Kiosko Restaurant: A place to gather for authentic Mexican fare Dinner for three

By Jananne Abel

s people gather at gazebos or “kioskos” in the parks of Mexico, so do they meet at Kiosko Restaurant in Port Chester for authentic Mexican food in bright, clean surroundings. Spanish speakers and English speakers alike should feel comfortable there.

A

Cousins Nestor Morales of Queens and José Quintero of Bridgeport, Conn. teamed up to open Kiosko in March of this year, having taken over the former Locolomo Argentinean eatery at 220 Westchester Ave. which had closed the previous November. Morales owns another restaurant with partners in Queens while Quintero, the chef, has been cooking at various restaurants the last 15 years. Morales and Quintero hail from Puebla, Mexico, outside of Mexico City. While I have by no means tried half of the dishes on the menu at Kiosko, I can vouch for the freshness of the ingredients and the quality of the preparation. And even if you don’t like Mexican food, the fruit shakes and desserts are worth the trip. When asked what sets his restaurant apart from other Mexican eateries, Morales said: “We cook everything fresh to order.” Because of that, he said, it takes a little time to prepare. The menu states just that, but my experience has shown that the waiting time in

reality is not very long. Morales also stressed that because everything is made to order, even if a dish is not on the menu or if you’d like a variation of a dish that’s listed, more often than not they can make it for you. For example, while only Enchiladas Poblanas (tortillas filled with chicken topped with lettuce, Mexican cream, avocado and anejo cheese served with mole poblano, green sauce or red chile sauce at $10.95) and Enchiladas Suizas are on the menu, you can also get the simpler cheese enchiladas, my favorite, chicken enchiladas or beef enchiladas. Each time I’ve visited Kiosko the service was attentive but not intrusive. We’ve always had the same waitress who is pleasant and speaks English fairly well. And if there’s anything she can’t explain, Morales, who has been in this country 11 years, has a good command of the language and will help out. He’s usually on the premises and aims to please. The lovely décor at Kiosko, created for the short-lived Locolomo, has not changed a great

In addition, once a liquor license was granted, a bar was built to blend in with the brick and wood surroundings. While the menu doesn’t specifically advertise it, besides beer and wine, margaritas, pina coladas and other mixed drinks are available for the asking. Seating for 40 is provided at three booths and five attractive wooden tables trimmed in green with matching green wooden chairs. Hanging fixtures provide bright lighting. There are also stools at a marble counter and five large arches which allow you to watch what’s going on in the kitchen and food preparation area. This self-contained area is accented by a Spanish tile roof. The large windows at the front of the restaurant maintain the arched shape while letting in lots of light. Two murals on opposite ends of the L-shaped dining room give a feeling of being outdoors as do the earth tones of the rust-colored ceramic tile floor. Only the bright-colored fake flowers on each table detract from the tasteful interior decoration.

Besides the inside dining, four booths have been set up on the covered brick patio behind the restaurant for those who like to eat outside.

Meals at Kiosko begin with tortilla chips and a red salsa with just the right amount of zing. However, the salsa is served in a small dish requiring requests for a few refills. Starting with a larger container would make more sense. Even without the artichoke hearts that are called for in the recipe, Kiosko Shrimp ($14.95) is a dish I would highly recommend. Six jumbo shrimp are sautéed with mushrooms, garlic, butter and fresh lime juice. The preparation is finished with a splash of tequila. Kiosko Shrimp is served with rice and fresh vegetables which on this day was broccoli. The shrimp were excellent and the sauce tangy. Coowner Nestor Morales consulted with me before preparing the dish to be sure I wanted it without the artichoke hearts when there were none on hand. At the end of our meal he came over with two desserts, for which he did not charge us, to make up for it. That was a kind gesture designed to keep us coming back. Tilapia Atlixco ($13.95), fresh filet of this mild fish in a light white wine tomato sauce with two clams in the shell and shrimp, was a good choice for adults but too clammy tasting for my 11-yearold. She ordered it mild and I’m sure it would have been more appealing to my palate with some Please turn to page 6R

The clean, bright interior of Kiosko is decorated with colorful Mexican blankets and a Mexican flag.

