RESTAURANT REVIEW
Pizza & Brew serves something for everyone By Jananne Abel
Pizza & Brew has been a staple in the Rye Brook/Port Chester area for the past 18 years. This casual, familyoriented Italian restaurant with its moderate prices, generous portions and diner-size menu has a bustling, friendly atmosphere and good food. What’s especially nice about Pizza & Brew is that on any given night you’re bound to run into someone you know at the restaurant, which is popular with local residents. Located in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 136 South Ridge St., Pizza & Brew is part of a chain of restaurants owned by the Racanelli family. “They started in the Bronx with a deli with the brothers and the father and it developed from there,” said Brian Yozzo of Hastings, manager of the Rye Brook Pizza & Brew for the past 10 years. There are now two other Pizza & Brews in Westchester, one in Greenburgh and one in Scarsdale. The Racanelli family—consisting of brothers Nick, Gino, Marty and Frank—also owns Spiga in Scarsdale, a more upscale Italian restaurant, and Casa Maya, a Mexican eatery next door. Other Pizza & Brews opened in Larchmont and Croton have since closed. Nick Racanelli, who lives in the Bronx, oversees the Rye Brook operation. Yozzo attributes the restaurant’s success to its good food, modest prices and a lot of hard work by the Racanelli family. While business has dropped off a bit over the years, he sees it starting to come back. It’s obvious that besides offering consistent quality, the Racanellis are constantly innovating to keep up with current trends and make sure their customers return regularly. The chef, Jose Cornell, has been with the restaurant since its opening in 1986. The restaurant seats 125 in two dining rooms. It also has a counter with six seats as you enter where customers can sit and eat a meal or enjoy an ice cream sundae or float. Reservations are not accepted. While in the past the back room could be reserved for private parties—I attended some children’s birthday parties there with my older daughter years ago—that’s no longer the case “because of our size and the volume of customers we get,” said Yozzo. “If people have to wait, they’re not going to say, then
they leave and go elsewhere. We don’t like to lose a customer; everybody’s important,” he added. Customers enjoy casual dining at booths on either side of the main dining room and at tables in the middle set with paper placemats. Booths have green benches with brown and green fabric backs. Carpeting is also green. Lighting is provided by beige lamps suspended from chains over each booth. The front of the main dining room is all glass and was designed to let in lots of light during the daytime and create an atrium look. Large plants flourish in this area of the restaurant. Framed 8”x10” pictures of posters from old movies line the walls, and mirrors along one side of the room provide an enlarging effect.
An Italian diner Because of Pizza & Brew’s large menu, “a lot of people joke and call it an Italian diner,” said Yozzo. However, he added, “as big as this menu is, people come in and change it.” And it’s perfectly okay to mix and match the sauces and pastas, for example. On the cover of the menu is a listing of eight specialty salads, all served with a cup of soup to make a meal. These have been added over the course of the past year, starting with one or two at the request of corporate women coming in for lunch looking for light fare, and expanding to the current list. The most popular of those, said Yozzo, is the Zucca Salad, mixed greens topped with grilled chicken, roasted zucchini,, gorgonzola cheese, roasted pine nuts and cranberries ($10.95). “We like to come up with new, exciting combinations,” said Yozzo, noting that his boss, Nick Racanelli, likes to try different salads and see how they will come out.
The main dining room at Pizza & Brew.
