RESTAURANT REVIEW

F.I.S.H. reels in customers with delicious seafood dishes By Jananne Abel

A

restaurant that back in August I reported was taking shape in Port Chester is now open for business. And it’s gotten so popular that you may have to call more than a day ahead to get a reservation at a reasonable time on a Saturday night. With this kind of reception, you won’t be able to get near this out of the way eating spot at the foot of Fox Island Road on the weekends without plenty of notice once the warm weather arrives. A restaurant that back in August I reported was taking shape in Port Chester is now open for business. William Rosenberg of Port Chester and Denis Ossorio of Greenwich, who have known each other for 10 years, did an extensive renovation of the building that had last been The Pearl to create F.I.S.H., short for Fox Island Seafood House, at 102 Fox Island Rd. Both have a great deal of restaurant experience, so it is

no wonder their new venture has been reeling in customers. Rosenberg came up with the clever name, Ossorio had the vision, and together they created this Mediterranean seafood house with a unique nautical décor overlooking the Byram River. It’s a tranquil, beautiful spot with lovely homes across the way and boats pulling in and out during the warm weather. The restaurant features a deck that seats 30 for outdoor eating and has docks in front of it so customers can reach it by boat during the spring, summer and fall. Business has been “better than what I originally thought it would be,” said Rosenberg, 34, a Culinary Institute of America graduate who was the chef at Two Moons in Port Chester from 1993 to 1996 when Ossorio was the

owner. “It is such a down and out place.” Customers must pass the sewage treatment plant and the Department of Public Works yard on Fox Island Road as well as the Port Chester Yacht Club to get there. Nevertheless, Rosenberg previously said that fact was also part of the location’s draw, calling it an oasis, and I agree. Few places in Port Chester can boast the view of boats and swans passing by afforded here. F.I.S.H. has attracted many customers from Greenwich and Rye, said Rosenberg, but has not received too much local support yet. He is looking to get permission from the village to place a sign advertising the restaurant at the corner of Fox Island Road and Grace Church Street. After Two Moons, Rosenberg was chef at Dome in Greenwich and at Barcelona Wine Bar in South Norwalk before pairing up with Ossorio on this project. Ossorio, 61, previously owned Black Sheep and Two Moons in Port Chester and now is principal owner of Dome on Greenwich Avenue. Required renovations, which began last November, were more widespread than anticipated and took longer than expected, but F.I.S.H. finally opened on Sept. 17. After working for others, it was Rosenberg’s longtime dream to open his own restaurant and he wanted to do something in Port Chester where he grew up and has lived all his life. With his culinary expertise and Ossorio’s vision, Fox Island Seafood House was born.

Colorful nautical decor

A view into the second dining room at F.I.S.H.

The restaurant has a colorful décor, lots of natural light and offers wonderful views of the water. It is worth the trip down Fox Island Road just to take them all in. Ossorio and Rosenberg hired the same artist who created the interesting Southwestern décor at Two Moons, Rick Molina of Norwalk. Using the effects of faux painting, he has created a piece of nautical art where there is no differentiation between the ceiling and walls. Bright blue spongepainted walls and large plants greet you in the entryway. As you’re walking through the hallway to get to the dining rooms, which seat 77, you pass through sheets of steel and glass to give the effect of being on a big ocean liner. Then there’s a huge fish eye

F.I.S.H. rreels eels in customers with delicious seaf ood dishes seafood Cioppino (steamed shrimp, mussels and calamari in a spicy tomato lobster broth) to $14 for Lobster fra Diavolo, salads go for from $7 to $9 and entrées are priced from $16 for Chicken Milanese to $23 for Seared Rare Hawaiian Tuna “Mignon” au Poivre with crispy sweetbreads, olive oil mashed potatoes, wilted greens, onion crisps and red wine sauce. Rosenberg said the tuna is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. He calls it “surf and turf,” describing the sweetbreads (thymus glands of veal) to be “like the best piece of chicken you’ve ever eaten.” Let’s not forget the two-pound Maine Lobster fra Diavolo made with tomatoes, basil, toasted garlic and chile flakes at market price. Thin gourmet pizzas and pastas range from $12 for a margherita pizza (tomatoes, mozzarella and basil) to $17 for Wild Mushroom Risotto ($10 for an appetizer portion). Wood-fired rigatoni with sweet Italian sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and ricotta cheese ($16) is the current pasta baked in the wood-burning oven. The baked pasta dish will change periodically. The raw bar includes oysters (6 for $11), Rhode Island Littleneck Clams (6 for $7), a monster shrimp cocktail ($15), lobster cocktail ($13) and combination platters. There is also a minnows’ menu for children with all choices priced at $6 and a late night menu served from 11 p.m. till 3:30 a.m. Thursday through Saturday featuring appetizers, pizza, salads and, as much as possible, “whatever people want,” said Rosenberg, who aims to please. “I like to make sure people leave happy and get whatever they want,” he said. “People forget this is the hospital-

Out of this world! The Cioppino is tasty and chock full of seafood—a good choice as long as you like slightly chewy whole baby octopi.