RESTAURANT REVIEW Kiosko Restaurant: A place to gather for authentic Mexican fare added spice. Rice and broccoli also accompanied this entrée. The Enchiladas Suizas ($11.95) were good, but we were offered them with beef or chicken and I would have preferred this dish with just its trademark melted cheese and Mexican green tomato sauce. The enchiladas were also topped with sliced radishes, sliced avocado and shredded lettuce. To accompany our meal, we chose two Coronas ($3.50 each), a Tecate ($3.50) and a mango and

banana fruit shake ($3). The delicious shakes, blended with fresh fruit and ice, can be made with water or milk, but if you don’t state your preference, milk will be used. On our most recent visit the choices were mango, banana, melon and papaya. In the summer strawberry was also available. For dessert, the homemade flan ($4) was not just good but extraordinary. Creamy and topped with a tasty syrup, it was served on a plate surrounded by a star design in

dulce de leche syrup, pieces of papaya and fresh whipped cream. Pastel de Tres Leches ($4.95), also homemade, was delicious as well. Made with regular, condensed and evaporated milk, this super moist pound cake had a layer of peaches to provide extra flavor. The same syrup decorated the plate along with a dollop of whipped cream. Fresh fruit is also available for dessert. Our bill came to $58.45 which

Continued from page 3R did not include the price of the desserts.

Menu, recommendations Besides these dishes, Morales recommends the Mariscos a la Mexicana (shrimp, clams, calamari and mussels prepared in a fresh tomato, pepper and onion chipotle sauce at $14.95), the Grilled Rib Eye ala Puebla (topped with sautéed mushrooms, onions, olives, chile poblano tomato sauce

and served with rice and vegetables at $14.95), and the Mole Poblano ($15.95), half a chicken in a chile and chocolate sauce topped with sesame seeds and served with rice and beans. The sopes ($5.95), said Morales, are freshly made at the restaurant, not frozen. These are fresh corn tortillas topped with beans, cheese, as well as green and red Mexican salsa. If you only want to spend a few dollars, there are a variety of tacos at $2 each and tostadas (a crispy tortilla topped with lettuce, sour cream, Mexican anejo cheese, avocado, chicken or beef) at $3. Other standard Mexican fare includes burritos ($6.95), chimichangas ($7.95), Sizzling Fajitas ($12.95 for beef or chicken to $15.95 for shrimp, chicken and beef combination), and quesadillas ($7.95). Less commonly known are flautas ($7.95), chalupas ($5.95) and molotes ($6.95). All have descriptions in English on the menu to give you an idea if these are something you’d be game to try. On two occasions the soup of the day has been chicken, which I highly recommend and at $5.95 is a meal in itself. Served in a big bowl, it contains large chunks of chicken, onions, carrots, potatoes, celery and tomatoes in a wonderfully tasty broth. I’ve also tried the Nachos Kiosko ($8.95), enough for four as an appetizer. They is made with crispy corn tortilla chips topped with layers of beans, melted cheese, spicy Mexican chorizo, chicken, beef and a few jalapenos. These are different from the nachos you get at chain restaurants that are not Mexican—a lot less cheese—but are certainly yummy and without a doubt more authentic. A good selection of sandwiches ($5.95) appears on the menu, which is the same for lunch or dinner. All are large, but the granddaddy is the Cemitas Poblanas ($6.95), made with cheese, avocado, a Mexican herb called papalo, chile chipotle, lettuce, tomato and the meat of your choice. The Torta Cubana combines chicken, pork, ham, Swiss cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, pickles, jalapenos, mayonnaise and mustard. The Tortas al Pastor features marinated pork with slices of pineapple. The Milanesa de Res or Pollo combines breaded beef or chicken with the standard lettuce, tomato, avocado and hot pepper toppings. All are served on a large Mexican roll called a telera. For the less adventurous, there’s a cheeseburger or grilled chicken breast sandwich.

Hours, parking, etc. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast—both Mexican and American—is only served on the weekends. Parking is on the street or in the village-owned Grove Street parking lot behind the restaurant. You can enter either from Westchester Avenue or through a back entrance off the parking lot.
