RESTAURANT REVIEW

Buddha impresses Dramatic décor, innovative dishes and beautiful presentation

I

BY JANANNE ABEL

t was many months in the making, but Buddha finally started firing up its grills in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 1 and 1A Rye Ridge Plaza (around the back) on May 18. This space that was previously the Rye Ridge movie theater is now a dramatically decorated, upscale Asian bistro serving sushi and Asian fusion cuisine while also offering the measured portions and theatrics of an hibachi steakhouse. There’s cuisine from every corner of Asia here to please every palate. Brought to you by the Lin family, who hail from China but now live in New York City, Buddha is the latest restaurant to open in a group that includes Okinawa in Yorktown, Mt. Kisco, Ossining and Bayside, all Japanese eateries, and Lucky Buddha in Thornwood, the latter having much the same décor and cuisine as its Rye Brook counterpart. “It needed an upscale, Manhattan style restaurant—family style, offering different things to people in the area, hibachi and Asian fusion and a place to go in the nighttime instead of traveling to White Plains,” said Peter Lin, assistant manager, about why the Lin family decided to open a restaurant in Rye Brook. Initially Lin said he recommended the curry dishes, sushi and the hibachi cooking for its entertainment value but then

Hibachi chef Frankie Chen serves food to the patrons around his table at Buddha in Rye Brook. added that the Chinese, Thai and Japanese specialties and in fact every element of the eclectic menu is of excellent quality and comes highly recommended. At Buddha in Rye Brook as well as Lucky Buddha in Thornwood, the restaurant is divided into two separate dining rooms—the fine-dining room, home to the sushi bar, and the hibachi area. The latter, which caters to families, is home to

Sushi chef Henry Lee cuts up the California roll he just prepared.

10 communal tables set back to back in groups of two with comfortable leather seating. The former “satisfies the taste buds of a more discerning crowd of hip younger adults,” according to Lucky Buddha’s website. Here you can enjoy the wide variety of innovative Pan Asian fusion dishes. Lin couldn’t tell me how much money was spent to create Buddha’s impressive décor, just that it cost a substantial amount to transform the bare, almost 6,000-square-foot space into the multi-faceted Asian restaurant you see today. The Asian décor replete with many Buddha statues was designed to exude warmth and peace, said Lin, and create an oasis of sorts. Most impressive is the huge ceramic Buddha in the lobby that sits atop a stone and ceramic fountain guarded by mean-looking ceramic frogs. It is surrounded by large red Chinese letters scrawled on the wall behind it. Birch tree trunks act as dividers or decorative elements in various locations and other tree trunks serve as pedestals for the tables in the fine-dining room. The walls are covered with hand-crafted ceramic tiles etched with Japanese and Chinese characters and large bas reliefs of both real and fantasy animals. A glass partition between the two halves of the restaurant has built-in shelves on which a variety of horses, dragons and Oriental pottery is displayed and can be seen from

both sides. Juxtaposed with the oldworld décor are sleek, gas-fired hibachi tables surrounded by black marble and a modern bar complete with tall comfortable stools and a large flat screen TV. At the bar, situated in the lobby opposite the Buddha fountain, you can get drinks of all varieties—from bottles of premium sake ($7 to $80 in 3 sizes), to a large selection of wines by the glass and bottle, to cocktails like an Electric Peach or 007 ($8), to a whole page of martinis ($10).

Asian delights at reasonable prices I don’t pretend to be a connoisseur of Asian cuisine. But I can say that on my three visits to Buddha I was impressed with the freshness of the food, the attractive presentation and the reasonable prices, especially for lunch.

Fun hibachi-style experience In the evening the hibachistyle dining room is the more popular of the two and attracts a lot of families with young children who delight in watching the 4-5 hibachi chefs toss a raw egg up with their spatula and flip it into their pocket, create a line of fire on the hibachi table, try to flip pieces of chopped vegetables into the open mouths of patrons and other theatrics. Buddha is not unlike other hibachi steakhouses in that you

