Restaurant review

Keylee’s: Guatemalan specialties in a gorgeous new space By Jananne Abel

After remaining vacant for seven years, the location that had previously been Giorgio’s Ristorante at 11 Pearl St., right across from Rye Town Hall, has finally been filled. And, not surprisingly, with a restaurant featuring Hispanic cuisine.

F

rancisco Estrada transformed the small space that had once been a fine Italian dining establishment into a quaint, beautiful eatery where his wife Alida, 34, cooks Guatemalan specialties. A painter and sheetrocker by trade, Francisco obviously paid attention to every detail as he worked to create a sunny place that in its color scheme reminds me of a yummy Creamsicle. Even if you don’t care for Guatemalan food—and there’s sure to be something on the menu to your liking--just go in for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate to see how beautifully this location has been renovated. The Estradas came to the United States 15 years ago to realize the American dream. They first lived in New Jersey and came to Port Chester five years ago where their son Brian, 12, attends sixth grade at Port Chester Middle School. Before opening the restaurant on Nov. 24, 2007, Alida worked as a housekeeper. “It was my dream since I was in Guatemala [to open a restaurant],” she said. “That was my dream when I came here.” She named the restaurant Keylee’s after her daughter who died at two days old the day the Estradas signed the contract to rent the space for the eating establishment. On my three visits to Keylee’s with my husband, each in the late afternoon or evening, Alida’s niece, Dina Ortega, a senior at Port Chester High School, was our waitress. We found her most gracious and welcoming. She, too, came to Port Chester five years ago. She previously worked at Kiosko Mexican Restaurant in Port Chester. Alida said her specialties are Steak a la Keylee ($18), house style steak with onions, potato salad, refried beans and rice; garnachas ($10), five small fried tortillas

filled with beef and tomatoes; and chiles rellenos ($9), sweet green peppers filled with beef and vegetables. The steak, which I tried because it was billed as a house special, was disappointing. The meat was extraordinarily thin and so well done it was hard to chew. The garnachas, which I sampled as part of the Keylee’s Combination of appetizers, were crunchy and excellent, topped with tomato sauce and a sprinkling of cotija Mexican cheese. The chiles remain to be tried on a future visit.

Dinners for two

Still in its infancy, Keylee’s is constantly changing for the better. For instance, between the first time I visited, before I knew I was going to write a review, and the fourth, three things had been added. The first was chips and salsa, which is now a standard. The salsa is a fairly thin, non-spicy tomato sauce with homemade chips, on the thicker side. So these are a slight variation on the standard Mexican meal-starter. On our third visit, we received a small plate with sliced, marinated, spicy carrots and peppers with our meal. This was a nice touch. These had just the right amount of spiciness and could be eaten plain or as a garnish to other foods. On my fourth visit, when I went to interview the owners, off-white tablecloths with a leaf design had been added to match the curtains. On a cold night, I ordered hot chocolate ($2.50) and found myself savoring its sweetness laced with what tasted like cinnamon. However, I later learned that it was made with Abulita chocolate and no spices were added. Ceviche de camarones ($15) brought a good portion of chopped shrimp, onions, tomatoes and

Keylee’s Combination ($12) consisted of two small fried open face tacos topped with shredded beef, onions, cilantro, tomatoes and cheese; dark brown refried beans; chunky guacamole with tomatoes which was excellent although a tad sweet and two of the garnachas mentioned above (fried tortillas filled with beef and tomatoes) and a tamale (made with cornmeal) filled with chicken, topped with tomato sauce and cotija cheese and wrapped in a corn husk. The tacos, not like any I’ve had before, were tops, refried beans (not my favorite dish) better than most and the tamale was good but filling. All of these items can be ordered separately. The meal ended on a sweet note with a good-sized wedge of dense flan ($4) sprinkled with cinnamon and covered in a thin syrup. A cup of coffee brought our meal for two to $37.25. Wishing to try more dishes, my husband and I visited Keylee’s for a second dinner. Instead of hot chocolate, this time I ordered another hot drink—arroz en leche ($3). I didn’t realize this drink would actually come in a bowl and be more like a soup or even a dessert. Warming and delicious, it consists of cooked rice in sweetened milk topped with cinnamon. Knowing by now that soups in Central and South American restaurants are meals in themselves, my husband went for the sopa de res (beef soup), priced at $9.50. Chock full of meat and vegetables (potatoes, carrots, cabbage, yucca, green pepper, onions, celery and tomatoes) in a savory broth, it was superb, as long as you don’t mind

