Two new restaurants open where others had been before By Jananne Abel

hile those who like to eat out may have their regular haunts, everyone likes to try the newest restaurants in town. Two places have opened within the last month in Port Chester where other eating establishments existed before, one a fast food takeout restaurant and the other an upscale Latino eatery. Garden Catering, which has three counterparts in Greenwich, opened at the end of last month at 140 Midland Ave., the former location of Country-Fried Chicken & Ribs. The same type of restaurant as its predecessor, it offers chicken, ribs and a whole lot more. Sonora, which has a counterpart in New York City, has taken up residence at 179 Rectory St., long the home of Port Chester restaurants, most recently Sequoia and Two Moons. It serves nuevo Latino cuisine including many interesting seafood dishes.
Garden Catering 140 Midland Ave. Port Chester 934-7852 or 934-7810 The sign for the new Garden Catering in Port Chester advertises “Chicken, Ribs & More.” In fact, the fast food restaurant offers a large selection of freshly made foods to take out. It opened on May 31 at 140 Midland Ave., the former location of Country-Fryed Chicken & Ribs. Frank Carpenteri, who a number of years ago owned Maine Street Seafood in Port Chester, introduced the Garden Catering concept in Greenwich and now maintains three locations there. He also does the catering for the Greenwich Knights of Columbus. Carpenteri and Kevin Keegan, both of whom were born and raised in Port Chester, have come back
to their roots and teamed up with Ecuadorian-born Mario Medina of Port Chester, a longtime chef for Carpenteri, to open this Port Chester location. “It’s nice to be back,” said Keegan. “Frank and I hung out just across the street growing up.” He referred to Da Da’s Stationery on the other side of Midland Avenue. The day before the Port Chester restaurant was to open, Carpenteri, who now lives in Greenwich, suffered a heart attack and went in for open heart surgery less than a week later. Nonetheless, the two other partners opened on schedule and were keeping things under control last week. Carpenteri was doing well and was due home at the end of last week but has to take it easy for at least five weeks. Keegan, who owns Mr. Meat Provisions, has been supplying

They considered a location in Stamford as well. That one fell through, this one came up and “we jumped on it,” said Keegan, who now lives in Stamford. While the other Garden Catering restaurants are strictly takeout, the Port Chester establishment, located on the opposite end of the shopping center in which The Diamond Club is located, offers outdoor eating at tables with umbrellas set up on the sidewalk. Besides serving takeout meals, all of the Garden Catering branches also do catering, which is Carpenteri’s specialty. While he’s recuperating, the catering function will be handled out of the Greenwich locations. The food is identical at each, with fresh meat supplied by Keegan, who makes a daily early morning trek to Hunt’s Point Market in New York City where he deals with five or six different distributors, peddling his provisions to over 100 restaurants. Garden Catering caters to kids, having developed a High School Special consisting of ½ pound of freshly made chicken nuggets and French fries for $5. These are solid chunks of white meat chicken battered and deep fat fried. There are also other sizes called Baby (1/4 pound for $3), Bad Boy (3/4 pound for $7) and Godfather (1 pound for $9). “I know it’s all fresh because I deliver it,” said Keegan. Garden Catering has a special seasoning salt servers can shake on the chicken, chicken nuggets, fries, or anything else for that matter, a secret recipe Keegan
won’t divulge. There are also homemade barbecue, honey mustard and sweet and sour sauces for dipping. Keegan boasts about the fast service and lack of waiting at Garden Catering. “Kids are our business,” he emphasized. “We want the kids.” Besides the chicken nuggets, fried chicken at $4.99 a pound and barbecue ribs at $7.99 a pound, Garden Catering offers a wide variety of other takeout foods. There are fried chicken platters with French fries and cole slaw ($3.50-$5.50), fried shrimp platters (excellent at $6), filet of sole platter ($6), hamburgers, a variety of hot and cold sandwiches on wedges and rolls ($1.75 for a hot dog to $5 for most sandwiches including shrimp salad and Italian combo on a wedge), wraps ($2-3 for half, $4-$6 for whole), salads ranging from gorgonzola with chicken ($5), avocado ($5.99/lb.) and tortellini pesto ($5.99/lb.). Baked ziti ($3.50), fried mushrooms ($5.99/lb.), quiches, soups ($2.50), fruits, pudding and snacks such as cookies and brownies are also on the menu. Rotisserie chicken will be available soon. In addition, Garden Catering offers daily specials such as a pork chop dinner with mashed potatoes and batter dipped and deep fried soft shell crab, priced from $5 to $8.50 for the soft shell crab. Garden Catering is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast, you can get a variety of egg sandwiches and platters, omelets, French toast, home fries, bacon, sausage, muffins and doughnuts.
Carpenteri came up with the Garden Catering concept over 10 years ago and opened the first one in Old Greenwich. Joe Marini, whose brothers own Marini’s Pizza and Marini’s Deli in Port Chester, introduced the chicken nugget specials targeted to high school students when he and Carpenteri opened the Cos Cob restaurant. Keegan feels the Port Chester location near Home Depot is a big plus and said everyone in the neighborhood has welcomed the new restaurant.
Sonora 179 Rectory Street Port Chester 933-0200 Raphael Palomino of Bedford and Moe Gad of New York City have brought their culinary and managerial skills from Manhattan to Port Chester, opening Sonora at 179 Rectory St. on May 11. It is the former location of Two Moons and briefly Sequoia, both Southwestern restaurants. Sonora is the name of Southwestern towns in Arizona, Texas and California, of a state in Mexico and also of Palomino’s other restaurant at 39th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues. The name fits the Southwestern décor with sculptured walls depicting a desert and featuring cactuses, lizards and birds. Lovely earth tone tile floors and high backed wooden chairs and benches with rustic patterned cushions at tables with white cloths complete the decor at this striking restaurant and bar. The cuisine is nuevo Latino, upscale Latin food with a French flair. The recipes have been developed by Palomino and are featured in his book Bistro Latino, copies of which are for sale at the restaurant at $25, as is the Dulce de Leche cheesecake. He is currently working on a second cookbook due out in the winter. Palomino, who hails from Colombia and takes care of the culinary end of the restaurant, and Egyptian-born Gad, who handles the front end, previously owned a restaurant called Bistro Latino together in New York City before opening the one in Port Chester. Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain that have been extrapolated here to include a wide variety of appetizers, and ceviches, South American seafood cocktails, are among the specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing. Paella, rice with lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels and chorizo ($21.95), and pan roasted Chilean sea bass, shrimp, clam and octopus in saffron broth ($19.95) are a few of the entrees
not to miss. For $15 you can get a tasting of ceviche as it is prepared in four different countries. Tapas include a lobster and avocado quesadilla with roasted yellow tomatoes and salsa ($7.50), Colombian sirloin empanadas ($6.95), an Anticucho
chimichurri and chipotle gratin ($21.95) and beef ribs with Mexican mole sauce served with sweet plantain mash ($18.95). There are also a few daily specials. For dessert, you can choose from the dulce de leche cake, passion fruit flan, semi-sweet chocolate flourless cake with moras and dulce de leche parfait, all $6.50. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list featuring white and red wines from Chile, Spain, Argentina and the United States priced from $21 to $95. So far, Sonora is only open for dinner, but the owners expect to open for lunch by mid-summer once enough experienced staff has been hired. Hours are currently 5-10 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Gad had been to the Rectory Street location for lunch with his partner when it was Two Moons and fell in love with the restaurant. When they found out it was available for rent, they didn’t even have to go see it before making their decision to take it. They also liked its proximity to Greenwich and weren’t aware of any restaurants in the area offering their food concept, so they thought it would work.
