Raymond’s B&B: the best breakfast and among the best burgers in town By Jananne Abel
I
f you’re looking for a cute, casual place for breakfast or a burger, you now have a local option. Raymond’s B&B in the Lyon Park shopping center at 540A Willett Ave., which opened Sept. 2, fits the bill. The owner is Raymond Cacciatore of Port Chester, the previous proprietor of Garden Plaza Restaurant-Diner in Rye Brook’s Washington Park Plaza for 26 years. He’s hoping to draw back many of his previous customers, who he said came largely from Rye Brook, Port Chester and Byram, as well as attract new ones. B&B stands for breakfast and burgers which make up a large part of the menu. There are, however, a few other offerings. Raymond’s occupies a small space in the modest shopping center where a Laundromat used to be. The décor here is 50s, starting with an adorable statue of Betty Boop out front. There’s a reddish brown and white tile floor and gray, red and white Formica tables with matching red and gray chairs and stools. The tables seat 16 and another six can be accommodated at the counter. Beige walls are decorated with 45s and posters from the era advertising burgers and fries, Cracker Jacks, 15-cent hot dogs, Elvis Presley, The Three Stooges, Lucille Ball and James Dean. Among the 50s memorabilia figure a handful of blown up postcards of Port Chester from the early 1900s. All that’s missing is a juke box. “It’s in the plan to get a jukebox,” said Cacciatore. “They had a nice one in Cold Spring. It was original and it was working, too.”
“I like the theme,” said the owner, dressed in a black, green and white t-shirt displaying a caricature of Popeye and reading: “Got spinach?” “You see those shows. What’s missing is people getting together in a little place and talking.” He hopes to provide that place with his new restaurant. “The 50s was a good time,” added Cacciatore, 55, who actually came of age during the 60s. “It’s about the cars and the bikes.”
Simple menu Cacciatore said he plans to be somewhat flexible with the menu and offer what people want. But he also wants to keep it simple. For example, if there’s enough demand, he’ll add waffles. We hope he’ll also consider including the challah French toast he had at his previous restaurant. For now, breakfast features buttermilk or oat bran pancakes ($4.65), French toast ($4.85), eggs with home fries and toast ($3.95-$6.45 for 1-3 eggs) and optional sides of ham, bacon or sausage, omelets with potatoes and toast ($5.95) as well as the B&B special—a burger with two eggs, bacon, chili and cheese ($8.25), more than I could ever eat. You can add chocolate chips or banana, nuts and raisins to the pancakes or French toast for an additional charge. Egg on a roll ($1.75) or with ham, bacon or sausage ($3.25) are
