RESTAURANT REVIEW
Q is for barbeque in the heart of Port Chester By Jananne Abel
hose who frequent The Kneaded Bread at the corner of North Main and Mill streets in Port Chester knew that owners Jennifer and Jeffrey Kohn planned to open another eatery on North Main Street and kept asking when opening day would roll around. On Feb. 1, the Kohns were ready. That’s when they opened the doors at Q, an Authentic Barbeque Restaurant & Bar, at 112 North Main St., the former location of Grill FX, Tamarind and El Dorado.
T
Having rented the space in August, the Kohns’ took their time about opening. Jeff was practicing recipes in their smoker at home while renovations were taking place downtown. They’ve opened slowly without a lot of fanfare or advertising until they get the kinks out and the operation running smoothly. Customers expect the same sophistication and attention to detail at the Kohns’ new restaurant they have come to count on at the bakery. “Seven years ago we opened the bakery,” said Jennifer. “We wanted to do something else. We love Port Chester, and Jeff has been a big fan of barbecue.” He worked for a barbeque restaurant in New York City where he was the opening chef about 10 years ago, said Jennifer. “We thought it would be a great concept.” They also have a friend who owns Virgil’s, a barbeque restaurant in the City. In addition, since the Kohns now have two children, Joey, 2 ½, and Jack, 10 months, they wanted a place that would be kid friendly. There aren’t enough places around to take kids, they agreed. And “it had to be someplace nearby because we are control freaks,” said Jennifer. In fact, they had moved from the Landmark building in Port Chester to a home in Stamford but found it to be too far away from their business and just moved back to the area, buying a house in Rye Brook, where Jeff grew up, instead. For the restaurant, they wanted to stay in Port Chester and waited for a spot to open up. “It’s such a good-looking space,” said Jeff, who was also pleased that the kitchen hoods were already in place and the kitchen just needed some equipment changes and cleaning. Q is somewhat of a self-serve operation where you place your order at a counter inside the door, take a number, find a table, and then runners bring your order to your table on a tray. Jennifer said they went this route because they didn’t want to have to deal with waiters, waitresses and personalities. As they had traveled in Europe picking up ideas and recipes before opening The Kneaded Bread, the Kohns visited Kansas City,
Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri and Texas in August, hitting 15 barbecue places in five days to see how they ran and to build credibility. They went to one place in Austin, Texas with no waiters and waitresses—the concept they had in mind—and saw that it worked. Q General Manager Jason Magnell brings customers their trays of food.
