RESTAURANT REVIEW
Restaurants coming, going, changing hands and expanding By Jananne Abel
T
he Port Chester and Rye Brook restaurant scene, constantly in flux, is bustling at this point, even in a down economy. Restaurants are coming, going, changing hands and expanding.
The newest restaurant in town is:
La Crêperie Café 604 North Main Street Port Chester 934-0026 La Crêperie Café is located within Albert Florist, the flower shop in the Cumberland Farms plaza near the Port Chester/ Greenwich border. It opened Oct. 8. The tiny crêperie, which at the moment only has five seats at a 3-sided counter made of raw shellacked wood, is bright, cozy and suitably adorned with green plants. The walls are brownish orange with facts about coffee such as “Worldwide more than 1400 million cups of coffee are drunk every day” handwritten in black. There are also newspapers for reading in a rack on the wall. Chairs have wooden seats and black metal backs with a coffee cup cutout design. About two dozen varieties of crêpes—both sweet and savory—are made on two griddles in front of you if you care to stand and watch. The choices are written on a blackboard above the glass counter where a wooden cock is perched. You can order them by number. I sampled the smoked salmon, gruyere, capers, cucumber and fresh dill variety ($10) as well as grilled organic chicken, roasted red peppers, avocado, tomato and smoked mozzarella ($11), each wrapped in a buckwheat crêpe and served on a rectangular white plate with lightly dressed salad greens on either side. Both were exceptional. You can create your own savory crêpe for $9 with three of the items included in any of those on the menu or $11 with four. For dessert, my partner and I sampled two sweet crêpes: sugar, butter and cinnamon ($3.50) and berries with chocolate sauce ($8). These are made with wheat rather than buckwheat flour, the first variety a staple in France, albeit without the cinnamon. The second featured strawberries and raspberries topped with chocolate sauce applied in a checkerboard design and powdered sugar, with whipped cream on the side. Both were delectable. You can create your own sweet crêpe for $7 with two items or $9 with three.
Everything is made and chopped to order, so service is pretty slow right now. Don’t go if you’re in a rush. Fitting for a café, to drink there are two sizes of cappuccino, caffe latte (both $2.50 or $3.50), café mocha ($3 or $4), yummy hot chocolate topped with shaved dark chocolate ($1.50 or $2.50) and steamed apple cider ($2 or $3) as well as cold drinks such as juices, Perrier, Orangina and soda. George and Magdalena Brezany of Norwalk, who hail from a town near Bratislava in Slovakia, took over the flower shop three years ago with the idea of using one room for a crêperie. It took a long time to get all the necessary approvals to make it happen and then to get the crêperie up and running. They plan to add a table just outside the confines of the room that is now the crêperie and tables outside next spring. “We had experience in our country with crêpes and there were not any places like this around here,” said George last weekend. He said whenever he did see a crêperie, there was always a line. George was cooking up a pot of French onion soup which wasn’t ready when I was there, but he said he’s had a lot of good response to it and therefore plans to continue offering it for a while. The onion soup is a daily special scrawled on a tiny chalkboard held by a ceramic chef sitting on the counter opposite the rooster. I returned the next day for the onion soup ($4.50), which was fabulous. George placed a slice of French bread on the bottom of the bowl, covered it with the delicious, perfectly seasoned, oniony broth and topped it with gruyere cheese. George had never made crêpes on a griddle, only in a pan, before opening Le Crêperie Café. Of the food, he said: “It’s fresh, you can see what you’re eating, it’s made in front of you and I think it tastes good.” He added, “It’s different. You have to have variations in your meals.” Although there’s French music playing in the background, George said he only knows a few words of French. La Crêperie Café has a pretty navy and yellow awning out front which is visible as you head down Putnam Avenue toward the Post Road on your

It is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Alba’s Ristorante 400 North Main Street Port Chester 937-2236 While many restaurants are complaining about business due to the dismal economy, Alba’s Ristorante at 400 North Main St. is at the tail end of a large expansion and renovation. It is looking very impressive from the outside, much like an inn. The expansion included a two-story addition featuring a new 1,200-square-foot party room seating 70 on the first floor
and offices on the second, an enlarged parking lot with 60 as opposed to 30-some-odd spaces and an overall upgrade to the exterior of the building and site. Two houses were razed to make way for the expanded parking lot. “Everything has been changed fully, inside and out,” said head chef/co-owner Ray Balidemaj. There are now two private dining rooms, one seating 50 and one seating 70, which could be combined with the main dining room to accommodate 170 people at one time. The rooms can be divided for private parties or left open for dining. Alba’s, which features fine Northern Italian cuisine, was closed for six weeks beginning Aug. 4 for the renovation but
has since been open while the job continued. Only exterior work remains, and that should be completed in about three weeks. “I wanted to expand my business,” said Balidemaj as the reason for the addition and renovation at this time. “We’ve been doing well now for almost 18 years.” Alba’s previously did a major expansion and renovation in 1999.

Restaurants coming, going, changing hands and expanding Pizza & Pasta at 199 South Regent St. at the end of April. Although he knew Frank Ferraro, the previous owner, he is not related. Arrosto
25 South Regent Street Port Chester 939-7200 A new, long-awaited urban Italian restaurant will finally be opening at 25 South Regent St. in mid-November. Tony Longo, owner of Park Deli in Port Chester, and restaurateur Godfrey Polistina, former owner and founder of Carmine’s and Virgil’s in New York City, will be the managing partners of Arrosto, while chef Richard Corbo, formerly from Ducca in San Francisco, will now be heading up the kitchen. Shea Gallante, who came from New York City’s Cru, Eddie Ferraro assumed ownership Bouley and Felidia, of Ferraro’s Pizza & Pasta at 199 was to have been the South Regent St. at the end of April. chef and, while he place or made the commitment helped develop the menu, he to change careers when this has since moved to Ciano, pizzeria with his name on it a new restaurant opening in became available. The food at Arrosto, which The new Ferraro’s makes means “in preparation,” will the same delicious Grandma’s be Italian with an emphasis on Pizza—super thin, crispy, farm to table, utilizing fresh Sicilian-style pizza with ingredients. The menu will seasoned plum tomatoes, fresh include Italian specialties such mozzarella, and light garlic— as pastas and other items that the previous Ferraro’s was are familiar with a twist on the known for ($16.99) and has use of flavors, ingredients and most of the same dinners and recipes. As advertised on the salads, said Eddie.
