RESTAURANT REVIEW
Chef Antonio: A pretty place with consistent food & service By Jananne Abel
xactly 20 years ago Silvestro Del Peschio of Rye Brook and Mario Randazzo of Yonkers took over Chef Antonio Ristorante in the Rye Neck section of Mamaroneck and made it their own. They didn’t change the name because it was already established in the community, so today people still come in asking for Chef Antonio.
E
“The name doesn’t make you a success; it’s what you do,” said Del Peschio. Within two years the pair, who both came to this country from Italy in their youth, enlarged and totally renovated the kitchen which they considered a necessity. They even installed two skylights in the kitchen which let light and air in and allow heat to escape. Ten years ago they renovated the two dining rooms, and, as the hands-on restaurateurs they are, paid attention to every detail. Comfortable custom-made booths with high backs crafted from cherry wood surrounding green cushions and seats flank the dining room. Tables and chairs that can accommodate bigger parties fill the middle of the room. Two large striking windows in the main dining room, which seats 60, and another in the secondary dining room, which seats 30, are also crafted from attractive wood and broken up by multiple panes. The windows are offset by tasteful short drapes in beige, dark pink, aqua and rust stripes. Tables are covered with white cloths and set with matching cloth napkins and comfortable curved beige leather-look chairs. Walls are covered with custom-made beige wainscoting on the bottom and painted lighter beige on top. They are decorated by insets with wall lights and framed watercolor paintings of flowers, plants, and a scene of the Tuscan countryside in soothing colors. These were painted for the restaurant by former Rye Brook artist Marilyn Bumpas who has since moved away. A portion of the ceiling in each dining room is recessed and painted light blue with white clouds to resemble the sky, com-
pleting the restaurant’s striking décor. “It’s a really nice touch,” said Del Peschio of the recessed ceilings. Randazzo said the fact that at least one and oftentimes both of the partners are on the premises to make sure everything is going right sets the restaurant apart from others. Even when Randazzo, the head chef, isn’t there, his sous chef, who has been around 15 years, knows the recipes and is completely trustworthy, takes over. Del Peschio said he and his partner are committed to the business, have invested in the physical aspects to bring the décor up to date and create a homey appearance and have more than tripled the parking from the original 12 spots. “The fact that we have been here so long is an indication of our ability to provide quality food, great service, ample parking and a nice décor,” said Del Peschio, who takes pride in the fact that there has been a restaurant at this location for over 50 years. Consistent quality is another important aspect of their business. “Mario makes sure we have the same product year in and year out,” said Del Peschio, who manages the reasonably priced Italian restaurant and serves as a most pleasant maitre d’. “That’s why it has worked out for us.” Del Peschio has a good rapport with his customers, making them feel welcome and appreciated. The wait staff is older, experienced, knowledgeable about the menu and many of them feel comfortable joking with their customers. “Our wait staff is a consistent body of people who have worked here for years,” said Del Peschio. Del Peschio, 57, and Randazzo,
Co-owner Silvestro Del Peschio of Rye Brook is the manager and maitre d’ at Chef Antonio Ristorante in the Rye Neck section of Mamaroneck. 47, are related by marriage. Before they decided to buy a place together, they both had worked in their respective positions at other restaurants—Del Peschio as a manager and Randazzo as a chef. These days not many Italian restaurants actually have Italian chefs. Randazzo immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1964 at age 16. He prepares many traditional Italian pasta, chicken, veal and seafood dishes as well as some more unusual specials. We found all the food of high quality but were less impressed by the traditional pastas than by other specialties. The fish and other seafood were particularly fresh, wellprepared and flavorful. Portions are large and you get good value for your money. Chef Antonio attracts all ages but is definitely family-oriented, with lots of children coming in with their parents, especially on Sundays. A children’s menu contains four items priced at $7.50 each for the young crowd. The restaurant has a tremendous amount of repeat customers, said Del Peschio, and now is starting to get the regulars’ kids.
Dinner for three On our first of three recent visits we chose Famous Four— ravioli, lasagna, spaghetti with tomato sauce and breaded veal cutlet with tomato sauce and cheese at $15.95—to get a sample of several traditional Italian dishes. To tell you the truth, we weren’t impressed. All of the flavors blended together and it was hard to distinguish the ravioli from the lasagna, for instance. Also, these two dishes were slightly burnt on top, probably in the warming process. Choosing one dish or the
other would have been better. On the other hand, the Stuffed Shrimp ($17.95), a special, was exquisite. Six good-sized shrimp were stuffed with crabmeat and bread crumbs and served in a garlic butter sauce. The plate was garnished with parsley. The stuffing wasn’t too heavy and the sauce made the shrimp extra tasty and moist. The Grilled Salmon ($17.50) brought a thin, good-sized filet which was delicate and moist— cooked to perfection. A black olive stuffed with a carrot and celery stick garnished the plate. Entrées are served with a nice big house salad made with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red cabbage, red onion and grated carrots with choice of dressing ($1.65 extra for gorgonzola cheese, my favorite, and $2 extra for chopped salad) and a side of sautéed escarole or fried zucchini (crunchy and yummy), French fries or potato croquets, spaghetti, linguini or ziti. The potato croquets are two potato logs, soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside. The meal starts with a basket of Italian bread, with or without sesame seeds, heated and crunchy, as well as fat bread sticks with and without seeds. A glass each of good quality Pinot Grigio and Merlot ($4.75 each) accompanied our meals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Chianti were other choices of wine by the glass. There’s also a wine list with a good assortment of California and Italian reds in all price ranges and a smaller variety of whites. “Most people drink Chianti, said Del Peschio. Espresso ($2.25) automatically brought a bottle of anisette to the Please turn to page 6R

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Chef Antonio: A pretty place with consistent food & service table with the strong coffee. Cannoli ($4.50) shells are homemade from the chef’s mother’s recipe and filled with his own ricotta cheese filling made with chocolate chips and topped with powdered sugar. Other homemade desserts include Italian cheesecake made with ricotta cheese ($4.50), Tiramisu and caramel custard. Our daughter loves the oranges and lemons filled with sorbet which are also available along with a few other dessert choices. For this meal we had just one cannoli, a treat but definitely filling after a big meal. We had ordered a Coffee ala Chef Antonio ($6), which never came, but we tried the concoction on another occasion and highly recommend it. It’s made with Frangelica and another liqueur and topped with whipped cream. Our check came to $76 without tip.
