Restaurant review

Sosa’s Pizzeria: Good food, small space T

By Jananne Abel

hey’re not Italian, but brothers Angel and Enemias Sosa know how to cook Italian cuisine after having worked in Italian restaurants for more than a decade. Less than two months ago they came to Port Chester to open their own place, a neighborhood restaurant called Sosa’s Pizzeria at 47 Irving Ave., corner of Pearl. Although the awning doesn’t yet reflect the change of ownership, signs in the windows do. The Sosas, who hail from Guatemala, opened their pizzeria Feb. 1, having bought the former Railroad Pizza, a short-lived venture, from Peter Postiglione. Peter and his family were responsible for converting the former Postiglione Pharmacy into a pizzeria. Enemias said the lettering on the red awning will be changed soon to reflect the new name. The Sosas are both friendly and professional. They make a good thin-crusted pizza as well as numerous other Italian specialties. Portions are large and prices are reasonable. Angel, 37, and Enemias, 40, both worked in the kitchen at Casarina Restaurant in Thornwood for 10 years. Then Angel moved on to a pizzeria in Silver Lake and Enemias to a pizzeria in Hawthorne to get experience in that environment, which they said is very different. The brothers, who immigrated to the United States 20 years ago, both live in Dobbs Ferry. “We’ve been trying to get into the business from 2003 till now,” said Enemias. “But it’s hard. What we really want is a small restaurant and pizzeria together, but we’ve got to start somewhere.” While there are three small tables at Sosa’s and the atmosphere is pleasant enough, the majority of the food is taken out. The pizzeria offers free delivery for a minimum order of $10. A customer who works nearby at Polytemp and was eating in at Sosa’s this week praised the

new establishment, saying the broccoli and eggplant pizzas are “almost like a work of art.” He also recommended the salmon pizza, one of two specialty pies advertised on a chalk board inside the front door. Bruschetta pizza, which sounds yummy, is the other pie highlighted on the chalk board. It’s made with fresh tomatoes, red onions, balsamic vinegar and basil. Enemias cited wraps ($6.75), chicken parmesan pizza, chili pizza, jalapeno pizza (all $3 a slice), chicken francese ($12.95) and the veal house special—veal medallions layered with eggplant, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella topped with marsala wine and mushroom sauce ($13.95) as specialties. “We know how to cook Italian style,” said Enemias. “We’ve been doing this for years. We just need a little more time to get organized.” Ideally he’d like to add filet mignon and other fancier dishes to the menu as well as homemade empanadas, for instance, but said they have to build up their clientele first. Rib eye steak ($18.95) served with vegetable or potato and house salad is currently offered. Besides the restaurant’s extensive Italian menu, Sosa’s will also be dishing up a Spanish buffet with rice and beans and dishes like oxtail and barbecued spare ribs for $5.50 per small container, $7.50 per large one. The brothers make their own Italian bread and wedges as well

Brothers Enemias (left) and Angel Sosa have assumed ownership of the neighborhood pizzeria at the corner of Irving Avenue and Pearl Street. as Guatemalan sweet bread. There are many spelling and other mistakes on the menu, which disappoints them. “We wanted the menu redone,” said Enemias.

Recommendations To get a flavor of Sosa’s Pizzeria, my husband and I ordered several dishes over the course of a week. The linguine with red clam sauce ($9.95) brought a large portion chock full of tomatoes and chopped clams topped with three whole clams in the shell. This delicious pasta dish provided dinner for two and lunch the next day. Along with the pasta we enjoyed a small gorgonzola salad of leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, shaved carrots, sliced black olives, cucumbers and chunks of cheese (bigger than they should be) mixed with house dressing of olive oil and

balsamic vinegar ($6), which was plenty for two. The large version costs $7. On another occasion for lunch we sampled a meatball hero ($5) on homemade bread filled with meatballs made with just the right seasoning—not at all bland—covered with tomato sauce. Combined with a small Caesar salad ($6), it afforded lunch for two. The salad consisted of fresh romaine with a decent Caesar dressing and homemade garlic croutons. A meatball calzone ($4.50) was large and messy, filled with tasty meatballs and lots of ricotta as well as mozzarella cheese. Our mistake was not asking for and therefore not getting any tomato sauce on the side. Meat lasagna ($8)—made with layered chopped meat, lasagna noodles, tomato sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese—was enough for three. Although not the best I’ve ever had, it was certainly satisfying. I was intrigued by the shrimp hero ($6.25) on the menu. It features lightly breaded fried shrimp without the tails on a homemade wedge roll. I opted for a regular sized roll instead ($5.50) and shrimp dressed with lettuce, oil and vinegar. It was a tasty, crunchy treat for a shrimp lover. My husband found chicken cutlet with chili ($6.50 including $1 extra for the chili) on a wedge dry and needing tomato sauce. Next time he’ll order it that way. The chili isn’t greasy nor overly spicy.

Menu The awning does not yet reflect the restaurant’s new name—Sosa’s Pizzeria.

It would take weeks to plow through everything on the complete Italian menu—much more than you would expect at a piz-

zeria. There’s everything from appetizers, to pasta dishes, to cold and hot heroes and wraps, to calzones and rolls, to chicken, seafood and veal entrées, the latter three served with house salad and appropriate side dish. And then, of course, Sosa’s sells pizza—by the slice ($2-$3), personal size ($5 plus $1 per topping), large pies ($12 plus $2.50 per topping) or small pies ($11 plus $2.50 per topping). If you’re really hungry, you might like to try the combo pizza ($16 small, $17 large), which has six toppings—sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

Décor, hours, parking Sosa’s Pizzeria is tiny and has little floor space—just enough room for three small square wood grain Formica tables pulled up to a bench seat covered in red, blue and yellow print fabric opposed by three wooden chairs with black seats. Another matching bench provides space for two to wait for takeout orders. In front of you as you walk in a white granite counter is almost completely covered with glass shelves held in place by shiny silver posts so you can barely see who’s behind the counter. There’s a small space on the far left to place your order and on the far right for the cash register. Behind the counter stands the pizza oven. To the left is a small kitchen framed in beige brick with an archway opening. White and gray ceramic tile covers the floor. Sosa’s is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parking is on the street or in the commuter parking lot on Broad Street after 6 p.m.