Manager Brian Yozzo and wait staff Stephanie Laff of Byram, Conn., Joanne Lando of Beekman, N.Y., Ernesto Torres of Greenwich, Conn. and Esben Bastes of Port Chester stand behind the counter at Pizza & Brew in Rye Brook. Pizza & Brew, of course, is known for its pizza, and there are two varieties—thincrusted brick oven individual 12” pizzas and New York pizza, described on the menu as “soft and chewy.” Both are excellent, the latter having a crust that’s not too thick and doughy which makes it appetizing even to thin-crusted pizza lovers like me. Brick oven pizzas are priced from $7.95 for mozzarella and sauce to $12.95 for Di Parma—topped with imported prosciutto, mozzarella, plum tomatoes and light sauce. New York pizzas come in the individual mini pizza size at $6.95 as well as small, medium and large starting from $10.95 for a small cheese pie (six slices) to $24.95 for a large (10 slices) Fisherman’s Special topped with shrimp, chopped clams, garlic and basil. The Salad Pizza ($15.95 for a small, $17.95 for a large), topped with assorted greens, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, peppers and olives with vinaigrette dressing on the side, is a big seller. The list of pastas covers a full page in small print. All pastas—tortellini, ravioli, gnocchi, penne and fettucine—are available with meat or tomato sauce at $12.95 for one or $21.95 to share. Spaghetti, ziti, linguine or angel hair pasta can also be had with these sauces, meatballs or sausage, broccoli rabe with sundried tomatoes, garlic and oil, broccoli, garlic and oil, white or red clam sauce, grilled vegetables and consommé or pomodoro sauce. Then there are stuffed pastas like lasagna, manicotti and ravioli as well as lobster ravioli, smoked mozzarella and asparagus ravioli, three types of baked ziti and a host of other more unusual pasta dishes made with fettuccine, penne, fusilli, orecchiette, cavatelli, gnocchi and risotto. Yozzo said you can’t go wrong with the Penne Milano ($14.95 for one, $24.95 for a bunch). It is made with grilled chicken, broccoli, zucchini and tomatoes in a light vodka-tomato sauce. He also recommends Fettuccine Carbonara ($12.95 for one, $21.95 for a bunch), pasta topped with a creamy sauce made with mushrooms and bacon. I can add that the Fettucine al Pesto ($11.95), fresh pasta with basil sauce made with olive oil and a touch of cream, looks
watery but is excellent. It is flavored with more than enough Italian black olives and walnuts. The manager stressed the high quality of the meats and seafood the restaurant offers and said they’re able to offer fair prices because of the number of restaurants the family buys for. When it comes to chicken dishes, he raved about the Chicken Primavera ($14.95 for one, $25.95 for a group)—grilled chicken with grilled vegetables in a consommé sauce. “We only use fresh grilled vegetables,” he said, adding that “everyone I’ve recommended it to has truly loved it.” The grilled vegetables and salad pizza are displayed in a case customers pass on their way to be seated. Yozzo also recommended Veal San Martino ($16.95 for one, $29.95 for a group), veal scaloppini topped with eggplant, prosciutto and mozzarella in a fragrant marinara mushroom sauce. He stressed that the restaurant uses the freshest seafood the management can get. Besides flounder, mussels, calamari, salmon, sea scallops, shrimp as well as seafood combinations like Zuppa Di Pesce, for the summer Pizza & Brew is running lobster specials as long as the market prices hold out. You can get a fresh steamed lobster with soup, salad and French fries for $14.95, Stuffed Lobster Italian for $17.95, which Yozzo said for the money you can’t beat, and Lobster Marinara for $15.95. The second is stuffed with sweet crabmeat with scampi sauce topped with mozzarella and served with soup and salad. The third, which is very popular, consists of lobster, clams and mussels over linguine and is also served with soup and salad. For meat lovers, pork chops and steak are also on the menu. All entrées come with choice of soup or salad and pasta with tomato or marinara sauce. Entrées for a bunch are served with family style pasta. These portions serve two or more. Hot and cold sandwiches ($4.95 to $6.95) and a children’s corner ($4.25 to $6.95) round out the menu. And if there aren’t enough choices on Please turn to page 6R

El Parral Restaurant The front of Pizza & Brew, a family-oriented Italian restaurant in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 136 South Ridge St.
Pizza & Brew serves something for everyone Continued from page 3R the menu, every day Pizza & Brew features a list of specials—one appetizer, one salad and about 10 entrées. Yozzo said they run for 2-3 weeks and are all made to order. Every Sunday he evaluates all of them, pulls off what isn’t selling and replaces it. “We try to keep current with what’s popular,” he said. The menu also features a large selection of desserts. To please kids and adults alike, you can get all types of ice cream treats such as sundaes, banana splits, ice cream sodas, milk shakes or just a dish of ice cream. There are 11 flavors to choose from. Besides that, there’s tiramisu—the house special, Italian or New York cheesecake, other chocolate cakes, carrot cake, snickers pie, cannoli filled to order, chocolate mousse, pecan pie, homemade apple pie, peanut butter pie and chocolate covered strawberries. All of the desserts are priced reasonably in the $2.95 to $3.50 range. However, a two-scoop sundae with two toppings is $4.25 while a banana split with three scoops and two toppings is priced at $5.95. Many of the desserts are on display in a case for you to drool over as you enter the restaurant.
