RESTAURANT REVIEW

Tandoori gives customers excellent Taste of India By Jananne Abel

I

t’s hard to miss Tandoori Taste of India not only because of its wonderful location at the corner of North Main and Highland streets in Port Chester but also because of the striking rust, brown and beige striped awning displaying the name of the restaurant out front. As the eatery stands out on the block, so too does its authentic Indian cooking which is second to none.

The smell of Indian spices hits you as you enter Tandoori, a simply decorated, yet beautifully comfortable eating spot where service is superb. Prices are high when compared with those of the Indian restaurants on 6 th Street in Manhattan but certainly not for Westchester. Dinner prices range from $9.95 for vegetarian dishes like Alu Gobi (medium spiced potatoes, tomato and cauliflower) to $21.95 for Adraki Ghosht Ki Champan (New Zealand lamb chops oozing with juices, marinated in yogurt, ginger, garlic, cardamom, grilled in the tandoor oven and served with rice and fresh vegetables). Chicken dishes are $12.95 and $13.95, lamb entrées mostly $13.95, beef dishes $12.95 and seafood entrées $15.95 to $17.95. From mild to very hot, there are dishes from both the north and south of India to suit all on the menu. They range from mild kebabs and Tandoori Chicken and

Shrimp to spicy Chicken or Lamb Madras, to the very spicy Chicken, Lamb, Beef or Shrimp Vindalu. And of course you can also get all the interesting flat and puffed breads India is known for. The menu clearly spells out the spiciness of each entrée. Manager Rajan Kunchandy of Port Chester stressed that even the Vindalu dishes aren’t so hot that you can’t taste them unless customers request them that way. As a shrimp lover, I’m particularly fond of the succulent Tandoori Shrimp Masala and a new find, Shrimp Karahi, both made with jumbo prawns in medium spicy tomato sauces. There are also a number of interesting appetizers. A 12-course lunch buffet includes an appetizer, three meat and three vegetable dishes, lentils, basmati rice, three or four salads served with bread and a dessert for the very reasonable price of $9.95. A Sunday brunch featuring 15-16 different items

Tandoori Taste of India, with its striking striped awning, is situated in a visible location at the corner of North Main and Highland streets.

Working in the kitchen, Ohidul Alam Chowdsuroi lifts a completed poori, a puffed up Indian bread, out of the oil in which it is made at Tandoori Taste of India restaurant in Port Chester. goes for only $11.95. The lunch buffet changes daily except that Tandoori Chicken is always one of the offerings. Owners Bharat and Bubi Patel of Greenburgh also own and operate an Indian restaurant in Elmsford called Malabar Hill. Bharat oversees Tandoori while Bubi runs Malabar Hill. The brothers are happy with the Port Chester location because of its visibility and accessibility to parking in an adjacent municipal lot on Highland Street. Since the restaurant opened on July 13, 1997, business has been good. Bharat says he does 150 dinners per night on the weekends and a decent business during the week as well. The name of the restaurant comes from the traditional rounded-top tandoor oven made of brick and clay. It is used to bake food over direct heat produced from a smoky fire. The dough for the delicious Indian bread naan is slapped directly onto the oven’s clay walls and left to

bake until puffy and lightly browned. Head chef Atta Khan, a native of Pakistan who now lives in Elmsford, showed me how that is done. He is one of six in the kitchen. Meats cooked in the tall, cylindrical tandoor are usually skewered and thrust into the oven’s intense heat which cooks a chicken half in less than five minutes. Chicken and other meats cooked via this method, which gives them a red-orange tint, are identified as tandoori chicken, etc. “It is very healthy food because all the fat drips out,” said Patel. “It might be dry, but it is very healthy.”

Décor Yes, the décor at Tandoori is Indian, but it is subtle and tasteful. My 9year-old knew right away that there is an Indian woman made of brass holding out a plate of rock candy in the lobby, something I had never noticed. Another similar figure dressed in a red and gold costume wel-

comes guests to the Lshaped dining room which seats 70. It is formally decorated with dark green carpeting, tables set with dark green tablecloths covered with white ones and tallbacked wooden chairs with maroon seats. The walls have warm wood paneling on the bottom and ornately designed wallpaper with a light background on top. Light is provided by shaded lamps on the walls, chandeliers and red globed candles on the tables. Dark pink, green, yellow and cream striped curtains hang at the bottom of the large storefront windows and are pulled back to let in the maximum amount of light. Wall hangings imported from India and a pleasantly gurgling water fountain embellish the dining room. Two of the hangings are diamondshaped embroidered Indian fabric inset with mirrored pieces while others display figures dressed in Indian garb in pink, red and white. At the Please turn to page 6R

Tandoori gives customers excellent Taste of India end of the dining room hangs a large painting on cloth of two Indian women with pots on their heads wearing pink and green dresses. The painting is decorated with colorful sequins to give it added texture.

