Outdoor eateries on the rise in Port Chester and Rye Brook
E
By Jananne Abel
ven in a suburban, non-tourist community like Rye Town, outdoor eating is a simple pleasure people enjoy when the weather is fine. Whether it’s on their own deck or patio, at a casual eatery or fine restaurant, dining al fresco makes the experience twice as nice—unless it’s hot and humid. From April to October—and especially during the summer months—restaurants with outdoor seating are definitely in demand. The outdoor dining experience has been ebbing and flowing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last several years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling 11 years ago and then leveling off with only subtle additions, deletions and upgrades since then. The phenomenon has caught on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés through legislation and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/ or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year. For a small community, it’s amazing first of all how many restaurants there are—the number is now up to 120 in Port Chester and Rye Brook with three more opening soon—and how many of those—31—have an area set up where you can eat outside. The latter number is three greater than last year. All the restaurants that offered outdoor eating last year are doing so in 2008 except one—Deli Delight on North Main Street. Three new eateries are offering outdoor dining this year, all of which have opened in spaces where there were restaurants previously—two on North Main Street in Port Chester, the other at Belle Fair in Rye Brook. A fourth, located on South Regent Street, may have put tables outside last year, but they weren’t visible when I was writing up this account. Over the years a handful of eateries have discontinued offering the outdoor dining experience because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.
Port Chester In February 2007, father and son Peter and Marc Tessitore opened Nessa Restaurant at 325 North Main St., across from The Landmark building. At that time Marc said in the future they planned to develop an outdoor eating area next to the building which was realized about a month ago, making it the newest place to dine al fresco in Port Chester and Rye Brook. It was pleasant, breezy and busy even when other such spaces were hot and empty on a recent Sunday evening. Decorative iron gates open onto a narrow, cozy patio of multi-colored bricks where seven or more black metal mesh round and square tables with matching chairs are covered by olive green umbrellas. This small space is beautifully landscaped with trees, bushes and pink and white petunias in a few square beds that break it up and pink and yellow flowers in a bed along a brown wooden fence installed adjacent to the building next door. Large wooden pots with purple petunias and other pink flowers grace the entrance. Here patrons can enjoy this enotecca’s varied bruschetta,
T&J Pizza & Pasta at 227 Westchester Ave. is one of three restaurants with permits to operate sidewalk cafes in downtown Port Chester.
The newest plein air eating spot in town is located adjacent to Nessa Restaurant at 325 North Main St. tramezzini (Italian tea sandwiches) and panini as well as creative appetizers and salads, pasta, chicken and seafood dishes, all made with the freshest ingredients. Nessa is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 11. The restaurant is closed Tuesday. Pantanal Brazilian Restaurant at 29-31 North Main St. was closed for renovations at this time last year, only to reopen in September under new ownership and completely transformed as Churrascaria Copacabana, a Brazilian steakhouse. Seven square marble-look tables and comfortable folding chairs with beige patterned fabric seats are shaded by bright orange Acqua Panna umbrellas on a deck with a brown tile floor at the back of the building. The building’s back wall is painted a bold green and decorated with orange awnings. Delicate blue, pink and purple flowers flow from pots on the ledges of the deck. Customers can order Brazilian appetizers such as mixed barbecue, barbecue pork ribs or fried yucca with Brazilian sausage, Copacabana’s extensive salad bar and drinks on the deck. The price-fixed service of various meats carved from skewers in the rodizio style the restaurant is largely known for is not available outside. Copacabana is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to closing and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. New to our listing this year is Hostaria Mazzei where you can eat in a similar elegant setting outside as you do inside. Two tables draped with off-white cloths set with china and glassware and wooden chairs with blue and
red striped cloth seats have been moved out onto the wide sidewalk in front of the 25 South Regent St. restaurant for those who choose to dine al fresco. They are protected by the restaurant’s large magenta awning. Big pots and planters filled with greenery, bushes and flowers add ambience. With the two owners and chef hailing from three different regions
