Restaurant review

Menu inventive, décor striking at Trevi Ristorante in Silver Lake By Jananne Abel

L

ast month I went beyond our usual geographic area and wrote up a restaurant in Harrison owned by a Rye Brook native. This month I’m doing the same. Joseph Engongoro, who grew up in Rye Brook, and his cousin Joseph Carvelli opened Trevi Ristorante in November 2008. Trevi, located in West Harrison (also called Silver Lake), features fine Italian cuisine, including extra thin personal pizzas and some creative pasta dishes and salads, served in an elegant modern setting. Trevi was created where Via Appia had stood for 30 years. The space at 11 Taylor Square, where Lake Street and Underhill Avenue intersect, was completely renovated over the course of six months by cousins Anthony Loizzo of Rye Brook and Joe Accurso of Port Chester and decorated by friend Jennifer Castellano of Creative Designs in Rye who helped with the design and the colors. Everything is new including the kitchen and the wood-burning oven which was installed brick by brick. “We left one outside wall standing and took everything else apart,” said Engongoro. Both Engongoro, 35, and Carvelli, 38, had experience in the restaurant business before pairing up on this new venture. Engongoro, who went to the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie, was the chef at Aurora

Then, as now, Carvelli was the manager, taking care of the front of the restaurant. Engongoro creates

the menu, specials and is in charge of the kitchen. “This is something we wanted to do for a while,” said Engongoro, whose parents James and Maria still lived on Rock Ridge Drive in Rye Brook until a few months ago. They are currently renovating another house in Rye Brook. On a busy Saturday night when we visited, his mom and sister were helping out in the dining room. Engongoro, who now lives in West Harrison, said he doesn’t have a signature dish. However, he singled out the pasta, most of which is homemade (except linguine, penne and garganelli), and specifically the Chitarra con Anatra ($18), house made spaghetti, slow cooked duck, roasted tomato, garlic and olive oil. My husband ordered this extremely flavorful dish, which I sampled, on our first visit and raved about it. Besides the duck, Engongoro said the most popular dishes are the Bosco pizza (wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, black truffles, pecorino and mozzarella at $10) and the branzino (Mediterranean sea bass). Here it is roasted in the wood-burning oven, filleted and served with Sicilian olives, caper berries and broccoli di rape ($26). A hard-to-please member of our party was delighted with the flavor and presentation. Other fish—orata and pompano, for instance—are cooked in the woodburning oven and served whole.

Inventive menu I visited Trevi twice in recent weeks and between visits the menu switched from winter to spring. Engongoro plans to come out with a new menu four times a year to take advantage of what’s in season and “to get customers to try different things.” Besides the menu, there are anywhere from 3-6 daily specials based on the season and what’s available. A soup, appetizer, risotto, pasta and meat or fish are the usual specials. Some customers complained when the Insalata di Indivia ($11), for instance, was no longer on the menu with the change of seasons. And I’ll have to admit that I was considering ordering it again on my second visit because it was so good the first time, but instead I was forced to try another. The endive salad had endive, of course, as well as romaine hearts, frisée, figs and gorgonzola cheese tossed in a creamy red wine dressing—a wonderful combination and something you don’t get everywhere. I’m assured that it will definitely be back at a later date. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to try it myself, I was told the Tortellini Autunno ($17), homemade pasta filled with fall squash and served with brown butter sage sauce and amaretto cookie, also on the winter menu, was the

Restaurant review

Menu inventive, décor striking at Trevi Ristorante in Silver Lake best dish another in our party had ever tasted. Now, that’s saying something! The spring menu consists of five salads, including the Trevi ($10), a chopped salad with pear tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, asparagus, chick peas and onions; a soup of the day (shrimp bisque on our last visit); and other appetizers including carpaccio ($11), clams ($12) and rice balls filled with black truffle

cuisine, it covers all the varieties from Italy and represents all regions of the country rather than specializing in one, said Carvelli, who lives in Rye. Although he said most patrons are knowledgeable about wine, he will be glad to suggest wine pairing with specific dishes upon request. The lunch menu is similar albeit less extensive and expensive, and the por-

on the bottom, jumbo lump crabmeat in the middle and microgreens on top, all mixed with a light lemon dressing. Once again praising the pasta, I’d say that the Ravioli al Formaggio di Capra ($17), homemade ravioli stuffed with roasted beets, goat cheese, brown butter and ramps (early spring wild onions) was different, delicate and delicious. Eight medium-sized ravioli provided

I later learned that all the desserts are homemade except the New York cheesecake and the top-selling dessert is the bread pudding. Other choices are tira musu, lemon-flavored panna cotta (crème brulée without eggs) and biscotti. Our check came to $144.69. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, and service was attentive.