Specialties Among Tandoori’s specialties are Chicken Tikka Masala (chicken cooked in a tandoor oven, cut into chunks and served in a special creamy tomato sauce at $13.95), Shrimp Malabar (jumbo shrimp sautéed with mustard seeds, red chili, black pepper and cooked in a medium spiced coconut curry sauce at $17.95), Lamb Bhuna (tender chunks of lamb slowly cooked in its own juices with special herbs and spices and served in a thick gravy seasoned with tomatoes at $13.95) and Sag Paneer (homemade cheese cubes cooked with delicately spiced spinach gravy at $10.95). Popular appetizers are Masala Dosa (paper thin lentil rice crepe cooked on the grill stuffed with potatoes, green peas and cashews at $7.95) and Vegetable or Meat Samosa (triangular pastry stuffed with potatoes and green peas at $4.95 or stuffed with ground lamb and peas at $5.25). Both are served with tamarind sauce, a brown sweet and sour sauce made from the tropical tamarind fruit.

Continued from page 3R

In addition to a full bar, Tamarind offers a selection of 50 different international beers.

Dinner for four On our visit to Tandoori last week, we ate more than usual so I would have a taste of a variety of foods fresh in my mind. Often when we eat at Tandoori we skip the appetizers and dessert and still have plenty to eat. For appetizer, we sampled the Masala Dosa ($7.95), the paper thin crepe stuffed with spiced potatoes described above. The rolled crepe is so large that it is hangs off the plate and draws attention from other customers. This delicious offering is served with coconut chutney and spicy lentil sauce. Vegetable Bhajias ($5.95), potato, eggplant, spinach, paneer (fresh, unripened cheese), onion and cauliflower fritters served with tamarind sauce, also proved a hit with everyone at our table. Mint sauce made with lemon juice, coriander, yogurt, green pepper and hot chilis was also provided as a dipping sauce, and I liked that one, which has just the right amount of bite, even more. For bread we chose yummy Paratha, multi-layered Indian bread lightly fried on the griddle. Drinks included a Flying Horse Royal Lager from India, which comes in a 22-

Patrick Connolly, 15, of Greenwich serves himself from the brunch buffet at Tandoori. ounce bottle ($6.25), a Pina Colada (always good here), a virgin Pina Colada ($4.50) and a Mango Lassi, a refreshing Indian yogurt drink flavored with mango ($3.50). For the main course, we selected my favorite, Tandoori Shrimp Masala (Tandoori Shrimp in a medium spiced creamy tomato sauce at $17.95). Beef Korma (beef cubes cooked in a creamy almond and cashew nut sauce at $12.95) was mild as described but the meat was dry. Shrimp Karahi, shrimp stir fried in a special pot called a balti, similar to a wok, with fresh ginger, garlic, tomatoes, green pepper and onions to create a medium spiced salsa, was excellent. Chicken Malai Kebab, white meat chicken chunks marinated in a specially made ginger garlic sauce cooked in a tandoor oven and served on a sizzler topped with fried onions, was mild but interesting at $13.95. All dishes come with pleasant tasting basmati rice, a light grain garnished with green peas, fried onions, cashews, almonds and raisins. Devouring the appetizers and bread and bringing some of each entrée home for leftovers, we all dived into a cool treat called Mango Madness ($4.50) for dessert. Served in a banana split dish, it is made up of two scoops of coconut and one scoop of mango ice cream topped with mango sauce, whipped cream and

cherries. As far as dessert, the rice pudding, which is often included in the lunch buffet, is also a good bet. Light and creamy, it is flavored with saffron, cashews, almonds, pistachios and raisins. Our check came to $116.47 without tip.

Background and hours Bharat Patel, 47, came to the United States from Gujarat in the northwest part of India 23 years ago. Before getting involved in the restaurant business 12 years ago, strictly by chance, he ran a stationery store in the

Rajan Kunchandy of Port Chester, manager, and Bharat Patel of Greenburgh, co-owner, mix drinks behind the bar at Tandoori. Our service was attentive with help coming from every direction. Besides the extremely pleasant manager, assistant manager, waiters and busboys, on the weekends there are also hosts dressed in saris, one being Bharat Patel’s wife Mina. To make staffing easier, Tandoori owns a residence on Fawcett Street in Port Chester to house five of its employees, said Patel.

Riverdale section of the Bronx. He was married here, has two children, a girl, 14, and a boy, 16, and has had “a good life so far,” he said. Tandoori Taste of India is open seven days a week. The lunch buffet is open from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday while the brunch buffet is available on Sunday from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Dinner is served every day from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