Seafood House. The Mediterranean seafood house opened in September 2002 at the foot of Fox Island Road where other seafood restaurants have existed before. William Rosenberg of Port Chester and Denis Ossorio of Greenwich opened this seafood eatery with its unique nautical décor and a deck that seats 34 for outdoor eating. Rosenberg and his wife Gina
Customers can experience elegant dining al fresco on the wide sidewalk outside Hostaria Mazzei at 25 South Regent St. of Italy, Hostaria Mazzei prepares authentic Italian cuisine from all of them. Fare ranges from risottos to seafood as well as some hearty meat dishes. Gourmet pizzas and the fish of the day are prepared in the restaurant’s wood-burning oven. Dine at Hostaria Mazzei Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. for lunch and every day from 5 to 11 p.m. for dinner. A particularly pleasant plein air dining spot is the wraparound deck at F.I.S.H., short for Fox Island
took over ownership last January. F.I.S.H. also has docks in front so customers can reach it by boat during the spring, summer and fall. The deck wraps around the back of the restaurant and overlooks the Byram River in a tranquil, beautiful spot with lovely homes across the way and boats pulling in and out. On the ground level, a casual outdoor bar has been set up for boaters or anyone else who may choose to imbibe there rather than at the lovely glass-enclosed bar Please turn to page 4R

Outdoor eateries on the rise in Port Chester and Rye Brook inside the restaurant. Diners eat at white square plastic tables that can be pushed together for larger parties and matching chairs. Tables are shaded by a bright orange awning, complete with fans, that covers much of the deck. The largely seafood menu includes appetizers such as cioppino (steamed shrimp, mussels and calamari in an excellent spicy tomato lobster broth); a Maryland style crab cake with whole grain mustard aioli, celery root slaw and baby greens; crispy Point Judith calamari served hot and spicy or plain with smoked paprika aioli; Gina’s spicy crab and avocado salad; raw oysters and Rhode Island top neck clams, shrimp and lobster cocktail. Zataar crusted Alaskan halibut with falafel, hummus, tomato-cucumber salad and pomegranate molasses; F.I.S.H. paella a la Valencia with shrimp, mussels, clams, chicken, chorizo, sofrito, peas and saffron rice; Billy’s barbequed mahi-mahi with shrimp fried rice, pineapple salsa and baby bok choy and crisped “Loch Duart” Scottish salmon with olive oil roasted asparagus, mashed potatoes and tomato-whole grain mustard vinaigrette figure among the entrées on the summer menu. There’s also wood-fired pizza, “down and dirty” skirt steak, roasted “free bird” organic chicken breast scapariello and the “twonapkin” French onion burger for those who may not like seafood. Some of the entrées and weekly market specials take advantage of the restaurant’s Italian woodburning oven which is also used for pizza. During the summer, F.I.S.H. is open seven days for lunch and dinner. Lunch runs from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. each day, dinner from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Besides lunch, brunch is also served Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Reservations are a must on weekends. Euro Asian in the Waterfront at Port Chester development at 30 Westchester Ave., corner of Waterfront Place, set up an outside eating area exactly a year ago. Twelve square wooden tables with silver metal frames and matching chairs are shaded by exotic green and white striped umbrellas set up on the sidewalk out front, not far from the golden dragons at the entrance, seating a total of 24. Table service is provided on this fairly private stretch of sidewalk. Euro Asian, part of a chain of nine similar restaurants which do not bear the same name, the others all located in Connecticut, serves a combination of Malaysian, Thai, Japanese and European food, including many varieties of sushi. Unique dishes are presented extraordinarily and differently each time to create an element of surprise. Examples are Kani Salad, thin strips of crabmeat and cucumber tossed in an orange spicy mayonnaise sauce served in a bamboo leaf and presented in a doughnut-hole shaped bowl, carrot soup poured over a tempura shrimp and a sprig of chive, Steamed Shrimp or Pork Wasabi Dumplings, and Signature Rolls like the Waterfront. The latter is
made with crunchy salmon tempura topped with fresh salmon, a spicy cream sauce, red caviar and crumbled tempura batter. A set lunch menu offers 17 entrée choices which are served with miso soup, salad, spring roll and white rice for $9. Drinks include many flavors of hot and cold sake and sake-tinis as

It’s the perfect atmosphere to enjoy Per Voi’s fine Italian cuisine. The menu features appetizers, salads, interesting pasta combinations, chicken, veal, seafood and meat dishes. In addition, when available, customers can select a lobster from the restaurant’s tank and have it prepared any style.

Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday for lunch, 4:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 to 11 p.m. for dinner. The restaurant is open from 12:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Euro Asian joins Panera Bread, the first restaurant in the new downtown development to place tables outside. At Panera, located at 10 Westchester Ave., just down the street from Euro Asian at the corner of Traverse Avenue, two rust and green umbrellas emblazoned with the name of the bakery-café shade some of the seven round black mesh metal tables and matching chairs grouped on the wide sidewalk outside, seating a total of 22. Table service is not provided inside nor is it offered here. Customers may simply take their drinks and/or food outside to enjoy the air and watch the passersby. Outside speakers allow customers to hear their name called when their order is ready to be picked up inside. Panera, a national chain, is known for its fresh baked bread, bagels and pastries, soups, salads and sandwiches. Grilled breakfast sandwiches are its newest offering. Beverages to be enjoyed in the summer months include iced tea, iced coffee, lemonade, iced chai tea latte, refreshing mango and low fat strawberry smoothies and espresso and chocolate or espresso and creamy caramel and ice blended to frosty smoothness and topped with whipped cream. Summer hours at Panera are Sunday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. For the sixth season Ebb Tide Seafood’s large deck overlooking the Byram River at 1 Willett Ave. is open for dining. There’s lots of activity at this location with a marina in front and boats coming and going. The gray deck features 11 long redwood picnic tables shaded by green umbrel-
takeout or eating on the premises. The location, which has become more popular with each passing summer, can be reached by car or boat. A sign set up at the corner of Abendroth and Willett avenues advertises new shell lobsters for $6.99/lb. Orders are placed at a counter inside the restaurant and then brought to your table. Fried shrimp, fish sticks, fish and chips, calamari, coconut shrimp, Buffalo shrimp, steamed lobsters, shrimp, and clams; and sautéed shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams are on the menu as well as daily specials such as steamers with garlic parsley butter, grilled organic salmon with Portobello mushrooms and sautéed soft shell crabs with cilantro sauce. You can also get sautéed crab cakes, lobster tails, shrimp with garlic and oil and cilantro pesto sauce, seafood garlic bread, homemade baked clams; seafood sandwiches such as clam rolls, crab dogs, crab burgers and lobster rolls; raw oysters and clams; chowders and lobster bisque as well as side dishes like corn on the cob and coleslaw. A 1 ½ lb. lobster dinner costs $31.95. A few items are available for land lovers. Besides food, bait and tackle can be purchased and boats can be rented at this location. Lunch is served every day from11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. The restaurant is open Monday through Labor Day. At 23 North Main St., a lovely little deck extends off the back of the building on the Abendroth Avenue side of Per Voi for dining al fresco across from the Port Chester Marina. There two square green resin tables with matching green and wood graincolored chairs plus a bench have been set up. The tables for two are covered with dark blue San Pellegrino umbrellas. Tiny white lights strung from the awning, two hanging plants loaded with pink flowers and window boxes filled with pansies on the ledge of the deck as well as a garden below add ambiance.
