Tarry Lodge: First class Italian cuisine in elegant surroundings I

By Jananne Abel

n this sluggish economy, it’s not a good time for restaurants, but, except for Wednesday when it was snowing and blowing, Tarry Lodge in Port Chester seems to be weathering the storm better than most. “I’m knocking on wood,” said co-owner and managing partner Nancy Selzer this week. “We’re happy and we’re busy. Considering the economic climate, we couldn’t be more pleased with the reception we’ve gotten. We are pleasantly surprised with the response we’ve gotten from the area.” After a million-dollar renovation of an old building at 18 Mill St. which had been damaged by fire and purchased at auction by Greenwich resident Joseph Bastianich, Tarry Lodge opened in October 2008. “We think we are a wellpriced option for people who want to dine out or want to entertain,” said Selzer. “I’m glad we didn’t open a very fancy restaurant in the fall of 2008.” The pizzeria-trattoria is owned by Bastianich, Mario Batali, Selzer and executive chef Andy Nusser, all well-known restaurateurs in Manhattan. This was their first venture in the suburbs. Selzer and Nusser are managing partners at Tarry Lodge as well as at Casa Mono and Bar Jamon in the City which are owned by the same four partners. Those restaurants focus on tapas and Spanish cooking. The partners decided to keep the name Tarry Lodge because of its long history. The longtime Italian restaurant, a Port Chester tradition, was owned and operated by the Rocca family for more than 50 years. It was established as an eatery in 1906, as noted in script on the outside of the olive

of August 2009, adding another 40 in season. “We got a little dry run last year,” said Selzer. “We will officially open it this year and hopefully it will be a resounding success.” The official opening of the terrazzo is planned for Easter Sunday, weather permitting. Last year only pizza and salad were offered there, “but we are 99% sure we will be offering the full menu this year, so we are excited about that,” said Selzer. “It was always a matter of being able to service a very large restaurant in a timely fashion.”

Special dinners

The attractive white marble bar and barroom at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester. This area is open for first come, first serve dining. green stucco building with white wood trim and brown awnings. Selzer only estimated the cost of the renovation, saying: “There’s a lot of marble in there.” The building was totally gutted and redone. The renovation took some time and employed local contractors such as L&M Roofing and LaBella Electric and North Main Street architect Michiel Boender. The new restaurant was designed by Lisa Eaton, who has done most of the restaurants in the Batali restaurant group. The result is a clean, simple elegance employing lots of tile, wood and marble, a black and white color scheme and featuring a white marble bar and white tablecloths. You can’t help being wowed by the décor which includes Tarry Lodge logos and leaf designs in the black and white

tile on the floor in the foyer and bar area, white marble window sills, stairways and tables in the bar and lots of wooden cabinets painted off-white and antiqued. Wine bottles are everywhere, even on wooden ledges built around weight-bearing poles in the barroom. Lighting is provided by large round globed fixtures on the walls and hanging over the bar as well as tiny candles on the tables. Walls are painted a mustard color with matching fabric sound barriers to keep the noise down. The front dining rooms downstairs and upstairs and barroom get plenty of natural light during the day. Gold floral print curtains hang at the many windows. I originally decided to feature Tarry Lodge this month as a wonderful option for Valentine’s Day. However, as it turns out, the restaurant is booked starting

Executive chef and managing partner Andy Nusser cooks a pizza in the wood-burning oven, tucked away in the kitchen.

at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14 when Nusser, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, is featuring a tasting menu. There is an antipasti course of Scallops Crudo (raw) with Lemon Truffle Vinaigrette, a pasta course of Chanterelle and Thyme Ravioli, an entrée of Roasted Guinea Hen for Two with Sweet Potato Gratinate and dessert of Strawberries with Aceto Manadori and Chocolate Hearts. You can have the dinner on its own for $100 for two (plus tax and gratuity) or $150 for two with paired wines, one with each course. “It’s going to be lovely,” said Selzer. However, she said Wednesday, “I’m afraid at the moment it’s pretty much sold out, but you can keep trying back for cancellations.” Fat chance of that. The regular menu as well as specials are available for brunch from 12-3 p.m., however, and there is still availability for that (or at least there was at press time). For special occasions and special dinners, it’s best to reserve well in advance. If you want to eat at prime time on a weekend, don’t call a few days ahead. But if you don’t mind eating early or late, you can get a reservation. The restaurant starts booking reservations one month ahead for the two first floor dining rooms or the two upstairs dining rooms and saves the tables in the bar area for walk-ins on a first come, first serve basis. “We also serve the full menu at the counter itself,” said Selzer, meaning the bar. When I’ve visited, I’ve noticed many people eating at the bar, so that’s not uncommon. The restaurant seats about 180, with the rooftop terrazzo, which was completed at the end

