range in flavors from Orange Kiss ($8) to Green Coconut ($8). The lunch menu contains about half the items as the dinner menu plus a few additional lunch specials. Regrettably, none of the Signature Rolls are offered during lunchtime which is 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The lunch portions are slightly smaller than the dinner dishes, but nothing on the menu is more than $11.

olden dragons flank the entrance to Euro Asian, the newest culinary addition to the Waterfront at Port Chester, located at 30 Westchester Ave., corner of Waterfront Place. One of a chain of nine restaurants, Euro Asian is the owners’ first establishment in New York. The other eight restaurants are located throughout Connecticut and have a variety of names such as Asian Bistro in Mansfield. John Goh, general manager of Euro Asian, explained that Port Chester was chosen by the owners because it provided prime retail space and allowed them to expand into New York. Goh, who is at the restaurant six nights a week and was monitoring the tables on our second visit, was born in Malaysia and has been in the United States for 20 years. He previously worked for Haru in Times Square and Koo in Ridgefield, Conn. and is also involved in the Mansfield branch of the Euro Asian chain. He currently resides in Queens and hires many of the chefs and sushi chefs from the Queens area. As general manager, Goh is directly involved in the selection of menu items and specials. He described the food as a combination of Malaysian, Thai, Japanese and European. He creates dishes so “each plate looks like it’s European, but it tastes like Thai, Malaysian, or Japanese.” Euro Asian’s sous chef, Fatt Wong, is responsible for the extraordinary presentation and plating of the dishes. Goh described his inspiration as “omakase,” the Japanese word for surprise. Dishes are prepared differently each time they are ordered and are designed
to surprise the customer when they are brought out of the kitchen. Sushi, entrée specials, and the soup of the day change weekly while the dessert items will change every two to three months to coordinate with the seasons. Opening in December, Euro Asian filled a gap in Port Chester and Rye Brook’s restaurant offerings. As the first Asian fusion restaurant, Euro Asian provides local diners and movie-goers with artfully presented Asian cuisine in a colorful and contemporary atmosphere. Dining at Euro Asian on both a Saturday and Sunday night, we found the large restaurant busy but not crowded, with our pick of tables to choose from. Our party of four greatly enjoyed the unique menu items, imaginatively crafted presentation and dishware, and Asian atmosphere. However, we found some of the wait staff to be inexperienced and amateurish. Since the restaurant only opened about a month ago, we assume the service