get a small salad with ginger dressing, clear soup with mushrooms, a shrimp appetizer (2 pieces), vegetables, white rice and noodles along with your choice of meat such as chicken ($17), seafood such as salmon or tilapia ($19) or a combination such as filet mignon and chicken ($25), filet mignon and scallops ($29), Seafood Deluxe (lobster tail, shrimp and scallops at $30) or Royal Buddah (lobster tail, shrimp and filet mignon at $39) except that there are a lot more choices here. Hibachi Minor ($12-19) is available for children 10 and under. I love having the food prepared on the hibachi table because it seems so healthy and tastes delicious. What I do miss are the bean sprouts you used to get at hibachi steakhouses in the past instead of the noodles. They were tasty and definitely more healthy than the noodles which combined with the rice (you can get fried rice which is mixed with egg, oil and seasonings to create a yummy mixture for $3 extra) make for a lot of carbs. You’re supposed to get a separated dish filled with mustard and ginger sauces for dipping (both savory), and we did get that on our first visit but had to remind the chef the second time around. For lunch, you can get a hibachi entrée for as little as $9 for vegetarian or as much as $14 for a combination of steak and shrimp. The lunch includes soup, salad, one-piece shrimp appetizer, veggies, white rice and noodles, so it’s a bargain if you can eat that much for lunch. The trick is to have this big meal for lunch and a light supper. No one says everyone in your party has to have hibachi if you’re sitting on that side of the restaurant. When we went for lunch recently, our daughter visiting from California had the most beautifully presented sushi and sashimi lunch special (3 pieces of sushi, 6 pieces of sashimi and a California roll), also served with miso soup or a salad. She thought it was reasonably priced and delicious at $14. This special came with 3 pieces each of eel (which I was always afraid of, but it was actually good and not overly fishy), 3 pieces of salmon and 3 pieces of tuna, some draped over rice and some on julienne of white radish, She also had the strawberry Ramuné Japanese soda ($3.75), which was flavorful and a sure hit with kids because it comes in a funky bottle that when Please turn to page 7

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Buddha impresses punched to open releases air and a marble shoots up from the bottom into the liquid. Our lunch for three with two large hot sakes came to $62 without tip.

Enjoyable fine-dining experience On another occasion we had an early Saturday night dinner on the fine-dining side at Buddha with another couple, including a variety of alcoholic beverages, sushi rolls, other dishes and one dessert and our bill totaled close to $100 a couple including tip. Still not bad for the amount of food and drink we consumed. There was a bit of a language barrier with our server. All of the wait staff hail from various Asian countries and sport black shirts embossed with gold Chinese characters on the back. I was asking the difference between two lobster house-designed sushi rolls in an attempt to order one, but in the end we got both of them. One was Temptation (lobster salad, avocado and lettuce inside a healthy soybean wrap with shrimp and mango on the outside at $13) and the other Lady Lobster (lobster tempura, avocado, cucumber and tobiko (fish eggs) at $14). Both were equally delicious, the latter more crunchy, of course, and fishy. They were beautiful to look at and gorgeously intertwined on a platter decorated with a banana leaf and an orchid, slices of lemon, wasabe and slices of white ginger. Besides these, we ordered a Vietnamese Summer Roll, listed under “Kitchen Beginnings.” It included avocado, shrimp and vermicelli wrapped in rice paper sitting in a sweet mango sauce ($8). The diverse range of alcoholic beverages allowed us to order everything from a saketini, a mild-tasting drink made with sake in which slices of cucumber were floating ($10), to a frozen strawberry daiquiri ($8),

to a Malibu Bay Breeze ($8), to a beer. The homemade wonton soup ($3) was better than most and served piping hot. The fishy broth swimming with seaweed was accentuated by a handful of delicate wontons. Under the “Noodle and Rice” category, I particularly enjoyed the Pad Thai with shrimp ($13), which, as noted with a chili pepper next to it on the menu, was hot and spicy. Similar to angel hair, it has pieces of egg in it in addition to the shrimp. From Southeast Asia, the Chicken with Sambal Sauce ($14), another spicy dish, was equally tasty, made with ground shrimp and spices served with white or brown rice. The Singapore Mai Fun with shrimp ($13), a spicy rice vermicelli mélange, was equally enjoyed at our table, as was Buddha’s fried rice with vegetables ($11). All of these dishes can be made with chicken, vegetables, pork, beef or shrimp. Another category on the menu is called “Wok & Grill” featuring such items as Crispy Red Snapper ($20), Fire Wok (prawn, lobster tail, sea scallops, lemongrass and Thai curry at $21), Thai Casserole ($17) and Duck Fajitas Asian Style ($18). For dessert, we shared the green tea fried ice cream ($5), which had a slightly bitter taste, a fried coating and a thick layer of whipped cream topped with a cherry. Other choices of ice cream are vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. As it turns out, I would have preferred the vanilla flavor of fried ice cream. Other desserts on the menu include fried cheesecake ($4.50) and Buddha banana split (fried banana with ice cream and honey).

Hours, parking Buddha is open seven days a week: Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 to 10 p.m. There is plenty of free parking in the shopping center lot.

Buddha is located around the back of the Rye Ridge Shopping Center at 1 and 1A Rye Ridge Plaza, a portion of the space that previously housed the Rye Ridge movie theater.

This impressive Buddha statue atop a fountain surrounded by mean-looking ceramic frogs is a focal point in the lobby at Buddha.
