Rye Ridge Deli reincarnated: Bigger, brighter, still pricey A
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
By Jananne Abel
restaurant that has been a staple in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 126 South Ridge St. has recently undergone a transformation, one that co-owner Scott Martin hopes will rejuvenate it and make customers see it in a new light. The restaurant that got its start in this Rye Brook shopping center and gave the name to what has become a triumvirate closed in May for renovation and expansion and reopened right on schedule on Aug. 15. The original Rye Ridge Deli—which currently has three locations by the same name--is now a bigger, brighter space with many more products on display in its glass cases and on its many open shelves. The goal of owners Scott Martin, 30, and his father Harry, 55, is to expand on what has always been known as a kosher style deli. “If we are that, we are kind of limited,” Scott said, emphasizing that at the new deli “there’s something for everybody,” including a lot of different salads. He admits that the deli is known for its thick corned beef and pastrami sandwiches but wants customers to realize it carries lots more than that. While Rye Ridge Deli’s new menu only lists about five more items than the one before the restaurant’s overhaul, Scott said “it was the same for so many years that nobody paid attention to anything anymore. People came in and got what they wanted and left. People were used to getting the same thing and never looked.” Now, besides doubling the display case space, the deli has created boards which hang on the walls above the front counter and deli cases spelling out the many varieties of sandwiches, salads, cold cuts, cheeses, etc. available to make it easier for customers placing orders to go. “The whole place needed to be revived,” Scott said. “So far we’re getting a positive reaction to the change.” And I must admit it was the expansion that attracted me once again to Rye Ridge Deli—where over the years I had mainly ordered the snappy hot dogs, square knishes and two kinds of pickles to go. I was never really interested in eating in because it seemed like a rather dreary place for old folks.
The spacious new dining room at Rye Ridge Deli in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center. Whether or not my previous perception was correct, several recent visits have shown that in its new carnation quite a wide range of ages actually eat at Rye Ridge Deli. Yes, there’s a good share of older people, but families, mothers with young children and even teenagers frequent the place.
Something for everyone
The menu is large, and besides its 50 sandwiches, another 20 overstuffed combination sandwiches and five hot open sandwiches, features wraps, appetizers, soups, smoked fish platters, house specialties, salad platters, 22 entrée salads, half pound burgers (beef, turkey or garden), fried specialties, beef, poultry and fish dinners, dairy delicacies, vegetarian delights and a cornucopia of breakfast foods. Most of the latter are available from morning till night. So, as at a diner, there’s really something for everybody. And many things on the menu you won’t find anyplace else around: i.e. turkey bacon, challah bread French toast, a pastrami burger, a tongue omelet, and scrambled eggs, lox and onions. And where else do you
Pablo Peralta of Port Chester, one of Rye Ridge Deli’s managers, puts a hot dog in a bun behind the counter.
have a choice of 17 different cheeses to add to your sandwich or use by themselves to make a sandwich. The sandwiches, however, are by no means inexpensive. Yes, they’re big, and they’re tasty, but be prepared to spend at least $8 and as much as $13, unless you’re going for some variety of cheese sandwich in which case you can get by for $6. And keep in mind that extras can add up. For example, certain choices of bread (8 grain, rolls, heros, bagels, croissants, wraps, pita, sourdough and ciabatta) are 50 cents, adding cheese or tomato costs 50 cents, and avocado, bacon or roasted peppers cost an additional $1. One of the over-stuffed combination sandwiches—The Dr. Shuster—is named for a doctor who always ordered turkey, pastrami, roast beef, cole slaw and Russian dressing ($10.99). Half sandwiches are available for half price plus $1. Or, if you like variety, you can get a cup of soup, tossed salad and half a sandwich for $11.99, $2 more if you order a combo or tongue sandwich. The many salads and salad platters could provide different meals for months. The gourmet salad platters allow customers to sample one salad for $5.99, two for $8.99 or three served over tossed greens with your choice of dressing for $11.99. Examples of gourmet salads, all available for purchase from the deli case by the pound, are artichoke and basil, broccoli, tomato and mushrooms, couscous, cucumber dill, penne balsamic and sesame noodles. Examples of the entrée salads, which range in price from $11.99 to $18.99, are Rye Ridge Thai Salad ($16.99), The Avante Garde made with pecans, grilled shrimp, pears, and goat cheese with mesclun greens ($16.99) and Taco Salad ($12.99). Regular salad platters, all $11.99, include, for example, gefilte fish with horseradish, chicken salad, tuna salad, shrimp salad and chopped chicken liver. They are served with potato salad, cole slaw, lettuce and tomato. While the menu hasn’t changed much, a new aspect of the business is the cakes and pies, which are beautifully displayed in the front case just inside the door. A large variety of whole cheesecakes, mousse cakes, chocolate cakes, specialty cakes and pies are available to take home, or you can order a slice to go with your meal. Martin said the brownie cheesecake and chocolate mousse supreme are the most popular desserts. Give them a try. I wouldn’t recommend the only two I’ve tasted—coconut layer cake
and tiramisu. Both were disappointingly dry. Rye Ridge Deli also has a large catering menu.