Hopefully with a few more months of experience under the staff’s belt, we will be able to say that Euro Asian’s dramatically plated Asian fusion cuisine is an excellent addition to Port Chester’s eclectic restaurant scene.
Menu
Euro Asian’s menu offers a selection of 16 appetizers which does not include the three soups and seven salads. The starters include everything from the more traditional Asian dishes such as Edamame ($5) or dumplings ($5/8) to unique twists such as the Thai Crab Cake ($12) or Asian Way Pizza ($15), a thin pancake topped with tuna, onion, and a creamy sauce. The salad portions are plentiful and offer more than the traditional greens. For example, the Kani Salad ($7) contained thin strips of crabmeat and cucumber tossed in an orange spicy mayonnaise sauce. Served in a bamboo leaf and presented in a doughnut-hole shaped bowl, this salad crunchily whets your appetite for the next course. The entrées are divided into three sections. Eleven meat and fish based main dishes range from $18 to $33 and feature Prawns Tempura ($18) and Cod ($26). According to General Manager Goh, their most popular entrées are the Kobe Steak which is sold at market price and the Chilean Sea Bass ($26) which is steamed and served with a ginger scallion sauce. The remainder of the entrées are sushi items. The diner has a choice between an assortment of sashimi and sushi rolls or one of the chef’s Signature Rolls. With nine pieces of sushi priced at $25, the Sushi Bar Entrées seem overpriced. I suggest you stick with one of the Signature Rolls which range from $13 to $16 and contain eight large pieces. All in all, the Signature Rolls seem to be the best deal for the main course.
Containing well presented, unique combinations of ingredients, these rolls are satisfying, flavorful, and filling. For those who just want a roll on the side or a few pieces of sashimi to tide you over before the main course, Euro Asian offers a large selection of rolls and sashimi a la carte. The sashimi ranges from $3 to $6 and includes Spicy Tuna ($3), Eel ($4), and Alaskan King Crab ($6). All sashimi is served with grated white radish, wasabi, and soy sauce. White rice can be purchased on the side for an additional $2. The dessert menu was a bit surprising to my companions and I who had just eaten a delicious Asian fusion meal. We were surprised to see items such as Key Lime Pie ($8.25), Carrot Cake ($8.25), and Mud Pie ($8.25). At $8.25, these desserts are pretty pricey; however, at both of our meals the four of us shared one dessert which was plenty and satisfied our sweet tooth. A tall slice of light and fluffy carrot cake was decorated with strawberry sauce in the shape of a fish vertebrae, served with green tea ice cream and a white chocolate swizzle stick laid on top. Goh remarked that he would be changing the desserts regularly. I look forward to seeing more of the European-Asian mix that is reflected well in their menu. Despite the disappointing dessert choices, the drinks were outstanding, with two separate menus, one for cold wine and sake and the other for mixed drinks, hot sake, beer, and aged liquors. I didn’t know sake was available both hot and cold and in many flavors. However, Euro Asian’s drink menu contained over 12 cold sake choices including Asian pear ($25 per bottle), raspberry ($25), peach ($25), and mandarin orange ($45). Also, the mixed drinks are unique twists on traditional cocktails. The menu contains nine different varieties of sake-tini which
The two handcrafted wooden and cement dragons on the exterior of the restaurant are just an introduction to this uniquely designed and decorated restaurant. The interior, which seats a maximum of 165 people, is divided into two main dining rooms. To the left is the bar which is also used as a lounge type dining room, perhaps for couples on a date or those looking to watch the game on one of their four plasma televisions. In this room, the lights are set lower, the music is louder, and the bar is only feet away. High back leather chairs are seated around dark wooden tables set with chopsticks placed on ceramic holders used to keep them off the table. The first time my party of four ate at Euro Asian we were seated in this room. We found the music to be too loud and the atmosphere unsuitable for casual diners. However, young couples or singles may find it more attractive. A DJ booth and strobe lighting is set up in this room. According to Goh, once the restaurant receives its entertainment license, it will begin to cater to a late night bar crowd by having DJ entertainment Friday and Saturday evenings after dinner until 2 a.m. The main dining room contains the sushi bar and is split into a bilevel arrangement. Many unique decorations add flavor and color to the room. On the right side, three stairs lead up to an elevated balcony containing four tables positioned on a striped bamboo floor. A trellis with intertwined dried leaf canopies is positioned over three tables on the left side of the room while bamboo sticks covered in cotton are used to separate dark wooden tables from other diners on the raised platform. The ceiling, painted in colorful yellows, blues, and greens, is carved into intricate recessed shapes. Adjacent to the main dining room is what Goh described as a “tatami room.” This traditional Japanese room is used for private parties and can hold 25 people. Here diners must remove their shoes and sit on the floor with their feet in a well under the table. The floor, table and chairs in this room are all carved from bamboo imported from China. This unique room creates an authentic Japanese environment for those looking to host a birthday, office party, or special occasion. In the spring and summer, Euro Asian will be offering outdoor seating along the sidewalk facing the lounge area. The floor to ceiling double doors will open up to connect the outdoor patio to the restaurant and offer diners the ability to enjoy their meal outside. Please turn to page 6R

Dramatically presented Asian fusion at Waterfront’s newest eatery

Dinner for four
On a cold Sunday night in January, our party of four dined at a fairly empty Euro Asian around 7:30 p.m. We were seated on the balcony with a nice view over the main dining room and of the sushi chefs preparing rolls and sashimi. Immediately, our waiter provided each of us with warm hand wipes and a chance to decide on our drink selection. We ordered a bottle of cold Oregon produced Asian Pear Sake ($25) for the table to share. The sake was served in a glass decanter kept cold using a cavity in the side of the carafe which Charlene Wang of Queens serves guests in the main dining room held the ice so as not to dilute at Euro Asian. the sake. The soup of the day was a Carrot Soup ($6) beans and topped with crunchy snow-flake shaped which arrived with a tempura shrimp in the center potato and lotus root chips. Alongside the fish of the bowl accompanied by two halves of cherry were segments of carrot and zucchini lined up like tomato and a sprig of chive. Our waiter poured fence posts along one side of the plate. Despite the the delicate puréed carrot soup over the top of the dramatic presentation, the taste was nothing to call tempura shrimp right at the table. This excellent home about.
