RESTAURANT REVIEW

Bartaco brings refreshing, airy setting in which to eat & drink into the wee hours B

The attractively-decorated deck looks out on the Byram River.

The airy space that is the new Mexican bar/restaurant called bartaco which opened last month on the Port Chester waterfront. It features tables, booths, a large rectangular bar and hanging basket-weave light fixtures. Cocktails include the Bartaco margarita at $8.50 for a glass or $48 for a pitcher made from scratch using Campo Azul Blanco, Luxardo Triple Sec, agave syrup and fresh squeezed lime juice and served with or without salt. These are tart and potent, just the way I like them. There are also caipirinhas, daiquiris and more. I’ve sampled the Winter Caipirinha (Leblon Cachaca, muddled limes and pomegranate juice at $9) and felt compelled to try the Port Chester Reviver (Bluecoat gin, cucumber, mint, mango nectar and lime juice), a refreshing green drink garnished with a sprig of mint and a slice of cucumber at $9. A separate list of 25+ tequilas go for $8 to $28 per glass. A generous list of red and white wines from around the globe—New Mexico, Chile, Germany, Argentina, France, Oregon, Austria, California, Spain, Italy, Uruguay and Australia— range in price from $24 to $66 a bottle or $7.50 to $12 a glass. These aren’t going over nearly as well as the tequila, cocktails and cervezas. There is also, however, Clarico, like sangria, which consists of fresh cut fruit with liqueur, ice and your choice of wine. It costs $10 plus the cost of the wine for a pitcher. Drinks are ordered orally but, to order your food, you fill out a small menu card with pencils provided marking how many of each you want next to the limited number of menu items. It’s all part of the bartaco aura of fun. You place the provided navy and white plastic card with the bartaco dragonfly logo into a visible clip on your table to alert your server when you’re ready with your order or otherwise need service.

Beach shack décor Ebb Tide, a restaurant and retail seafood establishment, was completely transformed and enlarged to create bartaco, a navy and white concrete block building that looks like nothing from the outside. With room for 140 guests inside, the space includes a private event room that can accommodate 45 people and has its own outdoor patio, not clearly visible this time of year. A large deck on the water is an integral part of the restaurant, or at least will be in the warmer weather. It has seating for up to 120 guests and boasts two fire pits. The so-called minimalistic décor is open and airy, with the feel of a contemporary beach resort. A welldefined blue and white color scheme is accented by wood paneling and furnishings, hanging basket-weave light fixtures in various shapes and sizes, large wood-framed photographs and oscillating ceiling fans. The rustic rectangular wood bar is the centerpiece of the space. It is framed by the dining room with its variety of seating options—wooden booths closest to the bar, wooden tables with white plastic chairs farther out closer to the deck where a now-closed garage door will open in the summertime, and low white tables to which matching benches and stools with navy cushions are pulled up. These are accented by navy and white pillows. The floor is unpainted concrete. You can see into the open prep area and not as clearly into the kitchen. Looking out on the gray wooden deck, you see the same low white wooden tables, benches and stools topped with blue cushions and blue and white pillows, two Please turn to page 7

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Bartaco brings refreshing, airy setting in which to eat & drink into the wee hours fire pits and tall lights with white deflectors that resemble satellite dishes. This inviting scene makes you long for the dog days of summer in the depth of winter. The view across the river in Byram is nothing to write home about right now. It’s largely of a low commercial building marred by graffiti, but in the spring, summer and fall boats will be coming and going on both sides of the river to make for a more inviting spectacle. In one corner of bartaco’s open space is a deejay booth. There is music most nights, either deejay spun or live. Live bands play on Sundays, most recently one at 3 p.m., another at 5 p.m. followed by a deejay. Most afternoons music plays in the background allowing for easy conversation while at night, especially when there’s a deejay, the music is much louder and harder to talk over. “This place is going to be jammed in the summer. I can’t wait for that,” said our waiter on one recent visit. There’s no doubt it’s going to be a whole different scene come summer and you might not be able to get near the place on weekends.

Good mix of flavors In general, the cuisine at bartaco is finger food—the three-bite tacos, small chicken and pork tamales ($3 for a small order, $6 for a large one), gorditas ($3 and $6) and arepas ($3 and $6) taken straight from those street vendors in Mexico. I was told by the staff the Baja fish and red snapper a la plancha tacos were a must. I particularly liked the soft, mild-tasting Baja fish as well as the Thai shrimp varieties. The spicy chorizo was good but not especially spicy, the roast chicken and pork chili verde were both yummy and tasted even better dressed with one of the three house made sauces placed on each table. These come in three colors and three degrees of hotness— from mild to hot. All were flavorful, and even the hottest habanero wasn’t overpowering. Keeping with the minimalistic décor, food is served on rectangular metal trays lined with brown paper. Utensils are wrapped in a white paper napkin and include a knife, fork and delicate wooden chopsticks. On one recent visit, our party of three chose to go with a “large tray” ($25) which allows the chef to make a platter of tacos, guacamole, tamales and sides for you. This was a good way to sample a variety of items. The guacamole was fresh and zingy, crunchy cucumber salad refreshing and the chipotle slaw mild. We tried the recommended churros with chocolate sauce for dessert ($7) and received a good-sized portion, enough for three, of these yummy long, cinnamoncovered Mexican doughnuts. I could have done without the chocolate sauce. During a lunchtime visit, a mixture of tastes and textures provided a satisfying meal for two. Everything came at once, so I started with the spicy beef stew ($5), a small order which brought a mediumsized bowl of beef, onions, carrots and cilantro in a thin, spicy broth. We also ordered a small shrimp ceviche ($7). The shrimp seemed to have been halved and the mixture had the distinct tart but pleasing flavor of lime and cilantro. The half of a spice-rubbed rotisserie chicken ($8) brought a good portion, plenty for two, which was moist and tasty. It came with a side of pickled carrots, onions and jalapenos which provided a good contrast to the more mild taste of the chicken. The small portion of romaine wedge, pepitas and radishes in a creamy lime dressing ($4) consisted of three long leaves of romaine, the smoky-tasting squash seeds, sliced radishes and a delicious dressing. For dessert, chocolate gelato ($3)

brought two large scoops of this dark chocolate icy treat. This meal, which included a Port Chester Reviver described above, came to $35.31. On my three visits to bartaco the waiters have been pleasant and available but not hovering.

Long hours, free parking Bartaco is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. or until the last person leaves, whichever is earlier, and the kitchen is open into the wee hours. It’s great to have another late night eating spot in town. Free parking is available in the marina lot behind The Willett House.

Bartaco is located at the foot of Willett Avenue behind The Willett House where Ebb Tide Seafood used to be.
