Tropica Restaurant: Succulent seafood in a tropical setting T

By Jananne Abel

tin ceiling is painted red while the walls are bright orange and yellow. The ceiling is painted black in the bar and blue in the dining room. A striking mural of a tropical scene complete with ocean, islands, palm trees and bright colors is the focal point in the dining room which has rustic heavy wooden tables and chairs and hard wood floors. Palms sit around the room and potted anthurium, a waxy red flower I associate with Hawaii, sits on the ledge of the window-like opening between the bar and dining room. Candles on the tables add to the atmosphere. The flowers have been replaced by small pumpkins and the opening between the two rooms filled with white spider webs for Halloween. In addition, bats hang at the bar and various ghouls lurk at one side of the dining room. The restaurant seats 54 in both the dining room and bar area. A few tables with comfy aqua benches are situated in the lounge, two of them opposite the fish tank. Pumpkins, a scarecrow, lobsters, starfish, shells and a lobster trap decorate the inviting storefront windows at Tropica, but the restaurant needs an attractive permanent sign rather than the makeshift one that currently hangs out front.

ropica Seafood Restaurant & Raw Bar in Port Chester is a bustling Miami style night spot where a deejay plays salsa, meringue, bachata, reggaeton and more from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. four nights a week. However, before 10 p.m. the 23 ½ North Main St. restaurant serves excellent seafood, nicely presented, in a pleasant atmosphere. I’m just surprised it hasn’t yet caught on. Each time I’ve eaten at Tropica, beginning in the summer on their attractive, tropically-decorated patio, I’ve not been disappointed. Only a filet of fish sandwich ($8.95) was on one occasion light on fish. Otherwise the seafood is fresh, the portions ample, prices reasonable and the preparations range from standard fare to innovative. In addition, it may be the only place in town that offers a long list of cool tropical drinks, some of which can be made without alcohol. They are served in tall hurricane glasses. The house specialty is a Colombia Colada, a delicious blend of banana rum, coconut rum and pineapple juice topped with coconut shavings. A Lava Flow, featuring strawberry purée swirled through a pina colada, is also exceptional, as is the Mojito, made with fresh muddled Dinner for two limes, sugar, rum and fresh mint. Serving Margaritas, Pina Coladas, Tequilas, etc.

The patio behind Tropica, which is enclosed with bamboo, was renovated before the restaurant opened on July 1.

Tropica Restaurant: Succulent seafood in a tropical setting Continued from page 4R for easy eating. A mélange of string beans, broccoli, baby carrots and cauliflower were cooked to perfection and nicely placed on the plate between the two sides of the tail. In addition, the meal consisted of a choice of baked potato or French fries.

Other menu items

Besides those mentioned previously, other appetizers on the menu include clams on the half shell ($4.50 for half a dozen), Bluepoint oysters ($8 for half a dozen), steamers (market price), fried calamari served mild or spicy ($8.95), Mussels Luciano (in white wine and garlic at $7.95), Tropical Mussels (New Zealand green lip mussels topped with chopped onions, tomato and lemon juice at $8.95), Caribbean Fried Shrimp served with a creamy mango sauce ($7.95) and Buffalo Wings (mild, hot or volcanic at $6 for one dozen, $10.50 for two dozen). I can recommend the Tropica Salad ($8.95), made with mango, pineapple, golden papaya and grilled shrimp served over mixed field greens with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Clams stuffed with bacon, bread crumbs, onions, spices and cheese served with lemon chive butter is listed as an entrée at $10.95. Shrimp Scampi over angel hair pasta or rice ($15.95), Grilled Salmon ($13.95), broiled scallops ($15.95), Hawaiian mahi mahi ($18.95), crabby patties ($16.95), stuffed sole ($15.95), Chilean red snapper ($14.95) and Cajun catfish ($14.95) figure among the other entrées. You can also get half-pound burgers for $7.95 or a 16-ounce sirloin steak for $18.95. The lunch menu is much the same with baskets of scallops or shrimp with fries ($8.95) and chicken fingers with fries or onion rings ($6.95) added as well as a teriyaki marinated chicken breast sandwich ($7.95). The chicken fingers come with Tropica’s secret banana dipping sauce. For dessert, sorbets come in four flavors: pineapple, orange, coconut and mango.
