Restaurant review
Chili
spices up most everything at Texas Chili Restaurant By Jananne Abel
N
ew restaurants just keep popping up around town. Among the latest is Texas Chili Restaurant at 8 South Main St. where Sunrise Bakery used to be. As the name implies, chili is their specialty, and it can be served on a variety of foods to spice them up. Or, if you prefer, you can have any of those foods without chili. I doubt if you’d want to eat the chili plain unless you’re really a glutton for punishment. While the menu at Texas Chili is fairly limited, it continues to grow. Co-owner and chef Moises Hernandez of Port Chester said he will expand the menu as customers ask him for different things. For example, last week upon request he made chili con carne, prepared with chunks of beef rather than chopped meat, and he’ll probably make that dish again. Unfortunately, it was all gone when I visited. The Texas style omelet baked with chili and cheese served with home fries and bacon, sausage or ham ($6), he said, is new and something I had just ordered that morning. The chili and cheese are wrapped into what looks like a tortilla made from eggs to create a delicious breakfast food with just the right amount of zing.
Hernandez’s partner is Jessenia Pineda, also of Port Chester. They used to work together at Hubba on North Main Street. He’s the chef in the kitchen while she waits on customers. They opened Texas Chili Restaurant on April 23. Hernandez, 30, hails from Mexico and immigrated to Port Chester 15 years ago. Pineda, 31, left Nicaragua for Port Chester at about the same time. Hernandez has worked in restaurants since he came to the United States, first at the nowdefunct Tucson in Greenwich, then at Hubba for seven years. He was ready to open his own place. He knew the owner of the bakery and that the space was becoming available. “He said if you want it, take it,” said Hernandez. He didn’t have to do a lot of work to the place; he just had to buy the equipment for the kitchen, furniture, build the counter and spread a fresh coat of paint. A red awning out front adorned with a grand opening banner beckons customers to Texas Chili Restaurant. Once inside, the space is bright, airy and clean. You have the choice of eating at one of two pretty wooden tables for four, a table for two or at the counter, all topped with squeezable dispensers for ketchup and mustard.
Texas Chili Restaurant is located at 8 South Main St. in Port Chester.
Owners Moises Hernandez and Jessenia Pineda serve customer Texas Chili Restaurant, which opened in April. The walls in the dining room are sausage or ham (all $6) and bacon, painted dark brown on the bottom, egg and cheese on a roll ($3.25). white on top with a photo mural Breakfast is served from 6 a.m. of a beach with palm trees. The wall behind roll topped with the spicy, dry chili the counter is painted lime green made with chopped meat and no with a dark brown patch created beans ($2.25). A hamburger with specifically for printing the menu chili ($2.75) brought a small burgin lime green marker. It’s the chili that makes tion, Hernandez and Pineda have all of these foods extra tasty. The tacked up on the wall signed dollar three in my party ordered these bills from customers wishing them three delicacies plus we split a luck. Theirs, however, are formed medium order of curly fries with chili, onions and added ketchup into the shape of a cross. Two ceiling fans and an air ($3). You can get a large order for conditioner kept the restaurant $3.50. The fries are crunchy and cool on the brutally hot days this already seasoned before you add week. On another milder day the the chili and onions. For drinks, the choices are door was open, but the fans kept non-carbonated orange drink or the space sufficiently cool. Texas Chili Restaurant is open water flavored with punch from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. dispensers, soda in cans or flaBesides the Texas style omelet, vored vitamin waters in bottles, I’ve tried two eggs over hard coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk with bacon, home fries and toast or orange juice (all $1). Hernandez said he talked to his ($5.50). Other breakfast items include a vegetable and cheese boss at Hubba about his plan to omelet with home fries, bacon, open this restaurant a few weeks sausage or ham, two pancakes or before he left and he wasn’t uptwo pieces of French toast with set. In fact, he wished him luck. two eggs any style and bacon, While the restaurants are similar,
Felix Julian of Port Chester at Hernandez said: “I have a little different.” Besides the items already mentioned, the lunch/dinner menu includes a roasted turkey club ($7) with lettuce, tomato, bacon and chipotle mayo on white or whole wheat toast served with cole slaw or spicy French fries. Or there’s a grilled chicken breast sandwich ($7) with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onions and mayo on white or whole wheat toast with cole slaw or fries. Other selections include a fried breaded chicken breast sandwich ($7) with lettuce, tomato, mayo and spicy fried onions on a wedge with cole slaw or fries and a hot or cold ham and cheese sandwich on a wedge ($8) with cole slaw or fries. Fried chicken wings with fries ($5.50) or with fries, chili and cheese ($6) complete the menu. However, the recipe for the chili is the same. “I think it’s the same,” said Hernandez. “I used to make it down there.” “Business is coming good,” he said. “A lot of people know me from [Hubba]. They saw me and know I am here.” Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Parking is on the street. From my experience, you can usually find a space along South Main within a reasonable walking distance.
