Eateries opening and relocating By Jananne Abel
T
he Port Chester restaurant scene is constantly in flux but at the same time flourishing. At this point in time, four new establishments or new locations of previously existing eateries are in various stages of completion. Teri s Tavern, offering an American pub menu into the wee hours of the morning, opened in December. Taos, a Southwestern grill restaurant, is open, but renovations are not yet complete to transform it from its prior life as a seafood restaurant with a pool table and lively bar. In addition, two Latino restaurants have been displaced due to downtown redevelopment and are in the process of moving to new locations. Teri s Tavern
134 North Main Street Port Chester 937-9695 Teri s Tavern opened on Dec. 1, 2001 in the spot at 134 North Main St. that had previously housed Silver Spoon Catering and before that a French restaurant called Le Radis Blanc. It is an old-fashioned bar offering good quality American pub food in a clean but casual setting. Teri and Brian Smith of Greenwich have pooled their almost 30 years of combined experience in the business as bartenders and managers. Brian, a carpenter by trade who has been bartending on the side for 17 years, has worked at a number of bars in Stamford, the most recent being the Temple Bar, others including the Terrace Club and Violet s.
Preferring the bar industry to carpentry, Brian had been looking to open his own place in Port Chester for about five years and was waiting for the right opportunity to come up. He found it at 125 North Main St. where he and Teri, already life partners, have teamed up as business partners as well. Brian used his carpentry background to renovate the space, building the bar, refurbishing the basement, adding equipment to the kitchen and generally cleaning it up. The new place boasts a wood floor, six comfy booths with black seats and wooden tables in the dining room, two concrete walls painted red with old bottles resting on racks on the walls and a porthole that s actually an exhaust fan. Rustic wood paneling covers the other walls and ceiling fans complete the decor. The simple bar has a wood grain look with a laminated top.
Artist s rendering of the bar and murals of Native American artwork that will surround it once the décor is complete at Taos Southwestern grill restaurant at 23 ½ North Main St., Port Chester. He was also a partner in a bar in Stamford for a time and a bartender at 7 Willow Street in Port Chester 12 years ago. Teri also bartended at the Temple and the Terrace Club. The two were married three years ago and had their first child, Erica, six months ago.
Small wooden tables for two provide additional seating in the bar area which also features a video game. Dining is informal at Teri s Tavern and no doubt secondary to drinking. The complete menu fits in plastic stands on each table and consists of homemade soup of the day, appetizers and sandwiches.
Teri s Tavern opened in December at 134 North Main St., Port Chester. Burgers, cheese steak, chicken cutlet with or without chili, grilled chicken sandwiches and Danny the Dog Platter (two hot dogs with sauerkraut, chili or both) are all served with fries, pickle and cole slaw and, except the hot dogs ($5.95), are priced at $6.95 to $7.95. Plain chili is $4.75. Soups include varieties such as split pea, beef barley and clam chowder. On the appetizer side, there are chicken wings ($5.95), nachos ($5.95, $6.95 with chili), onion rings, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce, curly fries ($3.75), Poppy s Poppers ($4.95), a chicken quesadilla ($5.95) and lightly battered fried calamari ($7.95). The nachos are crunchy, loaded with cheese, and topped with plenty of meaty chili and jalapenos, a meal in themselves. Burgers are big, and chicken wings are tasty. Brian said three sandwiches were being added to the menu this week: turkey club, roast beef club and Reuben (corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on sourdough rye bread) at $6.95 to $7.95 as well as thincrusted 10-inch personal pizzas with a choice of cheese, pepperoni and perhaps mushroom ($5 and $6) toppings. The food is prepared by Brazilian born chef Buddy Rowilson, a resident of New Rochelle, and is served from 4 p.m. when Teri s opens until 3 a.m., an hour before closing, seven days a week. For St. Patrick s Day, March 17, corned beef and cabbage with potatoes or on rye will be available for $5-$6. We just want to get people in, said Brian. Teri s Tavern will open that day, a Sunday, at 12 noon and stay open till 4 a.m. Me and my wife have been working all the nightclubs and bars around here, know a lot of people in the restaurant industry, and they come down here after work and they tell their customers to come check out this new place down here, said Brian. Besides food, Teri s offers a nice draft beer selection, with six different varieties on tap. Parking is on the street.
