Restaurant review
Late night eating spots range from fast to fancy
Y
By Jananne Abel
ou go to a meeting and it gets out at 11 p.m. You didn’t have time to eat dinner before you went. So, where do you go? Amazingly, there are a number of choices in Port Chester and Rye Brook. From fast food to fancy, from Chinese to chili, there’s something to please many palates. If you’re burning the midnight oil and have the munchies or need coffee to keep you awake, there are choices. The streets don’t roll up at night in this little community of ours. A dozen places serve food after 11 p.m. on a daily basis with another handful staying open after 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Most of the choices are in Port Chester, one in Rye Brook. The most obvious choice for late night eating is the Port Chester Coach Diner-Restaurant at 317 Boston Post Rd., open 24 hours seven days a week. The portions are large, the menu is huge and you can get breakfast, lunch or dinner. But don’t expect great food. Your best bet is breakfast, a burger or a sandwich (there are a slew). I recently ordered a chicken walnut salad after midnight and instead of getting chicken salad with walnuts and celery over greens with tomato and egg wedges and black olives as described on the menu got large pieces of hot grilled chicken over greens with walnuts and olives which I found unappetizing. There’s everything you can imagine for breakfast including French toast (even banana raisin or made with challah bread), pancakes, Belgian waffles, bagels, lox and cream cheese, omelets, eggs any style with corned beef hash, ham steak, steak, bacon or sausage, muffins, Danish and croissants. Snacks such as potato skins, fried clams and Buffalo wings,
salads of all sorts, souvlaki, Italian dishes, pasta, roasted chicken and other chicken dishes, beef liver, roast beef, meatloaf, steaks and chops, seafood (including a whole list of bluefish specials for $12.95) and veal dishes and Mexican specialties are just some of the unbelievable variety offered at the diner. If you have a sweet tooth, a revolving display features luscious cakes and pies. In addition, choose from brownies, turnovers, Napoleans, éclairs, rugalach, strudel, chocolate mousse, baklava, crumb cake, rice pudding, sundaes and more. If you happen to want an alcoholic beverage, the diner features a full bar. The atmosphere is bright, and late night seating is in the section to the right of the entrance which features booths with juke boxes at each table, a lit ceiling and a view of two huge fish tanks. Booths are surrounded by glass with a horse pulling a coach etched into many of the panels. Prices are reasonable.
The first floor of Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar in Port Chester as seen from the second. This fun, sports-themed restaurant is one of the local places that serve food after 11 p.m. Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar, which opened in June 2006 in The Waterfront at Port Chester development at 44 Westchester Ave., serves food and drinks Monday through Thursday until 1 a.m. (orders must be placed by 12:40), until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and until midnight Sunday. Buffalo Wild Wings is a fun place to eat and drink with its high ceilings and sports décor. There are 10 large screen TVs, 21 32” TVs, two 52” plasmas and two 42” plasmas which literally surround you on almost every wall for full-on sports viewing. Sports photos and a framed Yankee uniform behind glass hang on rough hewn wood walls. Seating is at a variety of tables and booths. Chairs, booths and barstools are wooden with the chain’s winged buffalo chicken logo carved into them.
The walls and ceiling at Hubba, noted for its hot chili, are plastered with signed $1 bills. The 24 North Main St. restaurant is open till 4 a.m.
