RESTAURANT REVIEW
Café Mirage: Eclectic menu, pleasant dining outdoors and in By Jananne Abel
I
t’s definitely the time of year when restaurants with outdoor eating areas thrive. There are some restaurants you think of when the days get warmer and the sun shines that you might not run to when it’s cold or rainy. Café Mirage, located at 531 North Main St., near the Greenwich border, is one of those places. Eating on the patio at this Port Chester restaurant, known for its fine international cuisine and late serving hours, is like eating at a charming French café. Then again, eating indoors isn’t bad either. Café Mirage seats up to 44 people in the dining room and at a small counter. On the patio eight white tables and chairs seating about 30 are covered by green and white Brooklyn Brewery and rust Chimay Beer umbrellas, all surrounded by a white trellis fence. Flower boxes and candles on the tables add to the atmosphere. Inside the small restaurant a large window and several small ones further brighten the orange décor during daylight hours and ceiling fans keep the air circulating. Orange walls are decorated with framed French posters. Dim ceiling lights and
small globed candles provide lighting after dark. Square black tables for two can be put together in any configuration to seat larger parties. These tables and a counter for five where diners can sit and watch the kitchen accommodate up to 44 people. On weekend nights, it s a bustling place where the noise level increases as the dining room fills and others are waiting. Owners Dave and Katy Haggerty, who live at The Landmark building in Port Chester, have continued the traditions
of excellence and serving the late night crowd begun by Café Mirage s previous owners. Dave was the sous chef for two years under proprietor Dan Rubino before taking it over when Rubino went in on a new venture further up North Main Street. Katy started as a hostess and waitress under Rubino and then became manager. The couple reopened the restaurant on Nov. 2, 2000 after closing for a few months to spruce it up. They were married last summer. Dave, a graduate of the Cu-

linary Institute of America in Hyde Park, is now the head chef, having previously worked with Rubino to develop the restaurant s eclectic menu and then adding his own preference American regional dishes to the French, Asian and Caribbean mix. He began his culinary career at Manero s in Greenwich and also worked at River City Grill in Irvington and Centro in Greenwich before taking the job at Café Mirage. The menu is varied and interesting, the soups, salads and appetizers particularly appealing, and there are even sandwiches if that s what strikes your fancy. Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell and traditional shrimp cocktail are always available by the piece at market prices from the Oyster Bar. Prices, in the $5 to $10 range for appetizers and $17 to $22 range for entrées, are not out of line for the quality of the food and its preparation. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The scrumptious desserts are all homemade by Mr. Haggerty and sous chef Carlos Arroyo of Port Chester. Currently the restaurant turns away about 50 people on weekend nights. We took a little hit after 9/11, but since then business has bounced back to where it should be, said Dave.
Dinner for four
I ve never had a bad meal at Café Mirage; in fact, I usually go home raving about the food. My recent visit was no exception when everyone in our party of four was extremely pleased with their selections and the presentation. Meals begin with a basket of sliced bread in three varieties multi-grain, semolina and sour dough baguette with either a flavorful hummus or butter for spreading. For starters, a bowl of chicken chowder ($5), filled with chunks of chicken, potatoes and onions in a broth thickened with butter and flour, was a hit. Chef Dave s lobster bisque ($7), while thick and tasty, might be even better if the broth were thinner and the flavor more subtle and refined. Fortunately you get a sizeable portion because I couldn t keep others at our table from sampling my arugula, grapefruit, gorgonzola cheese and pignoli nut salad with poppy seed vinaigrette ($8). What a refreshing treat! Dave said it s among the restaurant s most popular appetizers and he goes through three cases of arugula a weekend. Our wine selection was a lovely Muscadet Domaine de la Batardiere 2000 from the Loire River Valley in France Please turn to page 6R

Café Mirage: Eclectic menu, pleasant dining outdoors and in ($23). Muscadet is one of my favorite medium-priced dry white wines, and this was a good one. For now, Café Mirage serves only beer and wine. The restaurant has a large selection of domestic and imported bottled beer and red, white, Champagne and sparkling wine from France, Italy, Australia, Argentina, California and the Finger Lakes. The wines range in price from $21 to $70, with several bottles under $30. For entrée, the Coconut Curry Shrimp ($19), one of the dishes under the category In Bowls on the menu, was fabulous. I debated about my selection and couldn t have chosen a better one eight medium-sized shrimp in a perfectly seasoned sauce over rice. A caution here, however. This dish comes in four degrees of spiciness mild, medium, hot or volcanic. I chose medium which was fairly spicy but not so hot I couldn t taste it. For me it was perfect. Roast Murray s Free Roaming Chicken with mashed potatoes and asparagus ($19) proved crispy, moist and subtly superb. It is rubbed with a paste of olive oil, herbes de Provence and salt and pepper and cooked at a high heat initially to produce the crispiness before the heat is turned down for roasting. Jamaican Jerk Chicken over rice and black beans ($17) lives up to its hot and spicy billing. Dave said he makes a tub of jerk which combines cayenne black and white pepper, vinegar and habernaro chiles for marinating. The spiced chicken is then cooked to order, grilled in a pot with chicken broth and served with black beans and rice. If you haven t had ostrich

There s nothing like a good soup, and Café Mirage will have a number of cool ones for the warm months ahead cucumber, carrot ginger (served warm or cold), gazpacho and cold tomato with avocado relish. Another hot soup roasted red pepper vegetable pesto with parmesan crustini also sounds intriguing. Besides the mousse and bread and butter pudding we sampled, the dessert menu features Café Lattée Crème Brulée ($6), Cheese Plate with domestic and imported cheeses ($9) and Coconut Macaroons with tropical fruits (currently mango, papaya and blood orange). Café Mirage is only open for dinner. Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The Haggertys hope to make some renovations during the winter to consolidate the two kitchens left from the restaurant s previous days as a deli into one, thereby making space for a few extra tables and a bar. If that comes to pass, they will also apply for a full liquor license.
