Interest in outdoor dining remains high

I

By Jananne Abel

t’s summertime and people have moved outside for everything including eating. And thus we enjoy picnics, barbecues, and dining al fresco at a casual eatery or fine restaurant. Some relish the outdoor eating experience, even when it’s hot, searching out restaurants that provide for it; others wait for the perfect weather to dine outside; while others prefer air conditioning no matter what the weather. The outdoor dining experience has been growing and changing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last several years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling six years ago and then leveling off. The phenomenon has caught on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year. All the restaurants that offered outdoor dining last year are doing so in 2003 and two new restaurants have opened that are taking advantage of outdoor spaces to attract customers. Over the years a handful of eateries have discontinued offering the outdoor dining experience because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco. A good indication that a restaurant takes pride in the food it serves and all aspects of its management is if its open air dining spot is well maintained. Once it starts going downhill, it may be an indication that something is wrong.

Port Chester A new outdoor venue this year was under construction last summer. William Rosenberg of Port Chester and Denis Ossorio of Greenwich opened F.I.S.H., short for Fox Island Seafood House, on Sept. 17, 2002 at the foot of Fox Island Road where other seafood restaurants have existed before. This Mediterranean seafood house with its unique nautical décor features a deck that seats 30 for outdoor eating and has docks in front so customers can reach it by boat during the spring, summer and fall. The deck, which wraps around the back of the restaurant, overlooks the Byram River in a tranquil, beautiful spot with lovely homes across the way and boats pulling in and out. On the ground level, there is also a casual outdoor bar for boat-

ers or anyone else who may choose to imbibe there rather than at the lovely glass-enclosed bar inside the restaurant. Diners eat at the same light wood tables and clear plastic chairs with yellow seats and red metal arms, backs and legs that are used indoors. Tables are shaded by multicolored umbrellas in blue, orange, yellow and green stripes. The largely seafood menu includes appetizers such as cioppino (steamed shrimp, mussels and calamari in an excellent spicy tomato lobster broth), skillet roasted shrimp (to die for!), barbequed octopus, sautéed Maryland crab cakes, spicy Hawaiian tuna tartare, warm seafood salad, oysters and clams on the half shell, and shrimp and lobster cocktail. For entrées, crispy black bass with fresh baby artichokes, tomatoes, mussels and kalamata olives in acqua pazzo;

The deck wrapping around the back of F.I.S.H. at the end of Fox Island Road gives diners a nice view of the Byram River. Wild Salmon Saltimbuco with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, tomato-chive emulsion and grilled asparagus; shrimp and scallop kebobs; and linguine with littleneck clams, cockle clams, toasted garlic, olive oil and Aleppo chile figure among them. There’s also pizza, chicken scarpariello and Tuscan style prime hangar steak for those who may not like seafood. Some of the July specials take advantage of the restaurant’s Italian wood-burning oven in which the pizza is cooked. Among the recent specials were chilled summer squash soup, fresh cured anchovies and wood roasted cabrale stuffed figs for appetizer and grilled wahoo, wood fired whole striped bass, herb marinated swordfish and wild mushroom gnocchi for entrée. Hours at F.I.S.H., where reservations are a must on the week-

ends, are Sunday and Monday from 5-9 pm., Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5:30-11 p.m. Another new outdoor eating locale is behind Locolomo Restaurant at 220 Westchester Ave. Four tables with benches have been set up on a red brick patio around the back of the building which is covered on three sides and open in the back. It is beautifully decorated with six large pots of ivy and flowers between the tables plus rolling pots and trellises planted with pansies and ivy which provide a border from the outside. A three-tiered fountain makes natural music along with the manmade music that is piped outside. Aline Polimeni of Newtown, Conn. opened this restaurant specializing in Argentinian and other South American cuisine on Dec. 21, 2002 in the space where Port Chester Rug and Linoleum had been for 50 years. She and her husband, Dr. Angel Polimeni, an internist, own the building and he has his office upstairs. They hail from Argentina. Many of the dishes here are cooked on the grill—spicy Argentinian sausage, chicken, pork, short ribs, and skirt steak, for instance. There are also breaded beef and chicken dishes, excellent Salmon Locolomo seared on the grill and Camarones Al Ajillo, shrimp in garlic sauce on a bed of rice. Mexican specialties have more recently been added to the menu. Specials on a board just inside the patio a week ago were Paella a la Locolomo and fresh guacamole. For lunch there are homemade soups, sandwiches such as Lomito,

