RESTAURANT REVIEW

More than 200 dining spots signed up for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Three are in Port Chester

H

BY JANANNE ABEL

udson Valley Restaurant Week begins Sunday and lasts for 14 days. To get ready for those two weeks, more than 200 restaurants in seven counties in the region have prepared special menus to feature the bounty of the Valley; heirloom fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, wines, fish, fowl, meat and even maple syrup. Of the 200 restaurants that have chosen to participate, 109 are situated in Westchester and three in Port Chester: Il Sogno Ristorante, Sonora and Tarry Lodge. During the two-week culinary event, participating dining establishments, among the finest in the region, will offer three-course prix-fixe dinners for $29.95 and three-course lunches for $20.95. It’s your chance to try a restaurant or two you might not otherwise feel you can afford or to venture beyond your local environs for culinary delights. Although Hudson Valley Restaurant Week extends over two weekends, a good number of the eateries are excluding at least Saturdays from the promotion and many are not offering the special menu on either Fridays or Saturdays. Now in its sixth year, this event demonstrates why the Hudson Valley has become one of America’s most talked

about culinary destinations, says Janet Crawshaw, Hudson Valley Restaurant Week organizer and publisher of The Valley Table magazine. The Hudson Valley comprises Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster and Columbia counties. “Six years ago we started with 70 restaurants,” Crawshaw said. “To now list 200 speaks volumes about this region. There are so many great culinary choices here in the Hudson Valley. We hope diners will use Restaurant Week to try as many of them as they can.” Because agriculture is still the Hudson Valley’s biggest industry, the use of locallyproduced ingredients on Restaurant Week menus is key to the event’s popularity. In fact, the farm-to-table movement— a long tradition among Hudson Valley chefs—is becoming a national culinary trend, according to the National Restaurant Association, which recently named locally-sourced ingredients as the hottest restaurant food trend in 2012. Last year’s event drew more than 200,000 diners, and for good reason, stresses Crawshaw. “The Hudson Valley food scene is truly vibrant. The Valley is home to the Culinary Institute of America, the country’s foremost cook-

Sonora at 179 Rectory St. is one of three Port Chester restaurants where you can get a threecourse prix-fixe lunch for $20.95 or dinner for $29.95 during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, which runs from Mar. 18-31. ing school, and the Glynwood Center, a nationally recognized center for sustainable agriculture. Plus, we have many celebrated artisanal cheese makers, world-class wineries and distilleries and some of the top chefs in America.”

Port Chester restaurants Sonora, listed on the Restaurant Week website as serving “modern Latin American” cuisine, has been taking part in the culinary event since its inception.

Il Sogno Ristorante at 316 Boston Post Rd. in Port Chester is also participating in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week.

“We did it the first year because it was only very exclusive, high-end restaurants,” said Omar Chuchuca, one of the managers at Sonora. “They included us in it.” Now, he said, “we just want to keep on the tradition.” It’s not free for eateries to jump on the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week bandwagon. There is an $800 fee to register. “It covers advertisements, magazines and flyers and on top we have to give them a gift certificate for $60,” Chuchuca said. The latter is to be used for prizes being given away to Restaurant Week customers. Celebrated co-owner and executive chef Ralph Palomino has described the food at Sonora, located at 179 Rectory St., as “upscale Latin with a French flair.” The 11-year-old dining establishment is attractively decorated in earth tones with sculptured walls featuring replicas of Nazca lines, a series of ancient geoglyphs—shallow designs of birds, lizards and monkeys found in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. Sonora’s Restaurant Week menu includes four appetizers from four different Latin countries such as Salmon al Crudo (Chilean salmon tartare with Pommery mustard, waffle chips and avocado topped with chive crème fraiche) from Chile or Berenjena al Horno (roasted eggplant with wild mushrooms, cilantro, roasted peppers and goat cheese drizzled with

Romesco sauce) from Peru. The five platos principales, or main courses, come from four different countries. Examples are Costillas de Res (slowly braised beef short ribs served with shitake mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables cooked in Rioja wine au jus) from Spain and Puerco al Sarten (pan seared pork tenderloin served over quinoa salad with shiitake, sweet plantain, diced mango and arugula finished with parsley chimichurri sauce) from Cuba. For dessert, there’s Colombian flourless cake, Sonora’s famous dulce de leche cheesecake or assorted sorbets. Menus for Restaurant Week may change based on availability of ingredients. “If we get some fish special,” for instance, “we usually modify the menu,” said Chuchuca. “We will put it on the website if we change the menu.” Sonora’s Restaurant Week menu is posted on the www.sonorarestaurant.net website. The prix-fixe menu priced at $29.95 for dinner and $20.95 for lunch will not be offered on Saturdays, but it will be available every other day of the week from Mar. 1831. Sonora is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 12-3 p.m. and every day for dinner from 4-10 p.m. Parking is in their lot or on the street and valet parking is available when that parking isn’t sufficient. RESTAURANT REVIEW

More than 200 dining spots signed up for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week

