Eclisse caters to everyone— families and individuals alike By Jananne Abel

Y

ou enter Eclisse in Rye Brook and immediately notice the aroma of garlic coming from the visible open kitchen. Perhaps it’s from the homemade focaccia just out of the oven or from any number of dishes being prepared. Eclisse, one of four restaurants owned by Par Shakiban, a longtime Westchester restaurateur, serves up delicious Northern Italian cuisine either family-style or in individual portions. It opened almost 14 years ago--in August 1992--in the Washington Park Plaza, replacing Par’s, which had been known for its steaks, salad bar and historic, eclectic décor. Eclisse took the place of Par’s when the dining trend shifted and people stopped eating red meat in favor of what they perceived as more healthy foods. Some of the frescos and ornate mahogany woodwork which had come from various historic buildings remain from the 275 S. Ridge St. restaurant’s days as Par’s, which was also owned by Shakiban and dates back to October 1980. Eclisse means “eclipse” and, when it opened, it was the intent of the owners (Shakiban then had two partners) to eclipse the old style of Italian restaurants and bring in this new way of serving family-style. It was also the end of one type of restaurant and the beginning of a new one. Almost two years ago the menu was revamped so both individual and family-style portions are available, said Executive Chef Jeff Abate, a native of Eastchester who now lives in New Fairfield, Conn. He has

been working in the restaurant business about 14 years, the last five for Shakiban, and graduated from the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park in 1999. He creates the specials at Eclisse every day, oversees the kitchen and does most of the purchasing for Shakiban’s four restaurants. The others are Laguna in White Plains, Miraggio in Yorktown Heights and Eclisse in Stamford. Shakiban also owns Patisserie Salzburg in Rye. Several months ago there was talk of Eclisse closing and reopening as a steakhouse again, something Abate said he didn’t know much about and preferred not to discuss. “We’re going forward and Mother’s Day is coming up,” he said, noting that Mother’s Day is the restaurant’s biggest holiday of the year. “We will probably do close to 1,000 people,” he said. Eclisse is a large, noisy, fastpaced restaurant that caters to large parties but can just as easily accommodate two or four. For dinner, all dishes, including the appetizers and salads, are served either family-style, designed to serve two or more people, or as individual portions. Eclisse is located at 275 S. Ridge St. in the Washington Park Plaza. with fancy patterns, brick and lovely mahogany, some pieces ornately carved (having come from a church in England), have been put together to create the interesting interior décor. Green cloths peek out from under white tablecloths, and there are matching green napkins. Pretty wooden bar stools have green cushions. Behind the wait bar on the first landing is another attractive historical 3-dimensional panel. A private room for up to 50 people downstairs can be booked or the atrium can be rented for a private affair for up to 120. Because there’s a lot of space and flexibility at Eclisse, parties of 20-30 can be accommodated in the smaller dining room or the atrium without a problem.

Staff

The chef at Eclisse is Castulo Sanchez of Port Chester who is aided by others who are in charge of different stations--one who

makes the tomato sauces, one in charge of pasta, another meats and another pizza. Eclisse is fortunate to have a loyal staff, headed by Manager Val Rocha of Port Chester, who has been there for five years. One of the waiters has worked at the restaurant for 16 years and other staff members have been around 10-12 years, he said. Both he and Executive Chef Abate attributed their longevity to the fair and respectful way the owner treats his employees. On both of our recent visits and in the past we have received professional, attentive service, surely the result of this employee loyalty and longevity.

Dinner for four

Meals start with a basket of bread, both delicious homemade garlic-flavored focaccia and pane di casa, standard Italian loaves purchased from a bakery on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

On a recent visit, to accompany our meal we chose Smoking Loon Merlot, described as ripe with a richness and blackberry fruit flavor ($25). It lived up to the description and was an excellent choice at a good price. Next we went with a familystyle order of Baby Spinach Salad alla Champagne ($12) for all four to share. Besides the spinach, it consisted of dried cranberries, orange and apple slices topped with gorgonzola cheese and champagne vinaigrette. The salad was plenty for four and drew raves for its freshness and both sweet and tangy flavor. The Capellini Pomodoro Gamberetti, five jumbo shrimp, fresh tomatoes, garlic and olive oil ($14/$19) over angel hair pasta, was outstanding. Served very hot, it had a garlicky, flavorful taste and included plenty of pasta cooked to perfection. An individual gamberetti gourmet pizzette ($12) came with rock shrimp, broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olive pesto and provolone, each item placed in a circular fashion on the thincrusted pie cut into eight pieces. The pizzette proved to be both an attractive and tasty selection. Although the Penne Eclisse ($12/$20), mentioned above, is among the restaurant’s most popular dishes, we weren’t overly taken with it, finding it rather bland. Gnocci Paesano ($12/$19), medium-sized potato dumplings in a thin sauce with fresh tomatoes, garlic and oil topped with chunks of fresh mozzarella, was yummy but filling, meaning I could only eat a small amount in one sitting. For dessert, the Profiteroles ($5.50) brought three pasty shells filled with vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate sauce and decorated with raspberry and chocolate swirls. Superb! The slice of Granny Smith Apple Tart ($5.50), while delicious, would have been even better served warm. Chocolate and raspberry sauce were drizzled over the top with a dollop of whipped cream

