RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Pub at Doral Arrowwood: Good American food, fun setting By Jananne Abel
hose who live at Doral Greens are no doubt regular customers at The Pub at Doral Arrow wood Resort and Conference Center in Rye Brook. However, other Rye Brook and Port Chester residents may not yet have discovered it. A spacious sports bar and restaurant with all types of entertainment, The Pub is a fun place to eat for people of all ages. It’s one of the three indoor restaurants at Doral Arrowwood and the most casual of the three, having been around since Citibank opened the conference center in 1986.
T
If you’re looking to eat some good old American food in a pleasant, casual, sometimes bustling atmosphere, The Pub just might be the place. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights there’s a deejay and the music can be loud if you sit too close to it, but we’ve never had a problem getting a table far enough away that a normal conversation isn’t possible. After all, The Pub seats 110 and has a large standup area for dancing and mingling, bringing its total capacity to 289. There’s a large screen TV on one wall in the middle of the dining room which is usually broadcasting the hottest sports event of the day at low volume. If that’s your cup of tea, you might want to pick a table close to it. In the coming weeks basketball will be on the screen. A digital readout on another wall welcomes the current convention group and gives the latest sports scores. There’s also an arrangement of three couches with another large TV in front of it where you can enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres as well as the light of a fireplace. Across from that is the dance floor and deejay. My kids love to eat at The Pub because there are two pool tables and two dart boards a few steps up from the dining room where you can play pool or darts at no charge. In the same vicinity, a number of video games, as well as bowling and foosball, which do require quarters, are another attraction. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres can also be enjoyed in this location where a few tables and another large screen TV are situated. While there’s a good-sized horseshoe bar at The Pub and a few tall round tables without chairs just for drinking, there are also two long, comfortable booths and tables spread widely around the dining room. The large room features a wood floor, walls with light paneling and brick accents, light wood tables and chairs, a framed poster of a large golf ball as well as smaller ones of dogs, people rowing, playing croquet and football.
Tables are set with dark green napkins and no cloths. Five tables with beige cloths are set up outside the door of The Pub on a carpeted floor if you prefer a more formal, quieter setting. Lighting in the dining room is generally dim, and the service is good. The Pub can be reached from the lobby of the resort and conference center, located at 975 Anderson Hill Rd., by going straight through the lobby, taking a left, going down a flight of stairs past the indoor pool and then arriving at the doorway. A large blackboard outside the door lists the daily lunch, dinner, soup, drink, wine and beer specials. While the food is excellent at The Pub, the sports bar is also known for its wide array of mixed drinks, selection of more than 100 beers, 13-14 wines by the glass and more than 300 wines by the bottle. Different categories of drinks are featured each month. For instance, a standup menu on the table lists the various specialty martinis available during the month of March in the $8.50 range. The Key Lime Martini, made with Absolut vanilla, simple syrup, lime juice and a splash of pineapple juice, tastes just like key lime pie.
A portion of the dining room at The Pub at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Rye Brook.
Dinner for four I’ve eaten at The Pub many times. On a recent visit our family party went with the Beer Sampler, a fun way of tasting four different beers on tap—Brooklyn, Killian, Sierra and Pilsner—for $5.75, a Roy Rogers—made with Pepsi and grenadine ($2.25), a Bloody Mary ($5.75) and an iced tea ($2.50) for drinks. The Pub’s version of French Onion Soup ($4), served in a large cup with two handles, is perfect. The portion isn’t too large, it’s not too salty, the broth isn’t too dark, it’s poured over crunchy, toasted French bread and it’s topped with just the right amount of melted Swiss cheese. Delicious! The soup, along with the appetizing and good-sized Gorgonzola and Beefsteak Tomato Salad ($7.75), was enough to please our teenager. This luscious salad consists of crumbled gorgonzola
Martin DeRose, new manager at The Pub, and Dave Smith, director of restaurants at Doral Arrowwood, point to the blackboard outside the sports bar and restaurant listing its daily specials, famous people born that day and monthly horoscope information.
cheese over sliced beefsteak tomatoes on a bed of greens with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The tasty Grilled Chicken Quesadilla appetizer ($6.75) is enough for a meal. A flour tortilla is filled with grilled chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, tomatoes and jalapenos, cut in quarters and served with pico de gallo salsa. The Chicken Fingers ($4.25) off the children’s menu are served with wide fries and barbecue sauce and always satisfy our 10-yearold. However, since she will soon be too old for the children’s menu (ages 10 and under), we’ll have to pay more for the chicken finger appetizer ($6.50) which doesn’t include fries. Usually opting for burgers, appetizers, or salads at The Pub, on this visit I selected the 10ounce Sirloin Steak ($17.95), which was perfectly grilled medium rare at my request and served over fresh zucchini, broccoli and carrots with a baked potato and a few yummy onion rings. Tender with little fat, the steak provided a healthy portion (enough for lunch the next day) and was definitely worth recommending. Service was fine until two of our party members went off to play pool. I later had to chase down our waiter to get the check. However, I usually have no complaints about the wait staff and on a subsequent visit our group received excellent service from Victor Zanabria of Port Chester, who has been a waiter at The Pub for three years. Our check came to $60.94 without tip.
