Limited Colombian specialties in a tranquil atmosphere at Aqui Es Santa Fe Café

A

By Jananne Abel

fter a six-month renovation process, Aqui Es Santa Fe Café opened at 32 Broad St.—across from the Port Chester train station—on Sept. 28. Last the location of a grocery store/deli, the space had been vacant for a few years. With the help of family and friends and using money she had saved since immigrating to the United States 10 years ago from Colombia, owner Olga Santos of Mamaroneck designed an inviting, colorcoordinated restaurant with a Christian theme. Santos wanted to create an atmosphere that is different from other restaurants and make it a place where customers feel peace, harmony and warmth. Despite the Christian theme, she said, everybody is welcome. “I love it here; it’s very peaceful,” said regular customer Vanessa Velasquez of Port Chester this week. The food at Santa Fe Café, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is fresh and tasty and everything is homemade. The surroundings are clean and attractive. A very pleasant Jasmir Devia of Port Chester is managing Aqui Es Santa Fe Café during the day, with Santos taking over at night and on weekends. Her 15-year-old son Carlos works every Saturday and is learning all aspects of the business. As business grows, Santos, who owned a restaurant in Colombia and loves to cook, plans to quit her day job as a babysitter in Larchmont, a position she’s held for eight years, and work full-time at Santa Fe Café. “I feel very blessed to have this restaurant,” said Santos, who wants to thank everyone who helped make it possible, from her friends and family who helped renovate, to the Building Department, to the Health Department. Santos herself is warm and welcoming, greeting many customers with a hug rather than a handshake or just a smile.

Color-coordinated decor

Inside and out, the color scheme is beige and orange or yellow and orange—the walls, striped fabric covering the bottom of the front counter and the kitchen serving area, chair seats and fabric covering the restaurant’s one booth. The other seating, totaling 30, is at dark wood tables or two pretty chairs that pull up to the counter. The hand-written menu above the counter is printed in orange and yellow and the ceramic tile floor is beige. Even the garbage can is rust-colored. The restaurant has lots of windows to create a space full of natural light during the day. At night, large round bulbs in the front windows provide a warm glow both inside and out and small silver
