RESTAURANT REVIEW
Family preserves Marianacci’s 50-year Italian tradition Fine Italian cuisine, old world ambiance By Jananne Abel
I
t’s been seven years since I reviewed Marianacci’s Restaurant. It was among the early eateries I wrote up after we started this monthly dining guide in 1995. I had good things to say about the food and service then and the same compliments still follow. In fact, besides some recent cosmetic changes to freshen up the décor, it remains much the same. Advertised as “A Bit of the Old World in Port Chester,” Marianacci’s has been a tradition in the village for 53 years. Originally called Sherman Tavern, it is tucked away in a residential neighborhood off South Regent Street. “My dad started the business in 1950, took a little neighborhood tavern and made it into a fine Italian restaurant,” said coowner Jimmy Marianacci, who carries on the family tradition with his father’s brother, Eddie Marianacci, now in his 70s, and a handful of other relatives. “A lot of people have come through these doors in the last 53 years,” said Jimmy, who grew up in the business. “It’s a proud heri-
said Jimmy. “They do a good job for us. We try to treat people the way we would like to be treated.” While I wouldn’t call Marianacci’s a family restaurant as there isn’t a children’s menu, it’s a good bet for Mother’s Day, May 12. The restaurant will be taking reservations from 3 to 7 p.m. and offering its regular a la carte menu plus specials (not set as of press time) and smaller portions for the kids. Small plates are avail—Jimmy Marianacci, co-owner able for most entrées on a regular basis. others deleted according to the A family operation season, most of the restaurant’s steeped in tradition specialties, made from family recipes that have been handed When Benny Marianacci and down through the years, remain friend Jasper Caviola bought the constant. So does the loyal staff, business that is now even those who are not related. Seating at the back of restaurant, up a few steps from the main room, once the smoking section, is now used for overflow seating on the weekends and holidays and for private parties. Born in Abruzzi in Central Italy, Benny was a cabinet maker by trade. He also worked in a dress factory and continued that job after he went into business with Caviola at the Sherman Tavern. The name changed when Caviola retired. Benny’s brother Eddie worked part-time at the restaurant from its inception, has been a partner since the 1950s, and, although semi-retired, is still very much involved in the operation, greeting patrons as maitre d’ for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday. Benny died in 1994. It is obvious that Jimmy is proud of the restaurant his father created and wants to keep it going in the same fine tradition. He admits, however, that it’s a tough business and has become more challenging over the years.
“This business is very tough with all the restaurants in the area, the economy and the weather we went through,” said Jimmy. “We’re doing fairly well in these tough times.” The restaurant has a good number of loyal customers. For instance, the Kennedys from Rye, who were dining there on a recent Monday night, have been eating at Marianacci’s regularly for the 30 years Nick Stella has been cooking there. Jimmy’s older brother, Bernie, was involved in the family business until 1994 when he moved to Florida, having also been there since he was young and having grown tired of it by then. “I’ve been here about 45 years now,” quipped Jimmy, 54. Other family members who take part in the operation include nephew Brian Cunningham, a Port Chester native who now lives in Trumbull, Conn., and Uncle Joe Frank, both chefs along with Jimmy, sister Marianne Pergamo of Port Chester, who works as a hostess, and cousins Flo and Carol. RESTAURANT REVIEW
Family preserves Marianacci’s 50-year Italian tradition years, Marianacci’s maintains its old world charm and doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. Traditional family recipes made with the freshest ingredients, expertly prepared and beautifully presented, are served in a conservatively decorated restaurant by longtime dedicated and knowledgeable staff. The atmosphere is warm and tables are well spaced so there is plenty of breathing room. At least one of the Marianaccis is usually around to oversee the entire operation. Prices on the a la carte menu are not inexpensive but neither are they out of line. And the portions are good-sized. Among the family recipes handed down and featured on the menu are Bracciole (thinly sliced beef rolled around a filling of herbed bread crumbs and blended cheeses, slowly cooked in tomato sauce at $21.75), Red Snapper con Arancia (an exclusive recipe featuring Florida red snapper prepared in a light orange sauce made with orange juice and priced according to market) and Scrod or Sole Marianacci (fish topped with seasoned bread crumbs, onion and tomato, baked with white wine, lemon and butter at $22.75). Chef Stella said there has been difficulty getting Florida snapper lately but that the same recipe can be made using filet of sole instead. While pizza hasn’t been served at Marianacci’s for many years, Jimmy said it may be coming back. He joked that “we have the family recipe hidden in the vault.” He recalls fondly the pizza and sandwich days at the Sherman Tavern when he was in junior high and used to go there to clean up. Another lovely tradition is the beautiful china used at Marianacci’s which goes back at least to the early 1980s when I first reviewed the restaurant. The dishes are a pretty red, blue and green flowered pattern of Syracuse china.
Dinner for four For a recent Saturday night dinner for four at Marianacci’s, we started the meal off with Antipasto Caldo ($9.75), which we all shared. It consisted of two stuffed clams, two stuffed mushrooms, a stuffed shrimp and eggplant topped with mozzarella. The first three are stuffed with seasoned bread crumbs. One was as good as the other, the whole clams sliding down my throat along with the scrumptious topping which melted in my mouth. We also shared a lovely salad of fresh mixed greens with tomato, onion and fennel topped with gorgonzola cheese ($6.75). To complement our meal, I selected Pierfedo 2000 Pinot Grigio Isonzo del Friuli ($30), a dry yet flavorful Italian white wine. It is among the large selec-

