RESTAURANT REVIEW
Asian Station serves up Japanese, Chinese and more Good value, great food and service in a cute setting By Jananne Abel
I
f you enjoy Chinese, Japanese and Thai food and are a tad adventurous, Byram’s newest restaurant is for you. Asian Station, located just across the Byram River from Port Chester at 4-6 North Water St., combines the cooking of the Southeast Asian countries of China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, presenting some of the best dishes from each. Good food, tastefully presented, and large portions are trademarks of this tiny eatery situated just off the corner of Mill and North Water streets in a storefront that has had many incarnations over the years.

Sushi chef Hsienchung Lee, originally from Taiwan but now living in Fresh Meadows, N.Y., expertly prepares sushi (seafood rolls made with rice) and sashimi (whole slices of raw fish) from Asian Station’s extensive menu including appetizers as well as entrées served with soup or salad. There are also a few sushi bar specials posted on a grease board each day. Our check, including a cucumber roll ($3.50) we ordered to take out, came to $47.30.
Recommendations Not a big fan of raw fish, I can definitely recommend the vegetable rolls and something new I tried recently called Naruto, listed under the “Sushi Bar Appetizers.” It is made with cooked crabmeat, avocado, cooked shrimp and tobiko (fish eggs) wrapped in cucumber skin and served with sushi vinegar sauce for dipping. All rolls come with pieces of fresh ginger and wasabi (green spicy horseradish paste) to use for extra flavoring according to taste. Since they were out of the cucumber skin, the Naruto was wrapped in the multicolored, delicate tasting seaweed used for the Tiger Roll instead. There’s a huge assortment of sushi and sashimi if that’s your cup of tea—from amaebi (shrimp) and ebi (sweet shrimp), both cooked, and kana (crab stick, also cooked), to hirame (fluke), tako (octopus), unagi (eel, also cooked), and uni (sea urchin). There’s a
Hawaii Roll (shrimp and mango at $8.95) which sounds interesting, a spider roll made with soft shell crab ($4.95), or a Sexy Roll ($4.95) made with raw tuna, salmon and mango. A Philadelphia Roll combines smoked salmon, cucumber, scallions and cream cheese ($4.95), an alternative to bagels, lox and cream cheese. Manager Tong recommends the Tiger Roll ($12.95) made with tuna, yellowtail and salmon combined with avocado, tobiko and crunch wrapped in white seaweed and the House Roll ($12.95) made with tuna, salmon, white fish, tobiko, avocado, scallions and crab stick wrapped in seaweed and lightly fried, served with a special sauce. He also suggests the Volcano Roll, a special made with shrimp tempura topped with eel and a spicy sauce. If you like raw salmon, the Salmon Treasure ($8.95), a Japanese appetizer, is also a good choice, made with chunks of salmon in a spicy but not overbearing sauce served in half of a peeled avocado surrounded by crunchy pieces of salmon skin (I think you have to acquire a taste for the skin.) It is served beautifully on a squarebrimmed dish with small, thinly sliced cucumber strips—the same as those used in the cucumber and Please turn to page 6R

Asian Station
Continued from page 3R other sushi rolls—decorating the lip. For entrées, the Singapore Angel Hair ($9.95) is a great bet and one of the restaurant’s more popular offerings, said waitress Melly Yap. It consists of thin noodles stir fried with good-sized shrimp, chicken, egg and onions in a brown curry sauce. Although indicated as hot and spicy on the menu, I found it on the milder side, especially compared to the Sambal Malaysia sauce, for instance. The Singapore Haloc sauce is flavorsome but not particularly spicy. This special sweet tomato wine sauce is good with soft shell crab ($17.95) and probably would be even better with prawns ($15). Once again, the presentation of this dish is lovely. The seafood comes in a crunchy, edible, deep-fried pastry shell and is accompanied by marinated sliced carrots and white radishes. Shaved scallions and carrots are sprinkled on top and cherry tomato halves are placed around the edge of the platter. Dishes made with Malaysia red coconut curry sauce are also popular, said Yap, as is the Pad Thai, Thai rice noodles with crushed peanuts and egg on top, priced at $8.95 for chicken or vegetable, $9.95 for beef or shrimp. My 10-year-old daughter raves about the Tangerine Beef ($11.95), a Chinese specialty made with crispy chunks of beef in a tangy tangerine sauce served with rice. Lemon Grass Chicken ($9.95) is also a crowd pleaser. Two good-sized chicken breast filets dipped in a light batter and fried until crispy are topped with a sweet Thai lemon grass sauce. I’ve yet to try the familiar Japanese Teriyaki chicken, steak or salmon ($10.25 to $15.95) or Tempura Shrimp ($15.95), both listed under “Chef’s Selections.” The Thai Cashew Chicken ($10.95), sliced chicken in a special brown sauce, sounds like a good choice for a future visit. I was impressed with the Tom Yam Goon, a soup made for two at a reasonable $6.95. The slightly spicy hot and sour soup consists of shrimp and vegetables in a light broth. It really warms you up on a cold day. Asian Station does a big takeout business. The restaurant also delivers to surrounding areas, including Port Chester and Rye Brook, with a minimum order of $18. Through the end of the year, the Pan-Asian eatery is offering 15% off on to go orders as an introductory promotion.
Lunch, hours and parking Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All lunch specials, priced at $6.95, are served with miso or hot and sour soup, and fried or white rice. Among the lunch platters to choose from are General Tsao’s Chicken, Pineapple Chicken, Thai Cashew Chicken, Malaysian Curry Chicken, Mango Chicken, Shrimp with Broccoli, Sesame Chicken, Hunan Shrimp, Pepper Steak, Teriyaki Chicken or Beef, Thai Sweet and Sour Chicken or Mixed Vegetables. The Sushi Bar Lunch, served with choice of soup and garden salad, is another option. These are priced from $8.25 for any two of a variety of sushi rolls to $14.95 for a Sushi & Sashimi Lunch. Asian Station is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday from 12 noon to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Parking, plentiful in the area, is in a small lot next to the restaurant, on the street or in the municipal lot across the street.
