RESTAURANT REVIEW

Davy Byrnes: An Irish pub with great food and prices By Jananne Abel

D

avy Byrnes, located at 538 Willett Ave. in the strip shopping center at the corner of Putnam Avenue, is first and foremost known as Port Chester’s only Irish pub and restaurant and as such is especially popular around St. Patrick’s Day. However, whether you like Irish fare or not, it’s a good bet any time of the year. There’s something for everyone, the food is top notch and the prices are reasonable. Davy Byrnes, a homey place owned by two Irishmen, has taken on extra appeal as a restaurant since the smoking ban went into effect in Westchester in June. There’s no longer the smell of smoke seeping into the dining room from the large bar next door. “Everybody feels comfortable here,” said co-owner John Mulvey, who hails from Leitrim in Ireland and now lives in Eastchester. Mulvey’s partner, Pat Kennedy, is from Waterford, known for its crystal, and now resides in Oak Ridge, N.J. Having worked together at an Irish pub and restaurant called Bill Munk on the East Side of Manhattan, Mulvey and Kennedy were looking to open their own place 13 years ago when the Willett Avenue location was available. They brought an Irish waitress with them who retired two years ago as well as their chef, Mexican-born Constantino “Chico” Flores, who has been with them since Davy Byrnes opened in January 1990. Lovely Kerri Harker, a student who recently moved from Port Chester to Stamford, has replaced Noreen Sheehan as the waitress who keeps customers happy in the dining room. “Everybody loves her,” said Mulvey, who is on hand during the day and until 8:00 or 9:00 at night when Kennedy comes in and stays until closing. Davy Byrnes is a famous pub in Dublin that James Joyce wrote about in Ulysses. “It is a tourist attraction there,” said Mulvey. “We thought it was a good name.” A passage from the book and two photographs of the Dublin pub hang on a wall in the dining room. There’s also a poster that reads “Joyce’s Ulysses Bloomsday Dublin” with additional photographs of the Irish city and other framed scenes of Dublin decorating the dining room. Most striking of all is the beautiful lit stained glass Irish scene set into the wall between the bar and dining room. Green and beige plastic tablecloths cover the tables which are also set with green paper placemats, and the seats of the wooden chairs in the dining room, which seats 42, are also green. The Irish theme is carried out even further around St. Paddy’s Day when shamrocks, leprechauns, banners reading “Erin Go Bragh”—meaning “Ireland Forever” in Gaelic—as well as tiny green lights decorate the bar and restaurant. Dark rustic paneling, Tiffany style lamps, lanterns and mirrors complete the dining room décor. On Monday and Tuesday nights when the dining room isn’t open or after 11 p.m. other nights, food is available in the warm atmosphere of the pub. Customers can eat at the large rectangular bar or at one of the tables set up on a raised platform at the front of the room. Davy Byrnes’ Irish fare and other specialties are available in the dining room Wednesday through Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m. and those same hours Monday and

Tuesday in the bar. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. A late night menu of burgers, pizza, Buffalo wings, nachos and other appetizers can be had in the bar until 3 a.m. Adding to the atmosphere in the bar is a dart board, two video games, a large screen TV, three other TVs and a juke box. Darts is a game anyone can play, said Mulvey. The establishment’s best dart throwers compete in a Westchester league with 35-40 teams from different bars and eateries. Starting with one team back in 1995, Davy Byrnes now has three, and the trophies they have won over the years are on display. The pub also sponsors three softball teams, one in Port Chester, one in Rye Brook and one in Greenwich.

