ON THE WAY Café:
Anything but ordinary
I
BY JANANNE ABEL
t’s been nearly a year since Joseph Mortelliti of Port Chester and his uncle, George Degenhardt of Greenwich, opened On the Way Café in Rye. They turned what had once been an ordinary luncheonette into a classy one, opening for business in May 2010. Mortelliti, 35, who is the chef, went all the way through the Port Chester schools before attending and graduating from the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. He worked as a chef at Aurora in Rye and three restaurants in Manhattan before getting laid off in the “big economic bubble burst.” He was out of a job almost a year. Mortelliti was back working at Felidia in Manhattan when On the Way Café at 34 Ridgeland Terrace became available. His uncle, who loves to cook, negotiated the lease and a partnership was born. Degenhardt has a day job as an “IT guy,” said Mortelliti. When he works at the restaurant on weekends, he waits tables and mans the front end, leaving the cooking to his nephew. “I let him help prep,” said Mortelliti. Degenhardt’s wife Grace also helps out as needed. Because of his background cooking in upscale restaurants, Mortelliti wanted to bring higher end cuisine to what had traditionally been a breakfast and lunch place. So he put plated dishes like Chicken Milanese ($13) and Beef Carpaccio ($15) on the lunch menu and Brioche French Toast with whipped cream ($9) and Parmesan & Chive Organic Scrambled Eggs with crispy pancetta, home fries and toast ($11) on the breakfast menu along with soups, sandwiches, salads, fried eggs and bacon. On the Way Café is therefore pricier than you might expect for a luncheonette, but the food and preparation are top quality, the service is top notch and friendly and the
atmosphere is bright and cheery, even on a gray day. Because it’s not inexpensive, I was a little taken aback to find that On the Way only accepts cash—no credit cards—but there is an ATM machine on the premises so you don’t get caught short.
Quaint décor Mortelliti and Degenhardt kept the name that had been attached to this small eatery for 15 years. It was closed for about seven months before they breathed new life into it. In keeping with their goal of creating a more high class dining experience, they installed a bamboo wood floor, white marble tile counter, ripped out the bar stools in favor of tall wooden chairs with black seats at the counter, gave the walls and ceiling a fresh coat of cream-colored paint and painted the wainscoting dark brown for a “more sophisticated type feel,” said Mortelliti. Recessed lights in the ceiling and hanging lamps over the counter provide just the right amount of lighting. Cute curtains at the windows at each end of the restaurant are rust-colored and dotted with contrasting gold lion heads. Paintings by two Rye artists currently hang on the walls and are for sale. Some depict local scenes like the boardwalk at Playland or the duck pond at Rye Town Park. Potted primroses sit on each table which is covered with a white tablecloth topped with brown paper. The café seats 40 at a combination of tables scattered throughout the space and the long counter. On the Way Café is easy to miss as it’s tucked behind a Sunoco station just as you make the turn from Playland Parkway onto Forest Avenue coming from Port Chester. It’s diagonally across from the entrance to Playland and down the street from Rye Town Park. Although the address is Ridgeland Terrace, the
Chef and co-owner Joseph Mortelliti of Port Chester chops chives in the kitchen at On the Way Café in Rye. side of the restaurant facing the street actually appears to be the back of the eatery. There is lot parking on both sides of the building.
The bright, cheery space that is On the Way Café. The paintings of two local artists are displayed on the walls.
Limited menu In addition to printed menus, a large blackboard behind the counter spells out the daily offerings at On the Way Café while smaller ones on each table list the beverages. The menu will change seasonally and in fact a new spring menu is just around the corner. For now the breakfast menu includes three flavors of pancakes—country style ($8), banana walnut ($8.50) and blueberry ($9), all served with whipped cream, as well as a short stack for kids ($4.50). In addition, you can get the brioche French toast mentioned earlier, steel cut oatmeal in plain ($4.50, $5 with berries), apple cinnamon ($5) and maple brown sugar ($5) varieties; a yogurt granola parfait with seasonal fresh berries ($5); two eggs any style with toast and home fries ($6); or the Breakfast Corner ($8) where you choose your style of eggs, meat (sausage, bacon or ham) and vegetables (onions, mushrooms, peppers or tomatoes). The latter is served with toast (white, wheat or rye) and home fries. You can get just egg whites for $2 more. Please turn to page 6

RESTAURANT REVIEW
ON THE WAY Café: Anything but ordinary On the Way Café uses Feather Ridge Farm organic eggs that are available from the Rye farmers’ market and Coach Farm goat cheese that comes from the Rhinebeck area. I can attest to the tastiness and lightness of the banana walnut pancakes. You get two thick pancakes which you might expect to be heavy but are incredibly light and delicious— with slices of banana and walnuts evident. You don’t even need syrup or powdered sugar. Just a pat of butter will do. If you do want syrup, they even have the no-sugar variety. Chef specials include an Organic Egg White Frittata ($11) made with sautéed mushrooms, onions and tomato with melted herb goat cheese served with choice of toast. The frittata is also available all day Sunday for breakfast and lunch. My husband ordered this special for a change of pace when we visited some time ago and found it satisfying and surprisingly light. We shared another chef special, the Organic Spicy Southwestern Scrambled Eggs with sautéed mushrooms, onions and tomato ($12) last weekend which I found incredible. It’s a lovely combination sprinkled with chopped chives and cayenne pepper to give it a zing and is beautifully presented. This special is also served with
home fries and toast. English muffins are also available if you prefer, or at least they were last weekend.