Eight personal pizzas range in price from $10 for New York style (tomato sauce and mozzarella) to $13 for Trevi with little neck clams, crispy pancetta, garlic and mozzarella. Ten pastas include the Chitarra con Anatra mentioned earlier as well as homemade Gnocchi al Pomodoro ($16) with tomato and basil sauce, Tagliatelle con Funghi (whole wheat pasta, morels, hedgehog mushrooms and red dandelion at $18) and Linguini alle Vongole (manila clams, pancetta, white wine, olive oil and dried chilies at $17). Among the entrées figure fish such as the Branzino in Camino mentioned earlier and Pescatrice in Acqua Pazza (monk fish in crazy water with fish broth, pearl pasta, chopped tomatoes and mixed vegetables at $24); Pork alla Milanese ($24); Scaloppini di Vitello ($28), veal scaloppini topped with zucchini and black truffle pecorino in a demi glaze sauce; and Pollo Scarpariello ($23), chicken, hot cherry peppers, sausage and rosemary. The Osso Bucco on the winter menu has been replaced with Braised Lamb Shank ($29) which in the summer will become lamb chops. The wine list, which features selections ranging in price from $30 to $150, is primarily Italian but also includes some varieties from California. Like the

tions are smaller. In addition, a lunch special is being offered whereby you get a choice of one appetizer and one entrée for $16—a good deal.

Dinner for three On my most recent visit to Trevi, a place where three roads come together as they do at Trevi Fountain in Rome, our party of three enjoyed a dish of black and green olives, a basket of Terranova bread and olive oil in a fancy bottle as we waited for our meal. We selected a bottle of Bramito del Cervo 2007 Chardonnay ($35), a dry, pleasant wine, to accompany our food. For appetizer, the wood-roasted little neck clams stuffed with seasoned breadcrumbs and pancetta ($12) brought six whole clams topped with the breadcrumb mixture for a tasty, buttery starter. Minus the endive salad, I went with the Insalata di Granchio ($15), which brought a lovely salad of chopped beats

an adequate although not huge portion. The Piccante Pizza ($12), normally topped with sausage, cherry peppers, tomato sauce and mozzarella, was made without the sausage upon request and was to everyone’s liking—thin, crunchy and spicy. The pasta special—homemade tagliatelle with lump crabmeat and sea urchin roe ($19)—contained plenty of crabmeat and almost melted in your mouth. And we did take some of it home. I had no room for dessert but nonetheless went with the homemade chocolate torte with pistachio gelato ($9), which was served warm and slightly oozing topped with powdered sugar. The plate was dotted with blackberries and decorated with raspberry sauce. It was yummy but would have been even better on an emptier stomach. The mango sorbetto ($6) brought a large portion also dotted with blackberries. Two frothy cappuccinos ($3.75 each) and an espresso ($2.25) topped off a wonderful meal.

You enter Trevi through an atrium lined with large potted plants, come to the reception desk and are drawn in by the smell of the wood-burning oven. Once inside, a striking black, white and beige horseshoe-shaped, marbletopped bar provides seating for 13. Beyond that is the dining room which seats 90 in two sections. White tablecloths (just white napkins at lunch) and dark wood are softened by shiny wood floors, earth tones and candles—tan-colored walls, a tapestry in browns and beiges, a metal sculpture, six brown wall hangings in a grouping and plates, vases, bottles and candles on the shelves of a large wall unit. All together, these create a warm atmosphere. An inset lighted ceiling allows for lighting, also provided by multi-colored earth tone candles on the tables, to be bright or dim. I found it very dim late on a Saturday night and enjoyed the daylight that streamed in on a Sunday evening.