Menu Davy Byrnes features Irish fare of Gaelic Mixed Grill ($13.95), Shepherd’s Pie ($10.95), Chicken Pot Pie ($10.95), and Corned Beef & Cabbage ($10.95) on a regular basis for dinner, and Shepherd’s Pie ($7.50) for lunch. The restaurant often features Irish Beef Stew as a special for both lunch and dinner during the cold weather. Corned beef sandwiches ($5.75 to $6), served on rye or hot with melted Monterey Jack cheese on a wedge, are popular items on the lunch menu. The British specialty Fish and Chips ($9.95), another big seller, is served for dinner. The Mixed Grill includes Angus sirloin steak, Irish bacon (similar to Canadian bacon), pork bangers (sausage links), calves liver, and black and white pudding (made from a mixture of bread and pork formed into a roll, cut into round pieces and fried). Shepherd’s Pie, a favorite of mine, comes in a round crock and includes chopped sirloin, carrots and peas in a tasty sauce topped with fresh mashed potatoes and baked till it’s golden brown. The lean corned beef over cabbage is served with boiled potatoes and carrots. As for mustard, you have a choice of Colman’s Hot English, “everyone’s favorite,” according to Mulvey, or Gulden’s. For those who don’t care for Irish food, the menu includes an assortment of pasta, seafood, steak, chicken, turkey and burgers. Besides the Shepherd’s Pie, Mulvey says the chicken dishes are big sellers as are hamburgers, the seafood platter (shrimp, scallops and filet of sole at $12.95) and chicken wings. A Thursday night special from 9 p.m. till closing in the bar features wings at 10 cents each (a minimum order of 10 for $1). Chicken dishes ($10.95) include Chicken Breast with ham, Swiss cheese and mushrooms in a Marsala wine sauce, Chicken Scampi in a white wine and garlic sauce and Sautéed Chicken in balsamic vinegar, white wine and fresh herbs. Specials on a recent Sunday night included Filet Mignon with Mushrooms and Chicken Francese. For lunch, there’s a nice variety of sandwiches, half pound burger platter ($6) with fries, cole slaw and a pickle, salads, home-

Co-owner John Mulvey sits in front of the eye-catching stained glass Irish scene in the dining room at Davy Byrnes Restaurant. made soup, chili, a vegetarian omelet ($5.95) and daily specials such as Sliced Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Vegetables ($6.95), Grilled Chicken with Eggplant and Fresh Mozzarella on a Wedge ($5.50), Turkey Club with Roasted Peppers ($5.50) and Cobb Salad ($5.75). The burgers are excellent as is the Spinach Salad ($5.95 for lunch or dinner). The latter is made with spinach, sweet peppers (that’s what makes it different), chopped hard-boiled eggs, and sliced mushrooms in a warm bacon shallot vinaigrette. Live Irish music is only offered on and around St. Patrick’s Day when Davy Byrnes is the place to be.

Dinner for three I discovered that Davy Byrnes has an item on its menu I haven’t had since my college days in rural Pennsylvania. The Batter Dipped Fried Mushrooms ($5.25) are just that—loads of little button mushrooms battered and fried and served with a horseradish dipping sauce. Ketchup or cocktail sauce will also work. These were as good as I’ve had anywhere, and I highly recommend them. The Shrimp Cocktail ($5.95) brings five good-sized shrimp served with a zingy cocktail sauce. Irish beers at Davy Byrnes include

Guinness, a dark variety, and Harp, a lighter version. We chose the latter. The Shepherd’s Pie ($10.95), described earlier, did not disappoint, nor did the Chicken Pot Pie ($10.95). The latter is served in an oval crock filled with chicken chunks, green beans, potatoes and carrots in a light gravy topped with a light flaky crust baked golden brown. I’m not sure which one of these two Davy Byrnes specialties is better. You can’t go wrong with either of them. The third in our party opted for the Roast Turkey Breast over stuffing with mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetables which this day were carrots, cauliflower and corn on the cob. The turkey was sliced too thin and the slightly sweet dressing contained raisins and had the strong taste of a spice I think was rosemary. It was pleasing to me but not appealing to a 10-year-old. Dinners come with a basket of tasty Irish soda bread with raisins as well as Italian bread, soup of the day or salad, vegetable and choice of potato. The healthy salad contains greens, shaved carrots, red cabbage and tomato with choice of honey mustard, vinaigrette, ranch, or blue cheese dressing. The so-called rice and bean soup was excellent although it had no rice, just white beans, carrots and onions in a flavorsome stock. For dessert, we had the homemade, chunky rice pudding and the Very Berry Tart with whipped cream, both good choices and only $5.90 for the two. Made with blackberries, blueberries and strawberries topped with crisscrossed pastry, the tart was appetizing but would have been even better served warm with vanilla ice cream. Other homemade desserts include Sherry Trifle (an Irish specialty made with Jello, custard, pound cake, fruit cocktail, sherry and topped with whipped cream) and bread pudding. Caramel fudge pecan cake and apple pie a la mode are also listed on the dessert board these days. Our check came to $73.25 which included three beers, a mixed drink, a soda, two coffees and a tea. Parking at Davy Byrnes is convenient in the small lot out front or on the street. Co-owner Mulvey said he’s lost some regular bar customers to Greenwich establishments because of the smoking ban, but hopefully his restaurant trade will eventually pick up because of it. I think it should. Especially during the fall and winter months, you can’t beat the warmth of this Irish pub and its hearty, good quality food at exceptional prices.

Davy Byrnes is located in the strip shopping center at the corner of Putnam and Willett avenues in Port Chester.