If you don’t already have a reservation for Valentine’s Day, Tarry Lodge has started organizing special dinners once a month, starting with a tasting tour of restaurateur and winemaker Joseph Bastianich’s Italian wines paired with a fivecourse tasting menu of regional dishes from chef Andy Nusser’s authentic trattoria menu. That took place Feb. 1. The next special dinner will be on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. when Joe’s mother, Lidia Bastianich, will share cooking tips and stories from her Italian homeland and guests will taste recipes from her new cookbook “Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy.” Included is a four-course dinner paired with wines from her son Joe’s wineries. The cost is $125 per person plus tax and gratuity and includes a personally signed copy of Lidia’s cookbook. The next dinner is on Wednesday, Mar. 10 at 6:30 p.m. when Steve Clifton will go head to head with Joe Bastianich, each offering their wines along with a tasting menu of Nusser’s trattoria fare. Taste the wines from Clifton’s Santa Barbara winery Palmina, made from traditional Italian varietals, along with Bastianich’s award-winning Italian beauties. The cost is $100 per person.

Cuisine, menus, service Executive chef Nusser, who started cooking with Mario Batali at Po, his first restaurant in Greenwich Village, said the cuisine at Tarry Lodge is all traditional Italian and “represents a little bit of all the BataliBastianich restaurants under one roof.” Having worked at Babbo, Otto and Casa Mono, all in Manhattan, he has borrowed ideas from them all. While Tarry Lodge is not a fancy restaurant and the owners consider it family-oriented, it is not inexpensive. Pizza ($10-17) is popular here. These are Roman-style, thin-crusted personal pizzas made in the restaurant’s woodfired oven, which is hidden Please turn to page 8R

Tarry Lodge: First class Italian cuisine in elegant surroundings away in the kitchen. Cut into six slices, they’re enough to feed two if you pair them with a salad. Nusser said the most popular pizza is Margherita, made with tomato, mozzarella and basil ($10), followed surprisingly by guanciale (unsmoked Italian bacon), black truffles and sunny side egg ($17). My husband and I split a meatball, jalapeno, tomato and fontina ($13) pie and found it tasty and satisfying. We paired it with the Grilled Shrimp Caesar Salad ($15), a good-sized portion with five grilled shrimp, long pieces of romaine lettuce, shaved parmesan cheese and crunchy croutons, and found it a filling lunch, in fact more than enough. The handmade pastas are also big sellers, said Selzer, and in particular the Tagliatelle Bolognese ($16) and Fusilli alla Crazy Bastard ($15). The latter is made with fresh goat cheese, beet greens, walnuts and roasted tomatoes. “It’s our signature dish that Andy made up based on a New Yorker cartoon,” said Selzer. A copy of the cartoon hangs on the wall in the restrooms upstairs. I haven’t yet had a chance to try this dish. Nusser said his goal is “to make dining here as interesting as possible.” The regular menu, which includes 16 unique antipasti (broken down into organic, fish and meat), five salads, 15 pizzas, eight pasta dishes, 10 entrées and six potato and vegetable sides plus a regular daily special, “never changes wholesale,” said Selzer. “Classic dishes will always be on it. We add and subtract things seasonally. There is a constant tweaking and progression. We can reprint menus once or twice a week depending on what’s available.” Besides the daily special, additional specials, presented on a little card, are only offered Monday through Thursday “when there is not quite the same crush of people,” said Selzer. “We don’t try to throw in any wrenches when it’s busy.” “This is an area where the chef can be creative and try out new things to see how they go over,” said Selzer. I can attest to the fact that the service is exceptional at Tarry Lodge and food comes out of the kitchen quickly. I felt a little rushed at an early Friday night dinner, although our waiter said he wasn’t rushing us, while there was a more

