A dozen places to get dumplings, they come in many varieties, and there is a big price range
A
By Jananne Abel
fter having such fun with our quest for the spiciest and least spicy chili in town back in January, this month my husband and I, this time joined by our reporter, Claire Racine, set out to find the best Asian dumplings in Port Chester and Rye Brook. We’ve been at it for about three weeks now and once again have thoroughly enjoyed the experience but, just like with the chili, we are now “dumplinged out.” It was a chance to eat at a large sampling of the various Chinese, Japanese and Asian fusion eateries in town without doing a full review of each. We figured that dumplings were relatively popular, something each of these restaurants would carry and a dish we could easily compare. As it turned out, comparing dumplings wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Some
restaurants have several varieties. For ease of comparison, we decided to stick with pork dumplings at each to begin with and then branch out from there. At Buddha, for instance, we tried six different types and still didn’t cover them all. We started with three, the waiter came back to take our dinner order and we ordered three more kinds of dumplings. He then came back and asked what we wanted for dinner. At that point we couldn’t eat another thing—except fried ice cream to top off our dumplingly delightful meal. There are eight Chinese restaurants, three Asian and one Japanese eatery in Port Chester and Rye Brook. Of that dozen, we ordered dumplings from eight, either to eat in or take out. Comparing pork dumplings at each, here’s what we concluded.

Best value You get the most for your money at Ho Sai Gai (937-8337) in the strip shopping center at 544 Willett Ave., corner of Putnam, where 10 pork dumplings, fried or steamed, cost $5.40 (54 cents each). They’re tasty, are only fried on one side if you choose that preparation and are very doughy, but you get a lot to eat. The dipping sauce here is sweeter than some of the others. Number 1 Chinese Restaurant (9378465) at 120 Westchester Ave., near the corner of New Broad Street, is the next best value with eight fried or steamed pork dumplings for $5 (62.5 cents each). The fried preparation is better, the filling is good and the dumplings appear golden brown. The dipping sauce here comes out of a big jar. It’s thin and salty. From what I’ve read, the traditional dipping sauce for pork gyoza—Japanese pot stickers—which originated in China, is made with soy sauce, rice vinegar and
rayu, the latter defined as chili infused oil. Another Chinese dumpling dipping sauce recipe called for soy sauce and sesame oil. At many of the eight restaurants we sampled, there were sliced scallions floating in it. Ricky Chan, co-owner of Sichuan Pavilion at 480 Westchester Ave., corner of Merritt Street, said they make their own dipping sauce using soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, ginger, scallions and chicken broth. Next in line as far as value is China House (939-7288) at 170B North Main St. (between Mill and Highland streets) where eight pork dumplings, steamed or fried, cost $5.40 (67.5 cents each). Juicy on the inside, they explode when you take a bite and are fried golden brown if you choose that preparation. I found China House’s dipping sauce too salty. I didn’t have any complaints about the others.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Dumplings, anyone?
Continued from page 4
A few years ago Chan at Sichuan Pavilion turned me on to pan-seared pork dumplings, which he said are one of their best sellers. Previously I had always ordered steamed dumplings but discovered that these are better. Pan searing, rather than steaming, extracts water from the dough and makes it less filling, he said. The fried or steamed pork dumplings at Manchu Garden (939-8688) in the strip shopping center at 504 Westchester Ave. on the Port Chester/Rye Brook border are only slightly more expensive at eight for $5.95 (75 cents each). They are large, the dough is thick, but the pork stuffing tastes excellent and they are juicy inside.
has tuna wasabi dumplings (two for $12, $16 with blue crab). We had the cheaper variety made with kani crab, guacamole, tobiko (this variety was black and clearly visible on top of each) and thinly sliced blue fin tuna shaped into the dumplings. Honey wasabi sauce was drizzled on the plate underneath each. They were slightly spicy, had a slippery outside and went down easily. The sashimi tuna dumplings (2 for $7) at Edo Japanese Steak House on Midland Avenue, which has a sushi bar area with tables as you enter, are shaped similarly and filled with avocado but missing the crab, therefore the cheaper price. These have a crunch to them, I’m not sure from what, and come in a special sauce with a hint of mustard decorating the plate. Like the others, these are tricky to eat without making a mess.
Quality We found the quality to be higher at the Asian restaurants that cater to inhouse diners. But so are the prices. For instance, the pan-seared dumplings, which are filled with pork, at Buddha (481-4651) at 1 Rye Ridge Plaza are small and delicate and slightly crunchy, but you only get five pieces for $6 ($1.20 each), and they are not very filling. The pork tenderloin pot stickers at Euro Asian Bistro (937-3680) at 30 Westchester Ave., corner of Waterfront Place, look like baby empanadas, are tender and slightly crunchy, with a refined taste. These are larger than those at Buddha but cost more, too—$8 for five pieces ($1.60 each). They were served beautifully golden brown. Rather than the traditional thin brown sauce for dipping, keeping with the Asian fusion style of the restaurant, these are served on top of a creamy balsamic sauce. Edo Japanese Steak House (9373333), in the small shopping center adjacent to Pathmark at 140 Midland Ave., is the only place that calls its dumplings pork gyoza. Of the five pieces, we ordered three steamed and two pan-seared and were obliged. These are small, delicate and those that are pan-seared are only slightly crispy. They cost $5.75 for five dumplings ($1.15 each). Sichuan Pavilion’s classic pork dumplings ($6 for six) combine the best of both worlds—quality and value ($1 each). The dough is less dense than that at the highvalue restaurants, and the stuffing is delicious. This time around we had the pork dumplings steamed, but, as I said earlier, I’ve had them pan-seared as well and now prefer them that way. For our dumpling taste test, we had the vegetable dumplings at Sichuan Pavilion (939-8889) pan-seared, and they were deliciously crunchy.
Eat in or take out? While Sichuan Pavilion does a brisk takeout business, I prefer to eat in whenever possible. It only seats 28 to 30, so you might not get a table during the prime
Other Asian restaurants with dumplings The four Chinese restaurants whose dumplings we didn’t get a chance to try are: East Wok Restaurant 140 Midland Ave., Port Chester 939-0068 King Garden Chinese Restaurant 32 Grace Church St., Port Chester 939-4310 Panda Restaurant 213 Westchester Ave., Port Chester 937-4699 Wah Yuan Chinese Restaurant Post Road Plaza 262 Boston Post Rd., Port Chester 939-7776