Pollo All’Abruzzese, boneless chicken breast cooked in a socalled spicy wine sauce with mushrooms, peppers and onions ($18.75), was prepared for my daughter without the mushrooms. It was colorful and beautifully presented. A healthy portion of thinly sliced chicken breast was topped with the vegetables and served in a sauce which was tangy and tasty but not what I’d call spicy. It was served with risotto and buttery green beans. Scrod Marianacci, described above as one of the house specialties, was out of this world, the mild fish perfectly cooked and the topping accenting it favorably. The same risotto and green beans came with the fish. Roasted red pepper sliced thin added color to the plate. My husband raved about the Lasagne Marianacci, pasta layered with fresh ricotta cheese and a blended meat filling ($15.75), which he said was like none other he has tasted. It was surprisingly light for lasagne and an excellent choice. Our 10-year-old opted for a full rather than half order of Capellini con Filetto di Pomodoro, angel hair pasta served in a delicious sauce of tomato, onion and prosciutto ($15.75) which we managed to finish after everyone had taken samples. For dessert we chose from a tray of pies and cakes brought to the table. The chocolate walnut tort ($5.75) wasn’t too heavy, the slice not too large, and it was topped with whipped cream, just right for chocolate lovers like me. Canoli cake with frosting ($5.75) didn’t appeal to me as much but pleased my 10-yearold and apple crisp was served
warm in its own small crock topped with vanilla ice cream ($6.75), good although not the best I’ve ever tasted. Our check with two coffees came to $152.92 without tip. Ida DiPalma was our waitress and provided the attentive, warm service a mother or grandmother would give.
Menu, hours, parking The Marianacci’s menu is not large, containing five pasta dishes and 15 seafood entrées plus four salads and seven appetizers. Surprisingly there are no soups. In addition, there are daily pasta, meat and seafood specials according to the season. Prices on the menu, printed in Italian with clear English explanations un-

der each item, range from $15.75 for Penne con Salsicce, quill shaped pasta prepared in a tomato sauce with sausage and gorgonzola, to $25.75 for Bistecca alla Fioretina, prime shell steak broiled with olive oil, garlic and lemon. Specials recommended by chef Nick Stella include Veal Chop with Portobello Mushrooms and Sweet Onions, Ricotta Lobster Ravioli with Tomato Basil Sauce, Scrod Livornese (with black and green olives, onions and capers in a light tomato sauce), and Swordfish al Ferri, cooked in Marianacci’s own sauce of balsamic vinegar, oil, onions, lemon and seasoning. The lunch menu features the same specialties as the dinner menu except there are smaller portions and prices. Prices range from $14.25 to $15.75 for pasta and $15.75 to $21.75 for meat and seafood dishes. Marianacci’s is open seven days for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Lunch is served from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reservations are recommended, especially on Friday and Saturday. There is plenty of free parking in a lot across the street. A colorful reproduction of a painting of Torrebruna, Benny Marianacci’s hometown in Italy, appears on the cover of both the lunch and dinner menu. A painting of the tiny town also hangs prominently in the restaurant. In 1985-86, Benny helped raise the money to rebuild the steeple and restore the long silent church bells in Torrebruna. His son noted that his father was proud of his

roots and the town he grew up in. Jimmy, who speaks some Italian, has been to Italy three times but not lately. “This business has been occupying all my time,” he said.
Décor, background, smoking ban New Mediterranean style chandeliers, in keeping with the old world look of the restaurant, are a highlight of the cosmetic changes completed six months ago at Marianaccis. They also included a fresh coat of paint, new rugs and curtains and new tile in the bar area. You enter Marianacci’s, a beige stucco building with orange trim around the windows and a navy awning with white lettering, through a heavy wooden door. You come into a foyer and then pass a cozy bar and lounge with soft chairs and a grand piano to your right. Presently between pianists, the restaurant previously had piano music in the lounge every other Saturday and plans to start that up again soon. The main dining room is broken by low walls with valances which create a partitioned effect. The entire room is trimmed in oak and lit by the striking chandeliers as well as globed candles on each table. The décor features peach tablecloths, contrasting mauve napkins, an eclectic mix of comfortable chairs and benches, and green and gold carpeting. Sheer white curtains hang at the windows and one wall is mirrored. A few potted trees decorate the dining room and a huge urn of fresh flowers and wine bottles on a table divides one section from another. The restaurant was completely renovated in 1981, creating the new expanded lounge, entrance and interior décor. The tree-lined sidewalk with brick pavers outside the establishment was also completed then. Before that, a dining room was added in 1952 and another addition was completed in 1975 which included a new kitchen and dining room. It was at that time that the name changed to Marianacci’s. Jimmy, who grew up in Port Chester and graduated from Port Chester High School, now lives in Greenwich. He and his wife have two children, a daughter Ashley, 20, who is attending Sacred Heart University, and a son Adam, 17, a junior at Greenwich High School. He feels the smoking ban in Westchester bars and restaurants that will take effect June 4 will affect business to some degree. “We do have a number of steady customers that smoke and sit in that bar area,” he said. “It will affect us like everyone else. We’ll have to wait and see if customers will go across the border, but we hope our food stands above that.”