Only the pizzas, antipasti and salads can be had to go, and that policy isn’t expected to change anytime soon. “It is more of a purity of products,” said Selzer. “Handmade pastas don’t travel well.” The regular menu, which includes entrées such as Eggplant alla Parmigiana ($18), Whole Roasted Branzino ($29), Tuscan Grilled Pork Chop ($24), Skirt Steak with peperonata and salsa verde ($21), Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo wine) with polenta and horseradish ($19), Pollo Francese with artichokes and capers ($21) is offered all day long. In addition, there are lunch and brunch specials printed on a separate card. Desserts are all made on the premises except the biscotti which are purchased from That Little Chocolate Company just across the river in Byram. The husband of the woman who runs it works for Tarry Lodge. Desserts all cost $8 and include Panettone Pudding, Lemon Almond Cheese Cake, Panna Cotta and the Tarry Lodge Sundae. I shared an Apple Crostata with cinnamon gelato, and it was out of this world served warm with a crunchy topping. There is an extensive allItalian wine list with a tremendous price range, from $30 to $1,200. A small number of the few hundred offered are

Wine bottles are everywhere at Tarry Lodge, including on these wooden shelves around weight-bearing poles in the bar area. Tarry Lodge website, the wine list was created with quality and value in mind.

Dinner for three On a recent Friday night visit, my husband, daughter and I enjoyed an early dinner at Tarry Lodge. We sat down and were immediately served a plate of lovely focaccia made in the pizza oven along with a dish of strong-tasting olive oil for dipping in which a handful of black and green olives were swimming. To go with our meal, my husband ordered a glass of the San Francesco Ciro Rosso Classico 2007 ($14), a smooth dry red wine, and I had a glass of the Remoissenet Bourgogne Blanc 2007 ($14), also dry and smooth. Both were recommended by our waiter upon learning of our preferences. The wines were served in small decanters used to refill our glasses at regular intervals.

Piquillos ($8) and Octopus with Baby Potatoes ($8). Each comes in a cute little dish. The farro was tasty and filling, like nothing I’d ever eaten before. The lump crab, mixed with apples, celery root and scallion aioli, was delicate and a nice combination with the sweet peppers from Northern Spain that serve as “a beautiful vessel to stuff anything,” according to Nusser. We got two of these stuffed peppers in a small crock over frisée flavored with a delicious lemon citronette. The octopus is braised in its own liquid with a little white wine, cut into coins and served with tiny potatoes, all tossed in a blood orange citronette. We shared all of these antipasti, a nice gorgonzola with walnuts salad ($11), a pasta and an entrée. The salad brought a good-sized portion of frisée, small squares rather than chunks of gorgonzola cheese, glazed walnuts and cranberries in a

light vinaigrette. The Osso Buco alla Milanese ($29) was tender and delicious. The veal shank is braised in white wine, veal stock and cooks in its own juices until it is falling off the bone, said Nusser. According to the traditional recipe, it is cooked with a touch of tomato, diced carrots, onions, celery and garlic. A long spoon for scooping the marrow out of the large bone comes with this dish. It is served with barlotto (barley risotto). For pasta, my choice was the Pumpkin Lune Ravioli ($15). Eight delicate handmade ravioli are filled with roasted and pureed butternut squash and cooked in sage butter, honey, balsamic vinegar, parmesan cheese, oregano and nutmeg. This wonderfully flavored dish is finished with grated amaretto cookies. Our waiter convinced us to order a vegetable side—and I was thrilled with our choice of the roasted cauliflower with capers ($8). I spotted flat mushrooms and greens in the mixture as well. It tasted like no cauliflower I’ve ever had before—so much better than steamed and with the distinct taste of lemon. For dessert, both choices ($8 each) were scrumptious. I had the chocolate cake, a small round cake with a coating like a brownie and a soft center served warm with yummy pistachio gelato and chopped bitter oranges. The cake was topped with powdered sugar. The panna cotta, a stiff custard, was of course much lighter. It came with candied fennel and tart grapefruit sorbet, not my favorite flavors but definitely interesting. Three coffees finished our meal. The milk for coffee is served warm in a cute matte stainless steel pouring vessel. A variety of sweeteners come in long, narrow packets, many printed with the Tarry Lodge logo. Our tab for three amounted to $149.26 without tip.

Hours and parking Tarry Lodge is open Monday through Friday for lunch from 12-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday for brunch during the same hours. Dinner starts at 3 p.m. and runs to 9 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and until 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Self parking is available on the street or in the Tarry Lodge lot on Mill Street adjacent to Sam’s Bar and Grill. From Wednesday through Sunday, there is complimentary valet parking. Cars are parked in the Empire Tool parking lot on Abendroth Avenue, across the street from the restaurant.

Italian marketplace coming next door An Italian marketplace is under construction in the former Columbia Elevator building next to Tarry Lodge. It will offer “all the stuff we use to cook in our restaurant,” said Nusser. Joe Bastianich has gotten approvals from the Village of Port Chester for the venture. It is expected to open in May, said Selzer.
