RESTAURANT REVIEW

Black Bear Grille serves up American regional cuisine in a rich, warm setting By Jananne Abel

group that up to this point has specialized in themed bars in Connecticut and Westchester has opened its first restaurant/ catering facility just across the river in the Byram section of Greenwich. Taking over the former Riverhouse Restaurant at the corner of Mill and South Water streets, Post Road Entertainment has introduced an American grill offering regional cuisine representative of different parts of the United States. Having kept the décor much the same as it was under the previous owners but adding their own special touches such as wallpaper on the dining room ceilings which makes them look like tin and flat screen TVs on the walls, the management has succeeded in making Black Bear Grille a casual, cozy eating spot.

A

Chris Hazzard of White Plains, general manager and partner, and Jesse Salas of Port Chester, chef and partner, have been working together the last six years at another restaurant and catering facility in White Plains which Hazzard chose not to name. Salas, a chef for 14 years, hails from New Orleans where he trained under well-known chefs Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer. Other partners include Donald Kelly of White Plains, Albert Silverman and Todd Kosakowski, both of Valhalla. The group also owns Black Bear Saloons in White Plains, Stamford and Norwalk; The Thirsty Turtle in White Plains and Stamford, Kelly’s in White Plains, Great American Pub in White Plains and Hoolah Hank’s, a beach-themed bar in New Haven and Stamford. With Black Bear Grille, which opened April 17, the group wanted to step above the saloons it has become noted for and create a local drinking, dining and catering establishment, said Hazzard. He emphasized that the grill serves lots of fish, steaks, pastas and sandwiches. There are also burgers, wraps, salads and “rustic grilled” pizzas. Since Black Bear is only a month old, it’s fair to say that the management is still working out the kinks and refining the operation. On our first trip only a few weeks after the opening, I wasn’t overly impressed with the food, thought the burgers were overpriced, a large salad was on the small side, the steak sandwich was mediocre and the service was only passable. A second visit shared with friends convinced me that I had jumped to conclusions and in fact there are several interesting,

tasty items on the menu, some of which I can already recommend and others I’ll have to return to sample. I also concluded that, besides the burgers, prices are reasonable. What’s more, our service was far superior this time around. Both times we sat in the lovely back room, weren’t rushed and enjoyed a relaxing meal. Starting this week daily specials have been added to create additional interest and reasons to return.

Décor The décor at Black Bear Grille, largely created by the previous owners who had completely renovated the space and added a lovely stone fireplace, exudes warmth with its rich wood paneling, stone accents and shiny wood floors. The main dining room features booths on either side and another at the back facing the fireplace with lovely wooden tables and chairs in the middle topped with white paper and royal blue cloth napkins. Matching blue Saratoga water bottles decorate the tables along with vases filled with colorful dahlias. Pretty fixtures hang from the ceiling and others are attached to the walls. The restaurant seats 130 in the main dining room and a back room which can also be reserved for private parties of from 25 to 45. The back room is surrounded by paned windows decorated with paw prints and features doors that can be left open for regular dining or closed for privacy and flat screen TVs on the walls. Beige and brown valances hang at the windows. A private room downstairs has just been remodeled with a rich wooden bar, gold floral carpeting and two-tone beige walls. This

With its wood and stone décor, fireplace and comfortable booths, the main dining room at Black Bear Grille radiates warmth. room can accommodate from 45 to 100 people for any type of event and is even set up for corporate functions with computer hookups and screens. The restaurant also has a goodsized and richly-appointed bar area, also decorated in wood and stone, with a few tables for those who choose to dine there and several higher tables and chairs for four designed for drinkers as well as 10 tall chairs at the mirror-backed bar.

Dinner for four Each meal starts with a plate of flavorsome hummus and pita sliced into miniature triangles. For starters I ordered a margarita straight up ($10) which was served in a salted glass and poured from a shaker. So far beer is only available in bottles but later will also be on tap. Corona ($5) came without lime slices, but then, this isn’t a Mexican restaurant. As far as nonalcoholic beverages, it was a pleasure to get fresh brewed iced tea without sugar. Our choice of the Black Bear Wings Sampler Platter ($9.95) for four to share was an excellent one. It brought 3-4 each of Tennessee Bourbon Hickory, Louisiana’s Crystal Hot and Thai Peanut Crumb chicken wings, each preparation unique and delicious in its own way. The first has a thick, sweet sauce, the second more spicy and a tad salty, the third mildly nutty. The wings were accompanied by celery and carrot sticks and a mild dipping sauce with chunks of bleu cheese to temper the flavors as desired. Wrapped wipes made cleanup a snap.

