Doral Arrowwood: A wonderful place to celebrate with your valentine W
BY JANANNE ABEL
hen I was considering local places to recommend taking your valentine on or about Feb. 14, Doral Arrowwood’s Atrium restaurant came to mind. I remember one year my birthday fell on a Monday and my husband and I had decided to celebrate at Provare, Doral Arrowwood’s lovely Italian restaurant which had its own separate entrance. Thinking it was a Monday night and Provare wouldn’t’ be busy, I didn’t bother to make a reservation. When we got there, we were shocked to discover it had closed after more than 10 years. So we went to The Atrium instead and were pleasantly surprised by the experience. Thinking about The Atrium as a Valentine’s Day destination, I checked out Arrowwood’s website (doralarrowwood.com) and found that they are indeed offering a special Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 6 to 11 p.m. While there’s a Saturday Night Dinner Dance each week for $39.50 per person which includes a sumptuous buffet and a musical group playing for your listening and/or dancing pleasure, the Valentine’s buffet dinner includes extra special offerings and is priced at $48.95 per person plus sales tax and 20% service charge. Do note that the service charge is automatically added to your check and you don’t need to add a tip in the space for it on your credit card slip. Doral Arrowwood Hotel and Conference Center is located at 975 Anderson Hill Rd. in Rye Brook. To make it extra special, the Valentine’s buffet includes, for example, chilled oysters and clams on the half shell, traditional Caesar salad with lemon pepper grilled chicken in
addition to a salad buffet, lobster bisque with brandy, potato martinis made to order in a martini glass with your choice of topping—either whipped Idaho potatoes with buttermilk, creamy sweet potato purée or mashed Peruvian purple potatoes; a ravioli station where your choice between two types of ravioli is prepared right in front of you; and a seafood entrée of clams, mussels and shrimp in a saffron aromatic vermouth broth in addition to a medley of other meat and fish entrées. Besides the appetizers, salads and entrées, “we’re focusing on desserts,” said Executive Chef Michael Schmutzer. Besides the usual sumptuous array of tortes, deep dish pies, berries, cheesecakes, fresh fruit compotes, miniature pastries and the pastry chef’s Specialties of the Day, the valentine menu includes freshly prepared crepes with brandied cherries and bittersweet chocolate sauce. Pastry chef Erwin Reithl “will be out there cooking it,” said Schmutzer. A 5-piece band, the name of which was not available as of

The spectacular dessert buffet at The Atrium is a focal point of every meal, either a la carte or buffet. Dessert will be the focus of the Valentine’s Dinner Dance buffet on Feb. 12.
Never having experienced a Saturday night at The Atrium, my husband and I invited two friends to join us last week. The food was of the highest quality, beautifully presented, and the service was superb. “It’s a seasonal menu; with the four seasons we change the menu,” said Austrianborn Schmutzer, who trained in Europe where he did an apprenticeship with backup training. “I’ve been doing this since I’m 15 years old,” he said, and has spent 22 years in the industry. In the summer, he said, “we have a seafood extravaganza.” Schmutzer came to the United States 11 years ago. He’s been executive chef at Arrowwood in Rye Brook for three years, previously worked for one year as executive sous chef with Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill in Tarrytown and before that was employed for seven years as executive sous chef at Arrowwood. Of course, there’s so much more on the buffet than you could ever eat, so you pick your favorite dishes. For appetizer, the Sliced Asian Cured Graved Lox with Peppercorn and Dill served with wasabi mayonnaise was delightful. I also enjoyed the array of rolls with fresh blue cheese (there were also other international cheeses), three different greens with all the
trimmings in a salad bar with multiple dressings, cold grilled vegetables with mozzarella, eggplant, zucchini and roasted peppers in a balsamic dressing, Mediterranean chickpea salad with radishes, artichokes and broccoli florets and cheese-filled tortellini draped with sun-dried tomatoes, calamata olives and pesto dressing. I passed up the seared blackened spiced sea scallops and the seared sesame crusted tuna with teriyaki dipping sauce, although they both looked appealing. Soups were yummy clam chowder with oyster crackers and onion soup, the latter sadly missing the cheese. Looking at the menu afterwards, I see that the onion soup comes with a gruyere cheese crouton, so maybe we missed that. I will say that I’ve now become more educated about the buffet and will know more the next time I go. There was a pasta station with a choice of two pastas, various ingredients and sauces. I went with the fusilli with roasted red peppers, broccoli and shrimp in a pesto sauce which is put together and cooked in front of you in short order. I didn’t know that I could have also had wild mushroom ravioli in truffle butter sauce with garlic bread and grated parmesan made to order. The braised beef short ribs with burgundy sauce and root vegetables were tender and amazing. The potato crusted Chilean sea bass in a citrus beurre blanc was delicate and exceptional. The teriyaki glazed Atlantic salmon with bok choy and sake beurre blanc had great flavor, but the glaze overpowered the delicate taste of the fish. Please turn to page 6