skirt steak cooked on the grill topped with Chimichurri sauce with lettuce and tomato on a wedge, Loco chicken (grilled chicken), and a vegetarian wrap. There’s also a quesadilla with chicken, half of a roasted chicken, barbecue baby back ribs and Locolomo salad served in a tortilla shell with chicken, skirt steak or grilled vegetables. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and brunch Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. where banana pancakes, Heuvos Rancheros, grilled hot cakes, steak and eggs, and Media Luna Special (ham and one egg with muenster cheese and mozzarella) are among the specialties. Hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Since last year Ebb Tide Seafood at 1 Willett Ave. has added a large deck overlooking the Byram River where there’s lots of activity—a marina in front and boats coming and going. Eleven picnic tables shaded by Corona Extra blue and white umbrellas and Coors Light black and white ones are spread out on the lovely gray deck. Window boxes with an interesting mixture of plants and flowers add to the atmosphere. Billed as a seafood deli and fish market, Ebb Tide sells fresh fish and seafood to cook at home or various preparations of seafood for takeout or eating on the premises. Fried shrimp, fish sticks, fish and chips, scallops and calamari; steamed lobsters, shrimp, and clams; and sautéed shrimp, soft shell crabs, scallops, mussels Please turn to page 6R

and clams are on the menu as well as daily specials. You can also get seafood sandwiches such as a crab cake burger, fish filet, clam roll or lobster roll; raw oysters and clams; chowders and lobster bisque as well as side dishes like corn on the cob and coleslaw. A grilled chicken sandwich, hamburger and hotdog are available for land lovers. Some recent specials, available for lunch or dinner, included pan fried sea bass in lemon garlic sauce, sautéed scallops in white wine garlic sauce, grilled wild salmon, and seared tuna with a tamari scallion sauce. Besides food, bait and tackle can be purchased and boats can be rented at this location. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. the other five days of the week. A new outdoor venue that popped up last year is the tiny enclave at the back of Sonora, the nuevo Latino eatery that opened in May 2001 at 179 Rectory St. A deck around the side of the restaurant off Rectory Street is hidden by tall trees and bushes. Unusual rustic flower boxes ring the ledge of the deck where five tables for four are covered with white tablecloths and the black metal chairs that surround them have bamboo seats and backs. In this tranquil setting, reached by entering the front door and walking through the restaurant, you can enjoy Latin food with a French flair. Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain, have been extrapolated at Sonora to include a wide variety of appetizers. Tapas and ceviches, South American seafood cocktails, are among the specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing. There are tapas on the menu from Mexico, Spain, Cuba and several South American countries. Lobster and avocado quesadilla with roasted yellow tomato salsa from Mexico; a Mexican ceviche made with red snapper, shrimp, sweet peppers and citrus served in a coconut shell topped with cumin chips; crisp jumbo shrimp in a coconut served with arugula and red pepper salad in wasabi and coconut sauce from Cuba; and vegetable turnovers from Peru made with roasted eggplant, Nicoise olives, roasted peppers, thyme and goat cheese in smoked guajillo and chimichurri vinaigrette are among the interesting tapas. Entrées include epazote crusted salmon in charred tomatillo and cilantro mojito sauce over a bed of shrimp and spinach served with shitake enchiladas from Mexico; grilled skirt steak served with yucca, oyster mushroom and chorizo hash browns in a saffron garlic mojo sauce from Nicaragua; and grilled vegetable paella with wild mush-

Café Brazil’s outdoor eating area is located in a garden setting at 37-39 North Main St. rooms, eggplant and assorted baby vegetables from Spain. The same attentive service that is offered inside is provided on the deck. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Fine Italian cuisine is featured at Pasquale for lunch and dinner— homemade pastas, chicken, veal and seafood as well as fine wines. The lunch menu also includes a handful of sandwiches. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

Patrons eat on the cozy deck at Sonora, the two-year-old restaurant serving nuevo Latino cuisine at 179 Rectory St. Among the most visible outdoor eating areas in Port Chester is the well-landscaped red brick patio in front of Pasquale II Ristorante across from Cumberland Farms at 2 Putnam Ave. Here customers dine at 10 grayish tables and matching chairs covered with sky blue San Pellegrino sparkling natural mineral water umbrellas. A buffer of shrubs, trees and flowers surrounds the patio and helps create a tranquil setting. Tiny white lights on a white picket fence along the perimeter of the patio also provide ambiance.

