T&J Villaggio Trattoria: Large space with homey feeling By Jananne Abel
he Vitiello and Ruggiero families have cornered the restaurant market along a portion of one of Port Chester’s main thoroughfares. Having taken ownership of their second restaurant at the beginning of last year, the families are making way for the next generation. After one generation successfully ran T&J Pizza & Pasta at 227 Westchester Ave. for over a decade, the next took over ownership of the Village Inn, a longtime Port Chester restaurant and banquet hall next door at 223-225 Westchester, on Jan. 15, 2003.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
T&J Villaggio Trattoria: Large space with homey feeling Continued from page 3R tender and good, but I think I would have preferred the meat cooked in a tomato sauce and served over homemade pasta, an alternate version of this dish offered periodically. Broccoli accompanied the meal. As I later learned, one member of our party chose the restaurant’s signature dish, Pollo Scarpariello ($14.95), chunks of chicken with sweet vinegar and hot cherry peppers in a rosemary garlic sauce topped with thinly sliced potatoes. It can also be made with chicken on the bone upon request. Packing just the right amount of tartness, this entrée is definitely memorable and one I would recommend. Broccoli also came with this dish. Cappellini Grattugiato ($12.95)—bread crumbs, walnuts, anchovies, and argentino reggionito cheese over a bed of angel hair pasta in a garlic and oil sauce—was another excellent choice. The mixture provides an interesting combination of flavors and is among the lighter dishes on the menu. With no room for dessert, our check came to $90. Desserts, however, which range in price from $2.95 to 4.95, include homemade cannoli, amaretto cake, Italian cheesecake and tira misu as well as butterscotch brownies, apple crumb tart, ice cream, sorbet in the fruit rind, spumoni and tortoni. The shell of the cannoli is crunchy and yummy, and the ricotta filling with chocolate chips is sweet and surprisingly light for this traditional Italian dessert. The amaretto cake has nuts in it, a nutty flavor with a mild taste of amaretto and the texture of a moist cake—very satisfying and not too heavy. A large piece is presented with dollops of whipped cream.
A bar menu is also available for those who want to eat at the bar any time of the day or night. It features Cold Antipasto ($7.95), Shrimp Cocktail ($10.95), Fried Calamari ($8.95), Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad ($10.95), a 10-ounce burger with fries ($8.95) and an open face steak sandwich with fries and onion rings ($10.95).
House-sponsored events T&J Villaggio is not open for Thanksgiving or Christmas. However, there will be a special New Year’s Eve celebration in the party room downstairs with a deejay, drinks and dinner included for one price which has not yet been set. Other house-sponsored events in the banquet room have included comedy nights, wine pairing dinners, an Italian dinner dance and a Venison Night. The latter started with 15-20 people at T&J Pizza & Pasta where Jerry Vitiello, an avid hunter, celebrated his catch. It has now grown to 150 people. Besides venison, other game such as quail, pheasant and rabbit are served in addition to hot antipasto, salad and dessert. That will take place Jan. 10 this year and cost $55. A Carnivale celebrating different nationalities featuring interesting costuming and entertainment will be thrown in February. On Sunday, Dec. 19 a holiday brunch offering breakfast and lunch dishes will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at $16 per person. Reservations are recommended for all these events.
Grace Vitiello, the original owner of T&J Pizza & Pasta along with her husband Jerry, is still an important part of the two T&J restaurants. Trading off days between the two eateries, she circulates among the customers to make sure everyone feels at home and satisfied. Here she stands in front of the hostess stand at T&J Villaggio. white wine sauce at $8.95 that New England clam chowder and Lunch and appears on the menu).
