Pick a place to eat outside By Jananne Abel

“Summertime and the living is easy.”

A line from one of my favorite songs. Easy summer living calls for outdoor eating—picnics, barbecues, and dining al fresco at a casual eatery or fine restaurant. Some relish the outdoor eating experience, even when it’s hot, searching out restaurants that provide for it, others wait for the perfect weather to dine outside, while others prefer air conditioning no matter what the weather. The outdoor dining experience has been growing and changing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last five years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling five years ago and then leveling off. The phenomenon has been catching on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year. While a few restaurants that offered outdoor dining in previous years aren’t doing so in 2002 because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile, for the most part others have come on line to take their place. Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.

Port Chester A new outdoor venue that has popped up this year is the tiny enclave at the back of Sonora, the nuevo Latino eatery that opened in May 2001 at 179 Rectory St. A deck around the side of the restaurant off Rectory Street is hidden by tall trees and bushes. Unusual rustic flower boxes ring the ledge of the deck where four tables for four, one in each corner, are covered with white tablecloths and the black metal chairs that surround them have bamboo seats and backs. In this tranquil setting, reached by entering the front door on ‘Willett Avenue and walking through the restaurant, you can enjoy Latin food with a French flair. Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain, have been extrapolated at Sonora to include a wide variety of appetizers. Tapas and ceviches, South American seafood cocktails, are among the

specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing. Lobster and Avocado Quesadilla with roasted yellow tomatoes and salsa, a gazpacho made with roasted yellow tomatoes and avocado relish, Steamed Rhode Island Mussels with saffron, aji Amarillo and cilantro broth are among the interesting tapas. Entrées include Seared Yellow Fin Tuna with malanga crust, Sirloin Steak with Sun Dried Tomato Chimichurri and Chipotle and Sonora Seafood Paella. The same attentive service patrons receive inside is provided on the deck. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Among the most visible outdoor eating areas in Port Chester is the well-landscaped red brick patio in front of Pasquale II

The eating area on the sidewalk in front of Luigi’s Restaurant & Pizza at 414 Willett Ave. is surrounded by a white picket fence. Tablecloths and table service is provided for patrons choosing to eat dinner outside.
