New Mexican restaurant opens in downtown Port Chester By Jananne Abel

A

new Mexican restaurant has opened in downtown Port Chester. La Hacienda Bar & Grill at 139 North Main St. replaces the former Radillac, a bar which had lost its liquor license. Puerto Rican born Marisol Navario and Ecuadorian born Jacqueline Palma took over the location over six months ago. They spent five months cleaning the place up and redecorating it before opening on May 3. “It was unbelievable,” said Navario. “It was very ugly.” “We took everything from the basement to the top floor and did everything first class,” she said, commenting that seven truckloads of old furniture, appliances and other debris were removed from the site. Before Radillac, it had for many years been the home of a Chinese restaurant. La Hacienda, a large, deep space, has a beautiful horseshoe-shaped wooden bar with a lighted top decorated with rising suns and flowers. Lanterns in blue and green hang above it. The bar stools have wooden seats with metal backs and legs and match the chairs that surround the small round wooden tables for two which can be pushed together for larger parties. The floor is rust and beige ceramic tile. Navario, 40, has owned Asi es Colombia bakery and restaurant across the street at 174 North Main for seven years. She said she and longtime friend Jackie Palma, 41, were interested in this location because it provides an opportunity to have a restaurant that serves liquor, which Asi es Colombia does not. Also, she said Mexican food is much different than Colombian and a lot of American people like it. Navario is a real entrepreneur, having started in business selling all kinds of wares out of the back of a van. She has known Palma since she first came to this country 23 years ago and Palma’s Uncle Pancho helped her out. Besides Asi es Colombia, she also owns another business downtown—La Casa de

Tarjetas at 145 North Main St. which wires money and sells phone cards. Palma, on the other hand, who came to this country when she was 9 years old, has worked in accounting at Stratmar Systems Inc., located at the corner of North Main and Willett Avenue, for 17 years. La Hacienda advertises “authentic Mexican food” and its menu includes appetizers such as an excellent “Guacamole en Molcajete” ($8.50), a mixture of avocado, tomato, coriander, onion and jalapeno peppers served in a molcajete or pestle made of volcanic rock. Nachos, quesadillas, tostadas and burritos are also listed as appetizers. A tasty chicken soup, black bean soup, taco salad and mixed grill salad (a combination of grilled chicken and beef on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes topped with guacamole and sour cream at $12) are other starters. Entrées include seafood specialties such as Camaron a su Gusto, shrimp prepared either ala Diabla (in a spicy red sauce), En Salsa Verde (in green sauce), or Al Mojo de Ajo (in garlic sauce) at $14, red snapper prepared in various ways ($16), and Caldo Siete Mares (seafood stew with shrimp, white fish, scallops, clams, mussels, calamari and crabmeat at $12.50). Among the meats and steaks are Steak Ranchero (grilled steak with tomatoes, green pepper, onions and tomato sauce at $12.50), Chicken or Steak Milanesas (breaded and fried) served with rice, beans, French fries and salad at $12, Enchiladas (three filled with choice of beef, chicken or cheese at $12), fajitas (steak, chicken, shrimp or a combination of the three) and tacos (various stuffings for $2.50 each). Desserts ($3.50) include flan, postre tres leches, sopapillas, arroz con leche (rice pudding) and cheese cake. I can recommend both the flan and arroz con leche. Last Friday, the day we visited, La Hacienda had just gotten its liquor license and the owners and employees were busy stocking the bar. The

Food will be served at La Hacienda from 4 to 11 p.m. with the bar remaining open until 4 a.m. Corona will be doing a grand opening promotion on Friday, June 13 from

11 p.m. to 1 a.m. with models, prizes and games. In the future, the owners plan to have mariachis who will stroll from table to table singing requested songs.