Taos
23 ½ North Main Street Port Chester 937-0333 Around April 1, Taos, dubbed a Southwestern grill restaurant, will be complete at 23 ½ North Main St., right in the heart of downtown Port Chester. Right now it s in transition from the former Shipwrecked Tavern. Carol Green of New York City, managing partner of 23 and a Half Restaurant Corporation, has decided to keep the place open during renovations which have included taking the giant sharks out of the restaurant s interior and its front window and otherwise changing the décor from a nautical theme to a Southwestern one. In addition to an interior ambiance typical of an adobe hacienda of America s great Southwest, one of the most inviting attractions planned for Taos this summer will be an intimate patio garden dining area. Originally an attraction of Shipwrecked, dining on the lovely patio facing Abendroth Avenue stopped being encouraged over the years and patrons couldn t always get service out there. Green and her silent partners, who choose not to be identified, are investing nearly half a million dollars to purchase and convert Shipwrecked into an inviting Southwestern restaurant and grill. They re bringing in artisans and craftsmen to create the new ambiance. Joseph Guillette, an artisan, graphic designer and illustrator from Manhattan, is creating oil painted murals of Navajo Indian blankets and Native American symbols and themes in brilliant turquoise, oranges, yellows and earth tones to accentuate Taos s interior. An attractive new awning has been approved by the Port Chester Architectural Review Board and will be installed soon. Green and her partners learned about the extensive redevelopment that is taking place in Port Chester and wanted to jump on the Please turn to page 6R

New home of Restaurante Rinconcito Salvadoreno on Broad Street is expected to open in a month or so.
Eateries opening and relocating Continued from page 3R bandwagon, said Barbara Branagan of Branagan Communications in Katonah, who is doing the public relations for the restaurant. Opportunity was calling. Taos will not feature heavy Tex Mex-style foods, explained Green. Rather, we ll be serving comparatively light Southwestern-style dishes for lunch, dinner and late night menus that will have something for everyone s discerning tastes. The Taos menu ranges from quesadillas and Corn Husk Tamale appetizers to salads and wrap sandwiches to fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, shrimp stuffed jalapenos, Taos and Coyote Burgers to roast chicken, grilled sirloin steaks, pizza and pastas. Although all items on the menu weren t available when we visited two weeks ago, everything we tried we liked and prices were reasonable. These included mussels in a jalapeno sauce, a shrimp quesadilla and a pair of enchiladas, one beef and one chicken. We also had some excellent margaritas. Chef Frank Harkin was previously the executive sous chef at Fabulous Foods, a catering business in Port Chester, and before that was a sous chef at the Copacabana in Manhattan. While non-smoking dining will be available on the patio and in the dining room, Taos will feature a comfortable lounge area with couches and a cigar smoking area. The restaurant will offer nearly 70 different tequilas plus strawberry, mango and peach frozen margaritas. The shelves of the long, narrow Taos bar will showcase the wide variety of tequilas and be accentuated by two gigantic Navajo blanket murals painted by Guillette. Future ambitions will be to offer a raw bar menu on the patio and a late night snack menu for the summer. Hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and until 3 a.m. on the weekends with food being served until closing. Parking is on the street or in the marina parking lot near the back entrance off Abendroth Avenue.
Opening soon
Restaurante Rinconcito Salvadoreno is moving from 17 South Main St. to Broad Street in a month or so, with the South Main Street location remaining open in the meantime. Renovations have been going on for some time to make way for the Salvadoran restaurant at the new site. A beautiful wooden sign with gold letters and palm trees on a burgundy background hangs on a neatly painted front in eggshell with mauve trim. The lower part of the building so far remains in two-tone beiges from upgrades done to accommodate a previous use of the building. Signs in the windows in Spanish read Grand Reapetura Pronto (grand reopening soon). El Chalan has necessarily closed in Liberty Square where roadway upgrades are taking place. The Peruvian seafood restaurant will reopen at 45 Midland Ave., the former site of Piranha Bar & Grill, sometime in the future. Much work had been taking place at the Midland Avenue site and a sign indicated it would be the new home of El Chalan until recently when the sign disappeared. From the outside, a white awning, a fresh coat of white paint, brown decorative grills over the windows and a new door with ornamental glass panes indicate a new business will take up residence here.
