Bruschetta, panini and more in cozy surroundings at Nessa
T
By Jananne Abel
here’s nothing more exciting than a new restaurant in town, particularly when it’s different from any of the others. Nessa, although listed as Italian, is unlike any other eatery in that category. It is, in fact, what co-owner Marc Tessitore calls an enotecca or Italian sandwich shop which revolves around light carbohydrates. As such, the menu is distinctive. On top of that, the décor is warm, quaint and candlelit and the staff makes you feel at home. Located at 325 North Main St., Marc grew up in the nightclub to get it just right. where Sandy’s Old Homestead bar and business and worked for 10 years at For instance, the whole branzini restaurant was a fixture for 35 years, his family’s place called The Riddler has been replaced with basa filet, a catering to a gay and lesbian crowd, in the Bronx. Bruschetta, panini and more in cozy surroundings at Nessa any longer. I hope it returns as it was unusual and particularly tasty. The salad consisted of a baked apple smothered in warm goat cheese on one side of a rectangular plate and arugula with a balsamic dressing on the other. The Nessa salad ($8)—very fresh--consisted of field greens, cucumber, marinated sweet red and yellow tomatoes, shaved almonds and picked herbs with a balsamic dressing. The pumpkin gnocchi had excellent flavor and I thought was a great buy for $13. That, however, has been replaced by the potato gnocchi with oxtail ragu mentioned above, but is expected to return in the fall. Tessitore said the gnocchi was hand rolled, which accounts for its lightness. It was filled with a cinnamon, sage and pumpkin purée and cooked in a buttery sauce with pumpkin seeds. Aside from a delicate curry gnocchi I experienced at a restaurant in Little Italy, this was the best I’ve ever tasted. My partner ordered the grilled eggplant panino (singular of panini), made with grilled eggplant, goat cheese, balsamic onions and cherry peppers. It had a lovely crunch and a spicy flavor. This sandwich was so much better than most of the panini I’ve had of late, only to compare to one experienced a few years back in a New York City sandwich shop. For dessert, I selected a rich Italian chocolate red wine crema with fresh whipped cream and crumbled biscotti on top ($6). It is made with red wine reduced and mixed with bittersweet chocolate. Tessitore said this is a dessert you either love or hate. I did enjoy this chocolate decadence but found it too rich to finish. Our tab for two totaled $61.21 without tip. Service was fine on this Monday visit, and certainly friendly and apologetic on the following Friday, but there was a problem in the kitchen which resulted in no food—not even bruschetta—for maybe 45 minutes. That’s when I missed the bread. Wine without food goes straight to your head. Tessitore explained later that it was the worst night since the restaurant opened because a lineman in the kitchen didn’t show up. That’s when the owner needs to be able to step into the kitchen and lend a hand.

Desserts and other recommendations
Besides the rich chocolate crema mentioned above, desserts include fresh ricotta drizzled with Tuscan honey and garnished with shaved biscotti crumbs, panino (bread buttered and pressed) with Nutella (hazelnut spread with a chocolate taste) and bananas, and pecan pie served warm with fresh whipped cream, all $6. The pie, which I tried on my second visit, was a disappointment. While otherwise a sweet treat, it wasn’t heated and the small dollops of whipped cream on top were on the hard side. Also on my second visit, the roasted beet salad ($12), made with frisée greens, candied walnuts, gorgonzola cheese and chunks of beets with a horseradish dressing provided a wonderful mix of flavors and textures. Chicken “cooked under a brick” ($23) was also outstanding. The chef literally uses a brick for cooking the chicken to hold in the moisture. Underneath the chicken, served with a Diablo sauce, were heavenly puréed potatoes and spinach. This dish was flavorful and a bit crunchy but not spicy as the sauce might indicate.
Hours, parking and more
Nessa is open for dinner Sunday and Monday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. It is closed Tuesday. When the liquor license shows up, the bar will stay open till 2 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Parking is on the street. With its central location across from The Landmark and just down the street from the police station and courthouse, Nessa has gotten business up to this point strictly by word of mouth or just curiosity, and co-owner Marc Tessitore was pleased that business doubled from the first weekend to the next. He’s a firm believer that the more restaurants there are the merrier and so is thrilled by the number of eating establishments in Port Chester. I’m happy to welcome the Tessitores and their new concept in Italian eateries to Port Chester. Although there are a few bugs to work out, I was sufficiently impressed with the food and décor to return for more.