and a mint sprig on the side. Our check came to $119.59.

Menus, Wine List

Eclisse’s very readable dinner menu fits on one large page with prices included for both individual and family-style portions. Besides the one mentioned previously, there are three other salads, including Insalata di Cesare ($7/$10) I can recommend for its freshness, classic Caesar dressing and crunchy croutons. For appetizers, there are three cold and seven hot ones, including Sesame Tuna ($9/$14), Portobello alla Griglia ($8/$13), Cozze Marinara (steamed mussels in marina sauce for $9/$13) and Mozzarella e Pomodoro (fresh mozzarella, roasted papers and tomatoes for $9/$13). Four varieties of gourmet pizzettes range in price from $10 to $12. Besides those discussed above, some of the other 12 pasta dishes include Ravioli Tri Colore (jumbo gulf shrimp and peas in light cognac cream sauce at $14/$19), Linguini Nero (rock shrimp, sea scallops, asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes in saffron lobster sauce at $12/$20) and basics like lasagna ($13/$21) and linguini with clam sauce ($14/$19). Zuppa di Pesce (an Eclisse classic mixing fish of the day, lobster, crab cluster, jumbo shrimp, clams and mussels in a tomato and wine broth at $39 for two people) and Sautéed Norwegian Salmon Marechiaro (with clams, mussels and rock shrimp in a light marinara sauce at $16/$23) are among the handful of entrées from international waters. Five chicken and veal dishes are all priced at $14 and $19. Besides the Pollo Scarpariello mentioned above, some of the others include veal or chicken Parmigiana--an Eclisse original recipe--and Pollo Arrosto (roasted chicken, marinated tomatoes and roasted potatoes in a vinegar sauce). only in individual portions and range from $19 to $29, the latter for the Porterhouse Steak cited previously. I can recommend the New York Strip Eclisse ($19), a good-sized portion which was cooked to perfection and topped with roasted garlic butter, toasted Romano cheese and fried onion strips, a wonderful combination. The steaks and chops are all served with garlic mashed potatoes. Sides of broccoli rabe with garlic and oil, broccoli with lemon, seared Madeira mushrooms and sautéed spinach with lemon are also available for $5/$9 each. The wine list is on the back of the menu. Italian and domestic reds and whites as well as a smaller number of wines from around the world, one White Zinfandel and four Champagnes make up the list. They are priced from $21 to $74 per bottle with many in the $21 to $30 range. A few wines are also available by the glass at $7-$8.50. For lunch, only individual portions are served. The menu includes seven appetizers ($5.95 to $6.95), a soup of the day ($5.95), two salads ($5.95 and $7.95), individual pizzas ($9.95) and a panino ($6.50 for roasted peppers, grilled chicken and mozzarella with a Dijon vinaigrette dressing), 10 pasta dishes at $9.50 to $9.95 and eight meat and fish entrées ranging from $11.95 for grilled chicken breast with arugula and tomatoes to $17.95 for aged New York strip steak or petite filet mignon.

Specials and Mother’s Day

Specials change daily and are listed on a separate sheet within the menu. Every day there’s a least one soup, examples being Pasta e Fagiole and Chicken Barley ($5.95). A pasta dish, a risotto dish, at least one and often three fish entrées and a meat take their place on the list of specials. Besides those recommended by the executive chef earlier, Cavatelli with Grilled Chicken, shitake mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and gorgonzola cream and Risotto with Baby Shrimp, Roasted Peppers, arugula and fresh tomatoes have figured among the recent specials. For Mother’s Day, reservations will be taken for seating between 12 noon and 9 p.m. Customers will order off the regular menu or from the list of specials: 20-ounce rib eye chops ($34) “that are beautiful,” according to Executive Chef Abate, two or three fish specials ($20-$24), and Lobster Ravioli ($17/$29).

Hours and parking

Eclisse is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 12 noon to 3 p.m., for dinner those days from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 10 p.m. Because Eclisse is located in a shopping center, there is plenty of free parking.