Rosenberg’s trademark Chicken Scarpariello ($18) is also a favorite. “It haunts me everywhere I go,” he said. It consists of sautéed organic chicken with hot cherry peppers, toasted garlic, lemon and white wine over roasted potatoes. For those who don’t like seafood, he also recommends the Prime Hangar Steak Florentine basted with lemon and olive oil and served with broccoli rabe and pommes frites with house made ketchup ($19). I can definitely recommend the Skilled Roasted Shrimp appetizer ($10) which our waitress raved

The Paella Valenciana for two ($18 per person) was disappointing except for the tasty chunks of chorizo—too heavy and too many peas for my liking. The dish consists of shrimp, mussels, clams, chicken and chorizo (Mexican sausage) tossed with saffron rice, sofrito (sauce made with annatto seeds and pork fat to which chopped onion, green pepper, garlic, pork and spices are added) and peas.

Dinner for three Meals at F.I.S.H. start with a basket of focaccia which may be dipped in olive oil poured by the wait staff into a ceramic warmer brought to each table.

We chose a special white wine to complement our meal which wasn’t on the list—a 2001 Ghost Gum chardonnay ($28) which was perfectly satisfying while not being memorable. The wine list, which includes domestic, French and Italian wines, is helpfully categorized as white or red and then by what type of food to drink it with. There are also daily specials. Don’t forget that, as an incentive to get diners to the restaurant earlier, customers get a free bottle of wine if they order by 6:30 p.m., even on Saturday night. There are a few varieties (in the $30 range) to choose from. On a recent visit our waitress didn’t tell us about the incentive and we noticed the reminder about it that came with our check. When it was brought to her attention, our waitress didn’t hesitate to remove the price of our bottle of wine from the check. Barbecued Octopus ($10) was an interesting salad mixture with baby octopus, greens, kalamata olives and onions in a balsamic vinaigrette. Frisee and Wine Sap Apple Salad ($9) was a good choice and an interesting blend of flavors and textures—mildly bitter curly frisée greens, pieces of apple, sherry vinaigrette, toasted walnuts and Roquefort cheese. For the main course, Salmon Saltimbuco ($19) was a large portion and nicely presented. The fish, cooked in a lemony sauce with capers, was delectable. It was topped with broccoli rabe and served atop a heap of yummy garlic mashed potatoes. Crispy Black Bass ($19) was replaced by the same preparation of talapia. It was served in a large bowl with the opening facing the patron as opposed to a traditional upright one. The peppery taste

wasn’t pleasing to my palate, but my husband enjoyed it. It came with four mussels in the shell along with baby artichokes, tomatoes, mussels and kalamata olives in a spicy sauce. Chicken Milanese ($16) brought a huge piece of breaded chicken cutlet, slightly peppery, topped with a round slab of buffalo mozzarella cheese, a lemon wedge and surrounded by a tomato arugula salad tossed with balsamic vinaigrette. The salad added flavor and moisture to the chicken. For dessert, Apple Crisp with Walnuts and Crème Caramel ice cream were a delicious combination. The warm chocolate cake was moist, not too heavy, and also a pleasing pick among the desserts, all priced at $6. Service was efficient but not enthusiastic. On another visit, however, the service by a different waitress was friendly and exceptional. The meal for three came to $124.85.

Holiday specials, hours and future plans The Fox Island Seafood House will be open Christmas Eve with its regular menu plus the traditional Italian 7-fish meal for those who want it. For New Year’s Eve, Rosenberg will offer a special menu plus an all-fish, six-course chef’s tasting menu consisting of such delicacies as fresh shucked oysters with caviar, lobster risotto, butter-poached king crabmeat, and salmon wrapped in prosciutto for $125 with an added cost if you choose to have specially selected wines with each course. Reservations are required. For now F.I.S.H. is not serving lunch because there isn’t a demand for it, said Rosenberg. It will probably be offered seasonally from May 1 to Oct. 1 when customers will want to enjoy the nice weather and lovely view from the restaurant’s deck. The head chef also plans to start a Sunday brunch after the first of the year. Hours are currently Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. with a late night menu Thursday through Saturday as previously mentioned. The restaurant is closed Monday. During warm weather F.I.S.H. can seat another 50-60 people on the deck overlooking the river and on the makeshift patio below. Plans to add another 30 seats by expanding the deck space and building a sunroom above it are now before the Port Chester Planning Commission but have hit a snag due to a question of who owns the parking lot surrounding the building. The partners also intend to set up a casual outdoor tiki bar serving New England style seafood to boaters during the summer.