times for restaurants, but the freshness and quality of almost any dish is lost to a certain degree when it is taken out. Although they have tables, some of the smaller Asian restaurants in town are apparently designed strictly for takeout, at least in the winter, because, to put it bluntly, they are damn cold inside. I guess they figure that the cooks are keeping warm in the kitchen, so they don’t care about the customers. Although I generally like the food at Manchu Garden, for instance, forget about eating there if it’s at all cold outside. I’m surprised the large coy in their aquarium don’t freeze their gills off in the wintertime.
taste is vibrant but not spicy. The crystal shrimp dumplings (five for $6) look delicate and beautiful, almost like shells. They are shiny, scalloped and plump but have a very subtle taste. These come in a round metal container and are served with a definitely house made but traditional dipping sauce. The duck dumplings (five for $9) are flat and in the shape of an irregular half circle. Moist and meaty, they are served with a yummy thick plum sauce. The chicken mushroom variety (five for $7) are made with a different dough, resemble an empanada, and are baked
On the spicy side Something different at Edo are their Buffalo chicken dumplings ($5.75), obviously a takeoff on Buffalo chicken wings. You get four large deep-fried dumplings that look like empanadas and are filled with mildly spicy shredded chicken. Savory and crunchy, they are served with bleu cheese sauce for dipping. We did have the shrimp shumai (minced shrimp) dumplings (seven for $5.25) at Edo. They resembled Tater Tots, were small and had a subtle taste. They came with a traditional house made dipping sauce. So did the rocket shrimp (five pieces for $5.75), marinated shrimp with a crispy wonton wrap that you can pop in your mouth. House made duck sauce with
Dumplings in all shapes and sizes In addition to pork dumplings, we consumed many other types at each of our eight sample restaurants. Besides pork, several have vegetable dumplings. Those at Ho Sai Gai on Willett Avenue, eight for $5 like the pork variety, are filled with lots of colorful vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, broccoli and scallions, are crunchy and healthytasting. My husband enjoyed them with Chinese mustard rather than the dipping sauce. We were able to order a combination of fried and steamed. The young woman who took our order spoke perfect English which was helpful. At Manchu Garden on the village lines, on the other hand, we taste tested the only dumplings we absolutely couldn’t stomach. Their vegetable dumplings, eight for $5.95, have little color inside, are mostly filled with cabbage, and taste dreadful, we all agreed. The bland variety at China House on North Main Street, eight for $5.40 like their pork ones, weren’t much better. The veggie dumplings at Sichuan Pavilion, $7 for six, are filled with green beans, broccoli, carrots and celery root encapsulated by green dough colored with spinach juice. Pan-seared, they are filling but wonderfully crunchy. Unlimited refills of oolong tea, large packaged wet hand towels for mopping up and tongs with which to pick up the dumplings made our subtle sampling all the more pleasant.
The biggest selection Buddha at Rye Ridge Plaza, both a Japanese steakhouse and Asian fusion restaurant, has the largest selection of dumplings in all of Port Chester and Rye Brook. As I said earlier, you can make a meal of them. All are beautifully made and presented. I recommend the Szechuan dumplings (five for $9), made with thin dough shaped into a pocket, filled with pork and shrimp and served in a brownish-orange peanut butter sauce filled with sesame seeds. The

to make them crunchy, harder and dryer than the others. They are still flavorful. We didn’t try the shumai—Japanese style steamed shrimp dumplings—or the veggie dumplings (both $6). There’s also an 8-piece dumpling sampler for $12 which gets you two pork, two shrimp, two duck and two vegetable—a good bet if you want to try them all.
The sashimi dumpling Also at Buddha, we discovered a nontraditional dumpling, but a dumpling nonetheless, listed under sushi: the tuna wasabi dumpling (two pieces for $10). Two thin pieces of reddish pink tuna are stuffed with crab, avocado, tobiko (flying fish roe) and molded into two large dumplings. They are drizzled with and sitting in a creamy guacamole and wasabi sauce which decorates the plate along with sprigs of parsley and a grape tomato between the two. These creations are messy to eat but delicious. As it turns out, Euro Asian Bistro in The Waterfront at Port Chester also
pieces of red chilis floating in it was an alternative. Dishes are beautifully presented at Euro Asian Bistro where we also had delicate, irregularly shaped Szechuan dumplings filled with minced shrimp and pork ($8 for six) in a spicy sesame peanut sauce incorporating both black and white seeds and served on a bed of lettuce. Spicier than that at Buddha, they were equally appetizing. Speaking of spicy, Sichuan Pavilion also has lovely steamed Sichuan dumplings ($8 for six), irregularly shaped light dough filled with chicken, pork and water chestnuts and served in their own mildly spicy sauce topped with sesame seeds and scallions. Lastly, you can get Szechuan wontons (10 for $4.50) at China House on North Main, and these are really spicy. They are small, filled with pork and sprinkled with scallions. The yellow dough is much more delicate than that used for dumplings. These wontons are served in a thin orange sauce that resembles Szechuan oil.