Menu and recommendations What’s great about The Pub’s menu, which is the same for lunch
and dinner, is that it provides a number of choices that don’t require you to eat a lot or spend a fortune. The bulk of the items are appetizers, salads, wraps, burgers, club and panini sandwiches. There are only four entrées plus a daily special. Some recent specials: filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes, steak wrapped in goat cheese and ribs. Over time I think we’ve tried most if not all the entrées—Penne a la Vodka ($11.95), Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon with honey Dijon mustard and dill served with rice pilaf and sautéed spinach ($16.50), the sirloin steak and Honey Glazed Barbeque Baby Back Ribs ($17.95)—and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. The 10-ounce burger ($8.25), always a good bet, comes with a choice of Swiss, American, cheddar or jalapeno cheese, country bacon, mushrooms or sautéed onions on a Kaiser roll. I think I’ve also asked for and gotten the burger with gorgonzola cheese. Unless you choose otherwise, burgers are also served with lettuce, tomatoes, raw onion, a pickle and French fries or vegetables. A Garden Burger ($7.50) and a Turkey Burger ($7.75) are other menu options. Of the panini sandwiches, served on grilled European flat bread, I can recommend the roast beef version ($9.25) which includes oven roasted beef, muenster cheese, caramelized onions with horseradish dressing. Cut in quarters and served with a pickle and potato chips, it provides a filling meal. Buffalo chicken as well as ham and turkey panini sandwiches are also available. I can vouch for the freshness Please turn to page 6R

One of two pool tables at The Pub where patrons can play pool for free.
The Pub at Doral Arrowwood: Good American food, fun setting Continued from page 3R and authenticity of the Traditional Caesar Salad ($6.75) which can be served with grilled chicken ($8.75) or, my favorite, grilled jumbo shrimp ($11.75). Besides the Gorgonzola and Beefsteak Tomato mentioned above, Baby Spinach Salad ($7.50), Grilled Portobello and Asparagus Salad ($7.50), Chef Salad ($7.50) and House Salad ($5.50) round out the salad selections. Buffalo Wings ($6.50 for 12, $9.50 for 24, $12.50 for 36), a traditional bar food, are very popular at The Pub. They’re spicy, meaty and are served with a wonderful blue cheese dipping sauce in addition to celery and carrot sticks. I’ve never had a wrap, but they come in four varieties: vegetable, honey glazed turkey, tuna salad and Roma chicken and range from $7.75 to $8.25. The dessert menu features Apple Pie a la Mode, New York Style Cheesecake, Jumbo Brownie a la Mode, Vanilla Ice Cream and Dessert of the Day (ask your server), all priced from $4.25 to $4.50. Besides chicken fingers, the children’s menu lists Penne Pasta with Marinara Sauce, Macaroni and Cheese, Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Hamburger or Cheeseburger with French Fries, all priced reasonably from $3.25 to $4.25. The Pub is a fun place for kids, but no one under 18 is allowed in the facility after 10:30 p.m. “It’s an adult environment and you can’t drink until you’re 21,” explained Arrowwood’s Food and Beverage Manager Paul McCarthy, who has been at the facility for 17 years, eight of them as chef at The Pub. “We try to get the locals in Thursday through Saturday,” said McCarthy. “Otherwise it’s for the
hotel guests.” A big annual Super Bowl party is open to the public. The public won’t be turned away during the week, but Wednesday night is not recommended because 100 to 300 members of a conference group eat at The Pub each Wednesday, and there’s no room for anyone else. Each restaurant at Doral Arrowwood, including The Pub, has a separate kitchen and chef, with James Gambardella of Brewster in the role of executive chef for the facility. Brett August is head chef at The Pub. “All of the food is made from scratch,” emphasized McCarthy.
Hours, deejay, pool, parking The Pub is open for lunch and dinner Friday through Sunday, opening at 11:30 a.m. and staying open until 1:30 a.m. the next morning Friday and Saturday and until 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. From Monday through Thursday The Pub opens at 3:00 p.m. and stays open until 12:30 a.m. Closing time extends to 1:30 a.m. Thursdays. Food is available until midnight every day of the week. A happy hour with free hors d’oeuvres takes place Monday through Friday from 5-7 p.m. Breaded shrimp, pizza, fried calamari and a taco bar are examples of the free hors d’oeuvres. A deejay plays tunes from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. Thursday and from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. To get the equipment to play pool or darts, you must give the bartender a credit card or your room key. Parking at Arrowwood is either self-parking off to your right as you traverse the entrance driveway (follow the signs) or valet parking from in front of the resort and conference center.
