RESTAURANT REVIEW
Sonora: Upscale Latin food and terrific service A By Jananne Abel
Port Chester location that’s long been the home of fine food is once again living up to that reputation. Over the years, the cuisine at 179 Rectory St., actually fronting on Willett Avenue, has gone from German, to Italian, to Southwestern and now to nuevo Latino. Sonora, which opened just about a year ago at this spot, offers its upscale Latin food with a French flair in lovely surroundings with attentive service.
Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain that have been extrapolated here to include a wide variety of appetizers, and ceviches, South American seafood cocktails, are among the specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing. Prices on the a la carte menu are on the pricey side commensurate with the atmosphere, service, presentation, unusual recipes and high quality ingredients. If you’re a little adventurous, Sonora is the perfect place for Mother’s Day, any other special occasion or a memorable night out. For Mother’s Day, May 12, there will be a price-fixed menu featuring a three-course dinner— appetizer, salad and main course— plus dessert and coffee for $34.95. Choices of entrée will include steak, salmon, paella or chicken. Special Latin American cocktails will be extra. Reservations are being taken from 2:00 p.m. on. Since the fall, Hilberto Colon
(he played with Tito Puente) and his band have played Latin jazz in the lounge from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with no cover charge. Sonora is the name of Southwestern towns in Arizona, Texas and California, of a state in Mexico and also of co-owner Raphael Palomino’s other restaurant at 39th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues in Manhattan. The name fits the Southwestern décor with sculptured walls depicting a desert and featuring cactuses, lizards and birds. Lovely earth tone shiny tile floors and high backed wooden chairs and benches with rustic patterned cushions at tables with white cloths, pottery and other accents complete the décor at this striking restaurant and bar. You can eat in the cozy bar, the main dining room downstairs or in a second dining room upstairs, which is open on weekends and for private parties of up to 100. The restaurant seats a total of 140 people. Realistic looking Monarch
With its sculptured walls, the main dining room at Sonora resembles a desert. butterflies cover the window as you enter Sonora’s vestibule and, just inside the door, luxurious couches are available for patrons who might have to wait. A large vase of dogwood blossoms sits on a credenza in the entryway. Subtle lighting is from small ceiling lights turned lower as it gets dark when small globed candles are placed on each table. The recipes at Sonora have been developed by Palomino and are featured in his books Bistro Latino and Viva la Vida, the first dealing with the basics of nuevo Latino cooking and the second, which just came out about three weeks ago, with more fancy foods. They are for sale at the restaurant at $25, as is Sonora’s Dulce de Leche Cheesecake ($30). Palomino has started a third cookbook on salsas. Palomino, who hails from Colombia and now lives in Bedford, and Egyptian-born Moe Gad of New York City have brought their culinary and managerial skills from Manhattan to Port Chester. Palomino takes care of the culinary end of the restaurant, with four sous-chefs under him, and Gad handles the front end with the capable help of a hostess and manager. They owned a restaurant called Bistro Latino together in New York City before opening Sonora in Port Chester.
Dinner for two
Sonora opened last May at 179 Rectory St. in Port Chester.
I can honestly say I haven’t had anything I didn’t like at Sonora, and just about everything on the menu sounds appealing. Meals start with bread served with a tasty spread made with white beans, roasted garlic and red pepper or butter if you prefer. From among the Latin Ameri-
can cocktails ($7), we chose a Mojito, Hemingway’s favorite Cuban drink of light rum, lots of fresh mint, freshly squeezed lime juice and sugar with a splash of 7Up, and a Strawberry Caipirosa made with fresh strawberries, vodka, muddled limes and sugar. Both are refreshing. I can also recommend the Caipirinha, a Brazilian classic made with Cachaca (a sugar cane rum), muddled limes, sugar and freshly squeezed lime juice garnished with a stick of sugar cane. Besides the cocktails, Latin American beers and other brews ($5), Sonora has an extensive wine list featuring white and red wines from Chile, Spain, Argentina and the United States priced from $25 to $95, with the average bottle costing $35. Our waiter recommended the Alamos Chardonnay 2000 from Chile ($25), described on the bottle as “balanced and full flavored,” which we enjoyed immensely, finding the taste dry and oaky. Lobster and Plantain Bisque ($7.50), small pieces of lobster, corn, red peppers, carrots and other vegetables in a creamy potage, was served in a coconut shell accompanied by two tall plantain chips on a plate garnished with popcorn. Ceviche Ecuatoriano ($9.50), a variation on the American shrimp cocktail, only better, also came in a coconut shell with the same plantain chips. It is made with large shrimp in a slightly spicy tomato sauce flavored with avocado, red onions and citrus. I could also definitely taste cilantro. One of the specials that night was a tasting of ceviche as it is prepared in
