RESTAURANT REVIEW
Acuario: Cute little Peruvian place specializing in seafood By Jananne Abel
T
here’s a little Peruvian restaurant in Port Chester that’s been around since 1990. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. In fact, although it’s around the corner from my office, I never thought about eating there until a few years ago when the owners renovated and made the decor more appealing. Having checked it out a few times in the last month, I’ve discovered that Acuario Restaurante is actually somewhat of a find. The cuisine, especially the seafood, is tasty and reasonable, you can get a good bottle of wine for $13, and the aquatic atmosphere is warm and charming.
Saida Ochiro of Port Chester opened Acuario, among the early Peruvian restaurants in the village, at 137 Irving Ave. on Feb. 9, 1990. Son Eduardo, now 30, took over the restaurant four years ago and is the head chef. His sister Barbara, 28, serves as waitress and manager. The family immigrated to Port Chester from Callao, Peru in 1986. Acuario (“aquarium” in English) is small and cozy, seating 40 at square shellacked wooden tables and darker wooden chairs. Small candles on each table help provide the
warm atmosphere. Walls are yellow accented with orange sponge painting on the upper half with wood paneling underneath. A large stuffed fish fills one wall, small wooden fish, a net, a buoy, a wooden boat, a framed photograph of a boat bearing the saying “Life is but a Dream” and a Peruvian flag hang on others. A net filled with starfish is positioned in one corner under the TV. The floor is beige ceramic tile. A service bar with three wooden stools figures at the back of the restaurant. I haven’t yet tried half the

The dining room at Acuario Restaurante in Port Chester is decorated to reflect its aquatic name and seafood specialties. items on the good-sized menu, but I can say that for shrimp and seafood lovers especially, Acuario is definitely worth trying. It’s not fancy and the service isn’t consistent, but everything I’ve had has been tasty and nicely presented. However, don’t expect everything to be perfect or you may be disappointed.
Dinner for four On one of my family’s recent visits to Acuario, the adults ordered a bottle of wine, one of two Chardonnays from Chile, for $13. The Concha Y Toro wasn’t bad, but we found the Gato Blanco Chardonnay we had chosen the week before at the same price, also from Chile, was drier and even better. These are among the small list of Peruvian, Chilean, Californian and Italian red and white wines available by the bottle from $8 to $25 or by the glass. Service here is casual and by no means professional. As an example, the wines are not opened at the table but brought to the table already open for tasting. Waitresses do speak English and there is little problem with communication; however, some speak more than others. Barbara Ochiro’s is perfect. Water was served with
slices of lime floating in it, a nice touch. Warm, crunchy rolls cut into pieces are served in a basket with your meal. On our first visit they came without asking before the meal; on our second visit we had to request them. A yummy green salsa made with jalapenos, blended to the perfect spiciness to suit our palates, is brought to each table and makes a great dip or spread for the bread. It can also be added to any dish to spice it up if you so desire. Three of the four entrées drew rave reviews while the fourth, the fried fish, I found lovely but my 11-year-old thought was bland. The Arroz con Camarones ($14) was superb. It brought nine good-sized shrimp nicely arranged on a large bed of yellow rice with vegetables in it. The rice, extremely tasty, was actually red in color, but I was not able to find out what makes it that way. The onion salad (salsa criolla) promised to come with this dish on the menu did not arrive and it was too late to ask once we realized the omission. The Pescado Sudado ($11) consisted of an ample piece of fresh cod cooked with onions, tomatoes and peppers and seasoned with fresh spices and
herbs. The fish had a delicate flavor which was perfectly enhanced by the vegetables and seasonings. Filete de Pescado Frito ($11), breaded filet of fried fish served with a choice of two of the following: rice, salad, fries, beans, fried yucca or tostones (plantains) was flavorful but obviously not spicy. Bistek Encebollado ($10), grilled or fried steak topped with sautéed onions and tomatoes, was surprisingly tender and juicy. I opted for the grilled version and the meat had an excellent grilled flavor. Although the menu didn’t explicitly say that this dish came with any sides, I asked for a salad and received one. The salad here comes in a bowl and consists of a few kinds of lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and large dark and light croutons with a tangy Italian dressing. We were looking forward to the alfajor ($1.50), buttery Peruvian cookies with dulce de leche filling topped with powdered sugar, but there was no dessert available on this occasion although we had eaten them at Acuario the week before. Desserts are obviously not one of this Peruvian restaurant’s specialPlease turn to page 6R

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Acuario: Cute little Peruvian place specializing in seafood ties, but the cookies make a pleasantly sweet ending to a great meal. Our dinner for four came to a reasonable $63.28.
Specialties, menu and lunch As its name implies, Acuario specializes in sea-
food. Manager Barbara Ochiro recommended the Jalea, which comes in a “personal” version for $15 or an “especial” version for $23. These are deep fried mixed seafood platters consisting of fish, shrimp, calamari, crab, clams and mussels. Parihuela ($14), the assorted seafood bouillabaisse, was
another recommendation and something I plan to try on my next visit. Continuing with the seafood specialties, Ochiro suggested the Pescado a lo Macho ($16), fried filet of fish topped with a spicy tomato and herb-based sauce with assorted seafood, and the Ceviche, a Peruvian spe-

cialty which comes in six varieties at Acuario. We in fact ordered the Ceviche Acuario ($16), which consists of shrimp, fresh fish, octopus, squid, little neck clams, mussels, crab and onions marinated in lemon juice, cilantro and spices and served on a colorful plate with cold Peruvian corn and
cold boiled potato quarters on the side, on one occasion and thoroughly enjoyed it. Other varieties include plain fish, plain shrimp and other seafood combinations depending on your preference. Ochiro also pointed to the Lomo Saltado ($9), another Peruvian specialty, as a good bet. It is made with strips of beef sautéed with onions and tomatoes served over fries with rice on the side. Three appetizers Ochiro recommended, which have recently been added to the menu, don’t appeal to me but may to others: Anticuchos ($7), three skewers of beef heart seasoned to perfection and served with boiled potatoes and corn; Pancita ($7), grilled pork stomach seasoned with fine Peruvian spices and served with boiled potatoes; and Rachi ($7), grilled tripe seasoned with fine Peruvian spices and served with boiled potatoes. If you like shrimp, don’t pass up the Camarones al Ajo ($14), 10 shrimp swimming in a garlic butter sauce with rice and the nice salad described above on the side. There are plenty more appetizers, salads, soups, chicken, beef, fish and seafood dishes on the menu to choose from, so you’re bound to find something to your liking. A kids’ menu includes dishes priced from $5 to $7 including some half orders, a cheeseburger with fries, chicken fingers and breaded fried fish. The lunch menu is served until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For $7 you can get soup or salad, hot meal of the day and a drink. There are also appetizers for $4 to $7, ceviche for $8 and entrées for $6 and $7, as well as Jalea for $11. Drinks include Peruvian, Mexican and domestic beer ($3), wines as described above, chicha (the Peruvian purple corn drink) by the glass ($2) or pitcher ($6), sodas ($1.50), juices ($2), tea, coffee and hot chocolate ($1).
Hours and parking Acuario is open every day but Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., closing at 9 p.m. on Sunday. Parking is on the street during the day Monday through Friday. You can also park in the MetroNorth lot on Broad Street at no charge at night or on the weekends.
