Outdoor venues draw diners Number of local restaurants offering dining al fresco remains constant By Jananne Abel he beauty of summertime is the more laid back at mosphere and spending time outside doing everything including eating. While the weather is warm, it’s pleasant to enjoy picnics, barbecues, and dining al fresco at a casual eatery or fine restaurant. Some relish the outdoor eating experience, even when it’s hot, searching out restaurants that provide for it; others wait for the perfect weather to dine outside; while others prefer air conditioning no matter what the weather. The outdoor dining experience has been growing and changing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last several years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling seven years ago and then leveling off with only subtle additions, deletions and upgrades since then. The phenomenon has caught on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year. For a small community, it’s amazing how many places there actually are where you can eat outside. On a weekend night at the more popular eateries those spaces are definitely in demand. All the restaurants that offered outdoor eating last year are doing so in 2004 except one that closed, and one restaurant has added a deck for dining as a way to please current customers and attract new
T
ones. Over the years a handful of eateries have discontinued offering the outdoor dining experience because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.
Port Chester The newest outdoor eating spot in Port Chester is the large deck behind Pantanal Restaurant at 29 North Main St., which opened on Mothers’s Day. Pantanal serves up Brazilian specialties and has a huge salad bar. The wooden deck seats 60 and features many black metal tables with green chairs shaded by seven Coors Light and Corona Extra umbrellas in navy and one Beck’s beer umbrella in black and white. There are also a few round inlaid stone tables with ice cream chairs. Two murals of Sugar Loaf Mountain in Brazil, one with Rio de Janeiro in the foreground, decorate the back of the Pantanal building to provide atmosphere at this outdoor location along with a working waterfall. The concrete base of the deck is painted blue with waves to resemble the ocean. The murals and faux painting were done by former Rye Brook artist Lynda Karanikolas, who now lives in Yorktown Heights. A sign hanging from the deck advertises that Pantanal serves authentic Brazilian pizza, which owner Richard Cuddy, Jr. described as thin-crusted, made out

Outdoor venues draw diners candles have been pushed into potted plants and are burned to keep the bugs away. Some of the summer specials being offered by proprietor/chef Dave Haggerty at this international eatery, where the full menu is available until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, are pomegranate margaritas; arugula, grapefruit, gorgonzola and pignoli nut salad with poppy seed vinaigrette; asparagus ravioli with lobster, shrimp, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and pesto; Thai ginger lemongrass shrimp, the Asian sampler (a lobster spring roll, tuna dumplings and crispy noodle shrimp); as well as gazpacho, chilled cucumber, carrot ginger, and tomato with avocado relish soups. Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell and traditional shrimp cocktail are always available from the raw bar. The regular menu includes unusual sandwiches; coconut curry shrimp; farm raised ostrich with country potatoes, spinach and ancho sauce; seafood gumbo, barley risotto with shrimp, chicken, chorizo, sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms; and plantain crusted tilapia with mango salsa, black beans and rice, to name a few. Café Mirage is now open for lunch Monday through Friday. Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 12 noon to 12 midnight, Wednesday and Thursday from 12 noon to 1 a.m., Friday from 12 noon to 2 a.m., Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight. A particularly pleasant plein air dining spot is the wraparound deck at F.I.S.H., short for Fox Island Seafood House. The Mediterranean seafood house opened in September 2002 at the foot of Fox Island Road where other seafood restaurants have existed before. William Rosenberg of Port Chester and Denis Ossorio of Greenwich opened this seafood eatery with its unique nautical décor and a deck that seats 30 for outdoor eating. It also has docks in front so customers can reach it by boat during the spring, summer and fall. The deck wraps around the back of the restaurant and overlooks the Byram River in a tranquil, beautiful spot with lovely homes across the way and boats pulling in and out.