ham and goat cheese. This, too, comes with home fries and toast. On my next trip to On the Way I’m going to try the
On the Way Café is located at 34 Ridgeland Terrace, behind a Sunoco gas station at the corner of Playland Parkway and Forest Avenue, diagonally across from the entrance to Playland. The Organic Three-egg Omelet with choice of 3 fillings ($9.50, additional $.50 for additional items) can be had for breakfast every day and also for lunch (brunch) on Sunday. I guess organic eggs are yellower than the ones I buy in the grocery store because the omelet, not as large as I feared, had a beautiful yellow appearance. It was perfectly cooked and included my choice of mushrooms, bacon and cheddar. Other options are tomatoes, asparagus, peppers,
Parmesan and Chive Organic Scrambled Eggs with crispy pancetta, home fries and toast ($11). Or I might go for Tuscan Sunny Side Up Eggs ($10) on grilled Tuscan bread with thinly sliced Black Forest ham and home fries. “I try to pair things up that normally wouldn’t go together,” said Mortelliti. “You try to get a little creative with breakfast, but it’s hard.” The home fries are unlike any I’ve ever had before. In fact, they’re far better.

Mortelliti said they’re just made with potatoes and spices like paprika, onion powder and garlic powder. However, he said, the potatoes are almost overcooked liked mashed potatoes with some chunks and then are continually cut as they’re cooked. “I think it’s better than the traditional square blocks.” I agree. Sides of bacon, sausage or ham cost $2. A side of bacon produced three thin strips. Toast costs $1.50, home fries $2.25 and house made muffins and scones $3. There’s also fruit cup for $4. Beverages include juices: orange, cranberry and apple ($2 and $3); Acqua Panna and Pellegrino ($3 and $6), Poland Spring ($1), chocolate milk ($2 and $3), white milk ($2), cappuccino ($3.75) and espresso ($3.50). Breakfast for two (banana walnut pancakes, Southwestern scrambled eggs, coffee and hot chocolate) cost $28.72 or $33 with tip. For lunch, there’s a soup of the day ($3 cup, $6 bowl), salads (mixed greens with cherry tomatoes, red onions and candied walnuts with balsamic vinaigrette at $10; grilled chicken at $12 and farro served with tomato, fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinaigrette and crustini at $12), a Sandwich Board consisting of open face grilled cheese with tomato, bacon and fries ($8.50), sour dough and gruyere grilled cheese with fries ($11), turkey club and fries ($9.50), Philly cheese steak wedge with choice of Cheese Whiz, American cheese or mozzarella and fries ($10) and hot pastrami on rye with fries ($10). I had the hot pastrami on a recent visit which brought half a pound of thinly sliced hot pastrami on rye toast topped with a delicate mustard. It was yummy and filling. In addition, you can get an 8-ounce burger and fries with lettuce and tomato for $10, 50 cents more to add cheese or bacon; a grilled chicken wrap (grilled chicken, mixed greens, grilled onions and chive aioli at $11), a grilled vegetable wrap made with seasonal vegetables, sun-dried tomato pesto and chive aioli ($12) or a BLT wrap
($10). These are not ordinary wraps. The ingredients are wrapped in pizza dough. “Every morning I do a pizza dough with chicken or a spring mix with balsamic vinegar,” said Mortelliti. I haven’t tried one of these wraps myself, but my husband and daughter had only good things to say about them. Lunch plates include the Chicken Milanese (Panko breaded chicken breast with spring mix salad, cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella) and Beef Carpaccio (thinly sliced filet mignon, mixed greens, shaved grano padano parmesan cheese, truffle oil and fleur de sel) mentioned earlier. I can strongly recommend the crab salad ($15) which includes a generous portion of crabmeat, jalapeno, red peppers and celery served on Boston lettuce with crostini. They’re not on the menu now, but other dishes Mortelliti is looking to offer include tuna with radicchio, skirt steak with fingerling potatoes and salmon tartare. On the Way Café is child friendly and I’ve seen many kids there during my three recent visits. A children’s menu includes chicken fingers and fries ($5.50) served in a white lop-sided, open-faced bowl that kids get a kick out of, grilled cheese and fries ($5.25) and butter pasta ($4.50). Daily dessert specials appear on the blackboard. A recent example was Junior’s original cheesecake. A separate blackboard above the counter advertises made to order crumb cakes ($25 for a half sheet, $35 for a full sheet).
Reception, hours So far Mortelliti is happy with the positive reception his food and café have received. “It’s not like we took over a business with a base clientele,” he said. “We had to start all over again.” On the Way Café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed Monday. Breakfast is served until 11:30 every day except Sunday when it ends at 11:45. Lunch begins immediately thereafter.
Ray’s Café to close Win Ridge Realty has announced that Ray’s Café at Rye Ridge South Shopping Center will be closing by the end of April. After much consideration, the owners of Ray’s have decided to retire and close the restaurant by then. They have been in business since March of 2000. The Rye Ridge Shopping Center, South and Plaza is located at Ridge Street and Bowman Avenue in Rye Brook. It is home to Chipotle, D’Agostino, Starbuck’s and more than 40 specialty retailers, eateries, services and professional offices. Opening this April will be Coco Day Spa, a posh nail and day spa, Indigo Chic, a contemporary women’s fashion store and Buddha, which will feature Asian fusion cuisine, sushi bar and hibachi. Later this summer, Chop’t Creative Salad Co. will be opening in their first suburban location.