Some summer specials include apple gazpacho, cold seafood salad; lobster, shrimp and crab cocktail; crab and avocado salad and Clams Per Voi for appetizer; and potato gnocchi, Chicken Almondine, Medallions of Veal Arturo with crabmeat and asparagus in a light brandy sauce and pan seared Cajun sea scallops for entrée. For lunch, 1/2 pound black angus burgers, a number of wedges such as sausage, peppers, sliced potatoes and onions with broccoli rabe; Italian combo; and veal parmigiana are on the menu in addition to salads, individual pizzas and entrées. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Just down the street at 37-39 North Main St., the courtyard at what is now Café Brazil USA got a makeover four years ago when a deck was constructed on a portion of the courtyard you walk through to get to the restaurant. Café Brazil was closed for some months and reopened in May 2006 under the ownership of Brazilian-born Mario Paiva, who lived in Port Chester for 12 years and now resides in Greenwich. As in the past, in this highly visible outdoor dining area patrons can eat Brazilian specialties and consume homemade desserts. A combination of nine black wrought iron and black metal tables with green plastic chairs, five topped by cheerful green and yellow Bavaria umbrellas and two by a navy blue Corona Extra variety, provide a tranquil place to eat in this garden setting shaded by trees. The new owner has created a window display of Brazilian artifacts visible in the courtyard. He has also beautified the space with additional shrubbery. The food and setup are much the same as they were under the previous two owners with typical Brazilian cuisine offered in a self-serve format in two buffets, one for hot food and one for salads. It is priced at $3.99 per pound for the buffet or salad bar, $5.99 per pound for a combination of the two or for the buffet and churrasco (rotisserie meats) and $8.99 per pound for churrasco and the salad bar only. Meat selections include barbecued chicken, pork, sausage or steak cooked on the rotisserie. Café Brazil USA also offers cakes, flan and other desserts. Sandwiches and breakfast foods are also available. Café Brazil is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week including holidays. Further down Main Street near the Greenwich border figures one of the most visible outdoor eating areas in Port Chester, the welllandscaped red brick patio in front Please turn to page 6R

Outdoor eateries on the rise in Port Chester and Rye Brook
Continued from page 4R
The large deck overlooking the Byram River at Ebb Tide Seafood affords plenty of space for customers of the 1 Willett Ave. eatery to consume its seafood specialties. of Pasquale II Ristorante across from Cumberland Farms at 2 Putnam Ave. Here customers dine at six grayish tables and matching chairs covered with an eclectic mix of sky blue and navy San Pellegrino, green Perrier and orange umbrellas. A buffer of beautiful shrubs, trees and flowers in pots and beds surrounds the patio and helps create a tranquil setting. Tiny white lights on a white picket fence along the perimeter of the patio and music piped outside enhance the pleasant atmosphere. Fine Italian cuisine is featured at Pasquale for lunch and dinner— homemade pastas, chicken, veal and seafood as well as fine wines. The lunch menu also includes a handful of sandwiches. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 12 noon to 10 p.m., Friday from 12 noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. Pasquale is closed Monday. The restaurant will be closed for vacation from Aug. 18-25. The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., also near the Greenwich border, is a popular outdoor venue. Seventeen silver metal tables for two with matching silver metal chairs which can be pushed together to accommodate larger parties are shaded by four tan
umbrellas. This lovely spot next to the Byram River is surrounded by a white fence to provide a cozy atmosphere. Overhanging trees, potted flowers, and candles on the tables add to the charming environment. Some of the summer specials being offered by proprietor/chef Dave Haggerty at this international eatery, where the full menu is available until midnight on Friday and Saturday (no longer 2 a.m. which once was the norm), are pomegranate and mango margaritas, passion fruit martinis, and Nick’s mango rum punch; arugula, grapefruit, gorgonzola and pignoli nut salad with poppy seed vinaigrette; Thai ginger lemongrass shrimp; Bangkok mussels steamed in coconut milk and Thai spices; pan fried oysters with Creole hollandaise as well as gazpacho, carrot ginger, and tomato with avocado relish soups. Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell and traditional shrimp cocktail are always available from the raw bar. The regular menu includes unusual sandwiches and entrées such as coconut curry shrimp or chicken; farm raised ostrich medallions in an ancho sauce with chipotle mashed potatoes and spinach; barley risotto with shrimp, chicken, chorizo, sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms; and plantain crusted tilapia with mango salsa,
black beans and rice. Café Mirage is open for lunch Monday through Friday. Hours are Monday through Friday from 12 noon to 12 midnight and Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The restaurant is closed Sunday.
A deck around the side of the restaurant off Rectory Street is hidden by tall trees and bushes. Black ceramic pots with a floral design and wooden planters, both filled with yellow and orange flowers, ring the ledge of the deck—painted a pretty shade of red—where a total of 14 people can dine at various table setups. Tables are covered with white cloths and the black metal chairs that surround them have bamboo seats and backs. In this tranquil setting, reached by entering the front door and walking through the restaurant, you can enjoy Latin food with a French flair. Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain, have been extrapolated at Sonora to include a wide variety of appetizers. Tapas and ceviches--South American seafood cocktails—are among the specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing. There are tapas on the summer menu from Mexico, Argentina, Cuba, Spain, Chile, Puerto Rico, Ecuador and Peru. Lobster and avocado quesadilla with chipotle and crème fraiche aioli from Mexico; empanadas of braised Long Island duck with ginger and cilantro aioli and sirloin steak with guajillo and golden raisin aji
Customers eat at tables and chairs set up outside Rye Ridge Deli in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 126 South Ridge St. For the seventh year customers can eat outside at the tiny enclave at the back of Sonora, the nuevo Latino eatery that opened in May 2001 at 179 Rectory St.