Outdoor venues draw diners for sidewalk cafés are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday from May 1 through Oct. 31. Besides paying $25, restaurant owners must provide proof of liability insurance holding the village harmless and a drawing showing the arrangement of tables and barriers they plan to put out. There must be a minimum distance of five feet free of obstructions on the sidewalk for adequate and safe pedestrian movement. The Office of the Village Clerk is authorized to issue an annual permit for the seasonal operation of a sidewalk café after the application has been reviewed and approved by the Building Department and the Department of Public Works. Applications may be picked up at the License Bureau on the second floor of the Rye Town Office Building at 10 Pearl St. A small outdoor eating area has been set up for the seventh year adjacent to the Byram River in front of Sam’s Bar & Grill at 1 Mill St. Two square green tables for two with white resin chairs are unshaded by umbrellas this year. When it gets dark, one of the old-fashioned style street lights on the bridge, located just at the edge of the seating area, casts a subtle glow. Here customers can feast on burgers and steaks, grilled chicken sandwiches, chicken wings, chili and daily dinner specials. Dinner hours are 5 to 10 p.m. seven days a week. T&J Pizza & Pasta at 227 Westchester Ave. has pretty much the same attractive setup for outdoor eating this season as it did the last two years. Two round inlaid stone tables for two with black metal ice cream chairs are offset by three stone planters filled with small evergreens and pink and purple impatiens. T&J’s red and green awning provides protection from the sun. Besides all types of pizza, T&J serves appetizers, pasta, soups, salads, wedges and other Italian meat and seafood dishes, including daily specials. Pasta Craze where you get a choice of several pasta dishes plus a salad for $10.95 is popular on Wednesday nights. The restaurant is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through

During the warm weather customers of The Club Sandwich, which opened in April 2000 at 7 Rye Ridge Plaza, around the back of the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, have the option of eating outside at one of four square wooden tables with ice cream chairs. Two of them are shaded by green umbrellas, the other two by the sandwich shop’s awning. The Club Sandwich offers a tremendous variety of sandwiches of all types, from simple roast beef
on rye to smoked salmon with egg salad horseradish sauce, capers, onions, lettuce, tomato and bacon on a tortilla. The curried chicken salad and brie with scallions, avocado, sprouts and mayo on a croissant is exceptional. The gourmet sandwich shop serves Boar’s Head deli meats on its sandwiches and offers nine different choices of bread on which they can be made. Besides all the usual and not so usual cold cuts, cheeses and salads, 34 finishing touches may be added to create your own sandwich or you can choose from a menu of 50 concoctions which have already been dreamed up. Their spicy Texas chili with or without onions and cheese is also a good bet. At least two different soups are also offered each day. Breakfast sandwiches, muffins, croissants, pastries, crumb cake, bagels, coffees and teas make up the breakfast menu. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Another eating establishment in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, Rye Ridge Delicatessen & Restaurant at 126 South Ridge St., has three round silver tables with four silver mesh chairs each out front where customers may consume their takeout orders if
Recently Lenny’s began offering panini (pressed grilled sandwiches) made on French bread. Frozen strawberry banana and vanilla latte drinks have been added to the offerings this summer. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Greenwich That Little Italian Restaurant, located just across the river in Byram, Conn., has a beautiful outdoor eating area on a red brick patio in a quiet courtyard behind the restaurant, located at 228-230 Mill St. The patio is located just outside the windows of the upper portion of this fine Italian eatery and a mural of Venice, similar to others inside, decorates the wall that provides a backdrop to this outdoor venue. There’s room for four tables for four and another two tables for two in any configuration—square green tables with white plastic chairs covered by sky blue San Pellegrino umbrellas. Besides potted plants, other flowers like red gladiolas and a tall purple variety are planted in beds on two sides of the patio. Other flowers in window boxes hang from the green railing that surrounds this lovely haven. Four pretty lamplights hang from the side of the building to provide light once darkness sets in. In the open air customers may enjoy the restaurant’s excellent array of appetizers, salads, pastas, chicken, veal and seafood dishes

On Friday and Saturday this special 4-course dinner ends at 6:45. It includes a choice among eight appetizers, soup or salad, a choice among seven entrées, dessert and coffee or tea.
