RESTAURANT REVIEW
BURGER MANIA Three new burger restaurants open in town
T
BY JANANNE ABEL
his part of the country is quickly catching up with California where there are a multitude of burger chains—and I don’t mean McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s. Here in Rye Town, most people are aware that two new long-awaited burger places have opened in the past month, both in Rye Brook. But many probably don’t know that a third popped up without warning in Port Chester. I’ve tried all of them more than once and have come to the conclusion that of the three, there’s a healthy option, a stylish choice and an economical alternative. And you can’t go wrong with any of them. Vincent Corso, co-owner of Westchester Burger Co. in the Washington Park Plaza at 275 South Ridge St., said he and his brother-in-law and partner Angelo Difeo believe that burgers are America’s favorite food. That being the case, there are plenty of days in the week to try all three burger joints. You can go to Westchester Burger on Monday, Elevation Burger, located in the Rye Ridge North Shopping Center at 176 South Ridge St., on Wednesday, and D’Licias Café, situated in the heart of Port Chester at 118 Westchester Ave., on Friday.
D’Licias Café
D’Licias, originally billed as The Signature Burger Home, opened on Sept. 17 with a full list of burgers as well as other American and Latin specialties. Seemingly not wanting to limit the restaurant’s scope to burgers in an effort to find its customer base, Mexican-born owners Pedro Najera and Azael Vargas of Manhattan quickly changed
their unique burgers and fries at reasonable prices caught on with the many nationalities that frequent downtown Port Chester. However, I guess it can’t hurt. D’Licias is a cute little restaurant located in the vicinity of the train station which has been spruced up with mirrors lining each wall, bright red banquettes and blond wood tables and chairs. On my first visit there was a language barrier with the waiter until Vargas came out of kitchen to take my party’s order. Usually, however, a waiter or waitress is on duty who speaks English. The menu is clearly printed in both English and Spanish. Najera said he and his partner, who is the chef, wanted to bring Latino flavor mixed with North American food to Port Chester by opening this eatery. They also have a TexMex restaurant in Manhattan called Jasmin Express. D’Licias serves 4-ounce and 8-ounce hamburgers made with 85% lean meat; however, the smaller ones appear on the menu. I’ve sampled both the Aztec burger ($8.75) and the Mexican burger ($7.50) and can recommend each of them. First of all, they are beautifully presented open-faced on the plate with fresh ingredients and look delicious. The Aztec burger is topped with pepper jack cheese and huitlacoche sauce, common in California but not in these parts. It is a fungus (like a mushroom) that grows naturally on ears of corn and tastes much like mushrooms, with a mild flavor. All burgers are also topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles and are served on brioche rolls. They come

Both combinations had exceptional flavor and tasted fresh and delicious. Other burgers on the menu include D’Licias ($5.95 + $1 each to add your choice of cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, American or bleu cheese, bacon, caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms), Chili Cheese ($6.95), Jalapeno ($6.95) with pickle, jalapeno peppers and cheddar cheese, Caribbean ($7.25) with queso frito served with tostones (fried plantains) and mango sauce, The Gaucho ($6.95) topped with mozzarella cheese and chimichurri sauce, Hawaiian ($7.50) topped with grilled pineapple, ham, red onion and mozzarella cheese, Cuban ($8.75) made with chicken breast, beef frankfurter and Swiss cheese, Colombian ($8.25) topped with pineapple sauce, crusted potato chips and mozzarella cheese, Manhattan ($8.25) topped with bacon, bleu cheese and special sauce, Port Chester ($8.50) topped with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized mushrooms and American cheese, Turkey ($5.95 + $1 each to add your choice of cheese, bacon, caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms) and Veggie ($7.25). Prices have actually been lowered since D’Licias opened. “We would like for everyone to enjoy our food,” said Najera. Hours are 11 am. to 12 midnight (sometimes they close a little earlier) Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. I’m always looking for places to eat late at night, so these hours appeal to me. Parking is on the street or in the metered lot on New Broad Street. At night and on weekends or holidays, you can park in the Metro-North commuter lot on Broad Street for free.
Westchester Burger Co.
Harrison residents Vincent Corso and Angelo Difeo opened their second Westchester Burger Co. less than a week later on Sept. 22 where the pricey Frank’s Steaks had previously
where needed. Graziela’s Italian restaurant, which has been in business in White Plains for 17 years, is also part of their portfolio. Corso said they wanted to be able to accommodate families on a larger scale at this location than they can in White Plains which is one-third the size. While D’Licias is the most economical of the three new burger places, Westchester Burger is the most stylish. It is a full-fledged restaurant and bar and the only one that serves alcohol. WBC offers “the ultimate burger experience, fine dining between the buns,” as the menu defines it—a casual yet pleasurable dining experience. Corso said he and Difeo had the challenge of converting a steakhouse into a burger joint. They wanted to make it more casual, a place where you don’t have to dress up. So they took out the carpeting and booths in the main dining room in favor of wooden tables and chairs with comfortable seats and a blond wood floor. It still has the same large stone fireplace, wood accents, wooden blinds at