Hours, Mother’s Day Trevi Ristorante is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m., for dinner Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. For Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9, Trevi will begin serving dinner at 5 p.m. as usual and will offer the regular menu plus specials. “A set menu limiting people to a few choices doesn’t work,” said Engongoro. The restaurant has its own on-premises parking. “Business has been very good so far,” said Engongoro. “A lot of people are hurting out there, but we’ve been doing pretty good.” He feels it’s due to a combination of the food and the service. He said they booked a few holiday parties which got the restaurant going and now people are hearing about the lunches and more and more people are coming out with the warmer weather.

Mother’s Day origins Mothers are the unsung heroes of the world. Every day they sacrifice their time and devote their love to the children they brought into the world. What mother doesn’t hope to be celebrated and pampered, if just for a bit, by her children in recognition for all she had done for them? That is why every year on the second Sunday of May children pay homage to their moms on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day hasn’t always been a standard spring holiday. In fact, mothers went officially uncelebrated for years and years. It wasn’t until the 20th century that an official holiday was established to honor mothers, grandmothers and the other special women in people’s lives. Anna Jarvis was a woman who made great strides toward establishing a national holiday for mothers. Jarvis held annual gatherings called “Mother’s Friendship Day” with an objective to heal the pain of the

victims and those affected by the Civil War. After her own mother died in 1905, Jarvis decided a national celebration of mothers was in order and began to campaign for such a holiday. Jarvis began by soliciting the pastor at the church where her mother had taught Sunday School classes for a special commemorative mass. The church obliged, and the first Mother’s Day celebration took place on May 10, 1908 at Andrew’s Methodist Church. Later that day, Jarvis celebrated Mother’s Day again with her brother at her home in Philadelphia. The Mother’s Day idea eventually caught on, and President Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914 that the second Sunday in May would be celebrated as Mother’s Day annually. Since then families have gathered annually together to give thanks to the special women who have helped shape their lives.

The strength of single mothers shines through our history There is no job more satisfying, demanding, and redeeming than that of mother. Life presents all types of mothers who may differ by circumstance but ultimately share a collective goal: to provide the best life possible for their children. History is peppered with stories of women who have persevered for the sake of their families, not for fanfare. What many do not know is that every day remarkable women take on the challenges of life alone raising their children and making history as single mothers. If you are a single mother, you’re not alone, says author Janine Turner. History provides the warmth and comfort of women who have done it successfully before you. Turner is perhaps best known as an accomplished actress who has starred in hit television series, such as “Northern Exposure” and

“Strong Medicine,” as well as box-office and television movies. Turner is also a director, singer, and now an author. Her book “Holding Her Head High: 12 Single Mothers Who Championed Their Children and Changed History” (Thomas Nelson Publishers) chronicles the lives of 12 women in history and brings to light how they advocated for their children to make a difference. Take, for example, Abigail Adams, whose husband John became the second U.S. president. She helped change the course of history by helping to birth democracy with her valiant wartime single motherhood during the American Revolution. Adams had to clothe, feed, educate and nurture her children as she managed the family farm and her husband’s business. Adams endured bitter winters and wartime fears

Did you know? The official flower for Mother’s Day is the carnation. Pink carnations are for living mothers, and white carnations are for those who have passed on.

and famine. Her devotion helped shape the character of her son John Quincy who would go on to further the family’s political legacy by becoming the sixth U.S. president. Turner, herself a single mother, pored through thousands of historical documents to bring alive the stories of women she says not only provided strength and inspiration, but changed the

course of history as well. Stories span generations and pinpoint women from the Roman Empire, such as Christian pioneer and saint Helena Augusta, to medieval times when Christine de Pizan became the first female professional writer. She may have been the antecedent, of sorts, for Elizabeth Timothy, the first female editor in colonial America.

These women turned tribulations into triumphs, championed their children and changed history, offers Turner. I find their voices to be amazingly modern, no matter the era. Find “Holding Her Head High: 12 Single Mothers Who Championed Their Children and Changed History” at your local bookseller or by visiting www.thomasnelson.com.
