Churrascaria Copacabana: An upscale Brazilian steakhouse P By Jananne Abel

antanal, a longstanding Brazilian restaurant on Port Chester’s North Main Street, closed for renovations this summer, only to reopen on Sept. 27 under a new name, new ownership and with a classy new interior. Churrascaria Copacabana, billed as a Brazilian steakhouse, specializes in South American style rotisserie cooking and rodizio service. This cooking and service was also offered at Pantanal but was only one of many Brazilian specialties on the menu. Now it’s pretty much the only choice.

Servers come to your table with knives and skewers on which are speared various kinds of meat. In fact, you get a random parade of 11 different meats on skewers which are pulled or sliced off the skewer onto your plate. With your meal, priced at $29.95, comes a lovely, fresh salad bar plus side dishes served at your table. So it’s a literal feast. The menu describes the origins of this type of cooking and eating which goes back to the fireside roasts of the gauchos of southern Brazil. Immigrants from Germany and Italy who settled there, in a land of plenty, in the early 1900s celebrated their good fortune with a feast twice a year. The ranchers--or gauchos--hosted the thanksgiving feast of fresh fruits and vegetables, beef, chicken, pork and fish cooked over an open fire. The gauchos presented the meats still on the skewer and carved them for each person individually. So going to Churrascaria Copacabana is much like enjoying a Thanksgiving feast: you have to be hungry and ready to eat lots of food. If you’re not, you won’t get your money’s worth. Besides the meat, there is another choice on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You can get grilled salmon with the same salad bar and sides for the same $29.95. On weekdays you can opt for the salad bar alone for $16.95. Or you can order a few appetizers in the bar and still not go home hungry. If you’re not up to eating 11 different meats, you can go for lunch and get only six plus the salad bar and sides for $16.95. If you’ve been to Pantanal, you will notice a striking change of décor at Copacabana. And even if you haven’t, you’ll be taken by the lovely surroundings. Co-

pacabana is decidedly more upscale and remarkable. As with any new restaurant, there are still some kinks to be worked out, including redoing the menu which was printed hurriedly and contains some serious errors (including the wrong address). However, the overall dining experience at Copacabana is a pleasant one. If you’re a slow eater like me, you’ll have to tell the passadors or meat servers to bring the selections of meat at a slower rate than they’re used to or you will feel rushed and overwhelmed. And slowing them down is perfectly acceptable. Robert Luiso of Harrison is the owner of Churrascaria Copacabana. The 36-year-old has experience in the food industry, first in baking and then in restaurants and bars. He also owns two Italian restaurants, both called Al Dente, in Harrison and Rye. The fact that the restaurant at this 29-31 North Main St. location was for sale was brought to his attention by a Brazilian fellow who used to work for him. “I knew Port Chester was changing,” he said, and visited the site. “The place needed updating,” he said. “Being that Port Chester is revitalizing itself, I decided to take it to the next level and go high end.” He hired Brazilian-born John Freitas, 42, who previously worked at Ruby’s Oyster Bar in Rye and Elm Street Oyster House in Greenwich, as his manager. Freitas, who lives in Byram, is a very pleasant man who came to the United States from Pocos de Caldas 22 years ago. Besides Freitas, Luiso said all of the waiters and kitchen staff speak Portuguese. They also speak English, some better than others. Both the owner and manager have been on premises the three times I visited.

Churrascaria Copacabana, a Brazilian steakhouse, is located at 29-31 North Main St.

Server Jorge Adanda slices some meat off a skewer for customer Emilia Nuccio of Rye this week at Churrascaria Copacabana, Port Chester’s newest restaurant.

Dinner for two

Going into this new restaurant for the first time at 9:30 p.m. on a weeknight not knowing what to expect, my husband and I almost left when we found out there was only one choice. We didn’t know if we could eat that much. But we decided to go for it. We first enjoyed the salad bar which boasted a fresh selection of greens, hearts of palm, sushi, green been salad, chicken salad, Brazilian potato salad, pasta salad, Portobello mushrooms, tomato and mozzarella and shrimp cocktail. Freitas said new items may be added from time to time. You turn over a card on your table to signal you’re ready for the meat service to begin. The skewers kept coming with new meats faster than I could eat them. I wasn’t persistent enough when I asked the servers to slow down. Nonetheless, I sampled most of them—except the leg of lamb. It’s not my favorite meat and there were so many others: top sirloin (my favorite), flank steak, skirt steak, prime rib, beef ribs, all from different parts of the cow; barbecue chicken, pork loin, filet mignon wrapped in bacon, turkey wrapped in bacon and Brazilian sausage (yummy). A 12th meat—barbecued baby back ribs—may be added on weekends. When the meat service begins, the sides also come: mashed potatoes, white rice, broccoli, fried bananas (they were delicious), black beans, yucca flour and vinaigrette. I didn’t know what to do with the yucca flour, tried putting it on one of the meats and didn’t find it appealing. I later learned that you’re supposed to mix the flour

and vinaigrette and put the mixture on the meat. I’ll try that next time. A glass of Merlot ($8) went perfectly with the meal. Although I was full, I took home the meat left on my plate and decided to have a look at the dessert cart. The coconut flan ($6) was dense but creamy. I managed to eat most of it. Some of the other desserts on the cart included chocolate flan, chocolate mousse and tira misu. Our check totaled $83.85.

