fter 17 years in the business, David Dolores knows what it takes to run a restaurant and make his customers feel at home. That’s why he’s getting such a good reception at Salsa Picante, the first eatery he can call his own and the first of six eating places that were under construction two months ago to have opened in Port Chester. Three others have since come online. “They were dying to have a place like and colorful round plates. this—good food, clean and they say I like Dolores, 40, started as a busboy and when you come over and talk to us,” Doloworked his way up to the front end res said. “I think people appreciate it. RESTAURANT REVIEW

Delicious Mexican fare at tiny Salsa Picante tuce, tomato, avocado and cotija cheese ($9.95), which I haven’t tried as of yet. You’ve got to be extremely hungry for that. Aside from that, it’s not surprising that he suggests everything with sauce including the enchiladas. My daughter had chicken enchiladas which brought two in a lovely green tomatillo sauce ($10.95) with a side of Mexican rice and beans. The biggest sellers are tacos ($2.75 each and there are 11 types), the giant burrito with steak ($9.95 lunch, $11.95 dinner) and the chiles rellenos ($10.95 lunch, $12.95 dinner). At this point Dolores wants customers to try the specials, so when I visited with my husband and daughter last weekend, we sampled both soups of the day ($4.95 small, $8.95 large) and were intrigued by each. The chicken soup had only corn in it but was served with a three-pronged dish containing oregano, chopped onions and chili powder as well as a separate plate with lettuce and radishes to be added to the broth to jazz it up as desired. A hard tostada topped with black beans came on the side. Even more appealing was the spicy beef soup with large pieces of beef rib and hunks of corn on the cob. On another occasion I shared and thoroughly enjoyed a coctel de camarones ($10.95), a generous portion of shrimp, red onions and cilantro in Salsa Picante’s special cocktail sauce which is more sweet than spicy. The ceviche mixto with shrimp and fish ($10.95), on the other hand, didn’t have a lot of flavor. If the one lunch special I had is any indication, I’d say to go for them on a regular basis if the ingredients strike your fancy. The short ribs in adobo sauce made

Dolores called the long wait for a full liquor license “a process,” adding that “we are on the waiting list.” For now you can bring your own beer or wine and will not be charged anything for the privilege.

with guajillo chiles (dried), tomatoes, garlic, onions and spices like bay leaves, oregano, thyme and cinnamon brought two pieces of meat, a small but ample portion, and the sauce was fantastic with just the right amount of zing. It was served with sliced avocado, Mexican rice and black beans made even tastier by the adobo sauce that mixed in with them. Lunch specials come with soup or salad and unlimited soda for $9.95. As is typical of Mexican restaurants, meals start with homemade chips and salsa. This one is thin and once again has just the right amount of spice. The chips are smaller and thicker but no less flavorsome than what I’ve had elsewhere.

Specials Besides the daily lunch special, every day there’s a special of some sort such as Taco Tuesday when it’s all you can eat from a selection of three different types of tacos for $10.95. The record so far is 16 tacos consumed by one person. On Sunday, the brunch special

from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. includes soup or salad, a choice of two main courses of chicken or steak or fish and steak, rice and beans, two choices of dessert and one drink for $14.95. Currently while Salsa Picante is waiting for its liquor license drinks are limited to juices, aguas frescas or sodas but later will include a glass of wine or a mimosa.

Drinks are nonalcoholic for now Nine different refreshing juice drinks (strawberry, mango, melon and pineapple among them) made with frozen fruit pulp from a Colombian company blended with water ($3) or milk ($4) are on the menu as well as aguas frescas such as Horchata (Mexican style rice water) or hibiscus tea, sodas and unsweetened ice tea, all $3. I’ve had the strawberry drink with water and blackberry with milk, actually preferring the former. Once Salsa Picante receives its liquor license, special drinks such as mojitos, margaritas, micheladas and sangria will be also served.

Five homemade desserts are on the menu, and I’ve had two of them—Grandma’s yummy bread pudding ($4.95) made with pecans, drenched in brandy sauce and served with vanilla ice cream and dollops of whipped cream, and the light flan de coco (coconut custard) at $4.95. Other choices: tres leches sponge cake ($5.95), churros stuffed with cajeta and cream ($6.95, fried ice cream ($5.95) and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and served with whipped cream ($3.95).

Striking black and orange decor The décor at Salsa Picante is striking in its bright colors and simple beauty. Wainscoting is painted blackish-brown on the bottom of the walls, the top of the far one is decorated in faux stone with three arches created using a black outline. The inside of the arches is painted deep orange like the rest of the walls in the small eatery, which seats 22. Bright-colored ceramic suns and moons, which Dolores said came from his home and were gifts from his siblings in Mexico, as well as a framed repujado en metal work made by his brother, hang in the arches. Brightcolored Talavera plates from his hometown of Puebla hang over the kitchen prep area. Talavera tiles also form the centerpiece of the shiny black, orange, yellow and blue tabletops Dolores and

Continued from page 4 his friend crafted. Chairs are of medium-colored wood with black seats. The back wall of the restaurant is covered by a large TV; a smaller one hangs in an opposite corner. The floor tile resembles wood as does the attractive drop ceiling which is broken up into individual squares. Sheer white curtains are pulled to the center in the large front windows with large green vases set between them.

Hours and parking Hours are 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Takeout is available, but there is no delivery or catering as of yet. Those will come later when the proper staffing is in place. Metered parking is available on the street or in the municipal lot across the street. You can also walk to the marina parking lot on Abendroth Avenue if you want to park for free.

Getting things right Dolores is intent on getting things right with his new restaurant and has already made some changes. He realized the air conditioner wasn’t distributing air evenly throughout the space and therefore told his partners to move it, which they did pronto, working through the night to get it done. He’s also listening to customers. Feedback he has received let him know that the menu is difficult to read, so on the next printing he will change the typeface to remedy that problem. “If you see a problem, fix it” is his mantra. “At the end it is good for the restaurant and for the people.” He’s also using his people skills to help business. “I like to go out to eat also,” Dolores said. “I know when someone treats you well, you will come back. I want people to come here and have fun and feel comfortable. There will be a time when everybody is going to be a family to us. You call people by name, you know what they like. I know eventually it’s going to be like that.” He’s also having fun. “When you do something you like to do, you don’t see it as a job,” Dolores said, adding that “my goal is to create a name and a reputation. After that everything else comes.” If this restaurant is successful, it’s possible he may open another, but for now, he said, “They say everything starts with one. This one is going to be my baby.” Although he loves what he does, David feels his wife, a middle and high school Spanish teacher in Ardsley, and kids are suffering, especially after they got used to his being home every night with his previous job. David, 7, is in first grade at King Street School while Julian, 4, is in preschool at Corpus ChristiHoly Rosary School. Partner Fabio Gomez, who is in the electrical and plumbing business, wants to learn more about being a restaurateur so he can take over one day a week to give Dolores a break. So far he’s been working two months straight without a day off.
