Outdoor dining still popular By Jananne Abel
I
t’s summertime, and people have moved outside for everything including eating. And thus we enjoy picnics, barbecues and dining al fresco at a casual eatery or fine restaurant. Some relish the outdoor eating experience, even when it’s hot, searching out restaurants that provide for it, others wait for the perfect weather to dine outside, while others prefer air conditioning no matter what the weather. The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., is a popular outdoor venue in Port Chester. Surrounded by a white trellis fence, it has the atmosphere of a French café. The outdoor dining experience has been growing and changing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last five years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling a few years ago and then leveling off. The phenomenon has been catching on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate a much smaller number of patrons the rest of the year. While a few restaurants that offered outdoor dining in previous years aren’t doing so in 2001 because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue, for the most part others have come on line to take their place. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.
Port Chester Among the most visible outdoor eating areas in Port Chester is the well-landscaped red brick patio in front of Pasquale II Ristorante across from Cumberland Farms at 2 Putnam Ave. Here customers dine at 10 grayish tables with a wrought iron pattern and matching chairs covered with a mixture of forest
green umbrellas and sky blue San Pellegrino sparkling natural mineral water ones. A buffer of shrubs, trees and planters filled with flowers surrounds the patio and helps make for a tranquil setting. Tiny white lights on a white picket fence along the perimeter of the patio also provide ambiance. Fine Italian cuisine is featured at Pasquale for lunch and dinner— homemade pastas, chicken, veal and seafood as well as fine wines. The lunch menu also includes a handful of sandwiches. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., is among the more popular outdoor venues in Port Chester. Here eight white tables and chairs with green and white Brooklyn Brewery and rust Chimay Beer umbrellas, all surrounded by a white trellis fence, help provide the atmosphere of a French café. Potted flowers, flower boxes and candles on the tables add to the charming atmosphere. Some of the summer specials being offered by proprietor/chef Dave Haggerty at this international eatery, where the full menu is available until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, are Arugula, Grapefruit, Gorgonzola and Pignoli Salad with Poppy Seed Vinaigrette; Spinach Salad with Mixed Tomatoes, Kalamata Olives, Feta, Red Onions

It is covered by a bright green awning. Seating is at an eclectic mix of round and rectangular tables and chairs as well as at green picnic tables with dark green umbrellas. and daily lunch and dinner specials. Dinner hours are 5 to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Lunch is served Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting at 12 noon. The restaurant will be open for lunch on Sunday starting Sept. 1. The newest restaurant to offer sidewalk eating isCrossroads Café & Take Away which opened in January 1999 at 141 Willett Ave. serving breakfast and lunch. Two round green wrought iron tables for two with glass tops and matching ice cream chairs fitted with floral cushions provide a place for customers who prefer to eat in the open air. They are positioned under the café’s magenta and yellow awning and allow a perfect view of all the goings-on at a major village crossroads where King Street, Willett Avenue and Pearl Street come together. Offering a variety of delicious homemade soups, unusual sandwiches and wraps, quiches, salads, pasta and daily specials, Crossroads is the place to go when you want something different but not too heavy for lunch. For the summer the chef is serving up chilled soups such as cucumber and gazpacho, a variety of interesting salads and fresh-brewed iced tea. Traditional American breakfasts as well as light omelets and French toast made with Terranova bread from Arthur Avenue are also served. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. The new owners ofLuigi’s Restaurant & Pizza at 414 Willett Ave., cousins Luigi and Frank Dattilo of Mamaroneck and White Plains, respectively, have continued the restaurant’s 3-year tradition of setting up a space outside. A new white picket fence encloses three forest green tables for four and two square tables for two shaded by green and white Beck’s Beer and black and white Coor’s Light umbrellas in front of this neighborhood Italian pizzeria and restaurant. Six potted evergreens add color to the outdoor setting. Here customers may enjoy all types of pizza, calzones and wedges as well as traditional Italian pasta, veal, chicken and seafood dishes. Throughout the year Wednesday is Family Style Night where each dish feeds 2 to 4 people for $19.95, Thursday is Meat Lovers’ Night with a choice of dinners for $12.95 and Sunday is Pasta Madness featuring pasta dishes for $6.95. All include salad. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
Rye Brook The best kept secret in Rye Brook and Port Chester is still Mulligan’s Bar & Grill at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Anderson Hill Road, which we discovered last year. Here 15 wooden tables and chairs and a long bar with wooden stools are covered by a green and white awning behind the golf shop overlooking the ninth hole of the golf course. The fare includes things like fresh fruit plate, chicken quesadillas, shrimp cocktail, Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, grilled Cajun shrimp, salads such as Caesar, chef and calamari, and sandwiches (including Alaskan shrimp salad, shrimp and avocado club, turkey wrap and steak wrap), burgers and hot dogs. There are also daily specials listed on a grease board as you enter which include an iced tea such as raspberry and an alcoholic beverage of the day. A children’s menu is also available. week from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. through October. The Rye Town Hilton at 699 Westchester Ave. offers casual outdoor dining in a garden setting during limited hours at its Terrace Grill. This large area features lots of beige tables, chairs and umbrellas on a patio surrounded by hedges, flower gardens and a fountain. Additional seating is provided on a slate veranda a few steps above the patio. Guests may order chilled gazpacho soup, salads (featuring Nicoise with tuna), hot and cold sandwiches, a fruit plate, hot dogs, burgers or crab cakes in this lovely setting. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays only, the hours having been greatly curtailed from previous years. During the warm weather customers of The Club Sandwich, which opened in April 2000 at 7 Rye Ridge Plaza, around the back of the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, have the option of eating outside at one of four square wooden tables with ice cream chairs. Two of them are shaded by green umbrellas, the other two by the sandwich shop’s awning. The Club Sandwich, with five locations in the metropolitan area, offers a tremendous variety of sandwiches of all types, from simple roast beef on rye to smoked salmon with egg salad horseradish sauce, capers, onions, lettuce, tomato and bacon on a tortilla. The gourmet sandwich shop serves Boar’s Head deli meats on its sandwiches and offers nine different choices of bread on which they can be made. Besides all the usual and not so usual cold cuts, cheeses and salads, 34 finishing touches may be added to create your own sandwich or you can choose from a menu of 50 concoctions which have already been dreamed up.
Breakfast sandwiches, muffins, croissants, pastries, crumb cake, bagels, coffees and teas make up the breakfast menu. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The setup at Pizza & Brew at 136 South Ridge St., also in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, is very simple, as it was last year. Three white square tables for two have been set up under the overhang out front for those wishing to eat outside. You can get everything from pizza to a complete dinner at Pizza & Brew which boasts a huge menu with all kinds of Italian specialties. These range from the traditional to the more unusual. There are a large selection of homemade pastas—from simple spaghetti with tomato sauce to lobster ravioli; eggplant preparations; sausage and peppers; as well as chicken, veal and seafood dishes. Definitely a family restaurant, Pizza & Brew also offers a children’s menu. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. till 11:30 p.m.