RESTAURANT REVIEW
BURGER MANIA both seemed to really enjoy their job). Let’s focus on the burgers, however. There are 20. They start with the Original WBC Burger ($14), 10 ounces of “certified angus beef” topped with smoked mozzarella, beefsteak tomato, pickles, frisée and a pale orange creamy WBC sauce on a brioche bun. It looks gorgeous on the plate with a miniature pickle, black olive and grape tomato on a large wooden pick sticking out of it. And it tasted as good as it looked, cooked perfectly medium—a pale pink—as ordered. Unless upgraded for $1.50 to $2 extra, burgers come with skinny French fries (perfectly tasty) in an adorable mini fry basket. Upgrades include sweet potato waffle fries with maple dipping sauce, Yukon gold potato wedges, crispy onion rings or fried mash potato sticks. Or you can substitute a house salad at no extra cost. The Tex-Mex burger ($14 for 8 ounces of angus beef, guacamole, salsa, pickled onion, queso fresco and tortillas “crunchified” on a brioche bun) proved a pleasantly savory and crunchy experience I would return to repeat. The Kobe burger costs $16 for 8 ounces of Kobe beef, mild cheddar, red onion, beefsteak

Milkshakes ($5, $6 made with frozen yogurt) or a root beer float go perfectly with a burger, and the menu features eight varieties. It’s fun to experiment, but I always go back to a good old “Classic” chocolate, vanilla or strawberry shake. I love Westchester Burger’s extra wide straws which make sucking up the perfectly blended shakes fun. There are plenty of appetizers (including crispy Cheeseburger Spring Rolls at $7 for 6), salads and a number of entrées if you don’t desire a burger. If you happen to have room for dessert or want to stop in just for a sweet treat, the Doughnut Burger looks cool on the Westchester Burger Co. website. It consists of a jellyfilled doughnut made to look like the ketchup in a bun, sliced kiwi to resemble lettuce, sliced strawberries to look like tomato and warm molten cake for the burger. I’m told it tastes great, too, if you can handle all that sweetness. Food is served at Westchester Burger starting at 11:30 a.m. seven days a week. From Sunday through Wednesday, it continues until 10 p.m., Thursday till 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until midnight. Parking is easy in the Washington Park Plaza lot.