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Doral Arrowwood: A wonderful place to celebrate with your valentine I found the home style chicken breast with mushrooms and spinach in a port cherry sauce a bit dry. If that wasn’t enough, and I haven’t mentioned all the choices, I had to save room for a piece each of meat from the carving station: oven roasted beef tenderloin with horseradish sour cream and chestnut honey roasted turkey breast with cranberry jelly and house made gravy. Everyone in our party raved
about the whipped buttermilk potatoes—real comfort food. Besides those, for a starch you had the choice of saffron basmati rice pilaf. For vegetable, the glazed carrots and broccoli florets were yummy, and that’s coming from a picky vegetable eater. To go with our meal we selected the Pouilly Fumé ($42) from The Atrium’s extensive wine list, containing 500 wine selections from all over the world. Their wine list won the
2010 Wine Spectator Award. Wines on the list start at $35 and go up from there. Of course the spectacular dessert buffet is to die for with the delicacies mentioned above plus a semi-sweet Belgian chocolate fountain for dipping strawberries, a sundae bar with vanilla and chocolate ice cream as well as one flavor of soft serve frozen yogurt and a selection of toppings like shredded coconut, M&Ms and butter crunch chunks. the desserts we tried included delicious bread pudding, tiramisu in a cup topped with whipped cream and garnished with a rum-soaked lady finger and chocolate éclairs. There were also sugar free cookies. Although we were too busy eating and talking to dance, we enjoyed the soothing music from the 5-piece band and its female singer. Our meal for four including the wine and a beer came to $253.40 which integrated tax

and 18% gratuity. With a space on the credit card slip for a tip, we forgot it was already included and added more. So our waiter made out like a bandit this time around. The buffet is open until 10:30, with dessert and music continuing until 11 p.m. If you’d like to make a reservation for the Valentine’s Dinner Dance or any other meal at The Atrium, call 9356600. You can check out the full menus for yourself at doralarrowwood.com.
Sweethearts Package
If you want to get away with the one you love for a romantic retreat close to home to celebrate Valentine’s Day, you can take advantage of Doral Arrowwood’s Sweethearts Package on Saturday, Feb. 12. With this package, you will be welcomed with a champagne check-in, sample hors d’oeuvres at a Manager’s Reception and enjoy the Valentine’s Dinner Dance. If you like, you can unwind in the Jacuzzi or take a dip in the heated indoor/outdoor pool and/or continue the evening after the dinner dance with late night dancing in the Pub. You will be pampered with turndown service complete with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. The package also includes The Atrium’s fabulous Sunday Brunch the next morning. You can linger for a late checkout at 2 p.m. This elegant package is priced at $279 per couple. It also includes a 15% discount on a massage or facial. You should make your reservations for the Valentine’s Dinner Dance and Sunday Brunch at the time of booking your “Sweethearts Package.” Call 939-5500 to book the package.
Sunday Brunch
The Sunday Brunch, at which you can relax to the sounds of a jazz trio, is offered every Sunday with two seatings, one at 11:30 a.m. and one at 1:45 p.m. The cost is $36.50 per person for adults, $18.50 for children (ages 4-10) plus tax and 18% gratuity. As just a sampling, the brunch includes fruits, berries and gourmet cheese, salads, antipasti display and imported olive bar, shrimp cocktail, smoked Norwegian salmon, white fish and brook trout, salad bar, roasted beef sirloin and turkey at the carvery, an omelet and waffle station, specialty entrées and classic brunch items such as cheese blintzes, bacon, country sausage, scrambled eggs with chives and a spectacular dessert buffet with homemade breads, deep dish pies, traditional European cakes, pumpkin pie and cheesecake, cookies, brownies, the ice cream bar and frozen yogurt, fresh fruit and fat free and sugar free delights. The brunch includes a glass of sparkling wine or mimosa. Parking at Doral Arrowwood is either valet or self parking up on a hill overlooking the hotel and conference center. It’s a bit of a walk in this cold weather for the latter, but it also forces you to get some exercise after a satisfying meal.
