28 local eateries offer outside dining

ven in a suburban, non-tourist community like Rye Town, outdoor eating is a simple pleasure people enjoy when the weather is fine. Whether it’s on their own deck or patio, at a casual eatery or fine restaurant, dining al fresco makes the experience twice as nice—unless it’s close to 100 degrees as it has been this week. From April to October—and especially during the summer months—restaurants that provide outdoor seating are definitely in demand. The outdoor dining experience has been ebbing and flowing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last several years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling nine years ago and then leveling off with only subtle additions, deletions and upgrades since then. The phenomenon has caught on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés through legislation and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year. For a small community, it’s amazing first of all how many restaurants there are—112 in Port Chester and Rye Brook—and of those how many—28—have an area set up where you can eat outside. All the restaurants that offered outdoor eating last year are doing so in 2004 except two, one of which is closed for renovations. Three eateries have added tables outside for the first time this year, one a fine dining establishment on South Regent Street, one a North Main Street deli and one a bakery in the

new Waterfront at Port Chester development. Others in that complex may eventually follow suit. Another restaurant that had a few tables outside in the past but skipped them last year has reintroduced the option this season. Over the years a handful of eateries have discontinued offering the outdoor dining experience because of the difﬁculty of providing enough stafﬁng to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.

Port Chester

The newest outdoor eating spot in Port Chester is Panera Bread in the Waterfront at Port Chester development at 10 Westchester Ave., corner of Waterfront Place, where eight rust and green umbrellas emblazoned with the name of the bakery-café shade gray round metal tables and matching chairs set up on the sidewalk out front, seating a total of 23. Table service is not provided inside nor is it offered here. Customers may simply take their drinks and/or food outside to enjoy the air

Panera, a national chain, is known for its fresh baked bread, bagels and pastries, soups, salads and sandwiches. Beverages to be enjoyed in the summer months include iced tea, iced coffee, home style lemonade, iced caramel lattes or iced chai tea lattes and espresso or green tea and ice blended to frosty smoothness and topped with whipped cream. Summer hours at Panera are Sunday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Also new to the outdoor eating scene this year is Hostaria Mazzei at 25 South Regent St. where two tables draped with off-white cloths and set with china and glassware have been placed on the private sidewalk in front of this fine Italian eating establishment surrounded by clay planters and pots of flowering shrubs, rose bushes and flowers to create a lovely atmosphere. Hostaria Mazzei specializes in seasonal vegetables and fresh fish filleted and baked in the restaurant’s wood-burning oven. However, bran-

zino—white mild Mediterranean sea bass—either sautéed whole and finished off in the oven, grilled or wrapped in aluminum foil and grilled, is the restaurant’s biggest seller. The restaurant makes its own pasta and uses it to prepare distinctive dishes like pasta with choidini (small hook-like mushrooms from Italy) or chestnut tagliatelle (linguine made with chestnut flour) with butter, sage and ricotta cheese . Lamb ragout over pasta and Porterhouse steak for two are also recommended. Although not well promoted, you can also get almost any kind of personal pizza made in the wood-burning oven. The restaurant has a list of more than 200 wines to enjoy as you watch the people drive or walk by on South Regent Street. Hostaria Mazzei is open for lunch Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. and for dinner Monday through Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 10 p.m. The outdoor eating spot behind Tropic Seafood Restaurant & Raw Bar at 23½ North Main St. opened last year and continues to be popular on Friday and Saturday nights. After Taos closed, this location had been vacant for 18 months until Tropica opened to diners last July. The name has since been changed to Tropic. Owner Phil Tremble of Port Chester renovated the previous red brick patio to create a tropical effect which has been modified this season. A new stone wall was built which faces Abendroth Avenue and is topped with window boxes full of flowers. A garden of flowers and tropical plants in front of the wall invites patrons to step inside through a wooden hut and swinging gate. The hut bears the name of the restaurant in 3-dimensional letters. “Aloha” hangs in paper letters below the sign. The restaurant’s menu is posted outside the gate. Inside decorative lights hang on trees planted along the wall and