Continued from page 4

Tarry Lodge, the pizzeria-trattoria co-owned by well-known Manhattan restaurateurs Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, Andy Nusser (exeutive chef) and Nancy Selzer (managing partner), is taking part in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week for the first time this year. “We have been a little slow on the uptake as we’ve been open for three years now and this is the first time we are participating,” said Selzer. “We realized that Hudson Valley Restaurant Week’s mission and our own are essentially the same: feature the highest quality ingredients found as close to home as possible. We hope to be on the Hudson Valley restaurant landscape for a very long time (Tarry Lodge has been a restaurant in some form since 1906, after all!) and want to establish ourselves as such, not just a transplanted New York City restaurant.” “It is also a great opportunity to cook with and serve the many incredible quality ingredients coming out of the Hudson Valley,” said Sam Epps, chef de cuisine at Tarry Lodge. After a million-dollar renovation of an old, fire-damaged building at 18 Mill St., Tarry Lodge reopened in October 2008 with the same name the restaurant had previously held for 60 years. Its clean, simple

Tarry Lodge at 18 Mill St. will also offer a special promotional menu using ingredients produced in the Hudson Valley, except on Fridays and Saturdays, from Mar. 18-31. elegance employs lots of tile, wood and marble. The food at Tarry Lodge is traditional Italian although anything but ordinary. Nusser said his goal is to “make dining here as interesting as possible.” For Restaurant Week, the prix-fixe menu, not offered Fridays or Saturdays, features three antipasti, three secondi (entrées) and three dolci (desserts). You can start with either Coach Farm fettunta with grilled ramps and aceto Manodori (grilled filone, a crusty bread with a soft center,

rubbed with garlic, topped with Coach Farm goat cheese, finished with grilled spring onions and seasoned with a little vinegar and olive oil), seared Hudson Valley foie gras with pears and vin Santo (an Italian dessert wine) or crespelle (Italian crepes) with yellow foot mushrooms and pea shoots. For the main course, choose from tagliatelle with Hudson Valley primavera, rainbow trout with spring onions and sweet carrot passato (carrot purée passed through cheesecloth to make it smooth and flavorful with almost a brothlike consistency), or Hudson

Valley game hen soaked in a brown sugar and sea salt brine and grilled al mattone (under a brick so it’s moist on the inside and crispy on the outside) with favette (fava beans in a rustic preparation) and preserved lemon for flavor contrast and color. Dessert choices will be Migliorelli Farms apple tart, Crown Maple syrup cheesecake or mixed berries with vanilla zabaglione. With the cheesecake, Tarry Lodge is meeting the Crown Maple Chef’s Challenge of creating a recipe for a cocktail, appetizer, main course or dessert using Crown Maple syrup as a key ingredient. A panel of peers will judge the recipes and diners will be able to vote for their favorite dishes as well. One winner will be chosen in each of the four categories. Tarry Lodge is open for lunch Monday through Friday, for brunch from 12-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and daily for dinner. Hours are 12-9 p.m. Monday, 12-10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 12-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3-11 p.m. for dinner Saturday and 3-9 p.m. for dinner Sunday. Parking is available in their strip lot on Mill Street adjacent to Sam’s or on the street. There is valet parking on the weekends. The owners of Tarry Lodge are also looking to tear down a building on Abendroth Avenue to create a 44-space parking lot, the application for which is currently before the Planning Commission.

At the last minute Il Sogno Ristorante, which opened in November 2008, joined the list of Restaurant Week participating establishments. “A friend of mine told me about it,” said executive chef/ co-owner Jimmy Resulbegu, a charming fellow who is always out and about in the dining room talking to customers and getting their input. “Then I called right away and got in.” He said Il Sogno did not do Restaurant Week last year but did take part the year before. “The first year was ok,” Resulbegu said. “I think it’s getting better and better.” His friend told him that last year was 100% better than the year before. Serving up creative Italian/ Mediterranean cuisine in elegant beige and brown surroundings with a dream theme, Il Sogno, which means “the dream,” is located at 316 Boston Post Rd. Just coming up with his Restaurant Week menu before we went to press, Resulbegu rattled off six appetizers including Goat Cheese Milanese, eggplant lasagna and grilled baby calamari. Among the eight entrées he’s featuring are Cappellini Tartuffo (truffle pasta), Rigatoni alla Ragu (veal and beef) and Chicken Sorpresa (parmesan crusted chicken breast with white wine and lemon). For dessert, patrons have a choice of cold zabaglione with strawberries, ricotta cheesecake, gelato or sorbet. The entire menu should be on their website at ilsognony. com by now. Like Tarry Lodge, Il Sogno is not offering the promotional menu on Fridays or Saturdays. Lunch is served daily from 12-3 p.m., dinner from 5-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 5-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On-site parking is available. Besides these three restaurants in Port Chester, a handful of eateries in both Rye and White Plains are taking part, a few in Mamaroneck and Larchmont and others scattered in communities throughout Westchester and beyond. For a full list of the 200+ participating restaurants and to make reservations online for any of them, go to www.hudsonvalleyrestaurantweek.com. Many of the pricefixed menus, including Tarry Lodge’s, are also posted there.