Appetizers for four

On another visit our party of four sat in the bar where there are four high square tables with white cloths located across from the bar itself. Here or on the large deck on the Abendroth Avenue side of the restaurant you can order appetizers or the salad bar. I selected a Caipitini, a drink like a mojito made with Leblon Cachaca, slices of lime and sugar with a splash of Sprite in a sugar rimmed glass ($8). Others in our party opted for White Russians ($7 each) and scotch and soda ($8 each). The appetizer menu is in flux. So we experimented a bit. The Mixed Barbecue ($15), which will remain a standard, is a sampler of the meats served rodizio style in the dining room. Each was delicious, the portion was large, and the selection satisfied everyone in our party, those who ate red meat and those who didn’t. The garlic and oil shrimp ($9), served Please turn to page 6R

Churrascaria Copacabana: An upscale Brazilian steakhouse

Décor

Churrascaria Copacabana occupies a large space nicely broken up into smaller sections: the bar at the front of the restaurant off Main Street which seats 30, lounge next door which seats 30, the main dining room straight ahead off the bar which seats 64 and a party room next door which can be used for overflow crowds on weekends.

Hours, parking, etc.

Lunch is served from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, dinner from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, 12 noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is closed Monday. Parking is on the street, in a small private lot at the back of the restaurant or in the marina parking lot off Abendroth Avenue. Considering no sign yet exists on the Abendroth Avenue side of the restaurant and advertising has been strictly by word of mouth, Freitas said business has been good so far. Lunch just started this week.

It also seats 64. A large deck at the back of the restaurant provides additional seating in the warm weather. Hardwood floors throughout give the space a continuity and richness. There’s a pretty wooden bar as you enter where you sit at tall wooden stools with deep red seats. The back of the bar is brick with wine holders and wooden shelves to hold the liquors. Across from the bar four tall square tables with white cloths each seat four at stools identical to those that pull up to the bar. The comfortable lounge next door features brown suede cloth couches and stools and tall globed candles on square dark marble tables. Freitas said in the future the restaurant may offer light jazz—very low key--in this space. The intent is to require a certain dress code and decorum in the bar and lounge to maintain its sophisticated atmosphere. The spacious main dining room has orange sponge-painted walls, sconce style fixtures on the walls, and tables with white cloths accented by magenta napkins. Pretty wooden hatched back chairs have deep red seats. Wood surrounds the salad bar at the back of the room which is decorated with autumn leaves. An attractive door with glass panes leads to the private dining room next door. It features red brick, brown stucco and wood-paneled walls enclosing the same tables and chairs. The restaurant is currently decorated for Halloween with spider webs, spiders, pumpkins, witches and scary heads. Tropical plants and dried flowers in vases provide additional ornamentation.

Continued from page 5R with lemon, also brought a large portion of medium-sized shrimp, but it lacked much garlic taste. I’m told you can request more garlic, and I’ll do that next time. The price of this appetizer is expected to increase to $10 when the next menu is printed. Frango a passarinho ($8), literally translated as bird-style chicken, brought small pieces of chicken on the bone and onions sautéed in garlic and oil. The texture was not to my liking although others in my party disagreed. Freitas said the preparation of this dish will be changing to be more authentic and the price could increase to $10. Fried yucca and Brazilian sausage will remain on the menu at an increased price of $10. Pastel (pastry) filled with cheese and ground beef will be added as well as chicken hearts sautéed or grilled. The fried calamari and the crabmeat pastry, which weren’t available when we visited, will be removed. Besides the three appetizers, I chose chocolate flan with whipped cream and coconut ($6), dense and creamy like the coconut variety, for dessert. Two coffees rounded out our check and brought the tab to $94.32. Copacabana offers other martinis and cocktails, four Brazilian beers and a good selection of wines by the glass and bottle. The wine list features white, red and rosé wines from California, Washington, Oregon, Italy, Australia, Portugal, Argentina, Spain and Germany as well as Champagne in the $25 to $85 range. Freitas is developing a list of premium wines which will be priced from $100 to $300 a bottle. These alcoholic beverages can be consumed at the bar, in the dining room or in the comfortable, romantic candlelit lounge entered through a doorway off the bar. The latter, I’m told, is strictly for late night cocktails.