Recommendations After making our own choices from the good-sized menu on three occasions, we asked the chef for his recommendations to mention here as well. He suggested the Veal Osso Bucco ($20.95), a flavorful special which Randazzo said melts in your mouth. The veal is cooked for two hours with carrots, celery, onions and white wine. I’ll be sure to try that the next time I see it on the special menu. Veal Rollatini stuffed with bread crumbs, mozzarella, provolone, parmesan cheese, prosciutto, garlic and spices and served in a brown sauce with mushrooms over homemade fettucini is another chef’s recommendation. While all pasta is not homemade, the fettucini and linguini are. Homemade linguini with shrimp, clams and mussels in a
Co-owner and chef Mario Randazzo of Yonkers trims the fat off a steak in the roomy kitchen at Chef Antonio. light red marechiare sauce, also a special, is another chef’s choice as well as Spaghetti ala Romano ($12.95), made with blended cheese, sausage, peppers and onions which is listed on the menu. Randazzo recommended Chicken ala Contadina ($15.95), a dish I can also vouch for. Made with red vinegar peppers, onions, sausage and sliced potatoes, it is
listed on the menu as having bones in the chicken. However, we were offered the choice of having the dish made with boneless breast of chicken which my husband preferred. Randazzo said it’s really more flavorful made with dark meat on the bone. The sauce is prepared with juice from the peppers, chicken stock and butter. The onions make it sweet.
Continued from page 3R The chef also mentioned Penne Contadina ($14.95) which is on the special list this week. It is made with sausage, chicken breast, and broccoli rabe over penne. Veal Scallopini prepared a variety of ways, all $17.50, is also suggested, especially the Veal Saltimboca ala Florentine made with prosciutto, mozzarella and spinach. For appetizer, we wanted to try the stuffed artichoke ($6.95), a special, on one occasion but, wouldn’t you know, that was the one thing the restaurant was out of, so it must be good. The artichoke is stuffed with fresh bread crumbs, mozzarella, provolone and prosciutto. Other specials carried in recent weeks that sounded interesting are the Chicken Verbena ($15.95), chicken breast layered with prosciutto, asparagus and Swiss cheese in a Marsala sauce as well as Pollo Forestiere, chicken tenders sautéed with garlic, asparagus, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes over rigatoni. On one visit my friend had the Cappellini Ortomare ($16.95), prepared with asparagus, shrimp, scallops and shallots in a light red sauce over angel hair pasta, which she later raved about but I didn’t get a chance to sample. Specials are offered for a week— usually three appetizers, three pastas and 5-6 entrees. “We come up with different ideas,” said Randazzo. In addition to the above, I can also recommend the Sautéed Rainbow Trout ($16.50). A large filleted fish is coated with a special yellow flour that gives it a nice flavor and cooked to perfection with big chunks of garlic. The Linguini with Red Clam Sauce ($14.95) is also excellent. You get plenty of clams in a delicious light red sauce flavored with plenty of garlic served over a good portion of linguini with 3-4 clams in the shell on top. Another offering I loved but had never seen before is the Garlic Bread with Gorgonzola Cheese ($3.50). There’s also Pizza Bread with Gorgonzola ($3.50), made with pizza dough and sauce.
Although they don’t sell a lot, Chef Antonio hasn’t given up pizza ($11 for small, $12 for large with toppings at additional cost). “Why take that away from the customer?” said Del Peschio. “That is part of the consistency. It isn’t below us.”
Lunch Lunch is served Monday through Friday. The menu includes hot and cold appetizers, soups, the breads mentioned above, pasta, seafood and meat entrées, omelets, salads and pizza. Pastas are priced at $7.50 to $8.50, seafood at $8.95 to $9.95, meat dishes from $7.95 to $9.95, omelets at $5.95, salads from $2 to $6.95 and pizzas at $9.50 for a small cheese pie and $10.50 for a large one. Only entrées come with house salad and vegetable of the day, potato of the day or spaghetti. Business Lunch Specials, not to be taken out, are designed to be inexpensive and quick. Everything is priced from $5.95 to $8.95. A limited number of salads, pasta, seafood and meat dishes are offered as well as three different wedges.
Hours, parking, etc. Chef Antonio, located at 551 Halstead Ave. in Mamaroneck, does lots of private parties, mostly in the secondary dining room— just as pretty as the main one— which can accommodate up to 60 people. Chef Antonio is easy to reach from Port Chester and Rye Brook by following Theodore Fremd Avenue in Rye (off of Purchase Street) about five miles, passing through Harrison along the way. Theodore Fremd turns into Halstead Avenue and Chef Antonio is located on your left at the corner of Halstead and Beach Avenue. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Friday 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 4 to 11 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 9:30 p.m. Chef Antonio provides ample parking for over 40 cars in the extended lot behind the restaurant with additional parking on the street.