from Cuba; golden beets, raisins, goat cheese and arugula salad with lime coconut vinaigrette from Argentina; and sea scallops, shrimp and yellow tomato mofongo with lobster in a lemongrass sauce from Puerto Rico are among the interesting tapas. Main courses include seafood paella with lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels, sea scallops and chorizo topped with sofrito from Spain; sautéed shrimp and sea scallops in a chipotle, honey, Chardonnay sauce with Monterey Jack and black bean ravioli from Mexico; asparagus ravioli with cilantro pesto, yellow tomatoes, wild mushrooms and artichokes from Argentina; and grilled Chino Latino boneless chicken breast topped with cilantro pesto with fingerling potatoes, chorizo, tomato and zucchini hash from Cuba. A variety of cocktails, margaritas, mojitos, tequilas and international beers are on the menu to go with your meal. The same attentive service that is offered inside is provided on the deck. Lunch is served from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Another outdoor eating locale opened five years ago behind Kiosko Restaurant at 220 Westchester Ave. Seven butcher block booths have been placed outside on a red brick patio around the back of the building off the parking lot. Covered on three sides and open in the back, it is decorated with two large pots of palms. Colorful Mexican ponchos brighten the stucco walls and Latin music plays in the background. Mexican-born Nestor Morales of Queens and Raphael Quintero of Bridgeport, Conn. opened Kiosko, which offers authentic Mexican food, in February 2004. Raphael’s brother Tony has since joined the partnership. Full Mexican and American breakfasts of Huevos Rancheros, Huevos a la Mexicana, Huevos con Chorizo, eggs with home fries, beans, ham or on a roll and omelets can be had here as well as all the Mexican favorites including enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, fajitas, tacos, sopes, tortas, chimichangas, flautas, molotes, chulupas and tostadas. Seafood and meat entrées, salads and homemade soups are also available. Besides wine, beer and soda, you can get a variety of refreshing fruit shakes made to order with a milk or water base. Kiosko’s Cemitas Poblanas, authentic Mexican sandwiches made with a variety of meats, onions, avocado, asiago cheese and chipotle sauce, were recently written up in The New York Times. Kiosko is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Frank’s Restaurant & Pizzeria at 23 Putnam Ave. provided outdoor seating for a number of years, dropped it three years ago following the eatery’s renovation, but then brought it back. Two square black mesh metal tables with matching chairs seating a total of four people sit on the sidewalk under Frank’s magenta awning along with two attractive benches and a gorgeous urn of pink and purple flowers. However, no table service is provided to customers who choose to eat there. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Greenwich That Little Italian Restaurant, located just across the river in Byram, Conn., has a beautiful outdoor eating area on a red brick patio in a quiet courtyard behind the restaurant, located at 228-230 Mill St. The patio is situated just outside the windows of the upper portion of this fine Italian eatery where a mural of Venice, similar to others inside, decorates the wall that provides a backdrop to this outdoor venue. There’s room for eight tables for two in any configuration— square marble-look tables with white plastic chairs. Besides potted plants, sunflowers and a tall purple flower as well as Black-eyed Susans are planted in beds on two sides of the patio. Window boxes full of pink petunias hang from the green railing that surrounds this lovely haven. Four pretty lamplights hang from the side of the building to provide light once darkness sets in. In the open air customers may enjoy the restaurant’s excellent array of appetizers, salads, pastas, chicken, veal and seafood dishes plus daily specials. Lobster ravioli, Veal Marsala and ricotta gnocchi come highly recommended. For lunch there are also specialty pizzas, calzones and sandwiches, the latter served on the excellent homemade bread That Little Italian Restaurant has been known for since it opened in 1980. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch, Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. for dinner. The restaurant is closed Monday.