10 black metal tables set with dark gray plastic chairs are covered by an eclectic mix of umbrellas—green Rolling Rock, navy Coors Light and red and white Campari. In this tropical setting, patrons may enjoy clams on the half shell, Bluepoint oysters and a variety of seafood appetizers, soups and entrées. They can choose from appetizers like teriyaki shrimp, crispy fried calamari, steamers, conch fritters and a lobster quesadilla; entrées like lobster ravioli, seafood Mofongo (plantains smashed and filled with shrimp, scallops, calamari and red pepper, Plato Yucateco (chicken, beef and shrimp sautéed with onions, garlic, tomato and jalapenos) served with rice and vegetable, shrimp scampi, stuffed or steamed lobster, broiled scallops, grilled salmon, Hawaiian mahi mahi or Cajun catfish. Buffalo wings, burgers, chicken breast sandwiches and sirloin steak are among the nonseafood choices. Similar offerings are available for lunch, including filet of fish sandwiches, as well as baskets of scallops, shrimp and chicken fingers. A long list of refreshing summer drinks such as a Lava Flow (strawberry purée swirled through a pina colada), strawberry daiquiri, mojito (fresh muddled limes, sugar, rum and fresh mint), Tropic Punch, a Hawaiian Sunset and Pisco Sour are available to accompany meals. Tropic is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and 5:30 to 10 p.m. for dinner, serving until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 28 local eateries offer outside dining Light umbrellas emblazoned with “Pantanal” in white lettering, blue and white Bud Light umbrellas and red and yellow Brahna umbrellas. Two murals of Sugar Loaf Mountain in Brazil, one with Rio de Janeiro in the foreground, decorate the back of the Pantanal building to provide atmosphere at this outdoor location along with potted palms on the ledge of the deck and other plants on the beige tile ﬂoor, Brazilian music and a working waterfall. The concrete base of the deck is painted blue with waves to resemble the ocean. The murals and faux painting were done by former Rye Brook artist Lynda Karanikolas, who now lives in Yorktown Heights. Pantanal serves authentic Brazilian pizza, which owner Richard Cuddy, Jr. described as thin-crusted, made out of a dough prepared with milk and topped with fresh puréed plum tomatoes and a special cheese from Brazil called catupiri. The latter has the consistency of cream cheese. There are 37 pizza varieties to choose from, including dessert pies like banana and chocolate as well entrée pizzas featuring such toppings as tuna ﬁsh, hearts of palm, onion and mozzarella; shrimp, tomato sauce and catupiri; or hearts of palm, escarole, mozzarella, gorgonzola and peas. Besides pizza, Pantanal offers the traditional Brazilian dish called Rodizio, continuous skewers of homemade sausage, pork, beef and chicken served with rice, beans, fried bananas and French fries accompanied by the tremendous salad bar; Feijoada, a world famous Brazilian meal prepared with black beans, dried beef and pork; as well as chicken, short rib and beef kabobs, a variety of grilled steaks, pork loin and chops, pasta, seafood and chicken dishes. You can also make the salad bar a meal for $19.95. Homemade desserts are another specialty. Pantanal serves its lunch buffet, lunch, dinner and pizza menus from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, the kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with pizza and appetizers served till midnight, and food is served Sunday from 12 to 10 p.m. with pizza and appetizers available till midnight. The restaurant is closed Monday.

Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell and traditional shrimp cocktail are always available from the raw bar. The regular menu includes unusual sandwiches and entrées such as coconut curry shrimp or chicken; farm raised ostrich medallions in an ancho sauce with chipotle mashed potatoes and spinach; barley risotto with shrimp, chicken, chorizo, sundried tomatoes and mushrooms; and plantain crusted tilapia with mango salsa, black beans and rice. Café Mirage is open for lunch Monday through Friday. Hours are Monday through Friday from 12 noon to 12 midnight and Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The restaurant is closed Sunday.

The best kept secret in Rye Brook and Port Chester is still Mulligan’s Bar & Grill at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Anderson Hill Road, which we discovered six years ago. Here 15 wooden tables and chairs and a long bar with wooden stools are covered by a green and white awning behind the golf shop overlooking the ninth hole of the golf course. The fare includes things like fresh fruit plate, chicken quesadillas, Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, grilled Cajun shrimp, salads such as Caesar, chef, Mulligan’s organic, chopped and yellow fin tuna over a bed of seaweed;sandwiches, wraps, beef and turkey burgers, medallions of grilled swordfish and sirloin steak. Vegetarian Delight—a grilled Portobello mushroom with roasted red peppers, fresh basil and melted mozzarella cheese on 9-grain bread—is also popular. Specials feature a different salad, sandwich, entrée and alcoholic beverage every day. Examples of drinks are the mango mai tai and Bahama Mama. A children’s menu is also available. Mulligan’s is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. through October. The Rye Town Hilton at 699 Westchester Ave. offers casual outdoor dining in a garden setting during limited hours at its Terrace Grill. This large area features lots of beige tables, chairs and umbrellas on a patio surrounded by hedges and flower gardens. Additional seating is provided on a slate veranda a few steps above the patio. That Little Italian Restaurant, located just across the river in Byram, Conn., has a beautiful outdoor eating area on a red brick

patio in a quiet courtyard behind the restaurant, located at 228-230 Mill St. The patio is situated just outside the windows of the upper portion of this fine Italian eatery and a mural of Venice, similar to others inside, decorates the wall that provides a backdrop to this outdoor venue. There’s room for eight tables for two in any configuration—square marble-look tables with white plastic chairs. Besides potted plants, including two tall ones with pink flowers at the entrance, sunflowers and a tall yellow and red variety are planted in beds on two sides of the patio. Window boxes full of petunias hang from the green railing that surrounds this lovely haven. Four pretty lamplights hang from the side of the building to provide light once darkness sets in. In the open air customers may enjoy the restaurant’s excellent array of appetizers, salads, pastas, chicken, veal and seafood dishes plus daily specials. Lobster ravioli, Veal Marsala and ricotta gnocchi come highly recommended. For lunch there are also specialty pizzas, calzones and sandwiches, the latter served on the excellent homemade bread That Little Italian Restaurant has been known for since it opened in 1980.
