Port Chester welcomes two major new eateries

he openings of two eagerly-awaited restaurants—Tarry Lodge and Applebee’s—in Port Chester happened to coincide this month. The pizzeria-trattoria Tarry Lodge opened to the public on Oct. 15 with a press opening two days later and Applebee’s, part of the largest casual dining chain in the world, opened to the public Monday, Oct. 20 following a grand opening celebration for invited guests the Saturday before. These two eating establishments typify the wide spectrum of restaurants that coexist in the 2½-squaremile village that has been dubbed “the restaurant capital of Westchester.” years. Tarry Lodge, a Port Chester tradition, was known for its thincrusted, 10-inch pan pizzas and Italian nachos. It was established as an eatery in 1906, as noted in script on the outside of the olive green stucco building with white wood trim and brown awnings.

Frank’s Steaks to host benefit for veterans
By Michael Scott Leonard To Ken DeNicola, “Support the Troops” is more than a slogan. It’s a call to arms. That’s why DeNicola, owner of Frank’s Steaks at 275 S. Ridge St. in Rye Brook, will host a Halloween benefit from 8 to 11 p.m. on behalf of the Florence and Robert A. Rosen Family Wellness Center for Law Enforcement and the Military, which provides free mental health services to military veterans and law enforcement personnel. For a suggested donation of $20, the Oct. 31 costume party will feature music, an open bar from 10 to 11 p.m., hot snacks throughout the evening and a lively atmosphere. “I wanted to do something soon,” DeNicola said during a recent telephone interview. “Christmas is a little too far away.” The event came together about six weeks ago, after DeNicola got wind of the Rosen Center through his publicist while looking into causes worthy of his fundraising efforts. The more research he did, the more convinced he became that he had found his next charity beneficiary. “I like to get involved with lots of different charities, lots of different things,” DeNicola said. “If something appeals to me, I try to do something to help out. And what the Rosens are doing for veterans and their families—it’s a really nice thing. “I was excited to do it,” he added. The Rosen Center is the brainchild of the eponymous Rear Admiral Robert A. Rosen (Ret.), a 31-year veteran of the New York Air National Guard, the Naval Reserve and several other military branches. Admiral Rosen, now in his 50th year of military service, currently acts as special adviser to the state adjutant general, the governor’s naval aide and a senior adviser to the State Senate. In 2005, Admiral Rosen, a longtime trustee of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and its predecessor, Long Island Jewish Hospital, observed the prohibitive waitlists veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan faced at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals earmarked for their care. He and his wife, Florence, decided they could no longer stand on the sidelines. He noticed that the system was particularly difficult to navigate for those suffering from what he calls “the invisible wounds of war”—emotional or psychological conditions that are sometimes given low priority or, worse, not covered at all. “When we saw our veterans coming back and having to wait to get care from the VA or not having sufficient coverage or the VA not being able to care for the family problems that occurred, we stepped into the breach,” Admiral Rosen said when reached by phone. “We don’t see ourselves as competitors of the VA—they’re the first responders, so to speak. We view ourselves as an ally. “We just want to develop a center of excellence to help our government,” he added. “We can’t always just point the finger. At some point, we have to step up and do what we can on our own.” New York State has more than a million veterans—with 300,000 on Long Island alone—many of whose families have been strained to the breaking point by the exigencies of prolonged deployment and the stress-related afflictions with which they return from the battlefield. In addition to the most notorious psychological war wound, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, combat veterans and their families commonly suffer from alcohol and substance abuse, eating and sleeping disorders, matrimonial difficulties, and many other psychological and emotional complications that can be harder to label or quantify quite as neatly. “Veterans can have trouble reacclimating when they come back,” Admiral Rosen said. “Job-related problems are common after being under such enormous stress, which is remarkable and unusual for these type of people from civilian life—reservists and National Guard people” who may never have expected to see combat. “We know the VA is doing everything it possibly can, but only about half of veterans who have reported [mental illnesses]
have actually sought treatment,” he said. “We thought this would be a wonderful community-outreach program for these very special people, the ones who go into harm’s way to protect and preserve everything we hold dear,” he added. In conjunction with the North ShoreLong Island Jewish Health System, and with the help of such friends and colleagues as Dr. Lawrence Scherr, former chairman of medicine at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Admiral and Mrs. Rosen set out to establish a first-in-the-nation center designed to treat those “invisible” wounds. “With some effort on our part, we put together a very prestigious board of respected medical advisers and inaugurated the Family Wellness Center,” Admiral
Rosen said. “The Health System has been a major sponsor, and also the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation and other donors. It’s a private-public joint outreach program run by a not-for-profit medical institution to do something to help this wonderful group of soldiers.” Admiral Rosen describes the Rosen Center as “booming,” in large part because it has the resources of the Health System— some 15 hospitals, 8,000 doctors and almost 40,000 total employees—at its disposal. To date, the center has offered more than 1,200 clinical hours of treatment and reached more than 1,600 additional patients through seminars, outreach programs, crisis counseling, offsite clinics and direct visits to military bases and facilities, as well as area police stations. The center’s services are free and
public, according to Admiral Rosen. “We never turn anyone away,” he said. Admiral Rosen lauded DeNicola’s initiative in putting together the upcoming Frank’s Steaks benefit. “I think he wanted to do something for the veterans, and he’s doing it on his own, organizing it pretty much on his own, and we’re very grateful,” Admiral Rosen said. “We can’t do enough. There’s such a great need today. “It’s wonderful that he’s making the public aware,” he said. For more information on the Florence and Robert A. Rosen Family Wellness Center for Law Enforcement and the Military, visit nslij.com/body.cfm?id=8420 on the Web, e-mail rosencenter@nshs.edu or call (516) 562-3260.