The wings, which can be ordered in a variety of sizes (6 being the smallest) depending upon your appetite, are meaty and moist with 14 different sauces to choose from, ranging from mild to blazin’. Good news: There’s no longer an extra charge for bleu cheese or ranch dressing and celery as there was when the restaurant first opened. While the menu includes other items, I recommend sticking with the wings ($4.59 for 6, 40 cents each on Tuesdays). Spicy garlic is my favorite sauce. It has just the right amount of spiciness and is at the same time tangy. Steer clear of the burgers or grilled chicken sandwich. I can, however, recommend the chicken tender wrap, ribs and chicken tenders combo plate and roasted garlic mushrooms. If you like Bloody Marys, they don’t get any better than those at this establishment. The beverage, which can also be ordered without alcohol, comes with a slice of pickle, green olives and a stalk of celery in the glass. It has good flavor and is a meal in itself. In addition, there are 23 types of beer on draft, and another 24 bottled beers are available in addition to frozen drinks like margaritas, daiquiris and screwdrivers. It’s unusual to be able to enjoy fine dining until midnight in the suburbs. But you can do just that at Café Mirage at 531 North Main St., near the Greenwich border, where a sign out front reads: “Kitchen Open Until Midnight.” And that’s six days a week. The international eatery is closed Sunday. The restaurant used to serve dinner even later but cut back the hours more than a year ago. Café Mirage features unusual soups, salads, appetizers and a variety of international dishes in addition to a raw bar and sandwiches. Some examples of appetizers:
Thai Ginger Lemongrass Shrimp, Smoked Duck and Goat Cheese Quesadilla and Katy’s Key West Conch Fritters. The restaurant is known for its arugula, grapefruit, gorgonzola and pignoli nut salad with poppy seed vinaigrette which has been a staple. Among the entrées: Barley Risotto with grilled chicken, chorizo, shrimp, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, Coconut Curry Shrimp or Chicken, Sesame Crusted Seared Yellowfin Tuna, Shell Steak au Poivre, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Farm Raised Ostrich Medallions and Herb Roasted Chicken with mashed potatoes. Half pound burgers with gorgonzola, white cheddar, sautéed mushrooms or chili, buffalo burgers, garden vegetable burgers, Jamaican jerk chicken, Tony’s Favorite Tuna Sandwich with Cajun rub and a Texas steak wedge with hot chili, cheese and onions are among the items listed “Between Breads.” There are also daily pasta and other specials, such as the excellent grilled mahi mahi with salsa and snow peas I chose on a recent visit. To go with your meal, you’ll find a nice selection of red and white wines by the glass and bottle. Pomegranate and mango margaritas, passion fruit and espresso martinis and Nick’s mango rum punch are the restaurant’s specialty drinks. My recent visit confirmed my previous feeling that, if you have the choice (depending on the season), eating outside on this restaurant’s lovely patio is preferable to eating inside where the décor is unremarkable and somewhat stuffy. On the other end of North Main Street and the other side of the food spectrum, Hubba figures at # 24. This tiny location Please turn to page 6R

Restaurant review
Late night eating spots range from fast to fancy Continued from page 5R has been an eatery for about 100 years. Oldtimers (and even I) remember it as The Texas, then it was Pat’s Hubba Hubba for 16 years before current owner Carlos Magan bought it eight years ago and renamed it Hubba. The focus all these years has remained pretty much the same—on the chili. A big pot of it sits on a burner in the front window as it has for 50 years. You can still get a hamburger, hotdog or fries Texas—meaning with chili and onions. Hubba is open from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. seven days a week. When the bars close or after a night of drinking, people flock to Hubba. Others just crave a good (albeit small) hamburger with chili at midnight or later and run to Hubba. Yes, the burgers ($2.75 with chili) and hotdogs ($2.50 with chili) are small, but you can’t beat the fries with chili and onions ($3 for a small order). Sometimes I do get a craving for them. With your nose running and your throat burning, Hubba’s red fruit punch works wonders to cool you down. Of course, there are other drink choices as well, including water. Steak wedges (served Texas, California, full house or pizzaiola), meatball and veal parmesan wedges, onion rings, fried clams and a chicken platter complete the menu items. The long narrow space that is Hubba hasn’t changed much in 50 years. Stools are lined up in front of a long, ice blue counter that runs almost the length of the place. Menu items and prices are handwritten in black magic marker on small light blue paper plates tacked up on the wall behind the counter. While the walls were filled with signed pictures of famous people
who had been there in the past when it was The Texas, they are now plastered with signed $1 bills. So is the ceiling. Reportedly there are 5,000 of them. The atmosphere here is casual and friendly and, besides the bills,
rooms, fried zucchini, chicken fingers, seasoned French fries, bar pizza or a fried combo platter served with two sauces. I can vouch for the burgers, served with fries and cole slaw for $7, and fried mushrooms ($6).
A sign outside Café Mirage at 531 North Main St. advertises that the kitchen is open until midnight.