The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., is a popular outdoor venue in Port Chester. Surrounded by a white trellis fence, it has the atmosphere of a French café.

The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., is among the more popular outdoor venues in Port Chester. Here 10 white tables and chairs with black and white Brooklyn Brewery and green and white Heineken umbrellas, all surrounded by a white trellis fence, help provide the atmosphere of a French café. Potted flowers, flower boxes and candles on the tables add to the charming atmosphere. While the outside space hasn’t changed much, the interior of Café Mirage has been entirely renovated since last summer. Some of the summer specials being offered by proprietor/chef Dave Haggerty at this international eatery, where the full menu is available until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, are Arugula, Grapefruit, Gorgonzola and Pignoli Nut Salad with Poppy Seed Vinaigrette; Caribbean Conch Fritters with Spicy Dipping Sauce; Thai Ginger Lemongrass Shrimp and the Asian Sampler (a lobster spring roll, tuna dumplings and crispy noodle shrimp); gazpacho, cucumber, carrot ginger, and tomato with avocado relish soups; and Shrimp, Lobster, Scallop and Asparagus Risotto. Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell and traditional shrimp

cocktail are always available from the Oyster Bar. Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight. At 23 North Main St., a lovely little deck extends off the back of the building on the Abendroth Avenue side of Pasta Per Voi for outdoor dining across from the Port Chester Marina. There two square green resin tables with matching green and wood graincolored chairs plus a bench have been set up. The tables for two are covered with green Solé umbrellas. Tiny white lights strung from the awnings add ambience. It’s the perfect atmosphere to enjoy Pasta Per Voi’s fine Italian cuisine. The menu features appetizers, salads, interesting pasta combinations, chicken, veal, seafood and meat dishes. Since last summer a lobster tank has been added and customers can order lobster prepared any style. Some summer specials offered on a recent Saturday night included Arugula Salad with toasted walnuts, sliced pears, crumbled blue cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette dressing; Stuffed Portobello Giordano (mushroom stuffed with sautéed scallions, leeks and crabmeat topped with very thin sliced potatoes), cold seafood salad, Stuffed Rigatoni Arrabiatta (stuffed with sausage, broccoli rabe, ricotta cheese and fresh herbs served in a spicy arrabiatta sauce), Osso Bucco Milanese, Herb Crusted Branzini, a Mediterranean whitefish encrusted with fresh herbs and Japanese bread crumbs, oven roasted in a roasted garlic white wine sauce and served over spinach. For lunch, a number of wedges such as sausage, peppers, sliced potato and onion with broccoli rabe; Italian combo; and chicken parmigiana; and other sandwiches including turkey club; Cuban pork and hot open steak are on the menu in addition to entrees. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Next door at 23 1/2 North Main St., Taos, which features Southwestern cuisine, is offering outdoor dining on a fenced in red brick patio for the second year as its predecessor, Shipwrecked Tavern, did for years before that. It can be