four different countries, a treat we have enjoyed in the past. Presentation is key here, and even the main course plates are pretty, one yellow with a black and orange design, another with a border of blue, green and red spirals. Our waiter wisely recommended that the Seared Yellow Fin Tuna coated with malanga crust ($21.95) be cooked medium rare so as to still be slightly pink and tender. It was served with a tasty tapenade (thick paste) of Nicoise olives and cilantro for optional dipping. A saffron, quinoa (a South American grain), sweet pea and shrimp hash brown completed the appealing meal. Sirloin Steak with Sun Dried Tomato Chimichurri and Chipotle ($22.95) brought a good-sized piece of tender beef drizzled with the flavorsome tomato sauce in a spiral design and also deliberately dripped in drops around the outside of the plate. It is served with a delicious tetilla cheese gratin of thinly sliced potatoes layered with tomato salsa and cheese. A sprig of arugula decorated both dishes. We chose a dessert special, enough for two, a luscious fruit cobbler with mangos, raspberries, strawberries, black raspberries and peaches, dulce de leche ice cream and crunchy dulce de leche oatmeal cookies on the side ($8.50). There’s a variation, Mexican Cinnamon Peach and Blueberry Cobbler with Dulce de Leche Ice Cream ($7), on the menu as are the oatmeal cookies by themselves ($5), but this was even better than both of them. Some of the other scrumptious desserts to Please turn to page 6R

Sonora: Upscale Latin food and terrific service
NOW OPEN
Continued from page 3R choose from: Dulce de Leche Fondue for two served with market berries ($9), Passion Fruit Flan ($7), White Chocolate Mouse and Dulce de Leche Napoleon ($8) and Colombian Semi-sweet Chocolate Crème Brulée ($7). Our bill totaled $121.05 with two coffees ($2.50 each). Waiters are Latin with varying accents which for gringos may make some of them difficult to understand if you don’t pay close attention, but service is definitely a strong point here, with watchful eyes always on the tables to offer service and more than one person available to lend a hand or answer a question at each table.
Menu
914-937-0333
Besides what we ate on our recent visit, I can recommend the Sonora Seafood Paella, rice with lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels and chorizo ($22.95) on the current menu as a main course as well as the Lobster and Avocado Quesadilla with roasted yellow tomatoes and salsa ($9.50), one of the tapas. With the summer menu to be introduced in about a month, the gazpacho, made with roasted yellow tomatoes and avocado relish, will return, also a good bet. Some of the other tapas include Colombian Sirloin Empanadas ($7.50), Chilean Salmon and Avocado Tartar ($6.95) and Steamed Rhode Island Mussels with saffron, aji Amarillo and cilantro broth ($7.95). Among the salads are Sweet Plaintain and Lentil Salad with pearl onions and Colombian chorizo ($7.50) as well as a more traditional green salad with goat cheese ($7.50) and Chicken Caesar Salad with Chaif Manchego cheese ($9). Some other entrée choices include Pan Roasted Chilean Sea Bass with white beans, chorizo and lobster broth ($22.95), Roasted Boneless Chicken with Peanut Chardonnay Sauce and sweet pea mashed potatoes ($19.95) and Sautéed Jumbo Ecuadorian Shrimp in a Cartagena pineapple and coconut rice with mango tequila mojito sauce ($22.95). There are also a few daily tapa, ceviche and entrée specials.

The tapas and ceviches, soups and salads are the same as at dinner (including the prices), there are six main courses ranging from $16 to $19.95 including the Pan Roasted Chilean Sea Bass with Shrimp, Clams and Octopus in Saffron Broth ($19.95) I highly recommend, a vegetable paella, a salmon, skirt steak, tuna and chicken. There are also sandwiches ranging in price from $8 to $12. Examples are a Bocadillo Cubano, a typical Cuban sandwich of ham, roasted pork, pickles, white cheddar cheese and mustard served on a French baguette with plantain chips ($8.50) and a Shrimp Wild Mushroom and Spinach Wrap with malanga chips ($9.95) as well as a hamburger, yellow fin tuna sandwich and a special chicken wrap. Currently the dinner hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