a few bones. It came with flavorful rice flecked with peas, carrots and corn and a basket of tortillas. Camarones al ajo ($12.50) brought eight medium-sized shrimp in a thickened yellow sauce made with fresh garlic and white wine. While fresh and nicely prepared, I found this dish rather bland. It was served with the same rice and a nice salad of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions with dressing similar to creamy French in a squeeze bottle. Our tab totaled $26.85.

Menu

A white board out front draws attention to the chiles rellenos, pollo saltado and several other items not listed on the combined lunch and dinner menu. Besides the items I sampled, other appetizers on the menu include fried calamari ($9), chicken, cheese or steak quesadillas ($8), nachos with guacamole ($6.50), pupusas (tortillas filled with cheese fried pork skin or with black beans and cheese at $1.50) and enchiladas (fried tortillas and meat with Guatemalan salad of beets, green beans, potatoes and onions for $3). Also on the menu are chicken ($9), tropical ($7.50), mixed ($7.50), tuna ($7.50) and shrimp ($13) salads, three other soups besides beef, and a number of beef, chicken, seafood and pork entrées. Examples of the entrées: hilachas (beef strips with rice at $11), beefsteak Latino (fried meat in a tomato, onion and red pepper sauce served with rice and salad at $11.50), pollo en crema (sour cream sauce chicken with rice and salad at $10), pepian de gallina (hen in brown sauce at $9), pescado frito (fried fish with rice and salad at $12.50), camarones en salsa roja (shrimp in tomato sauce with rice

and salad at $13.50), costilla al horno (baked pork ribs at $9.50) and pulique de cerdo (pork stew with rice at $11). A children’s menu ($5.50) offers mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers with French fries, hamburger and fries or hot dogs and fries. Besides flan, for dessert there’s Guatemalan flan ($4), similar to regular flan but not as sweet, fried plantains ($4.75), sweet corn tamalitos with sour cream and cheese ($5), tricolor ice cream ($6.50), strawberries with whipped cream ($4.50), fruit cocktail ($6) or plantains with cinnamon and homemade honey ($4.75). One native hot drink I haven’t tried is atol de elote (sweet corn cream at $2.50). Cold drinks include fruit juices, horchata (rice juice at $1.50), fruit smoothies ($1.50) and sodas ($1.50). The restaurant does not have a liquor license. A $5 breakfast buffet is available from 6-8 a.m. daily consisting of pancakes, fried plantains, black beans with cream, sausage or bacon, scrambled eggs, fresh Guatemalan cheese, orange juice and coffee. After 8 a.m. breakfast is served and features five types of eggs including huevos rancheros, all served with refried beans, plantains, cream, cheese and tortillas priced at $7.50, pancakes ($4.25), French toast ($4.25) and either pancakes or French toast with eggs and bacon ($7.50).

Decor

Everything is brand new at Keylee’s, including the kitchen. The Estradas spent about $125,000 to turn the space into the lovely restaurant it is today. The dining room, which seats 29, is open and bright and painted a beautiful bright orange accented by shiny white wooden molding on the lower half of the walls. You walk up a ramp to enter Keylee’s and there are white columns and archway openings into the long dining room. Large light wood tables are sometimes covered with off-white tablecloths incorporating a leaf design to match the drapes at the restaurant’s two windows facing the street. Matching chairs have off-white seat cushions. Large offwhite tiles cover the floor. A wide screen TV and a pretty picture of a pier leading into a lake surrounded by mountains (not necessarily of Guatemala, according to the owners) decorate the far wall while a few green plants complete the sunny décor. Ethnic music plays in the background.

Hours, parking etc.

Keylee’s does not accept credit cards. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sunday and from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. Saturday. Parking is usually available in the municipal lot next door and, if not, can be found on the street. Food is also available for takeout or delivery. For an order of $20 or more in Port Chester or Rye Brook, free delivery is provided.