reached through the North Main Street entrance or entered directly from Abendroth Avenue where a sign reading “Taos Bar & Grill” in green lettering on an orange background welcomes customers. Here José Cuervo umbrellas in white, black, orange and yellow and green Dos Equis umbrellas cover black mesh metal tables with forest green plastic chairs. Potted shrubs, not in the best of shape, have been placed around the patio in an attempt to create a garden setting. One wall of this rustic courtyard is painted orange; a colorful orange, yellow and green striped awning hangs over the door leading inside; and red lights in the shape of chili peppers strung on the back trellis fence, only some of them working at this point, provide added ambience to this outdoor haven. Mango wings, nachos, Achiote Shrimp Tostadas, and Chesapeake Crabcakes are among the appetizers on the menu. In addition, salads, fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, shrimp stuffed jalapenos, Coyote Burgers, paella, pan seared salmon, Southwest rubbed chicken, New Mexican baby back ribs, pizza and pastas may be consumed outdoors. Recent specials included chilled carrot soup with ginger, amaretto and chives and Fresh Farm Raised Catfish, cornmeal crusted and white wine roasted. Taos is also known for its margaritas and variety of tequilas. The kitchen is open until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and until 1 a.m. the other nights of the week. Outdoor dining hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lunch, 5 to 11 p.m. for dinner with an abbreviated late night menu after that. With a courtyard out front you must walk through to get to the restaurant, Café Brazil, just down the street at 37-39 North Main St., has a highly visible outdoor dining area within it where patrons can eat Brazilian specialties and consume luscious homemade desserts. Their flan is the best. Four black wrought iron tables for four with forest green plastic chairs covered by green Solé umbrellas provide a tranquil place to eat in this garden setting shaded by trees. A wrought iron rack filled with potted flowering plants has been placed in front of the eating area and other potted plants and small trees have been added to the spacious courtyard this year to enhance the atmosphere. The inside of the restaurant has been renovated and a rotisserie installed on which chicken, beef, pork and homemade sausage are roasted in addition to Café Brazil’s grill on which specialty sandwiches are made, hot buffet, and salad bar. Café Brazil is now open seven days. Breakfast is served from 6 to 11 a.m., lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday and runs until 11 a.m. with lunch and dinner available until 5 p.m. On the other side of town, it’s the fifth season for outdoor eating at Michael’s Fine Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria. In the summer of 1998, owner Michael Iacobelli transformed an overgrown lot behind his restaurant at 125 Midland Ave. into a lovely outdoor eatery seating 48. It features 12 ornate green wrought iron tables and matching chairs on a red brick patio surrounded by a decorative fence fitted with painted panels depicting varied scenes from Please turn to page 9R

Interest in outdoor dining remains high Tuscany. To complete the effect, designed and created by Rye Brook artist Lynda Karanikolas and her crew at Studio 1 of Port Chester, concrete was painted to look like stucco or old tiles. The patio, shaded by overhanging trees and naturally decorated by ivy growing over the walls enclosing it, features candles on the tables and a serving bar. It is available for private parties of all types and, when it is not being used for that, is open to the public for lunch or dinner. Michael’s offers fine Italian cuisine including appetizers, soups, salads, as well as pasta, chicken, veal, beef, pork and fish entrées. The house salad with homemade dressing is exceptional. Several hot sandwiches, including burgers, are also available. And of course the restaurant continues to serve the wonderful thin-crusted pan pizza Michael’s has always been known for. The kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, Fridays from 11 a.m. till 12 midnight and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

with dark green and Corona Light blue and white umbrellas. Potted plants hang on the fence that surrounds this outdoor eating area, a fountain is hidden in the corner and more flowers are planted in containers outside the fence which brighten up the entrance to the restaurant. You can’t top Coyote Flaco’s yummy gazpacho (now offered daily), salmon fajitas or just about any of the Mexican specialties offered here. The cold vegetable soup, Seafood Gumbo, Fajitas Mariachi made with sea bass, salmon and shrimp, Camarones Enchilados (jumbo shrimp topped with mild poblano pepper sauce), Enchiladas Cancun (corn tortillas stuffed with fresh Maine crabmeat), and Fajitas Festival (beef, chicken and shrimp) are among the summer specials. Black bean soup is popular year round. A number of Mexican chicken or beef wraps are now served for lunch. Besides Mexican beer, a whole list of Margueritas and a variety of tequilas are available. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Monday.

Interest in outdoor dining remains high Rye Brook The best kept secret in Rye Brook and Port Chester is still Mulligan’s Bar & Grill at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Anderson Hill Road, which we discovered three years ago. Here 15 wooden tables and chairs and a long bar with wooden stools are covered by a green and white awning behind the golf shop overlooking the ninth hole of the golf course. The fare includes things like fresh fruit plate, chicken quesadillas, shrimp cocktail, Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, grilled Cajun shrimp, salads such as Caesar and chef, sandwiches, wraps, panini (pressed grilled sandwiches), burgers and hot dogs. Vegetarian Delight—a grilled Portobello mushroom with roasted red peppers, fresh basil and melted mozzarella cheese on 9grain bread—is also popular. Daily specials include an iced tea such as raspberry, a frozen yogurt and an alcoholic beverage of the day. A children’s menu is also available. Mulligan’s is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. through October.
