats run the length of the black marble-topped bar. Two glasstopped wooden tables for four and two smaller marble-topped tables for two all have comfortable magenta chairs around them. Tan and white tile covers the floor adjacent to the bar, and hard wood flooring completes the picture. The lounge isn’t reserved for drinking; I’ve also seen patrons eat meals there. Since the restaurant’s renovation almost eight years ago, the décor has been beautifully maintained. Besides food and service, Ray said cleanliness is something that sets his restaurant apart. If the co-owner follows through with his current idea of closing for a few weeks this summer for a family vacation, he hopes during that time to have the entrance to the restaurant made more visible and appealing by adding a fence, a stone wall and some columns so customers don’t pass by without seeing it. Currently there are two small trees at each side of the driveway lit with decorative lights for that purpose.
Dinner for four
On a recent Saturday night, our party of four had an early reservation and was seated in the library.
A shot of the main dining room and expansive wine rack. We started our meal with drinks—a with house dressing (fresh herbs, garlic, Vodka and Cranberry ($9), margarita ($10), mustard, olive oil and balsamic vinegar scotch and soda ($9), all made with top shelf left to marinate for a week), which has a liquors, and a Heineken ($7). lemony flavor. A basket of Terranova Italian bread and The Insalata Trecolore with gorgonzola Alba’s crunchy, irresistible homemade cheese ($8), made up of arugula, endive bread sticks was brought to the table with and radicchio, the choice of another in our pats of slightly-frozen butter. So there’s a party, was also fresh and inviting. choice of butter or olive oil from the lovely In the mood for pasta rather than my decanter on the table, perhaps even with a usual shrimp, I went with Cappellini Cartouch of vinegar, for dipping. retera ($17.95), angel hair pasta with garlic, To go with our meal, we chose Chardon- extra virgin olive oil, cherry tomatoes and nay Le Bruniche Estate Bottled Nozzole black olives. It was light, flavorsome and 2002 ($30), accurately described on the just the right amount for a meal with no extensive wine list as “full-bodied and vel- leftovers. vety with an opulent complexity that carries Penne alla Vodka ($17.95), penne with into a long finish.” I recommend this wine vodka and fresh tomatoes in a delicate pink from Tuscany for its smoothness, dryness, sauce, was creamy and delicious. complex taste and reasonable price. Cappellini was substituted for linguine I suggested that our guests order the Cae- in the Linguine San Remo entrée upon sar Salad for two ($18), a special treat made request. This brought good-sized shrimp, at the table. The server ground anchovies into sun-dried tomatoes and arugula in a light a paste, added an egg yolk, oil, vinegar and tomato sauce over pasta ($19.95), another lemon, tossed it with romaine lettuce, grated light, appetizing dish. parmesan cheese and ground pepper into the The halibut special ($26.95), a modmixture for a delightfully fresh concoction erately sized piece of fish crusted with with a pleasing bite. It was served with of palm, cherry tomatoes and onion tossed sautéed spinach and red potatoes. An array of luscious desserts was wheeled to our table on a cart. We chose the chocolate almond cake ($8), which could be mistaken for a brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream. Served on a colorful plate decorated with chocolate sauce, it was rich and chocolatey, a good-sized piece perfect for three to share after a satisfying meal. We also ordered delicate mixed berries ($9)—blueberries, strawberries and raspberries—always a sweet, but not overly filling end to a meal. Two coffees ($5) brought the total tab with tax to $219.90. Our waiter was dynamic, albeit a little loud. He was attentive when needed and didn’t bother us or rush us so we were able to spend a leisurely evening dining at Alba’s.
Alba’s, which still looks like the private home from which it was converted into a restaurant and bar many years ago, is located at 400 North Main St.
Menu, wine list, desserts
Appetizers on Alba’s regular menu range from $10.95 for Vongole Oreganata
Continued from page 7R
(baked clams) and Lumache con Polenta (escargot with Italian corn meal) to $12.95 for Gamberi alla Alba (shrimp with beans, arugula, extra virgin olive oil and lemon). As a special appetizer on a recent visit, we had extraordinary crab cakes--two delightfully crispy crab patties with a small amount (I would have preferred more) of slightly spicy sauce made with mustard, mayonnaise, lemon and tobasco served with mixed baby greens on the side. Soups, from minestrone to Pasta e Fagioli, are $7 and $8. Besides the Caesar for two and trecolore, salads are $7, $1 extra with gorgonzola cheese. I can recommend the Insalata all Alba, a lovely combination of arugula, endive, peppers, olives and sundried tomatoes. And the house dressing is outstanding. Pastas range from $17.50 for Rigatoni Filleto di Pomodoro (rigatoni with fresh tomatoes, prosciutto and onions) to $19.95 for the Linguine San Remo mentioned earlier or Linguine al Vongole (linguine with white or red clam sauce). Chicken dishes go for from $18.50 for Pollo Alba (marinated breast of chicken with grilled polenta, roasted garlic and oregano) to $21 for Galleto alla Brace (grilled marinated Cornish hen). I can highly recommend the fresh farm quail with polenta, mushrooms and wild rice ($19.95) which I tried recently. Never having had quail, I decided to give it a whirl. The dish consisted of two small birds, marinated ahead to take away the gamey taste. The taste was similar to chicken, with some pieces a little crunchy. Although there’s not a lot of meat on the birds, with the polenta (a mush made with cornmeal which is a staple of Northern Italy) and wild rice, the entrée was plenty filling. The quail were cooked in a delectable three-mushroom sauce which kept the meat moist and made for a divine dinner. Veal entrées are $20.95 for Scallopine di Vitello alla Piccata (sautéed with lemon, capers and white wine) to $21.95 for Scallopine di Vitello alla Alba (topped with crabmeat, asparagus and fontina cheese in a cognac sauce). As far as seafood, there’s Shrimp Scampi or Fra Diavolo ($24.95) or Zuppe di Pesce (mixed seafood with fresh herbs and tomato broth), priced according to the market, as well as the daily fish specials. You can also get steaks and chops, as well as rack of lamb, for $27 and $28. The lunch menu offers most of the same items for a dollar or two less. The menu changes twice a year, with the most popular items carrying over from one menu to the next. The wine list, bound in a book, is extensive, featuring Champagne, sparkling wine, and red and white wines from Italy, France, California, Washington, Oregon, Argentina, Australia, Chile and Portugal. The book includes maps of the various wine regions. Prices range from $30 to $1,500. There is literally something for every palate and price range. No dessert menu exists. However, besides the chocolate almond cake and mixed berries mentioned earlier, there is always cheesecake and tira misu, and cakes vary from week to week. Some examples: chocolate mousse cake, napoleon, apple streudel and carrot cake. For a special treat, you can order Zabalonie--egg yolks, sugar, marsala wine and champagne blended tableside and served over fresh fruit.
Hours and parking
Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 12 noon to 3 p.m., dinner Monday through Friday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 5:30 to 11 p.m. The restaurant is closed Sunday except for private parties of from 40 to 125 people. Parking is available in a lot on the premises. However, because spaces are limited, there is valet parking Friday and Saturday night year-round and many nights during the week in the winter.