The soup of the day ($3.95) was a cooling gazpacho, a generous portion of a thin but tart and pleasing vegetable concoction topped with a swirl of sour cream. While we didn’t have it on this occasion, I can also recommend Black Bear’s Onion Soup ($4.50), a tasty broth chock full of onions served over a piece of toasted French bread and topped with melted cheese. The Lobster Salad Wrap ($13.95) was a treat with chunks of Maine lobster, diced celery, sweet peppers, red onions, mixed greens, tomato and tarragon aioli (garlic mayonnaise) served on a white tortilla accompanied by crunchy, yummy sweet potato fries and a pickle. Black Bear’s Shrimp Penne ($16.95) brought five large shrimp sautéed with garlic and oil, white wine, diced tomatoes, basil and

kalamata olives served over penne pasta and finished with shaved Reggiano parmesan. For shrimp lovers, this combination is a mouth-watering one assuming you like olives which make it somewhat—but not too—salty. One of our guests enjoyed the Grilled Veggie Wrap ($8.95) which combines grilled Portobello mushrooms, sweet bell peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant and greens tossed with a creamy balsamic vinaigrette and served on a whole wheat tortilla with sweet potato fries. While I didn’t taste it, she reported that it was excellent. Nor did I sample the Kodiak Burger ($10.95), 10 ounces of beef topped with apple wood smoked bacon, Black Bear BBQ sauce and Wisconsin cheddar cheese but received a good report on it. From our previous visit I can say that the Please turn to page 6R

RESTAURANT REVIEW Black Bear Grille serves up American regional cuisine in a rich, warm setting Continued from page 3R hamburgers are good-sized, have excellent flavor and provide a portion that is more than the average person can eat in one sitting. There are 10-ounce turkey burgers ($8.95) for those who prefer it. Our server brought the array of desserts on a tray for viewing and description. The apple tart, a goodsized round pastry filled with sliced apples, was served beauti-

fully with dollops of whipped cream, a sprig of mint, sliced strawberries and caramel syrup decorating the plate. The only disappointment was that it was served cold. The teardrop cappuccino cake, shaped like a teardrop with almond cake on the bottom and coffee-flavored mousse on top, was similarly presented with whipped cream and caramel syrup minus the strawberries. While good, our guest said that after a few bites, the

coffee flavor became too overwhelming to be enjoyable. Both desserts were $6.50. We had a cute, peppy waitress who made our dining experience a pleasure. Our check totaled $120.53.

Other menu items and specials The same menu is used for lunch and dinner. General Man-

ager Hazzard recommended the Cedar Plank BBQ Salmon ($16.95), Herb Ritz Crusted Rainbow Trout (pan roasted and served with wild rice and seasonal vegetables at $15.95), the Kobe Burger ($14.95), 10 ounces of extraordinarily lean, tender and fullflavored Kobe beef; and the Open Faced Steak Sandwich (grilled skirt steak, brie and grilled onions served on Tuscan bread with garlic mayo and Black Bear spiced

fries at $12.95). In addition, besides the dishes we had for dinner described above, the Herbed Ricotta Ravioli ($14.95), Bear Hug Wrap (grilled salmon with chive sour cream, red onions, arugula and sliced plum tomatoes served on a tomato-basil tortilla with sweet potato fries at $10.95) and the Pan Roasted Southwestern Chicken (crusted with sweet peanut crumbs and served over garlic whipped Idaho potatoes garnished with a corn tortilla hay at $15.95) sound intriguing. Grilled shrimp, chicken, salmon or skirt steak can be added to any salad (Caesar, Portobello, Black Bear or Spinach) at an extra charge (from $4 for chicken up to $8 for shrimp). Salads range in price from $4.95 for a small Black Bear Salad (mesclun, cucumbers, red onions, grape tomatoes, mushrooms and croutons) to $9.95 for Spinach Salad with spiced candied pecans, Japanese Panko crusted goat cheese rounds, grape tomatoes and Bermuda onion tossed with a California Calimyrna fig balsamic vinaigrette. The specials that started this week and will change every 3-4 days include Cream of Andalusian Shrimp Gazpacho ($3.95), Grilled Shrimp and Chopotle Pizza with a Cilantro Chiffonade topped with a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, Grilled Cobia (a lemon fish like mahi mahi) over Caesar Salad, Southwestern Ancho Chili Pulled Chicken with Fire Roasted Sweet Corn and Black Beans tossed with Bowtie Pasta in a natural reduction and Sautéed Medallions of Veal Paillard with a Grilled Vegetable Napolean nestled atop whipped potatoes and drizzled with basil and chili infused oils. No prices are included on the list of specials. To accompany meals, wines are available by the glass and bottle, and there are some specialty martinis listed on the back of the menu. I was disappointed that no frozen drinks were offered, but they are coming, said Hazzard. Desserts ($6.50) change daily “depending on what we want to showcase,” said Hazzard. Some are made on the premises, others are imported. “Since we are a new restaurant, we are trying to figure out what people like,” said Hazzard. The crème brulée is a house specialty and always available. The pecan tart offered on our first visit was memorable.

Hours and parking Black Bear Grille is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., with food served until 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 2 a.m., with dinner served until 11 p.m. and a late night menu available till 1 a.m., and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., with food served until 10 p.m. Parking is available in a large lot on the premises or on the street. A second entrance to the parking lot has been opened up so there is now access from Mill Street as well as South Water Street.