We have the best-tasting burgers in the business.” “Ingredients Matter” is an Elevation Burger slogan that appears on the backs of the servers’ navy blue shirts. While they look less appealing than those at the other two burger joints because they’re served in a wrapper on a metal tray much like an 11x13 metal
Westchester Burger Co. is located in the Washington Park Plaza at 275 South Ridge St. tomato on a brioche bun. The Pretzel burger ($14) consists of 8 ounces of angus beef, mild cheddar, maple bacon and a fried egg on a pretzel bun. Then there’s Mom’s Italian Turkey burger ($14), 8 ounces of chopped turkey topped with vinegar peppers, smoked mozzarella, and a touch of marinara on focaccia. The Greenhouse ($13) features an 8-ounce veggie patty, guacamole, frisée, frizzled onions, balsamic tarragon vinaigrette on multi-grain. The Soprano burger ($13) starts with an 8-ounce chicken burger and adds fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers and pesto on focaccia. Ba Da Bing burger ($15) is comprised of an 8-ounce Italian sausage blend, broccoli rabe, provolone cheese and a balsamic glaze on focaccia. There’s also a Lamb burger ($15), The Entourage ($14), a 10-ounce burger between two Texas toast grilled cheeses, a Tuna burger ($16) and a Bison burger ($16). Or you can build your own Ultimate IBurger at a cost of $7 for 6 ounces, $10 for 8 ounces and $12 for 10 ounces.
Elevation Burger
If D’Licias gives you the most for your money and Westchester Burger offers the best dining experience, Elevation Burger boasts the most healthy burgers, fries and shakes. The burgers are made with 100% grass-fed, free-range beef ground on-premises. The Rye Ridge North Shopping Center location, which opened Oct. 1 where Ray’s Café had been, is the first of this USDA-certified organic hamburger chain’s sites in Westchester. The Virginia-based company, which opened its first restaurant in 2005, now has 20 locations and is growing rapidly. Owner Daniel Magnus of Rye, who has the exclusive franchise rights for Westchester and Fairfield counties, said the organic nature of the food is what attracted him since he and his wife are raising their children on organic products free of antibiotics and other chemicals. Rye Brook is his first location. “We’re elevating hamburgers and the environment in which we serve them to a whole new level,” said Magnus, a former publishing executive and very personable gentleman who has been on the premises the two
are served in a cardboard dish. They tasted fine but not as good as I expected. I sampled a Veggie Burger #2 ($3.99), a savory blend of
cake pan with a paper placemat rather than on a plate, the hamburgers at Elevation Burger taste great and are exceptionally juicy, even messy. Their menu states that the bun “complements the burger rather than competing with it.” That’s for sure. A more substantial bun would make it easier to eat. I’m not sure what it would do to the flavor. For an extra healthy burger, you can skip the bun and order your meat or veggie burger wrapped in lettuce. Sounds horrible to me. The standard Elevation Burger costs $5.79 for two 3.2-ounce organic beef patties placed on top of each other in a bun with your choice of as many toppings as you like (ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, caramelized onions, mustard, mayo, raw onions, Elevation sauce (a secret tomatobased sweet variety), balsamic mustard, jalapenos and/or hot pepper relish). Aged cheddar cheese costs $.40 a slice and bleu cheese dressing $.50 extra. So the price isn’t bad for what you get. Thin Fresh Fries ($2.69), which are freshly cut in a machine as you watch and cooked in heart-healthy olive oil,
organic ingredients (vegan) which, once piled high with various toppings, didn’t taste half bad (you can tell I’m a meat lover). The Veggie Burger #1 is the same price with cheese added. A Kid’s Burger ($3.99) consists of one organic beef patty. Stack up as many as 10 patties for a Vertigo Burger which varies in price depending on quantity. Half the Guilt Burger ($5.99) features one beef and one veggie patty. You can also get an Elevation Salad ($5.99) or a grilled cheese sandwich made with aged cheddar cheese ($2.99). Thick shakes ($4.49) are made with antibiotic- and hormone-free milk. You can choose from chocolate, vanilla or coffee ice cream and add one or two ingredients such as Oreo cookies, fresh bananas, strawberries, blueberries or mangos, key lime or organic cheesecake. The thickness, I’ve found, depends on who makes them. The first time
I had to slurp my milkshake with a spoon, the second time a straw sufficed. Key lime and vanilla ice cream proved too bland, Oreo cookies in chocolate perfectly yummy. The cookies on the menu, fresh baked chocolate chip oatmeal pecan made with organic eggs and butter ($1.69 for large, $1.19 for three small), taste good but don’t look like they’ve been baked because they apparently don’t rise. They are small but rich. As far as service, Elevation Burger is considered “fast casual,” a step above fast food. You line up to place your order which is then delivered to your table by a server after your name is called for identification. Workers at the new Rye Brook location are pleasant and on the ball. The blue and white décor matches the Elevation Burger logo of snow-capped mountains. It is fairly stark but attractive with some nice details—bright white wainscoting, a pale blue tin ceiling with exposed silver piping attached to it, blue tile behind the counter, a wood floor with green slate tiles at the entryway and creating a walkway to the counter. Round and square beige tables have a wood grain look. Business at the Rye Brook Elevation Burger has been brisk, said Magnus, calling it “an entrepreneur’s dream come true.” Elevation Burger, which attracts people of all ages, including plenty of kids, is open seven days from 11 am. to 9 p.m. Ample parking is available in the shopping center lot.

While these new burger joints have been taking root in Rye Town, Wendy’s has seen its demise after many years on the Boston Post Road in Port Chester. Will that prominent location be the new home of an IHOP? That’s the buzz around town, but so far that’s all it is.
D’Licias Café at 118 Westchester Ave., located in the neighborhood of the Port Chester train station, does not yet have a permanent sign.