small flags from many countries hang behind the counter. Davy Byrnes, an Irish pub and restaurant, has been a fixture in Port Chester since 1990. The 538 Willett Ave. location it occupies has been home to a bar/restaurant going back 50 years. Oldtimers remember it as The Newport Inn. You can’t get any Irish food after 10 p.m., but that’s when the late night menu kicks in until 3:30 a.m. seven days a week. The bar menu isn’t extensive, but now that smoking is no longer allowed indoors, the atmosphere at Davy Byrnes’ rectangular bar is pleasant enough to enjoy a half pound burger, Buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, chili cheddar nachos, potato skins, batter dipped fried mush-
The bartenders, who provide the service, are friendly and accommodating. The bar attracts all ages. A juke box, seven plasma TVs broadcasting sporting events and dart boards provide entertainment. While it is known around town as mainly a bar, people may be surprised to learn that J T Straw’s Bar & Grill at 435 North Main St., not far from Café Mirage, actually has a large menu. And food is now served every day until 3 a.m. Soups, salads, different types of pizza, appetizers like onion rings and chicken fingers, steamed clams, mussels, chili, fried shrimp, seafood marinara, Italian chicken and veal dinners, pasta, baby back ribs, burgers, hotdogs, wedges,

sandwiches and wraps figure among the offerings. Besides one booth adjacent to the bar and pool table, I recently realized there are actually four or five tables in a more private corner at the back of the establishment. It’s definitely a bar atmosphere-nothing fancy--but the service is friendly and so are the people who frequent the place. I haven’t yet sampled too many things on the menu. The half-pound burgers ($8.50 with choice of fries, onion rings or side salad) and bowl of chili with raw onions and cheddar/jack cheese ($5.50) are good. I recall a steak being mediocre, but that was some time ago.
The only Rye Brook restaurant where you can order food after 11 p.m. is Frank’s Steaks, the lovely eatery featuring steak and sushi that opened in March in the Washington Park Plaza at 275 South Ridge St.--where Eclisse used to be. A bar menu is available until midnight Thursday through Saturday which includes such things as burgers and skirt steak sandwiches, chicken wings and tenders, Little Neck clams and Caesar salad. The full menu is available until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The bar/lounge at Frank’s is a classy place to enjoy a drink and a late night snack. You can eat at the rich-looking horseshoe-shaped bar where three TV screens are inset on each side and a waterfall flows behind the liquor bottles, at one of 10 high round tables spread around the room or at a booth along one wall. Service here is friendly and the food is first class. Two Chinese restaurants on Westchester Avenue, Number One at #120 (near the intersection of Broad Street) and Panda further up the avenue at #213, stay open past 11 p.m. Number One is open every night until midnight, Panda until 11:30 five days and till 12:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. I haven’t eaten at either of these restaurants recently, but they both have all of the standard Cantonese dishes plus Szechuan specialties and special combination plates. Prices are similar and very reasonable. Each has a small, modest eating area, although I’d say that much of their business, as with all Chinese restaurants, is takeout. Of course you can always opt for fast food. McDonald’s Restaurant at 321 Boston Post Rd. is open until 1:00 a.m. Sunday through Thurs-
day, 24 hours Friday and Saturday. The drive-thru is open 24 hours seven days a week. Everything on the menu is available late night except they often run out of cookies (chocolate chip or oatmeal) because they’re so popular. Burger King, located on the other side of the street at 260 Boston Post Rd., closes its doors at 11 p.m. every day, but the drive-thru is open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Dunkin Donuts at 330 Boston Post Rd., right across the street from McDonald’s, never closes. The Dunkin Donuts store on Midland Avenue, however, closes at 10 p.m. every day. So if you’re craving their coffee, doughnuts, bagels or egg sandwiches, you can get them anytime. Many local restaurants serve food until 11 p.m. on weekends, but the following five do so even later: • You can get a meal at Nessa Ristorante, 325 North Main St., until midnight Friday and Saturday. They stop serving at 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and at 10 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Nessa, an Italian enotecca which opened in February, specializes in bruschetta, and not just the traditional type of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes and perhaps onions—tramezzini, sandwiches made on high white bread without crust, and panini, now-popular grilled sandwiches which originated in Italy. However, as a dinner spot, Nessa is more than just a sandwich shop, offering salads and a limited number of entrées as well. • T&J Pizza & Pasta at 227 Westchester Ave. serves its delicious pizza and Italian specialties until midnight Friday and Saturday, closing at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and at 10 p.m. Sunday. • You can also get good Italian food at Il Pizzaiolo at 46 North Main St. until midnight Friday and Saturday. Like T&J, it closes at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and at 10 p.m. Sunday. • Panda II Chinese Restaurant at 32 Grace Church St. is open for business until 11:30 Sunday through Thursday and until 12:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. • Lastly, Tropic at 23½ North Main St., once a seafood restaurant but now strictly a nightclub, serves Buffalo wings, fried calamari and chicken fingers along with alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages Thursday through Sunday from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. Tropic offers many tropical drinks and is known for its mojitos.