Lunch For lunch, the menu is also extensive. Besides all of the pizzas mentioned earlier, you can get calzones with soup or salad for $5.95 to $7.95, pizza rolls with soup or salad for $6.95 to $7.95 or an array of salads for from $3.25 for a garden salad to $8.95 for a Chicken Teriyaki Salad or an Antipasto Salad (fancy greens layered with prosciutto, assorted cheese, tomato, mushrooms, salami, marinated artichokes, roasted peppers and grilled vegetables). You can also choose your pasta and your sauce for from $8.95 for marinara or pomodoro (tomato and basil) sauce to $10.95 for white clam sauce. These include soup or salad. Other Italian pasta favorites are priced from $8.95 to $10.95 and chicken, veal and seafood dishes from $9.75 for Chicken Parmigiana to $11.95 for Shrimp Scampi. These include soup and salad. The chicken and veal entrées are also served with pasta. Among the four chef specials are Baked Stuffed Chicken ($10.95) and Seafood Mediterrano made with seafood sauce, clams, mussels and calamari topped with grilled salmon, shrimp and scallops over angel hair ($15.95). Portion sizes are not smaller at lunch than they are at dinner which means that most likely you’ll be taking some home. If that’s not enough, there’s quiche and soup ($7.95), burgers ($6.95 and $7.45), club sandwiches ($5.95 for grilled cheese to $8.50 for hot open turkey with gravy), other cold and hot sandwiches from $5.95 for meatball parmigiana to $7.50 for chicken salad and grilled panini (Italian sandwiches) at $7.95.
Dinner for three
I ate at Pizza & Brew a few times recently to refresh my memory about the food and service. On my first visit, I started the meal with a Toasted Almond ($5.95), one of the many house specialty drinks. It’s made with Amaretto, Kahlua and milk. Pina coladas, daiquiris in three flavors and margaritas in three flavors are just some of the other specialty drinks. I can also recommend the strawberry margarita, tasty and blended smooth. Pizza & Brew has a small list of wines by the bottle ($13.95 to $29.95), house and vintage wines by the glass ($4.25 to $4.95) or carafe as well as sangria by the mug ($3.95) or pitcher. And of course Pizza & Brew has beer on tap ($2.50 to $2.95 for a mug) as well as domestic and imported bottled beer (3.25 to $3.95). We ordered a Coors Light. With our meal came a basket of focaccia and Italian bread. The Baked Stuffed Shrimp ($15.95), ordered from the list of specials, brought four jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and baked with mozzarella cheese and scampi sauce. It was served with rice and sautéed spinach and came with a salad. The shrimp were extremely tasty but also filling. The cheese added a twist to the more traditional recipe. House salads aren’t anything special, but the house balsamic vinaigrette dressing is excellent. Besides, I always appreciate getting a salad with a meal just to break it up. Other dressing choices are blue cheese, French and Italian. The other two diners opted for special dinner salads, both at $10.95. The Chicken and Shrimp Scampi Salad brought iceberg lettuce tossed with 7-8 grilled shrimp, pieces of grilled chicken, broccoli, zucchini, black olives, roasted red pepper and scampi sauce, a satisfying meal. California Spinach Salad pleased my 11-yearold daughter and provided a second meal to take home. For this mélange, fresh spinach and mixed greens was topped with grilled chicken, roasted tomatoes, black olives, oriental noodles, hard boiled eggs and bacon. A cup of soup came with each salad. Both the chicken noodle and pasta fagioli were obviously homemade and satisfying, the latter consisting of tiny pasta and white beans in a tomato broth. Our check came to $49.78 without tip. On both of our recent visits, the service was adequate without being memorable. For one meal, salad dressing came on the side in a bowl without a spoon with which to dish it out.
Hours and parking Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Since Pizza & Brew is located in a shopping center, parking is never a problem.