Bright new décor
Harry Martin, who bought Rye Ridge Deli from previous owners Joe Witkin and Sam Small in 1983, had wanted to expand his restaurant into the space next door for years, said his son, but was never able to get it because there was always some other store there. “We were completely out of space,” Scott Martin said. “We didn’t have space to merchandise all the products we sell in our other stores.” The other stores are in Stamford and Fairfield, Conn., the Stamford location having opened in 1997 and Fairfield in 2001. The expansion, which included a total gutting of the space, added 800 square feet to the restaurant, increased seating by 30 so it can now accommodate 100, doubled the deli case from 12 to 24 feet, increased the size of the kitchen and provided space for shelving to display healthy snacks, coffees and chocolate covered pretzels. The pretzels, which come in white and dark chocolate, covered with sprinkles, Reese’s Pieces, coconut or crushed nuts, are big sellers, Martin said. Windows were installed on the side of the restaurant to brighten up the seating area, and even the front windows, which had previously provided the only natural light, appear larger. “It’s like a fight at lunchtime for those seats [near the windows],” Martin said. Besides the artwork on the walls, everything is brand new, from the beige ceramic tile floor, beige tile, white chair rail and beige wallpaper on the walls, beige and green booths lining the walls and tables with wooden chairs and green vinyl seats filling the rest of the l-shaped dining room. A big round clock figures prominently on the back wall of the restaurant, and other walls boast festive artwork featuring replicas of Rye Ridge Deli. For example, there’s a Charles Fazzino 3-D painting with Rye Ridge Deli in it, another wooden wall hanging depicting Rye Ridge Deli and a blimp above it with lettering reading “New York Loves Rye Ridge Deli,” a painting of RRD in green, blue and orange, each letter a different color, and a vest behind glass hand painted with Rye Ridge Deli next to another shop.
I visited Rye Ridge Deli at all times of the day and night to take in breakfast, lunch and dinner and always found the surroundings pleasant, the service adequate--sometimes better than others--and the food good but not great for the money. Angie Williams of Rye Brook is a fixture, having worked at Rye Ridge Deli since 1972, the year it opened under the previous ownership, so if she’s your waitress, you can be sure to have good service. With his large presence, longtime manager Miguel Hernandez of New Rochelle seems to have everything under control. More recently I’ve met Pablo Peralta of Port Chester, another manager, who has a pleasant way about him. For breakfast, my husband and I decided to go for two items previously mentioned that you can’t get many places, if anyplace else in the vicinity. My choice, and a good one, was the challah bread French toast ($5.50), which brought three pieces of the thick bread dipped in batter, fried, cut into six triangles and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Add butter and you don’t need anything else. But if you choose, there’s syrup, of course. A side of bacon ($2.99) brought a good number of crunchy strips clumped together but nonetheless delicious. My husband selected the scrambled eggs, lox and onions ($8.99) with rye toast, something I’d never tried but can see why you’d go for if you like the smoky and slightly fishy taste of lox. This version had chunks of lox and plenty of it. The meal came with tasty home fries flavored with small bits of green pepper. With two coffees ($1.75 each), our check totaled $23.06. Rye Ridge Deli is a good place for breakfast because it does offer so many items you can’t get elsewhere—lots of unusual omelets like bologna, corned beef, sturgeon, and farmer’s market (turkey, bacon, broccoli, mushrooms and salsa), for instance, besides all the smoked fish platters that come with a bagel and cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, cole slaw and potato salad (salads only served after 11 a.m.), Hawaiian pancakes, pecan or walnut waffles, turkey bacon and turkey sausage as well as an assortment of muffins.
Soup and sandwich
One of the pleasures of eating at Rye Ridge Deli for lunch or dinner is the bowl of delicious half sour and sour pickles you get. My husband and I couldn’t eat lunch at Rye Ridge Deli without experiencing the matzoh ball soup ($3.99 for a bowl). However, there was a communication problem and we got the Consommé with Matzoh Ball rather than the Rye Ridge Homestyle Chicken Noodle Matzoh Ball Soup ($4.99) we had hoped for. In any case, the broth was appetizing and the matzoh ball large and light, so the experience was a satisfying one. The French Onion Soup ($3.99) could also be considered a comfort food—featuring a crock filled with large pieces of bread in a mediumcolored broth topped with a good amount of stringy melted cheese. The Curried Chicken Salad on a flaky croissant ($7.99 and an extra 50 cents for the croissant) had a slight taste of cinnamon, a medium taste of curry and made a delightful sandwich. The Roast Beef Sandwich on rye ($8.50) provided several large slices Please turn to page 6R

Restaurant review
Rye Ridge Deli reincarnated Continued from page 4R of lean roast beef rolled over on the bread to create a fairly thick mound—more than I could eat in a sitting but just enough for my husband. Both sandwiches came with fresh-tasting cole slaw. An Orangina added $2.99 to the tab, which amounted to $30.02. For both lunch and breakfast, we especially enjoyed sitting toward the front of the restaurant because of the brightness factor—plenty of sunshine streaming in the windows.

ously described as disappointingly dry. Next time I’d try one of the pies (key lime, apple, peach, pumpkin in season and pecan, to name a few). There’s also a whole list of Haagen Dazs ice cream flavors ($3.99 for small cup or cone, $4.99 for large version of either), rice or chocolate pudding ($3.99), Jello ($3.50), fresh fruit salad ($3.99), large cookies ($2.50), pound cakes ($2.50), brownies ($2.99), sundaes ($4.99), milk shakes, ice cream sodas or root beer floats (all $4.50).
